Under – 30 Over – Achiever Stars of Hindi Films

In the Hindustan Times of August 25 , 2012 , there was an article in HT Cafe section . It is about 8 stars of Hindi cinema , who are currently ruling the box office and yet are below 30 years of age . Their names are ; Ranbir Kapoor , Katrina Kaif , Priyanka Chopra , Imran Khan , Sonam Kapoor , Deepika padukone , Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Sharma .

It is very heartening to note that out of these 8 stars , 5 are my students and were trained by me during different phases of my career .

RANBIR KAPOOR : ” Saawariya ” to ” Rockstar “

I trained him before his debut film ” Saawariya ” [ 2007 ] . I used to go to his Pali Hill bungalow and work with him . I am happy to see his rise to the dizzying heights of super – stardom . I also attended the premier of his first film ” Saawariya “ at the Imax theatre , Wadala in Mumbai .

After 7 years of gap , I again met him at Manali in March 2012 . He had gone there for ” Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani “ , a film being produced by Karan Johar and Dharma Productions . I was also there to train Kalki Koechlin for the same film . Much has been changed since his ” Saawariya “ days . From a confident newcomer , he has now become a super – confident super – star . I was ushered into his room in Manu Allaya , a 5 star hotel in Manali by Kalki Koechlin . I was sceptical . Whether he would recognize me or not ? When Kalki told him about a visitor , he came forward , recognized me immediately and warmly hugged me .

As per trade grapevine he charges INR 8 – 10 crore per film . For ads he charges 1 – 2 crore per ad per day .

His major endorsements are ; Panasonic , Pepsi , Tata Docomo , Nissan , Ronco Leone Shoes , Hero Moto Corp and Lenovo .

KATRINA KAIF : ” Boom ” to ” Ek Tha Tiger “

She is again a rising super star among female artistes . Coming from a non – filmy background and without much knowledge of  Hindi language , she climbed the stairs of stardom and is now the most successful female star of Hindi film industry .

I was called by Yash Raj Films to train her for ” New York ” [ 2009 ] . I worked with her briefly for that film . Later on she again called me for Prakash Jha’s film  ” Raajneeti ” [ 2010 ]  . I worked on her accent . Results are there for everyone to see . She is tremendously hard-working girl .

As per trade analysts , she charges INR 3 – 4 crore per film . For ads she gets 1 – 1.5 per ad per day .

Her major endorsements are ; Barbie , Choc – On , Linc Uniball , Lux , Nakshatra , Olay , Panasonic , Pantene , Slice , Titan , Wrigleys , Yardley and Veet .

PRIYANKA CHOPRA : ” The Hero ” to ” Agneepath “

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are my personal students . I used to go to their houses . But Priyanka Chopra was my student in Mr. Kishore Namit Kapoor’s classes ,  with whom I was working those days .

She joined the class after being crowned Miss World in 2000 . She made her acting debut with Tamil film ” Thamizhan ” [ 2002 ] . Her first Hind film was ” The Hero ” [ 2003 ] . She gained superstardom with ” Andaaz ” [ 2003 ] .

Till date she has got 1 National Award and 4 Filmfare Awards .

As per trade pundits , she charges INR 2 – 3 crores per film . For ads she charges INR 65 – 75 lakh per ad per day .

Her major endorsements are ; Nokia , Dabur , Dabur Amla , Garnier , Samsung , Bru , Nikon , Hero Honda and Asmi .

IMRAN KHAN : ” Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na ” to ” Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu “

He , also , is not my personal student . He became my student when he joined Kishore Namit Kapoor’s classes .

He made his debut with ” Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na ” [ 2008 ] . His last release was ” Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu ” [ 2012 ] . Though he is only 8 films old , he , among the stars of his age , is considered bankable . Incidentally his heroine Genelia D’Souza in his debut film is also my student .

As per industry grapevine he charges INR 5 – 7 crores per film . For ads he demands INR INR 1 – 1.5 crore per ad per day .

His major endorsements are Levis and Coke .

