An Old & Feeble Sadhana - A Year Before Her Death

An Old & Feeble Sadhana ji – A Year Before Her Death

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 31, 2015           10.15 P.M.

On December 25th, 2015, when the world was celebrating Christmas, I read a news and suddenly all around me my world crumbled. I read that SADHANA ji bid adieu to this ephemeral world. My memories took me away from the metropolitan Mumbai of 2015 and ushered me into the dark, humid hall of Amarjyoti Talkies, Deoria. The year was 1965 and the film I went to watch was ” Waqt “, Yash Chopra directed 1st multi-starrer of India. Passing through the pan-strewn gate and boundary walls of Amarjyoti Talkies, I fought a valiant battle to get the ticket and entered the hall.

Film started and drama gripped the audience. As film progressed, SADHANA ji made entry and her entry was greeted with thunderous applause and whistles. In the film she lip-synced famous Asha Bhosle songs like ;

कौन आया कि निगाहों में चमक जाग उठी ……………………..

चेहरे पे ख़ुशी छा जाती है , आँखों में सुरूर आ जाता है ………………………

and

हम जब सिमट के आपकी बाँहों में आ गए …………………..

Her fringe hairstyle, tight Choodidar & Kurta and enchanting smile threw a spell over my adolescent mind. I still vividly remember my first screen encounter with SADHANA ji .

As Christmas 2015 night progressed, I remembered her other famous songs. Even after so many years, they are still mint fresh in my memory. They are ;

Death has snatched her away from me and my memories. But her spell will live with me forever. On the last day of 2015, as the world is busy celebrating advent of 2016, I am sitting in my study in Mumbai and writing this obituary and paying homage to one of the most beautiful actor of my time.

Sadhana Shivdasani

September 2, 1941 – December 25, 2015

Born in 1941, SADHANA ji migrated to India from Karachi during the post-partition riots. Her dad was influenced by cinema. In fact he had named his daughter Sadhana after the famous actress Sadhana Bose. [ Sadhona Bose was an Indian actress and a dancer. She acted in movies like Meenakshi, where she played the lead. A contemporary of Uday Shankar, in the 1930s she staged a number of ballets in Kolkata, including Bhookh on Bengal famine which was a pioneering work in presenting contemporary themes on stage. ]

Sadhana Shivdasani, better known mononymously as Sadhana, was one of the top actresses in the 1960s and the early-1970s. In 1955 she started her career and played a chorus girl in the song “Mud Mud Ke Na Dekh Mud Mud Ke” in Raj Kapoor‘s Shree 420.

When she was 15 years old, she was approached by some producers who had seen her act in a college play. They cast her in India’s first Sindhi language film titled Abaana (1958), where she played the role of Sheila Ramani‘s younger sister. Her remuneration was INR 1.00 , yes, One rupee only.

A photograph of her publicizing the film appeared in a movie magazine Screen. It was then that Sashadhar Mukherjee, one of Hindi cinema’s producer, noticed her. She joined Mukherjee’s acting school along with her debutant co-star and S. Mukherjee’s son Joy Mukherjee . R. K. Nayyar, who had previously worked as assistant director on few films, directed this film. He also created her trademark look, called Sadhana cut, inspired from British actress Audrey Hepburn. The Filmalaya Production banner thus introduced Joy, Sadhana and her iconic hairstyle in their 1960 romantic film Love in Simla. The film was a hit at the box office and was listed in the top 10 films of 1960. Sadhana played the role of a simple, bespectacled girl who is transformed by her grandmother into a beautiful woman and encouraged to pursue the hero. In the film, Sadhana wins a beauty contest and is awarded a three-year film contract with Filmalaya, which was the case in real life too.

During her last days, she had a beautiful relationship with 3 heroines of yesteryear. She had company of Nanda ji, Waheeda Rehman ji and Helen ji. I am a fan of all the 4 above mentioned Divas of Hindi film industry. It is sad that 2 are now gone. And the remaining 2 are old and feeble. When I saw the below posted photograph, I remembered a song of Waheeda ji’s film ” काग़ज़ के फूल ” .

This Is Not Fair Niranjan Bhai ….

img_8024

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 20, 2015           08.00 P.M.

Hi Niranjan Bhai !

What you did is not fair! Yes I am complaining.

It was the night of December 16th. As the clock struck 12.00, date changed and it was beginning of December 17, 2015. It was my birthday. 63rd birthday. From 12.01 AM onwards, I started getting messages of greeting. On 12.10 AM I received a message from your son Gautam Shah. He always wishes me so I thought it was a birthday wish. But it was not. I read and was shocked beyond belief . The message which I got on WhatsApp was :

———————————————————————

At this hour of sudden sad demise of My beloved Father, Mr. Niranjan T Shah , I want to inform you that his Condolence Prayers (Prathna Sabha) is scheduled today on 17th Dec 2015, Thursday, from 3:00pm to 5:00 pm at :

PAWANDHAM
Mahavir Nagar, Opp. B.C.C.I Ground (also known as MCA Ground), Kandivali – West.
Mumbai -400067.

Gautam Shah & Family.

MDRT – USA
RPG Wealth Maximizer.
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

———————————————————————

I was shocked. You called me on Diwali to wish me and my staff. You did tell me about your illness but you also talked about my printing work. I thought that I would you meet you soon. But it was not meant by fate and destiny was scheming some wicked scheme.

Niranjan Bhai, it was a 10 year-old association.

