        2. #IronMan3 is on a record-smashing spree. Numbers being compiled, but it’s a stupendous start. Biggest Hollywood opener? Let’s wait!

        3. #Aashiqui2 has had a fantastic start. Though numbers still being compiled, it’s one of the biggest starts for a film starring newcomers!

Shamshad Begum : छोड़ बाबुल का घर, आज पी के नगर, मोहे जाना पड़ा

Shamshad Begum

April 14, 1919 – April 23, 2013

3

Shamshad Begum was one of the first playback singers in the Hindi film industry. She had sung over 6000 songs in Hindi , Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil and Punjabi languages. Her songs from the 1940s to the early 1970s remain popular and continue to be remixed.

Young Shamshad Begum

Young Shamshad Begum

Shamshad Begum died this month on April 23 , 2013 at the age of 94 and I am forced to write 7th obituary in continuation in the month of April . Shamshad Begum , along with Noor Jahan and Amirbai Karnataki , dominated the pre-Lata Mangeshkar era in Indian playback singing .

Among female playback singers , She was blessed with a distinct voice with slight nasal twang and any lover of Hindi film music can immediately recognize her voice .

Since I was born and brought up in the Lata Mangeshkar era , I was not a fan of Shamshad Begum’s voice initially. But slowly , as my understanding grew , I started appreciating her voice .

The first song of hers , which caught my fancy , was ” Pee Ke Ghar Aaj Pyari Dulhaniya Chali ” . ThisMother India ” [ 1957 ] song was immensely popular . Other songs of the same film ; ” Holi Ayee Re Kanhayi Rang Chhalke Suna De Zara Bansuri ” and ” Gadiwale Gadi Dheere Haank Re “ are also hit even today . Then I watched Mughal – E – Azam ” [ 1960] and its immortal qawwali is still fresh in my mind . ” Teri Mehfil Me Qismat Azma Ke Hum Bhi Dekhenge “ is a connoisseur’s delight . Then I watched ” Aan ” [ 1952 ] and I was permanently hooked to Shamshad Begum’s voice . All her popular songs , like ; ” Aag Lagi Tan Man Me Dil Ko Pada Thamna , Ram Jaane Kab Hoga Saiyyan Ji Ka Samna ” and ” Khelo Rang Hamare Sang Aaj Din Rang Rangeela Aaya “ are still my favourites . But ” C. I. D. ” [ 1956 ] was another revelation . ” Le Ke Pehla Pehla Pyaar , Bhar Ke Aankhon Me Khumar ” and ” Kahin Pe Nigahen Kahin Pe Nishana , Jeene Do Zalim Banao Na Deewana “ are just immortal . It is surprising that I heard her most popular song very late in my life . ” Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon Kiya Hai Wahan Se Telefoon , Tumhari Yaad Satati Hai “ . This song from ” Patanga ” [ 1949 ] is unforgettable and its several re-mixed versions are still extremely popular . ” Naya Daur ” [ 1957 ] film’s ” Reshmi Salwar Kurta Jaali Ka “ was a craze of its time . Her last hit  ” Kajra Mohabbatwala Ankhiyon Me Aisa Dala “  from ” Kismat ” [ 1969 ] is one of the songs which was re-mixed again & again .

4

Shamshad Begum’s career was somewhat eclipsed with the advent of Lata Mangeshkar . She sang her first duet ” Dar Na Mohabbat Kar Le “ with Lata Mangeshkar in ” Andaz ” [ 1949 ] and her last duet with Lata Mangeshkar was ” Teri Mehfil Me Qismat Azma Kar Hum Bhi Dekhenge “ from ” Mughal – E – Azam ” [ 1960 ] . Within these 13 years Shamshad Begum’s career went downhill and after giving her last hit ” Kajra Mohabbatwala “ in 1969 , she bid adieu to playback singing .

