2012 gave us only 10 super hits and some major flops . ” Ek Tha Tiger ” , ” Dabangg 2 ” , ” Rowdy Rathore ” , ” Agneepath ” , Jab Tak Hai Jaan ” , ” Barfi ” , ” Housefull 2 ” , ” Son Of Sardar ” , ” Bol Bachchan ” and ” Talash “ were declared hits . ” Talash “ could not make it to the 100 crore club . It earned only 93 crores . But all the other 9 movies earned more than 100 crores . ” Ek Tha Tiger “ became the most successful film of 2012 . It raked in 198 crores .

Screen Awards for 2012 were given on January 12 , 2013 . I have written a blog about that and mentioned that my 3 students ; Ranbir Kapoor , Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif got the awards .

Film industries oldest and one of the most prestigious award – Filmfare Awards were also announced and it was held on January 21 , 2013 .

Once again Ranbir Kapoor won the Award for Best Actor [ Male ] for ” Barfi ! “ .

My 3 students got Screen Awards and now 2 students have won Filmfare Award also . This way my 5 students have won these two most prestigious and celebrated awards in 2013 . The year started with a bang and seems to be very promising .

There are people who jump to celebrate so-called stupendous success of some obscure serial . On the basis of such serials they proudly announce that they are the best in bollywood . I don’t have courage to boast and blow my own trumpet . My acting academy may not be the best acting academy of Mumbai or it may not be the best acting institute of India but my students are winning Screen and Filmfare Awards . It might not be the best acting school of Bollywood but it is not for nothing that 5 actors trained by me got the two most prestigious awards this year .

Through this blog I would like to celebrate the success of my students , Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma , who got Filmfare Awards this year .

I congratulate all the above mentioned students on behalf of all the current students and staff of Vidur’s Kreating Charakters . May they achieve much more in the coming year .

Among the winners there are 3 actors , who are my students . Ranbir Kapoor won the Best Actor [ Male ] Award for ” Barfi ! ” . He , along with Priyanka Chopra , also won Best Jodi of the Year Award . 60 Years of Film ” Daag ”

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 09 , 2012           09.30 P.M.

Dilip Kumar’s ” Daag ” , which got him his first Filmfare Best Actor Award , was the 4th biggest grosser of 1952 . After ” Aan “ , it was the second hit of Dilip Kumar in 1952 . Dilip Kumar played an alcoholic youth , who is driven by self – destruction .

” Daag “ is totally different from other three hits of 1952 . ” Aan “ , ” Baiju Bawra ” and ” Jaal “ are the other three hits . This Dilip Kumar , Nimmi , Lalita Pawar and Usha Kiran starrer was produced and directed by Amiya Chakrabarty , who incidentally directed Dilip Kumar’s debut film ” Jwar Bhata ” [ 1944 ] . Kanhaiyalal and  Leela Mishra played another important roles . If my memory is not failing me , Ram Mohan played Dilip Kumar’s friend and perhaps ” Daag “ is his debut film .

Shankar – Jaikishan gave music for the film and its one song ” Ae Mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal , Gham Ki Duniya Se Dil Bhar Gaya ………………………… “ is still popular and hummed by general public and connoisseurs alike . It was written by Shailendra and it has many versions . Sad and playful versions were sung by Talat Mehmood and one version was sung by Lata Mangeshkar . ” Preet Ye Kaisi Bol Ri Duniya ………………………. “ sung by Lata Mangeshkar was another smash hit .

According to my memory , 2 other movies were made after ” Daag ” , using the same name . ” Daag – A Poem Of Love “ was produced and directed by Yash Chopra in 1973 . It was the first movie of Yash Raj Films . Another movie ” Daag : The Fire “ was directed by Raj Kanwar in 1999 .

As an acting trainer , its my job to make my students aware of these iconic films and I do it regularly in my acting class in Mumbai and through my blogs .

