Haradhan Bandopadhyay :

Haradhan Bandopadhyay, a favourite actor of Satyajit Ray and a loving grandfather of Bengali films, died on January 07 , 2013 in the morning .

From “Mahanagar” to “Barfi” , his loving portrayals in films enthralled us. He is the actor who played Jhilmil’s Daju in Barfi.

S. Ramanathan :

Producer and director S. Ramanathan died on January 09 , 2013 at the age of 83 .

He was the man , who produced ” Bombay To Goa ” [ 1972 ] and thus gave Amitabh Bachchan his first big break . Later on he produced ” Geraftaar ” [ 1985 ] and brought together Amitabh Bachchan , Rajnikanth and Kamal Hassan . In between he also produced and directed ” Mahaan ” [ 1983 ] , the film which starred Amitabh Bachchan in triple role .

Month of November 2012 will always be remembered for the release of ” Jab Tak Hai Jaan ” , the last directorial venture of Yash Chopra .
November 2012 will also be special for the clash of the titans . ” Jab Tak Hai Jaan ” of Late Yash Chopra and ” Son Of Sardar “ of Ajay Devgn clashed at the box office . Though both the films came out as winners .
November 2012 is also marked because of the release of Aamir Khan‘s much – awaited ” Talaash ” .

After successful January 2011 , February was quite dull for the industry .  And March was simply disastrous . First quarter is gone without any great success. No big releases because of the World Cup , no great success because of the bad films. There were just 6 releases in March and that too insignificant ones .

GOGA KAPOOR : A very prominent villain of Hindi film industry Goga Kapoor breathed his last on March 03, 2011. He was 70 at the time of his death. He began his life in Delhi and during his college days , he used to work in stage plays. In Shakespeare’s ” Othello ” , he played the main protagonist and Mr. Amitabh Bachchan played a supporting role. Later on when he joined films , he did more than 20 films with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan as his arch antagonist.

His first film was ” Jwala “ in 1971. He came to prominence with B. R. Chopra’s tele serial ” Mahabharat “ , where he played Kans. His other films were ” Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak ” , ” Zanjeer ” , ” Hera Pheri ” , ” Satte Pe Satta ” , ” Yaarana ” ,“ Agneepath ” , ” Shakti ” , ” Coolie ” , ” Toofan ” , ” Patthar Ke Phool ” , ” Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa ” and many more. He workrd in some international projects also. In total he worked in more than 500 films.

He is survived by his wife and 3 daughters . I have trained his younger daughter Payal Kapoor, who is a wonderful actor.

NAVIN NISCHOL : This FTII , Pune graduate , a Gold Medalist and a dashing hero of 70s , died of heart attack while going to Pune along with his friends. On the fateful day of March 19 , 2011, he started his journey in the morning. But died of heart attack before reaching Pune. He was 65 at the time of his death.

He made his debut in 1970 in Mohan Sehgal’s ” Sawan Bhadon “ with Rekha. The film was a super hit of the year and it stablished Navin Nischol’s career. He , later on , worked in many hits including ” Parwana “ , where Mr. Amitabh Bachchan was playing villain’s role , while Navin Nischol was the main protagonist with Yogita Bali.

” Dhund ” , ” Hanste Zakhm ” , ” Buddha Mil Gaya ” , ” Woh Main Nahin ” and ” Victoria No. 203 “ were his other immensely successful films. Later on from 1980, he worked as character artiste in films like ” The Burning Train ” . ” Khosla Ka Ghosla ” and ” Break Ke Baad “. The last mentioned one was his last film.

He was one of the few major actors, who started working in TV serials quite early. His most popular serial was ” Dekh Bhai Dekh “ .

BOB CHRISTO : An actor of Australian origin , Bob Christo , died in the morning of February 20, 2011 in Bengaluru. He was 70 at the time of his death. He was introduced to Hindi film world by Sanjay Khan in his film ” Abdullah “ . Later on he even worked opposite Mr. Amitabh Bachchan in several hit films like ; ” Namak Halal ” , ” Agneepath ” , ” Kaalia ” , ” Nastik ” and ” Mard ” . His other hit films were ; ” Qurbani ” and immensely popular ” Mr. India ” . Kids used to love his dialogue in ” Mr. India “ , ‘ Indian God bolta hai………. maarta bhi hai …… “ . His other memorable role was in the epic serial ” The Great Maratha ” as Ahmad Shah Abdali , made by his mentor Sanjay Khan. In total , he worked in more than 200 films. At the time of his death , he was writing his autobiography ; ” Flashback : My Times In Bollywood And Beyond ” .

3 – Asha Bhosle has been conferred with an honorary D. Litt. by The Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University , Nashik .

4 - Rajasthan government abolished entertainment tax and gave 100% tax exemption to all cinemas in the state . Rajasthan has become 2nd state after Punjab to give 100% tax exemption .

1 - Tamil : My students Anushka Shetty is working in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil – Telugu bi-lingual ” Ponniyin Selvan ” .

2 - Telugu : My student Tara Alisha is making her debut with Naga Chaitanya , another student of mine , in a Telugu film ” 100 Percent Love ” . Nag Chaitanya is also doing some other Telugu films like :  ” Autonagar Surya ” , “ I am Number One ” , ” Dream Lover ” and ” Bejawada Rowdilu ” .

3 – Bangla : My two students ;  Priyangshu Chatterjee is appearing in a Bangla film ” Punoruthhan ” , and Sameer Aftab is appearing in ” Handcuff ” .

4 – Bhojpuri : My student Swati Varma is appearing in 2 Bhojpuri films. They are : ” Diljale “ and ” International Daroga “.

5- Gujarati : My student Pal Raval is appearing in a Gujarati film ” Saachu Sukh Gujarat Ma ” .

6 – Haryanvi : My student Poonam Jhaver is appearing in a Haryanvi film ” Muthbed ” . This multi-crore film is the first Haryanvi film in almost two decades.

Theatre This Month :

1 - My 2 students Parizaad Zorabian Irani and Vinay Jain are working in a play called ” Dinner With Friends “ directed by Feroz Abbas Khan.

2 – My student and theatre personality Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal is staging her play ” The Vagina Monologue “ in Mumbai once again. Sonali Sachdev, another student of mine , is working in the play as an artiste.