5

Some Famous Songs of Shamshad Begum :

  • Leke pehla pehla pyar, (CID 1956), (music: O.P. Nayyar)
  • Milte hi aankhen dil hua, (Duet with Talat Mehmood), (Babul), (music: Naushad)
  • Chali chali kaisi yeh hawa yeh, (Duet with Usha Mangeshkar), (Bluffmaster 1965), (music: Kalyanji Anandji)
  • Kabhi aar kabhi paar lagathi re nazar, (Aar Paar), (music: O.P. Nayyar)
  • O Gadiwale Dheere – Mother India – Naushad
  • Kahin pe nigahen kahin pe nishana – CID (1956) – music O.P. Nayyar
  • Boojh Mera Kya Naam Re – (1956) – music O.P.Nayyar
  • Mere piya gaye Rangoon – Patanga – music C.Ramchandra
  • Ek Tera Sahara – Shama – music Master Ghulam Haider
  • Holi aayee re KanhaaiMother India (1957) – Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni, Music: Naushad
  • Naina Bhar aye neer – Humayun – music Master Ghulam Haider
  • Nazar Phero Na Humse -(Duet with G M Durani) – Deedar (1951) – music Naushad
  • Chod Babul Ka Ghar – Babul – music Naushad
  • Kajra Mohabbatwala Ankhiyon mein Aisa dala (Duet with Asha Bhosle) – Kismat (1968) – Music: O.P. Nayyar
  • Meri neendon main tum, meri khwabon mein tum (Duet with Kishore Kumar) – Naya Andaz – Music: O.P.Nayyar
  • Teri Mehfil Mein Qismat (Duet with Lata Mangeshkar) – Mughal-E-Azam
  • Saiyan Dil mein aana re – Bahar
  • Reshmi salwar kurta jaali da – Naya Daur
  • Milte Hai Ankhen Dil Deewana Hua Kisika – Babul – with Talat Mahmood
  • Kisike Dil Mein Rehna Tha – Babul – with Lata
  • Dharti Ko Aakash Pukare – Mela – with Mukesh
  • do teen aaja mausam hai rangeen – Awara

Shamshad Begum’s fans often allege that her career suffered because of the monopolistic politics of Lata Mangeshkar . I beg to differ . Shamshad Begum played her innings and retired gracefully . Her career suffered because of the changing times and changing taste of film-goers . Talat Memood’s career went downhill with the advent of Mohammad Rafi . Even mighty Mohammed Rafi , towards the end of his career , was confined in his home for many years without recording a single song and Kishore Kumar ruled that era . In the field of art such things happen .

Her distinct style , her nasal twang and her strong voice , which was her forte in the earlier years of her career , became her nemesis towards the end . It is not for nothing that towards the fag-end of her career , her voice was used for vamps and her last hit ” Kajra Mohabbatwala “ in ” Kismat ” [ 1969 ] was filmed on Vishwajeet , who was masquerading as woman in the said film .

On behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , I offer my condolences to the family of the iconic singer . Self-proclaimed most famous acting school of Mumbai , self-anointed most famous acting institute of India and self-appointed most famous acting academy of bollywood has no time for such courtesy .

Shamshad Begum

Shamshad Begum

May her soul rest in peace ! Her ephemeral body is gone but her perennial voice , the temple bell , will live on forever .

P. B. Sreenivas : The Golden Voice Is No More

img_8024

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 18, 2013           00.50 A.M.

Legendary playback singer P. B. Sreenivas a.k.a. PBS died on April 14, 2013 in Chennai at the age of 82 .

P. B. Sreenivas

P. B. Sreenivas

He made his début in 1952 in Gemini’s Hindi film “ Mr Sampat ”, where his song “Aji hum Bharat ki naari”, a duet with Geeta Dutt, became popular. I still remember ” Mr. Sampat “ because of the sterling performance of Late Moti Lal , who played the lead in the film . He played a con man and played it with such aplomb , that his sherwani clad persona with swagger in his walk is still etched in my memory and his histrionics is still fresh . Though I had forgotten the above mentioned song .

Mr. Sampat

PBS sang his most popular duet in Hindi “ Chanda Se Hoga Wo Pyaara , Phoolon Se Hoga Wo Nyara ; Naachega Aangan Men Chham Chham , Nanha Sa Munna Hamara ” with Lata Mangeshkar in the film Main Bhi Ladki Hoon in 1964 . Music director of this song was Chitragupta and lyrics were written by Rajendra Krishan . It is sad that till recently I was under impression that the male voice in this song is of Hemant Kumar . It is only after the death of PBS that I got to know through the newspaper articles that the male singer in this song is P. B. Sreenivas and not Hemant Kumar .

