Last week’s release “ Gulal ” belongs to a rare genre in Hindi films . Political films are seldom made and if made , they are coated in sugar . Hard hitting political films are in microscopic minority .
Gulal hits you hard . It shows a decadent Rajput culture , full of conceit , deceit , debauchery and conspiracy . After independence , when India was standing on the threshold of a new journey , Rajputs of erstwhile princely states were conspiring against the new democracy and people of India .
Anurag Kashyap handles this subject brilliantly . Camera work is splendid and lighting reflects the mood of the film . Shot on authentic locations Gulal unfolds a new vista in front of your eyes . Background score helps to sustain the mood . Songs are melodious and add to the flavour of the scene. Picturization of two mujra songs and the election song is superb .
A film is nothing if actors can’t portray their character . K.K. Menon is awesome . From his first film “ Panch ” to his latest “ Gulal ” he has an envious record of essaying characters of various hues with aplomb .
Piyush Mishra , a theatre actor of repute , is another multi faceted genius , who has given music , written lyrics and enacted a role and he excels in all the departments . He brings house down with laughter in the scene where he is trying to talk to President Bush .
Abhimanyu Singh is another gem , who was struggling to find his rightful place in the industry . He will get now , which was always his .
Mahi Gill is going to be another Tabu or Smita Patil . After “ Dev D ” its another superlative performance by her .
All the other artistes lend able support .
Its a new cinema , its a world class cinema , which any connoisseur of cinema should not miss .