SONAM KAPOOR : ” Saawariya ” to ” Mausam “

One day I got a call from Mr. Anil Kapoor . He wanted me to come to his house . I immediately rushed and to my surprise I found that he wanted me to train his daughter , who was making her debut in ” Saawariya ” [ 2007 ] with Ranbir Kapoor . I trained her for the film . She is , contrary to her image , very warm – hearted girl . She is style icon and a philanthropist .

She is only 7 films old , but is considered as one of the rising stars among the girls of her age .

According to trade pundits , she gets INR 50 – 75 lakh per film . For ads she demands INR 25 – 50 lakh per ad per day .

Her major endorsements are ; L’Oreal , Spice Mobile , Mont Blanc , Electrolux , Indian Gems and Jewellery Exibition .

[ So out of these 5 stars , 3 are my personal students and remaining 2 were my students in Mr. Kapoor's class . ]

DEEPIKA PADUKONE and SONAKSHI SINHA are not my students . So there is not much to write about them .

Her case is peculiar . She was in the Batch No. 19 of Kreating Charakters . But she constantly refuses to accept this . She says that she is not trained . So let it be . If she does not accept me as her teacher , so I cannot force myself to be her teacher . May God bless her in her journey !

First six months of 2011 are over and it was fairly successful. Second half started with a bang with a path-breaking film ” Delhi Belly “ . ” Ready “ and ” Singham “ continued the dream run at the box office. Daan Singh :

A talented music composer Daan Singh died last month. But the news came late and I was not aware of his death , so could not write about him last month in my June Diary.

Daan Singh passed away on June 18 , 2011 in Jaipur after a long illness. He was 78 at the time of his death.

He gave music for many films but only three films got released. ” Toofan ” [ 1969 ] , ” My Love ” [ 1970 ] and ” Bawandar ” [ 2001 ] . Among these three films ” My Love ” [ 1970 ] is his most famous film. This Shashi Kapoor and Sharmila Kapoor starrer has some beautiful melodies written by Anand Bakshi , which are still remembered by the connoisseurs of film music. Two songs of Mukesh ; Zikr hota hai hai jab qayamat ka , tere jalvon ki baat hoti hai………. and Woh tere pyar ka gham………….. and one of Mohammad Rafi ‘s ; O my love panchi wango………… are still famous . Dara Singh starrer stunt film ,  ” Toofan ” [ 1968 ] also had some melodies. Zindagi men aaya toofan………………  sung by Mohammad Rafi is still famous and I am unable to forget this song even though I watched the film years ago .

His yet to be released film ” Bhool Na Jaana “ [ 1973 ] fortunately got its music released. Mukesh gems like ;  Gham – E – Dil kisse kahoon …………….. Pukaro mujhe naam lekar pukaro [ Lyrics Gulzaar ]……………… and Gora gora mukhada [ Lyrics Gulzaar ] are still famous. Geeta Dutt’s Mere hamnasheen Mere hamnawa …………… is available on YouTube and is favourite of music lovers.Incidentaly this film had a child artiste called Tutu Sharma , who is now known as Pradeep Sharma , a producer and is married to Padmini Kolhapure. Producer of ” Bhool Na Jaana “ Jagan Sharma was incidentally Tutu Sharma’s father.

It is sad that a talented music director like Daan Singh left this world unwept , unheard and unsung.

Mani Kaul :

An Avant-Garde film-maker , and an alumni of Film & Television Institute of India , Mani Kaul , died of cancer in his Delhi residence on July 06 , 2011. He was 66 at the time of his death.