Main Bhi Ladki Hoon

This film was made by A.V.M. studio Chennai and it had Meena Kumari and Dharmendra in stellar role . Balraj Sahni , Om Prakash , Manorama and Bhagwan Dada also starred in the film . Meena Kumari’s enchanting persona and this melodious song is still remembered by the connoisseurs of Hindi cinema . ” Main Bhi Ladki Hoon “ is unforgettable even today .

Though PBS had hit numbers in all the languages that he sang, it was in the Kannada Film Industry that he sang the highest number of songs and delivered the highest number of hits. P. B. Sreenivas ruled the Kannada Industry for over three decades and was the voice for Super Star Dr. Rajkumar . His first song for Rajkumar was in 1956 film ” Ohileshwara “ . He , later on , sang almost 300 hit songs for the Kannada Super Star .

In the Tamil industry, his maximum number of songs are for Gemini Ganesan. The most memorable hit of this duo was ‘Nilave ennidam nerungathe’.

Almost all his Kannada songs became famous and though he sang in many languages , he is considered a Kannadiga playback singer .

Most famous acting school of Mumbai , or most famous acting institute of India , or most famous acting academy of bollywood will not recognise him . They are oblivious of his contribution . God bless them !

P. B. Sreenivas

On behalf of all the students and staff of  VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , I offer my heartfelt condolences .

May eternal peace be bestowed on him !

60 Years of Film ” Aandhiyan “

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 12 , 2012           11.58 P.M.

Dev Anand‘s film ” Aandhiyan “ stands at the 10th position in the list of hit Hindi films of 1952 . I have written about 6 films of 1952 in a row . This , my 7th blog , is about ” Aandhiyan ” . I am unable to write about remaining 3 films ; ” Maa ” , ” Nagina ” and ” Bewafa “ as I have not watched them and there are almost no information available about those films on internet .

Dev Anand stablished his banner Navketan in 1950 with a film called ” Afsar ” , starring himself and Suraiya . Guru Dutt directed ” Baazi “ in 1951 was the second Navketan film and then came ” Aandhiyan “ in 1952 . This film was directed by Chetan Anand and it starred Dev Anand , his future wife Kalpana Kartik , Nimmi , K. N. Singh , Johny Walker , Durga Khote and Leela Mishra . Film’s story was written by Dev Anand himself .

Narendra Sharma’s lyrics were tuned by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan . Hemant Kumar and Asha Bhosle‘s duet ” Wo Chand Nahin Hai Dil Hai Kisi Deewane Ka ………….. “ was the most popular song of ” Aandhiyan ” . Asha Bhosle’s ” Dard Bant Raha Hai Kise Dard Chahiye …………………… “ is another hit . Lata Mangeshkar‘s ” Hai Kahin Pe Shadmani …………………….. “ was also very popular .

After massive hit ” Jaal ” , this was Dev Anand’s second hit of 1952 and thus he could consolidate his position at the box office as a formidable star and fortified position of his banner in Hindi film industry .

Another ” Andhiyan “ was made by David Dhawan in 1990 and it starred Shatrughan Sinha with Mumtaz . This was the come back film of Mumtaz and it bombed at the box office .

In my acting institute of Mumbai , I have decided to introduce my students to this fantastic world of Hindi films . They should know about the history – making films of India . It will be now a regular feature of the curriculum of Vidur’s Kreating Charakters .

With this blog about ” Aandhiyan ” , I am ending my ” Down The Memory Lane ” category blogs . In the last month of 2013 , I will again return with the hit films of 1953 .

60 Years of Film ” Sangdil ”

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 11 , 2012           11.50 P.M.

In the list of hit films of 1952 , Sangdil stands at the 7th position . I have already written about 5 films . They are ; ” Aan ” , ” Baiju Bawra ” , ” Jaal ” , ” Daag ” andAnhonee ” . I am unable to remember anything about ” Maa ” , the 6th hit film of 1952 . So I have to skip it . ” Sangdil “ stands at 7th .

This Dilip Kumar and Madhubala starrer was way ahead of its time .