In future I resolve to make it a regular feature in Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , my acting school in Mumbai .

Box Office Blues – November 2012

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 04 , 2012           11.40 P.M.

Second blog in this category [ Box Office Blues ] is delayed by 4 days . I promised to write it on the last day of every month . But November was too hectic . I was in the process of starting Batch No. 69 of my Acting Institute in Mumbai and thus I missed the dateline .

Anyhow I am posting it today .

First Week – November 02

1 –Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana : This film has Kunal Kapoor in the main lead and it also had Anangsha Biswas in a small role . Both my students were appreciated in this modest hit .

2 – 1920 Evil Returns : This famous franchisee of Vikram Bhatt was a major hit .

3 – Ata Pata Laapata : This film by Rajpal Yadav was a major disaster and was a damp squib at the box office .

4 – Le Gaya Saddam : This film was unmitigable disaster . I will always  be a bit special for me because Chirag Patil , a very old student of mine , played a major role in the film . Chirag is incidentally cricketer Sandip Patil’s son .

5 – Future To Bright Hai Ji : Future of this film was definitely not bright at the box office . It tanked without trace .

Second Week – November 09

1 – Its Rocking Dard – E – Disco : Aryeman Ramsay is also my student . He made his debut opposite Amitabh Bachchan in ” Family ” . This flop film will be known for the music director Bappi Lahiri , who made his acting debut .

Third Week – November 16 [ 13 Deepawali ]

1 – Jab Tak Hai Jaan : This directorial venture of Yash Chopra will always be remembered as his last swan – song . It has Shah Rukh Khan in the main lead . It has Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma as the two female protagonists . Both are my students , though Anushka does not acknowledge .

It has one more student of mine . His name is Aashish Singh . He is the Executive Producer of the film .

This film is a huge hit . It has garnered more than 117 crore till now . Apart from ” Ek Tha Tiger “ , this is the second Yash Raj Films to garner more than 100 crore this year .

2 – Son Of Sardaar : This Ajay Devgn starrer clashed with the above mentioned film .  Tanisha Mukerjii , again a very old student , was associated with this film as the Executive producer .

Jeetu Verma , another old student , played an important role in it .

This film also entered in the 100 crore club , collecting more than 101 crore at the box office .

Fourth Week  – November 23

1 – Operation Mumbai : …………………………………………………. This Kunal Kapoor starrer failed at the box office .

Fifth Week – November 30

1 – Talaash : This Aamir Khan starrer was a much – awaited film . Apart from Aamir Khan and Rani Mukherjee , it also has Kareena Kapoor . She was my student before she signed ” Refugee ” .

2 – Jeet Lengey Jahaan : It failed to win anything and tanked without trace .

Month of November 2012 will always be remembered for the release of ” Jab Tak Hai Jaan ” , the last directorial venture of Yash Chopra .

November 2012 will also be special for the clash of the titans . ” Jab Tak Hai Jaan ” of Late Yash Chopra and ” Son Of Sardar “ of Ajay Devgn clashed at the box office . Though both the films came out as winners .

November 2012 is also marked because of the release of Aamir Khan‘s much – awaited ” Talaash ” .

New Female Playback Singers of Hindi Films

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           NOVEMBER 10 , 2012           00.35 A.M.

When ” Alam Ara ” , the first Indian talkie , hit the screen in 1931 , an era started , which could easily be called the era of singing stars . All the actors sang their own songs on the screen . Well known female stars of that era were no exception . From Devika Rani to Leela Chitnis and from Kanan Devi to lesser known starlets, every heroine worth the name sang their own songs .

Then came the era of Noor Jahan and Suraiya . Both were immensely popular stars and huge singers of their generation . Their songs and their films are still popular . Their retirement from the films finally brought an end to the glorious era of singing stars . Salma Agha , another singing star , came in ” Nikah ” [ 1982 ]  but it was an exception . Singing stars era had ended much earlier .