He made films like ; ” Uski Roti ” [ 1969 ] , ” Ashadh Ka Ek Din ” [ 1971 ] , ” Duvidha ” [ 1973 ] , ” Ghashiram Kotwal ” [ 1979 ] , ” Satah Se Uthata Admi ” [ 1980 ] , ” Nazar ” [ 1989 ] , ” Idiot ” [ 1992 ] , ” The Cloud Door ” [ 1995 ] , ” Naukar Ki Kameez ” [ 1999 ] and  ” Bojh ” [ 2000 ] . In between he also made documentaries like ; ” Dhrupad ” [ 1982 ] , ” Mati Manas ” [ 1989 ] and ” Siddheshwari ” [ 1989 ] . Incidentally , Shah Rukh Khan was the star of ” Idiot “ , a fact , strangely , he never acknowledged. Mani Kaul’s ” Duvidha ” was also remade by Shah Rukh Khan as ” Paheli ” .

Filmfare  instituted a new award known as Critics Award for Best Film and ” Uski Roti “ was the first recipient of this award. His most notable work was his documentary ” Siddheshwari ” , which won the National Award for Best Documentary film in 1989.

Mani Kaul , apart from being a path-breaking film-maker and writer , was also a teacher of cinema and used to teach cinema in colleges of  U. S. A. and Netherlands. He was a trained Dhrupad singer and a versatile painter. He also acted in Basu Chatterjee’s ” Saara Akash ” .

I don’t know whether it is proper to tell or not but in 1972 when I came to  Mumbai to struggle in films , I once went to his apartment to ask for work . I got rebuked and was told by his wife in very insulting and terse tone not to come ever again without proper appointment.I had gone to many places , met many legendary people and asked for work but never got rebuked or insulted. I was a huge fan of Mani Kaul’s work so this behaviour came as a shock.

A prolific stage , film and television actor Rasika Joshi died of cancer on July 07 , 2011 in Mumbai.She was only 39 at the time of her death.

Basically a Marathi stage and film actor Rasika Joshi was seen in few Hindi films and serials also. Ram Gopal Varma’s ” Ghayab “  , ” Darna Zaroori Hai ” , ” Vaastu Shastra ” , ” Ek Haseena Thi “ and Priyadarshan’s ” Malamaal Weekly ” and ” Bhool Bhulaiyaa “ were her some memorable films. She also worked in Shah Rukh Khan’s ” Billu “ and Ekta Kapoor’s serial ” Bandini “ . Ram Gopal Varma’s soon to be released ” It’s Not A Love Story “ is her last Hindi film.

Bhagwan Das Garga :

Renowned film historian and documentary film maker Bhagwan Das Garga, died on 18th July , 2011 in Patiala. He was country’s most renowned film historian.

He was assistant to legendary film maker V. Shantaram. Afterwards he made his first documentary ” Storm Over Kashmir “ in 1948. In total he wrote , produced and directed more than 50 documentaries. He was also a member of Government of India’s film advisory board. He earlier worked at the Mosfilm Studios in Moscow.

He wrote a book ” From Raj To Swaraj : The Non-Fiction Film In India “ in 2007. This book won the National Award for the Best Book on Cinema. He wrote two more books ; ” The Art of Cinema : An Insiders Journey Through Fifty Years Of Film History “ and the last one ” Indian Cinema : A Passage To Bollywood ” .

A popular Hindi and Marathi actor Sunil Rege died on July 27th , 2011 at the age of 63 in Pune.

In November, Box Office mayhem of October is still continuing. ” Golmaal – 3″ opens to bumper houses but ” Action Replayy “ ? It fails miserably. Is it not surprizing that from last Diwali to this Diwali, only 5 films clicked in a big way ? They are : ” 3 Idiots “  , ” Dabangg ” , ” Avatar [ Dubbed ] ” , ” 2012 [ Dubbed ] ” and ” Peepli [Live] “. Out of these five films, two films are the dubbed versions of Hollywood blockbusters. All these films more than doubled the investment made in them. Apart from above mentioned five big hit film, there were 18-20 more films, which can be termed as hits. Guzaarish,  released in the last week of the month, also flopped and added to the woes and miseries of the industry. In totality month of November was bad for the industry.