” Sangdil “  was directed by R. C. Talwar . The film is an adaptation of the Charlotte Brontë classic Jane Eyre. The film stars Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, Dara Singh and Leela Chitnis. This film is Dara Singh’s debut film .

This film has lyrics by Rajender Krishen . It’s music is by Sajjad Hussain.

Talat Mehmood‘s ” Ye Hawa Ye Raat Ye Chandni , Teri Ik Ada Pe Nisar Hai …………….. “ is still popular among the lovers of old Hindi film songs . ” Kahan Ho Kahan Ho Mere Jeevan Sahare , Tumhen Dil Pukare ……………….. “ is another gem by Talat Mehmood . During the earlier days of Dilip Kumar and before Mohammad Rafi became his regular voice , Talat Mehmood was his voice .

” Dharti Se Door , Gore Baadlon Ke Paar , Aaja Aaja Basalen Naya Sansaar …………….. “ is another gem by Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt . This movie also has a Lata Mangeshkar gem ” Wo To Chale Gaye Ae Dil …………………… ” .

After ” Aan ” and ” Daag ” , this film ” Sangdil “ was 3rd consecutive hit of Dilip Kumar in 1952 and thus riding on the wave of 3 super hit films , he reached the dizzying heights of super – stardom , which lasted almost 50 years . Dev Anand followed him with 2 hits in 1952 ; ” Jaal ” and ” Aandhiyan “ and Raj Kapoor also with 2 hits ; ” Anhonee ” and ” Bewafa  . It is not for nothing that this triumvirate of Dilip Kumar , Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor ruled the Hindi film industry for uninterrupted 50 years .

There is one more point for the common public and connoisseurs alike . Lata Mangeshkar is the sole common factor of all the hits and super hits of 1952 . Male and female stars changed . Directors also changed the seats . Music directors and lyricists got replaced . Male singers are not there in every film . But Lata Mangeshkar gave hit after hit in every film , for every heroine and for every music director .

60 Years of Film ” Anhonee ”

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 10 , 2012           11.59 P.M.

In the series of hit films of 1952 , Raj Kapoor and Nargis starrer Anhonee is ranked 5th . After ” Aan ” , ” Baiju Bawra ” , ” Jaal ” and ” Daag ” , it was the 5th highest grosser of the year .

” Anhonee “ will always be remembered in the history of Hindi cinema for the fact that it was the first film where a female protagonist played double role . Nargis played the role of two sisters with elan and finesse which has become rare today . Khwaja Ahmad Abbas was the writer , producer and director of this film .

It had music by Roshan , who is incidentally Hritik Roshan‘s grandfather . Talat Mehmood‘s song  ” Main Dil Hoon Ik Armaan Bhara …………………… “ is still favourite of the connoisseurs . Talat Mehmood’s duet with Lata Mangeshkar ” Mere Dil Ki Dhadkan Kya Bole , Kya Bole , Main Jaanu Aur Tu Jaane …………… “ is also very melodious . Lata Mangeshkar’s mujra song ” Kaha Hai Unhonne Ye Raaz – E – Muhabbat , Kisi Se Na Kehna ……………………… “ and her duet with Rajkumari ” Zindagi Badli Mohabbat Ka Maza Aane Laga …………………. “ were also chart – busters .

Apart from the fact that Nargis played double role for the first time , this film will also be remembered that Talat Mehmood gave play back for Raj Kapoor . It is very rare .

” Anhonee “ name was again used for a Sajeev Kumar and Leena Chandawarkar starrer film in 1973 . It was directed by Ravi Tandon .

As an acting trainer , its my job to make my students aware of these iconic films and I do it regularly in my acting class in Mumbai and through my blogs .

60 Years of Film ” Daag ”

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 09 , 2012           09.30 P.M.

Dilip Kumar’s Daag ” , which got him his first Filmfare Best Actor Award , was the 4th biggest grosser of 1952 . After ” Aan “ , it was the second hit of Dilip Kumar in 1952 . Dilip Kumar played an alcoholic youth , who is driven by self – destruction .