I first met you in 2005 in your Ballard Pier office regarding my acting institute’s brochure. We worked late in the night to complete the work. And it was not one or two days. It was for almost a month. You never complained though you lived in Borivli, far away from Ballard Pier.

Our association grew. You were perfectionist and I like clean and well designed work. I remember, on many occasions even if I said that everything is flawless and you can go for printing, you always said, “no I will give you one more dummy and then we shall proceed for printing.

In 2012, when I contacted you for the new brochure, diction book and other materials for VIDUR ACTING INSTITUTE, you again did my work with perfection. I paid you after almost a year but you never called me even once for the payment. You knew that I was struggling with my finance and wont be able to pay immediately. You cooperated without making me say so.

In December 2014, when I again printed my new brochure, notepad and some other things, the bill was huge. You said without me saying a word that since the amount is big you can pay me in installments.

Niranjan Bhai, I am indebted to you for your cooperation during my struggling days and moreover without making me feel guilty for not being able to pay.

It is not about payments only. In 2012 I wanted to print something in my diction book. You told me that it is bad in taste and I should not do it. You were rather adamant that I desist from doing it. In retrospect I think, you were absolutely right. I feel fortunate that I took your advice.

Niranjan Bhai, like a true friend you stood like a rock in my support.

But I am sad that you left this world on my 63rd birthday. In the morning I cut the cake, which was brought by my students and in the evening I rushed to PAWANDHAM, Mahavir Nagar for your prayer meeting.

I never thought that one day I will only see your portrait and not you in person. But this is life.

I met your son Gautam but could not utter a word. I sat in the rear row and saw your photo. Memories of our first meeting in 2005 came rushing down in torrential form.

What more can I say? I lost a true friend and supporter.

Rest in peace Niranjan Bhai!

We shall surely meet again in our next life.

Good bye till then. Good bye Niranjan Bhai!

Narendra Modi’s Foreign Policy – Japan

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 13, 2015           10.10 P.M.

In the world of obfuscation of national frontiers, in the age of internet and social media reach, no country can remain isolated. It shouldn’t either. Foreign Policy is, thus the most important aspect of modern governance.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath of office, it was widely assumed and believed that due to lack of international exposure, he would rather falter if not fail in Foreign Policy. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprised his friends, critics and enemies alike. Today after almost 18 months, foreign policy initiatives have become his strongest achievement and accomplishment.

In my last blog I wrote about 3 epoch-making initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the realm of foreign policy. He initiated 3 forums to support India’s World View. During the U.N. Climate Change Conference 2015 in Paris [ COP 21 ] , he proposed a new forum of 120 nations named INTERNATIONAL SOLAR ALLIANCE [ I.S.A. ]

Thus the above mentioned 4 new forums bearing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s signature are there in the foreign policy domain and they will remain the biggest hallmark of India in the coming days. India’s 1st big initiative, Non-Aligned Movement [ N.A.M. ] , started by 1st Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru is, for all practical purposes, now dead. No other Prime Minister after that could usher anything worthwhile. So it is right to say that in the realm of Foreign Policy Narendra Modi is the 2nd most successful Prime Minister of India. He is 2nd to Jawahar Lal Nehru only technically. In fact he is 2nd to none.

4 most successful initiatives of Prime Minister Narendra Modi till date :

1 – Forum for India-Pacific Islands cooperation [ F.I.P.I.C. ]

2 – Indian Ocean Outreach Programme [ I.O.O.P. ]

3 – India-Africa Forum Summit [ I.A.F.S. ]

4 – International Solar Alliance [ I.S.A. ]

Foreign Policy successes, apart from multilateral forums,  is also measured in bilateral terms. Prime Minister Narendra Modi scores in this arena also.

Till date Prime Minister Narendra Modi had made 30 foreign trips. He has made 1 visit each to 26 countries. They are : Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brazil, Canada, China, Fiji, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mongolia, Myanmar, Russia, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, South Korea, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, UAE, UK & Uzbekistan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made 2 visits each to : France, Nepal, Singapore & USA.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in following multilateral meetings also. They are : BRICS [ Fortaleza & Ufa ] / G-20 [ Brisbane & Antalya ] / ASEAN [ Naypyidaw & Kuala Lumpur ] / SCO [ Dushambe & Ufa ] / IBSA [ New Delhi ] / INDIA-AFRICA FORUM [ New Delhi ] / SAARC [ Kathmandu ] .

He has developed unique and intimate relationships with almost all the world leaders. Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe is one of them.

Shinzo Abe came to India on a 3 day official visit on December 11, 2015. This visit, apart from clinching of several deals and contracts, will always be remembered for GANGA AARTI in Varanasi.

Vidur’s Film Diary – November 2015

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           NOVEMBER 06 , 2015           12.35 P.M.

[ MILESTONE : Vidur’s Film Diary completed 6th year of its existence in May 2015. June 2015 marks the beginning of its journey in the 7th year. ]

As an ACTING TRAINER my success rate was 40% in the year 2013 – 2014 . It jumps to 55% in 2014 – 2015. This is unprecedented for any ACTING INSTITUTE or ACTING TRAINER. I am continuously writing Vidur’s Film Diary since 6 years. And to my utter surprise I am noticing that there were no lean months in these 6 years. It never happened that a month came and there were no student in any of the 5 fields of entertainment, which my diary covers. There were more than a dozen working students every month.

For the full understanding of my body of work in 2013 – 2014 & 2014 – 2015, please watch the 05 videos posted below :