Desh Mukherjee : A renowned art director of his time, Desh Mukherjee passed away on November 04, 2010 in NOIDA. Apart from art direction, he directed two films : ” Imaan Dharam “ and ” Aatank “. “Imaan Dharam” was one of the biggest multi-starrers of its time. Written by Salim-Javed , it had Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor and several biggies of Hindi Cinema. It tanked at the box office and unfortunately sealed the fate of Desh Mukherjee.

Vijay Kishore Dubey : Known in the industry as V. K. Dubey, he passed away on November 06, 2010 at the age of 84. In a career spanning 65 years, he had contributed tremendously to the Indian music industry. He started his career in All India Radio and then worked for Radio Ceylone. Few years later he started a publicity concern with ace publicist Bunny Reuben. Along with him he also produced Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed ” Aashiq “. It starred Raj Kapoor, Padmini and Nanda. His final assignment was as the Artiste & Repertoire Chief of HMV [ now Saregama ].

Pankaj Advani : A film maker of limited success, Pankaj Advani passed away at the young age of 45 on November 11, 2010. He was an editing graduate from Film & Television Institute of India, Pune but started his career as a writer in 1989 with Shah Rukh Khan starrer ” Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa “. In 1993 he directed ” Sunday “, which won two National Awards but could not get commercial release. Then he moved to TV and produced popular shows like ” Bheja Fry “ and ” Toofan TV “. In 2000 Pankaj wrote and directed ” Urf Professor “, a digital movie co-produced by Shekhar Kapoor. In 2009 he wrote and directed  critically acclaimed ” Sankat City “, which is his only released film. It is sad that he died so young without getting recognition and his rightful dues from the film world.

Commonwealth Sh..(g)ames

As we all know Commonwealth Games 2010 are about to start in Delhi within a week, precisely on October 03 , 2010.  A symbol of the dying and fading British Empire , Commonwealth is the group of all the nations, which were under the  British rule at some point of time or other. A decaying and fading British Empire thought that at least through this group they can ameliorate their sense of loss and can feel proud and can show the world that once upon a time , UK used to rule upon such a big chunk of the hemisphere. Now this group has 72 countries as members and barring USA, which also was under British rule once upon a time, all the nations once ruled by UK, are part of the Commonwealth.

Personally I have no problem with the Commonwealth. Our first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru, loved everything British, so he was not willing to snap relations from the UK permanently. And because of this fact, the shameful symbol of our 200 years of slavery continues. We were eager to host 19th CWG [ Commonwealth Games ] and got a chance to host it in Delhi. We got the confirmation in 2003 and in spite of the seven long years, we were unable to complete all the construction works and all the other facilities at the CWG Village. Last couple of days were very disturbing for me. Every newspaper, every TV channel and all the tweets of various eminent people on the micro-blogging site twitter were full of negative reports on the CWG , being held in New Delhi. CWG are starting within a week but media coverage of the facilities in the CWG complex were disparaging. Almost all the countries , almost all the officials were very critical of the facilities being provided in the CWG village. Few days back BBC showed 15 photos of the the CWG village. There were filth and muck in the bathrooms,and marks of dogs paws on the mattresses.  Now whole word knows the facts and saw it too. 2010 CWG, Delhi’s predecessors , 2002 CWG , Manchester and 2006 CWG , Melbourne were not only successful but are appreciated even today for the opulence and grandeur. Another example also being sited as the mark of excellence ,  is the 2008 Olympics , Beijing. Compared to Beijing Olympic, India‘s CWG looks like a symbol of sheer incompetence. I was ashamed to read the following tweet of Salmaan Taseer,  the Governor of the Pakistani Punjab :

Some other remarks by the people,  who matter, are no less disparaging. Let us go through some glaring ones :

Dave Currie – [ New Zealand Chief of Mission ] :

” We’ve lost faith in the Organizing  Committee. Every time we raised an issue [ we received ] ‘ yes that will be fixed tomorrow ‘ , but you know that it wont be fixed . Its hard to work with someone if they dont admit a problem.”

Julia Gillard [ Australian Prime Minister ] :

There is obviously widespread concern about the games. The decision on whether to attend is a matter for individuals .