” Daag “ is totally different from other three hits of 1952 . ” Aan “ , ” Baiju Bawra ” and ” Jaal “ are the other three hits . This Dilip Kumar , Nimmi , Lalita Pawar and Usha Kiran starrer was produced and directed by Amiya Chakrabarty , who incidentally directed Dilip Kumar’s debut film ” Jwar Bhata ” [ 1944 ] . Kanhaiyalal and  Leela Mishra played another important roles . If my memory is not failing me , Ram Mohan played Dilip Kumar’s friend and perhaps ” Daag “ is his debut film .

Shankar – Jaikishan gave music for the film and its one song ” Ae Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal , Gham Ki Duniya Se Dil Bhar Gaya ………………………… “ is still popular and hummed by general public and connoisseurs alike . It was written by Shailendra and it has many versions . Sad and playful versions were sung by Talat Mehmood and one version was sung by Lata Mangeshkar . ” Preet Ye Kaisi Bol Ri Duniya ………………………. “ sung by Lata Mangeshkar was another smash hit .

According to my memory , 2 other movies were made after ” Daag ” , using the same name . ” Daag – A Poem Of Love “ was produced and directed by Yash Chopra in 1973 . It was the first movie of Yash Raj Films . Another movie ” Daag : The Fire “ was directed by Raj Kanwar in 1999 .

As an acting trainer , its my job to make my students aware of these iconic films and I do it regularly in my acting class in Mumbai and through my blogs .

In future I resolve to make it a regular feature in Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , my acting school in Mumbai .

60 Years of Film ” Jaal ”

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 08 , 2012           11.40 P.M.

After Aan and Baiju Bawra , the third most successful film of 1952 was Dev Anand starrer Jaal ” . It was written and directed by legendary Guru Dutt . This was Guru Dutt‘s second movie, after Dev Anand‘s production Baazi ” . After Baazi, this was the second film in which Dev Anand also came through as a confident star/actor, with a style uniquely his own.

It has some memorable melodies by music maestro Sachin Dev Burman , a Dev Anand regular . Lata Mangeshkar‘s 2 songs ” Chori Chori Meri Gali Aana Hai Bura …………………….. ” , ” Pighla Hai Sona Door Gagan Par , Phail Rahe Hain Shaam Ke Saaye ……………………….. “  are still very popular . Kishore Kumar and Geeta Dutt’s duet ” De Bhi Chuke Ham Dil Nazrana Dil Ka ……………………… “  is my eternal favourite . But Hemant Kumar‘s ” Ye Raat Ye Chandni Phir Kahan , Sun Ja Dil Ki Daastaan ………………… “ is immortal and perennial favourite with the connoisseurs of Hindi film songs . It has several versions . Sung by Hemant Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar separately , it has a duet version also by them .

A typical crime thriller in Dev Anand style , ” Jaal “ was a far cry from swashbuckling  costume drama ” Aan “ and rustic , tender love story ” Baiju Bawra ” .World of Dev Anand was totally different from the world of Dilip Kumar and Bharat Bhushan . As I have written in my blog about ” Aan “ , I didn’t like the film when I watched it for the first time . But suave , debonaire , sweater clad and guitar strumming Dev Anand , playing a Christian character , became my instant favourite . Moon – kissed beach of Goa , Dev Anand’s immensely likable persona , Geeta Bali‘s vergin beauty and Lata Mangeshkar and Hemant Kumar’s etherial voice in  ” Ye Raat Ye Chandni Phir Kahan , Sun Ja Dil Ki Dastan ……………………….. “ had mesmerizing effect on my mind and the charm refuses to fade away even after 6 decades . Geeta Bali , again my favourite , was in full form in ” Jaal ” . Sachin Dev Burman’s musical genius was totally opposite of Naushad’s . Mohammad Rafi was as different from Hemant Kumar as North Pole is from South Pole . So the liking for ” Jaal “ , compared to ” Aan “ was much more . It is still one of my favourite films . Lata Mangeshkar is the only common link between all the three films and she was equally superb in all of them .

Apart from Dev Anand and Geeta Bali , it has K. N. Singh and Johny Walker also in the steller roles .

As I have stated in my previous blog , as an acting trainer , its my job to make my students aware of these iconic films and I do it regularly in my acting class in Mumbai .

I strive to make it a regular feature in my acting school Vidur’s Kreating Charakters .