After the end of singing stars era , playback singing in films became popular . Rajkumari Dubey could be called the first female playback singer . She started her singing career in 1940 . Her songs with Mukesh in ” Bawre Nain “[ 1950 ]  are still famous and they are memorable . Modern day movie goer are familiar with her song from ” Pakeeza “[ 1972 ]  . It is ….. najaria ki mari mari more saiyan …….

Another playback singer from that era was Shamshad Begum . She rose to prominence with ” Khazanchi ” [ 1941 ] and ” Khandaan ” [ 1942 ] . Her career suffered major set back with the advent and subsequent supremacy of Lata Mangeshkar andAsha Bhosle . Amirbai Karnataki was another famous playback singer from that era .

Then began an era which is known as Lata Mangeshkar Era . She , along with her younger sibling Asha Bhosle , dominated the playback scene of Hindi films like a colossus for almost 5 decades .

During their era many singers came and went into oblivion . Geeta Dutt , Suman Kalyanpur , Kamal Barot ,  Sudha Malhotra , Mubarak Begum and Sharda came and eclipsed quickly without leaving a mark .

In 70s , while Lata Mangeshkar was still reigning supreme , again a new crop of female playback singers emerged . Alka Yagnik , Sadhana Sargam , Kavita Krishnamurty andAnuradha Paudwal came , gave some memorable hits and faded into oblivion . Lata Mangeshkar still ruled and gave memorable hits like ; Yash Chopra directed  ” Veer – Zaara ” [ 2004 ] .

Now a new crop of playback singers are hovering on the horizon . Shreya Ghoshal has become numero Uno like Lata Mangeshkar and Sunidhi Chauhan has almost taken Asha Bhosle’s place . But there are other female playback singers  also . They are fast emerging on the scene .

ADITI SINGH SHARMA : With chart – busters like ; ” Aali Re …. ” & ” Dilli , Dilli …… ” in ” No One Killed Jessica “ and ” Chhoomantar ….. ” in ” Mere Brother Ki Dulhan “ , she became a singer to watch in future .

ALYSSA MENDONSA : Daughter of Loy Mendonsa of Shankar – Ahsan – Loy fame , she sang ” Uff Teri Ada ……. ” in ” Karthik Calling Karthik “ and immensely popular ” Khwabon Ke Parindey ….. ” in ” Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara “ .

ANUSHKA MANCHANDA : She sang re-mix version of ” Dum Maro Dum …… ” with a rare conviction and forced everyone to take notice of her talent .

HARSHDEEP KAUR : With ” Katiya Karoon ….. ” of  ” Rockstar “ and ” Jugni ………….. ” of ” Cocktail “ , she hit big and is surely on her way to the top .

A satirist , an actor , a producer and director Jaspal Bhatti died at the age of 57 in a road accident . His car rammed into a tree on October 24 , 2012 when he was returning after promoting his latest film ” Power Cut ” .

Jaspal Bhatti : This Is Not Funny Sir Ji !

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           OCTOBER 26 , 2012           00.30 A.M.

Just four days after Yash Chopra‘s death , one more tragedy struck us . India‘s most loved comic genius and satirist Jaspal Singh Bhatti died yesterday on October 25 , 2012 in the morning in car accident . He was just 57 at the time of his death . One more fine human being is gone .

I had no personal contacts with him . I knew him only through his work and it is needless to say that I am a huge fan . Years ago , I saw his two TV serials, which came on Doordarshan, and I was hooked . Those serials were hugely popular . Name of the serials are ;  Ulta Pulta &  Flop Show

He had sharp and very subtle sense of humour. It was not crass or vulgar . Whole family can sit and watch and enjoy his satirical take on the mundane problems of the common man and that precisely everyone did in those days .

I am posting photos of his many campaigns , which were hilarious as well as hard – hitting at the same time .