Craig Hunter [ England Chief of  Mission ] :

We looked at some towers today……They are deep in water and extremely uninhabitable and quite dagerous in many respects .

It is now alleged that we bribed 72 countries to get Delhi CWG. According to Daily Telegraph, India gave 100,000 in US Dollars to each country and got the CWG. India beat Canadian city Hamilton by 46-22 votes in the final rounds. In spite of the facts that our record was never great in CWG, we were eager to host the game. We got it in 2003 and yet we failed to put our house in order. Watch the following chart to know about our records in the CWG :

In spite of all these criticim, in spite of all the news that various nations are thinking of not coming for the games, in spite of the news of several players deciding to withdraw from the games, Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman CWG OC [ Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee ] is not perturbed. After 15 photos of the CWG Village were put on the BBC website, he was nonchalant and proudly proclaimed, ” From today, everything is going to be fine.I know how to take criticism in my stride. We will have a good game and we will take care of evrything. “

Equally shameless were the remarks of Lalit Bhanot,  Secretary General of CWG OC , ” They [ athletes ] may not be able to sustain their performance so they find some reason to not participate, but these things happen in every competition. “

Mr. Lalit Bhanot’s other comment about the difference of the concept of Western standard of hygiene and our standard of hygiene is equally deplorable and unpardoable.

Damage has been done. Atal Bihari Vajpayee‘s ” India Shinning ” is now ” India Ashamed ” under Man Mohan Singh. Our reputation has been damaged irreparably. Our national pride lies bruised and battered. A defaced and defiled nation looks helplessly. The Prime Minister held meetings with M. S. Gill and Jai Pal Reddy, to salvage the situation. Its like Sunil Shetty having a seminar on acting with Aftab Shivdasani and Vivek Mushran. Culprits are roaming free with immunity. Blame is thrust on the head of Suresh Kalmadi , Chairman CWG OC , alone. Is Sheila Dikshit not responsible ? Is Man Mohan Singh not responsible ? And what about Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi ? They rush to take credit of everything , which is successful and good. At this juncture of National Shame they both are silent like sphinx. Are they not responsible for the mess ? Instead of touring the remote corners of country, should not Rahul Gandhi take charge and try to salvage the situation in Delhi? At this juncture, isn’t CWG and our prestige more important than dining in the kitchen of a Dalit ? Doesn’t always acerbic and uncouth Mani Shankar Aiyer need a tight slap on his ugly and abominable face for saying that I will be happy if CWG  flops ?

Today as I am about to post the blog, I read that yesterday Akhil Kumar’s bed collapsed when he sat on it. Today a snake was found in one of the rooms. I saw the news that even Botswana is complaining about the CWG Village’s hygiene and the unlivable conditions. I hang my head in shame. The wonder that was India does not exist anymore. A 5000 year old Nation’s prestige lies in shambles. I am a sad to witness my country’s journey – from India Shinning to India Ashamed. My Views on Jammu & Kashmir

I know this is going to be my most controversial blog. But when the valley is burning and there are more than 100 deaths, how can I keep quiet ? Let us admit that there are so many people in India, who are biased against muslims. I personally don’t like the generalization : every muslim is not a terrorist but every terrorist is muslim. This notion is wrong. Such kind of sweeping remarks humiliate the community. It instills a kind of inferiority complex and a sense of insecurity in the psyche of the general Muslim. In my opinion, people are more concerned about their bread and butter, if they can afford that, rather than supporting a jehadi outfit. They are also a helpless spectator like us when an organization like Al-Qaeda strikes somewhere. What we expect from the muslim community in such a scenario? Do we really expect that an ordinary muslim should take a gun and start fighting a jehadi or a terrorist ? Look at the photo below. These poor fellows could also be an easy target.

Let me take you to the days of Hitler. He was a democratically elected and legitimate ruler of Germany. But later on he became an autocrat and in the worst holocaust , murdered millions. German nation endured it with helpless silence. But they didn’t support Hitler. In the same way, all the muslims are not the supporters of Al-Qaeda, but they too are helpless spectators. They are too feeble to stand and fight Al-Qaeda. Moreover if the might of the world is unable to contain Al-Qaeda, then how can we expect that muslim masses should stand and oppose them ?

JAMMU & KASHMIR : Geographical Position : So if we start with the fact that all muslims are not supporters of the jehadi group, then we can view Jammu & Kashmir crisis in right perspective. To say that whole of the province is in turmoil ,is wrong. Geography of the province is unique. Jammu is Hindu majority part of the province and they are not spearheading an agitation for cessation. They are happy to be Indian. Laddakh part of the province is Buddhist majority and they also don’t have anti-India feelings. They are contented as Indians. Northern Areas of the province known as Gilgit, Hunza ( Baltit ) and Skardu are under Pakistan’s control. And Aksai Chin part of Laddakh is under Chinese control. So you have to divide the state of Jammu & Kashmir into 4 different parts : Jammu, Laddakh , the Kashmir Valley and the Northern Areas { Gilgit, Hunza ( Baltit ) & Skardu }.

KASHMIRIAT : People of earlier generation used to take pride in Kashmiriat. according to them, the state of Jammu & kashmir is a testimony or a fine example of secularism. Let us agree that this culture of Kashmiriat is dead. Jammu has no love for the Valley and the feeling in the Valley is reciprocated. During the recent floods of Leh, people from every corner of the country rushed to help, but there was no voice of concern from the leaders of the Valley. And I am not pointing fingers only at separatists. People like Mehbooba Mufti, her father, who was once the Home Minister of India, were not concerned at all. So why we are trying to keep a facade of so-called Kashmiriat alive. Kashmiriat died with the death of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.

SOLUTION : According to me , state of Jammu & Kashmir should be trifurcated .

1 – Hindu majority Jammu should be made a separate and 29th province of India.

2 – Buddhist majority Laddakh should be made the 7th Union Territory of India.

3 – Northern Areas, as and when taken back from Pakistan, should be christened ” Seemant Pradesh “ and should be made the 8th Union Territory of The Nation. No need of saying that Aksai Chin , when liberated, will be with Laddakh.

4 – Now comes the question of The Valley a. k. a. kashmir. First of all we have to make a conducive and congenial atmosphere for the return of the Kashmiri Pandits to their homeland. Every leader of Kashmir have said that Kashmiri Pandits are the part and parcel of our culture. So they should be settled in The Valley and ” Panun kashmir “ should be made as their homeland. It could be like the National Capital Region of Delhi. Almost every party have rejected ” Panun Kashmir “. They say that it would not be a viable entity. But if ” Dadra & Nagar Haveli ” or a tiny ” Diu ” could be a Union Territory then why not ” Panun Kashmir ” ?

Now the question comes about the rest of Kashmir .

1 – We must acknowledge that there are real and genuine grievances of the people. And the central government should address it on the priority basis. It should be addressed as Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee famously said , ” everything will be done insaniyat ke dayere men.”

2 – Loss of life is not acceptable under any circumstances. Trigger happy cops should be restrained and duly punished , if found guilty.

3 – AFSPA ( Armed Forces Special Powers Act ) can also be withdrawn as a test case. It could again be used if need arises or situation gets out of control.

4  - I also endorse of the steps taken by All Party Delegation. There is nothing wrong in going to the house of Syed Ali Shah Geelani or meeting Mirwaiz  Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik. There should never be a protocol coming in the way of meeting our own people.

5 – Kashmir has article 370 in the Indian Constitution to protect her interest. Kashmir has a separate constitution and a separate flag also. [ Only Indian State to have it ] So if the people want some more power, it could be talked. There is no harm in reaching to the people.

6 – If people of the Valley is not satisfied with Omar Abdullah, he should resign. Congress, in order to have a government in the province, should not support him.

7 – National media, specially Barkha Dutt is widely criticized for her reporting, but she has a point. We should understand that.

6 – Terrorism is a worldwide phenomenon. People of kashmir should not be held responsible for this scourge.