Before he hit the national television , he , during his college days in Amritsar , used to do street plays . ” Nonsense Club ” was his most famous street play . For some time he also worked as a cartoonist for The Tribune .

Later on he moved to do some more serials and did many movies also . Again he left his mark .

Towards the end , he set up a training school and a studio in Chandigarh . It is known as Joke Factory .

He died in a freak accident when his car , driven by his son , rammed into a tree . He was returning after promoting his latest film ” Power Cut ” . We have lost a fine comedian with a sense of social justice .

I deeply regret and mourn his death . On behalf of all the students and whole staff of Vidur’s Kreating Charakters , I pay homage to the departed soul .

R.I.P. Mr. Bhatti ! Though your last act is definitely not funny .

Yash Chopra , the eternal romantic died on October 21 , 2012 . He was 80 years young at the time of his death .

On Sunday night , I was sitting in my study and was writing blog about Karan Johar’s  film ” Student Of The Year “ , I suddenly checked my twitter handle and was shocked beyond words . There were spate of tweets about the demise of legendary film maker Yash Raj Chopra .

Within moments several posters of his films , many scenes of his all – time classics rushed to the firmament of my memory lane . Though unaware of his greatness then , first Yash Chopra film , which I watched was ” Waqt ” [ 1965 ] . I watched it in Amarjyoti Talkies , Deoria . During my years in Allahabad , I watched many of his films and became aware of his greatness . This ” Silsila ” [ 1981 ] continued till ” Veer Zaara ” [ 2004 ] .

I have nothing new to say about Yash Chopra . Everything is there in news papers . What I would like to say is , I had honour and privilege to meet Yash ji , as he is fondly called, several times .

I was called by Aditya Chopra to train 6 new – comers of  ” Mohabbatein ” [ 2000 ] . One day when I finished class with Jimmy Sheirgill , Uday Chopra , Jugal Hansraj , Shamita Shetty , Preeti Jhangiani and Kim Sharma and came out of the room , I saw Yash ji sitting there in the outer room . I rushed to greet him . He fondly shook hand with me and said , ” I am hearing great things about you .” I was overwhelmed . ” Mohabbatein “ was my first big film . And Yash Raj Films was my first big banner , I was sure that after the release of this film I would be able to come out of my obscurity . And here was a legend complimenting me about my training , I felt ecstatic .

It was not a compliment by some wannabe . It was from The Legend himself . To understand my feelings and elated state after Yash ji’s compliment just look at his credentials .

When I was working with Uday Chopra as his private tutor , I used to go to Yash ji’s iconic bungalow in Juhu . I bumped into him several times . He was always gracious , always kind . Though he was a legend and I was not even a spec in the scheme of universe .

Once , years later , I went to meet Uday Chopra at Yash Raj Studio . I came out of his office after meeting him and approached the lift . Yash ji was standing there . Door of lift opened . Yash ji went in . I hesitated to enter and was standing still in front of the door . To my utter surprise Yash ji told me to come in . I went in and was almost numb that I am standing so close to him . I am sharing the space with him . Any other person of his stature would have ignored a non – entity like me . But Yash ji , in spite of being a legend , was kind enough to gesture me to come in . I will never forget that moment .

I am honoured that I got an opportunity to work with his banner . It was an experience to remember . Today as I am writing this blog , I remember several fond memories of the legend , who was so kind , ever smiling and always benevolent .

Apart from Mr. Dev Anand , Mr. Yash Raj Chopra is the most important factor in my life . He , along with Aditya Chopra and Uday Chopra , helped an obscure Acting Trainer and thus made me what I am today .Vidur’s Kreating Charakters ,  as an Acting Institute and Acting Trainer Vidur , as a person owe their existence to Yash ji and his Yash Raj Films .

Thank you sir ! I will always be grateful to you because you never made me feel small in your presence . I always got love from you , though I deserved none . You were always condescending , though I was not worthy of anything . You were always kind , though I was just a pigmy in front of a titan like you .