Vidur’s Film Diary – August 2010

Its August and like much-needed rains, it brought some cheers in the industry also. Dry spell of the first half of the year is broken. Last month saw some genuine hits and these hits came as a much-needed respite. ” I Hate Luv Storys “, ” Udaan “, ” Tere Bin Laden “ and ” Once Upon A Time In Mumbai “ became sleeper hits. August starts with the promising note as ” Aisha “ releases too much critical and commercial acclaim. Then ” Peepli [Live] “ changed the whole scenario.

Though all is not well because compared to Hindi films, Hollywood’s latest flick ” Inception “ garnered better share at the box office.

SURAJ PRAKASH :

He died on July 28 at the age of 79. His obituary should have been in the Vidur’s Film Diary – July 2010. But I was not aware of his death, as national media ignored it completely and it was reported only in IMPPA Bulletin, Film Information and Screen. It is sad state of affair for a man , who gave ” Jab Jab Phool Khile ” (1965 ) to the industry. He made his debut with Rajendra Kumar, Mala Sinha starrer ” Patang “. His second film ” Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath ” starring Shashi Kapoor and Nanda was the first solo hit of lyricist Anand Bkshi. His third film ” Jab Jab Phool Khile ” changed the career graph of Shashi Kapoor, Nanda, Anand Bakshi and Kalyanji Anandji. It was a block-buster of its time. After that he made several films like ” Aamne Saamne ” and ” Juari ” . He ghost-directed ” Bewafa Sanam” , officially a Gulshan Kumar directed film. His last film ” Mere Jeevan Sathi ” ( 2006 ) starring Akshay Kumar, Karishma Kapoor and Amisha Patel was as a producer. It is sad that he went unsung.

KAMAL KAPOOR :

Veteran actor Kamal Kapoor died on August 02 in Mumbai. He was 90 years old. Today’s generation might not recognize him but once upon a time Kamal Kapoor was a very successful villain in Hindi films.

I saw him in ” Johar Mehmood In Goa ” for the first time. He played a Portuguese officer in the film. His menacing look and fierce demeanour is still fresh in my memory. One particular scene , where he puts his hand in the aquarium and lifts a fish from the water while torturing the freedom fighter, is still fresh in my memory. Fish was fighting for its life in his hands and freedom fighter was being tortured in front of him. He was so brilliant in the film and he performed so well in this particular scene, that no connoisseur of film will ever forget it.His face and his eyes were his assets and he used them for maximum effect. After Johar Mehmood In Goa I watched him in several films and he was always brilliant even in mediocre films.

He is survived by his children and grandchildren, producer Srishti Behl Arya and producer – director Goldie Behl. Incidentally my student Sonali Bendre is married to Goldie Behl.

Vidur’s Film Diary – July 2010

Its July and half the year is gone. First half of the year ended and there is not a very heartening news for the industry.. Industry suffered losses to the tune of 300 crores. ” RAAVAN “,  “KITES “, ” VEER “, ” PRINCE “, ” TEEN PETTI ” and ” RANN “ were some of the notable flops. From January to june 81 Hindi films were released.Out of these, only 10 films managed to make some profit. First quarter ie January to march saw only two hits : ” PAA ” and ” LOVE SEX AUR DHOKHA “. Second quarter saw only three films hitting the bulls eyes. They were : ” HOUSEFULL “, ” BADMAASH COMPANY “ and ” RAAJNEETI “. Rest 5, somehow barely recovered the cost.

MANOHARI SINGH :

Hindi Film’s most sought after saxophone player, Manohari da died on July 13, 2010 following a cardiac arrest. He was chief assistant of S. D. Burman and R. D. Burman. This legendary saxophone player adorned many hindi film songs such as my all time favourites – Dil Jo Na Keh Saka from ‘ BHEEGI RAAT ” and evergreen Gata Rahe Mera Dil from ” GUIDE “. He was awarded Radio Mirchi’s Musical Award in 2009.

SATISH BHATNAGAR :

An eminent screenplay and dialogue writer, Satish Bhatnagar died on July 07, 2010. He used to write screenplay for Late B. R. Chopra, along with Dr. Rahi Masoom Reza. Last film which he wrote for him was BAGHBAN. For others, he wrote very successful films such as ” Maryada “, ” Seeta Aur Geeta “, ” Himalay Se Ooncha “, ” Satte Pe Satta “, and Prakash Mehra”s “  Hera Pheri “.
It is extremely sad that he died in penury and did not have money to pay his hospital bills. He could survive with The Film Writer’s Association’s financial aid.

RAVI BASWANI :

Acclaimed comrdian Ravi Baswani died in Haldwani, Uttarakhand on July 27th, where he had gone to scout locations for his directorial venture. An extremely talented actor, Ravi Baswani shall always be remembered for films like ” Chashme Badoor “ and ” Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron “. Chashme Badoor ( 1981) , was directed by Sai Paranjpe was his first film. Then he acted in his most successful film ” Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron ” ( 1983 ) directed by Kundan Shah. He was recently seen in ” Bunty Aur Babli ” ( 2005) , and ” Yun Hota To Kya Hota ” ( 2006 ). The last film, Naseeruddin Shah’s first directorial venture, is now his last film.

Baswani also acted on television and was very popular in Doordarshan’s 1980s hit serial  ” Idhar Udhar ” .

Incidently for his cult film Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron , he won Filmfare Best Comedian Award. He was dean of acting in Film & Television Institute of India also, where he leant acting years ago. From Chashme Buddoor ( 1981 ) to Yun Hota To Kya Hota ( 2006 ) , a career spanning 35 years, he acted in 30 films.

3 – Hritik Roshan will be the 5th Hindi film actor, after Amitabh Bachchan,Shah Rukh Khan,Aishwarya Rai and Salman Khan, to have his wax statue featured at the Madame Tussaud’s wax museun in London.

4 -Sudhir Mishra and Ketan Mehta were conferred French government’s award ARTS ET LETTERS.

Viveka Babajee :

I was thinking that this month, as it is coming to an end, there wont be any tragedy. I was hoping for the best but got shock of my life when I read a tweet of Priyanka Chopra on the morning of June 26. She condoled the suicide of Viveka Babajee. I was shocked to read that. I was introduced to Viveka Babajee, when she was signed for a film ” Yeh Kaisi Mohabbat ” in 2002. It was being produced by the father of a student of mine.Govinda’s nephew Krushna Abhishek, another student of mine, was playing the main lead.
She was born in Mauritius and was crowned Miss Mauritius in 1993. In 1994 she represented her country in the Miss Universe pageant. She lost and incidentally Sushmita Sen won the coveted crown. She came to India and shot to fame when she featured in the Kama Sutra advertisements. For the next 10 years she remained one of the top models of the country.
I used to meet her during the shooting of ” Yeh Kaisi Mohabbat “. Then bumped into her at the release function of the film. After that I lost touch. It is alleged that her failed relationship with Gautam Vora is the cause for her suicide. Whatever is the reason,It is sad to hear about her demise and that too at a young age of 37.

Saurabh Usha Narang :

He shall ever be remembered as the director of  ” Vaastu Shastra “, a film produced by Ram Gopal Verma. He directed this Sushmita Sen starrer in 2004. He was trying to make a film  ” Return Gift ” with rajeev Khandelwal. He was suffering from stomach cancer and had gone to Sri Lanka for treatment. He died at Colombo. At the time of his death, he was just 37 years old. Another young life ended so soon.

It is strange coincidence that both the persons died at the age of 37. A bizarre coincidence.

3 - Kiran Rao’s directorial venture ” DHOBI GHAT ” , an Aamir Khan production , has signed  a composer who got Oscar for his score in ” BROKEBACK MOUNTAINS “.

4 – Resul Pookutty becomes member of the Academy of Motion Pictures.He is the first Asian sound technician to become member of the Academy.
