MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MARCH 13, 2016           07.50 P.M.

I read MAHABHARATAM in my childhood days. First time I read it in Hindi when I was in 8th standard. At that time I was more interested in story that the philosophy of GITA or teachings of BHISHMA.

I read it again during the summer vacation after I gave High School examination. This time I was able to understand the philosophical part also. Character of BHISHMA PITAMAH fascinated me. A boy , who took vow of celibacy and never broke it, an old warrior , who fought a fierce battle and led it at the age of 124 years , made a fascinating , interesting story. As a human being , he was the only one , who could decide and actually chose date , month and time of his death. It never happened before him. It never happened after him. In fact it wont happen ever again.

During MAHABHARATA war his age was somewhere between 85 to 150 years. Most common belief is that he was 124 years old , when he fought the epic battle. He chose his day and time of his death and then died on the bed of arrows : SHAR AHAIYA .

What a life !! What a personality !!

Last Sermon of BHISHM PITAMAH about RAJ DHARMA

Last Sermon of BHISHMA PITAMAH about RAJ DHARMA

I specially like his last conversation with YUDHISHTHIR , which he delivered when he was on bed of arrows. It was regarding RAJ DHARMA [ Duties & Ethics of a King ] . I like it very much.

But I read MAHABHARAT , published by Geeta Press, Gorakhpur, in Sanskrit with Hindi translation . Suddenly , last night I found 36 edicts of BHISHMA PITAMAH compiled by BHIMAKARMA in his twitter-handle :

I copied the tweets and posting them here for the perusal of my blog readers.

Bheeshma mentions 36 virtues of an ideal king to Yudhishthira.

First Day of Holy Month of Shravan 2013

IMG_7992

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JULY 25 , 2013           00.40 A.M.

While writing this blog on the first day of Shravan of 2013 , I have to make one thing very clear . I am ashamed today that I am unable to write my blogs regularly and more frequently . After I started in March 2009 , only once could I write 31 blogs in a month .  It was in December 2012 . And the lowest was 1 blog in March 2009 . It was the month when I started tentatively , hesitatingly and with lots of doubt .

Today as I write this blog , I remember two other avid bloggers , whom I admire and try to follow . They are ; Shri Lal Krishna Advani and Shri Amitabh Bachchan . Amitabh Bachchan would be completing 71 years in October 2013 . And he writes and posts 1 blog daily . Shri Advani ji would be completing 86 years in November 2013 . And he writes minimum 2 blogs every week . And here I am …….. I would be completing 61 years in December 2013 . I am 10 years junior to Mr. Bachchan and 25 years junior to Shri Advani ji . And still I am not so consistent and regular like them . Sometimes I could write only 3 / 4 blogs in a month . I , instead of admonishing myself , try to convince that I am busy . Could I be busier than Shri Lal Krishna Advani or Mr. Amitabh Bachchan ? No I am not . I sometimes procrastinate . I am definitely busy but not as busy as Shri Advani ji or Mr. Bachchan . Apart from writing blogs , Shri Advani ji wrote a voluminous autobiography also , which was published in March 2008 . Advani ji’s autobiography , My Country , My Life is a 1040 page tome . It became the best seller book in non-fiction category . Till date it sold more than 1,000,000 copies . Incredible ! Unbelievable ! A remarkable feat by a 86 year young national leader and ex Dy. Prime Minister of India .

Apart from Shri Advani ji and Mr. Bachchan , I am a huge fan of Roger Ebert , the American film critic . He was so prolific . How could he managed ? Apart from watching all the released films of the particular week , he wrote reviews , articles , columns , interviews and books , yes books . He wrote everything with gusto and regular alacrity . If he could do it , why can’t I ?

Roger Ebert, american film critic.

I follow Vir Sanghvi too . He writes articles in newspapers . Writes regular weekly columns about politics , food , and good life . He travels a lot and comes and writes travelogues . How is he managing ? Can I have gumption to say that I am more busy than these eminent writers and columnists . No . Its sheer inertia , laziness and procrastination .

Therefore on the first day of holy Shravan , I make a resolution that from now onwards I will be more regular . As least a target of 2 blogs per week or 8 blogs per month is not difficult . It is achievable . Holy Shravan of 2013 will mark a new beginning in my life as a blogger .

AMEN !!!!

I am writing this blog on the 1st day of Shravan and when I will post it , it will be 2nd day of Shravan .

When Even Insult Had Class

DSC01182
MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JULY 17 , 2013           00.15 A.M.
Since past 8 / 9 months , for no fault of mine , I have become target of abuse on various social micro-blogging sites . There are only 2 / 3 people but they do it with religious fervour and with crusader’s zeal .
When you strive to do something worthwhile and chart a different path , insecure and inferior people become jealous . They feel threatened and so they try to belittle you . They attack you with all the squalor at their command . They threaten you with all the venom accumulated since ages . They try to put you down so that they can claim , ” look , he is down and out . He is nothing . He is insignificant .”
These uncouth zombies resort to unparliamentary language and behaviour at slightest pretext . Abuse becomes their most potent weapon . Filth becomes their armour . Cuss words become their shield . And aggression becomes their war strategy .
I have only one weapon to counter such people and their innuendoes . It is silence . And silence is golden . I have remained silent despite gravest provocations . Even my son was attacked and abused recently. If I have to fight someone , I would never ever attack their sons , daughters , parents or relatives . But those , who were not taught or seen decent behaviour in their entire life , can do this with impunity . They can use cuss words . They can use filthy language . They can resort to falsehood to remain relevant . They can spread canards for self-interest . They can gang up with equally despicable cohorts to denigrate you . They can stoop to any level because there is no level .
Suddenly one day I came across this posting of Major Retd. Pravin Singh on the facebook . I knew some of these incidents earlier but I had forgotten them . I am reproducing them with gratitude .
When Even Insult Had Class
***********************************
These glorious insults are from an era before the English language became boiled down to 4-letter words.
A member of Parliament to Disraeli: “Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease.” “That depends, Sir,” said Disraeli, “whether I embrace your policies or your mistress.”
“He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.” – Winston Churchill
I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure.” Clarence Darrow
“He has never been known to use a word that might send a reader to the dictionary.” – William Faulkner (about Ernest Hemingway)
“Thank you for sending me a copy of your book; I’ll waste no time reading it.” – Moses Hadas
I didn’t attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it.” Mark Twain”He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends..” – Oscar Wilde“I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend, if you have one.” – George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill.

“Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second … if there is one.” – Winston Churchill, in response.

“I feel so miserable without you; it’s almost like having you here.” -Stephen Bishop

“I’ve just learned about his illness. Let’s hope it’s nothing trivial.” –Irvin S. Cobb

“He is not only dull himself; he is the cause of dullness in others.” -Samuel Johnson

“He is simply a shiver looking for a spine to run up.” – Paul Keating (MY favorite, MJ)

“In order to avoid being called a flirt, she always yielded easily.” – Charles, Count Talleyrand

“His mother should have thrown him away and kept the stork..” – Mae West

“Some cause happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go.” – Oscar Wilde

“He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts… for support rather than illumination.” – Andrew Lang (1844-1912)

“I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening. But this wasn’t it.” – Groucho

Alas , these days the above mentioned parliamentary taunts and sarcasm is missing in people . An uncouth sycophant , who works as a factotum for his equally uncultured master, when reprimanded by some students for abusing me , said with his abominable toothy grin , ”  I don’t care for age . If someone was born 20/30/40 years before my birth , its none of my fault . “

Yes , it is none of their fault . They were not trained in civilized behaviour either by their family or by their teachers . They are not accustomed to decent behaviour . May be they have never ever respected their elders in their entire life . Yes , they are not cultured by tradition . May be it is in their blood . May be it is in the family . May be it is the trait which they have inherited .

I pity them . I try to ignore them . They should be avoided like Biblical Satan . They should be quarantined in some remote corner of this terra firma . They should be banished from our existence because their knowledge of English is questionable . Their vocabulary is limited . Their upbringing is doubtful . Their decency is untraceable . Their behaviour is crass . And their education is peripheral . They need sympathy and not anger . They should be pardoned because they are yet to evolve as human beings . For them I must quote Jesus Christ . When he was being crucified by Roman soldiers , he famously said , ” Father , forgive them , for they do not know what they do . “

I take care that students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , should learn to respect their elders . They should be cultured and civilized . VIDUR Editing Studio , VIDUR Club and VIDUR Theatre would also like to affirm that uncouth and indecent behaviour is not going to be our trait ever .

For those who are abusive , who are uncouth , who are not civilized enough and who are not so decent , I again quote Jesus Christ , ” Father , forgive them , for they do not know what they do . “

One must remember famous saying of Tomas Eloy Martinez of Argentina – ” Whenever there is a hero , there is a traitor.”

60 Years of Jahangir Art Gallery

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           OCTOBER 20, 2012           7.30 P.M.

17 October 2012 was the day when I wanted to post this blog . On that day iconic Jehangir Art Gallery completed 60 years if its existence . But I was unable to post this blog on that day because I was busy in untangling the latest maze in my professional life . I have almost thwarted the threat coming to me from some upstart , uncouth Acting Trainers of Mumbai .

You can call me Acting Trainer of Mumbai or Acting Tutor of Mumbai , it doesn’t matter much . I , as one of the most successful Acting Coach , am doing this job since 23 years . But sometimes even ants seem to overpower a lion , though temporarily .

That is precisely the reason I missed the historic opportunity . I am delayed by 3 days . Apart from the historical importance of the gallery , I was eager to write this blog because Jehangir Art Gallery was stablished in 1952 , the year of my birth . So we share the same birth year .

The Jehangir Art Gallery is Mumbai’s most famous art gallery and a tourist attraction. It was founded by Sir Cowasji Jehangir at the urging of K. K. Hebbar and Homi Bhabha. It was built in 1952. Managed by the Bombay Art Society, the entire cost of this mansion was donated by Cowasji Jehangir.

This gallery is situated at Kala Ghoda, behind the Prince of Wales Museum, in South Mumbai near the Gateway of India. and has four exhibition halls. The gallery was designed by G.M.Bhuta for G.M. Bhuta & Associates. A mammoth institution in itself, its history is linked with the renaissance of Indian art. The complex also has the popular cafe of Samovar, which is reminiscent of the 70’s socialist culture. It also houses Natesans, the country’s oldest licensed antique dealers. Entry is free.

The art gallery and the Samovar restaurant were featured in the 1975 Bollywood film Choti Si Baat.

The building has been designed by Durga Bajpai and is one of the early concrete structures in the city. The gallery has been turned inwards due to a combined function of an auditorium and an art gallery. Although the concept of an introvert art gallery could be questioned today, the Jehangir is an example of an early modernist notion of the inward looking art galleries in the city. Moreover, the function of the auditorium left no scope for the gallery to be open to the street. The play with concrete can be easily seen with a large wavy cantilevered entrance which embraces the street. The otherwise bland facade is articulated with relief stone cladding.

I first visited the Gallery in 1972 , when I visited the city. Then again I visited it in 1989 , when I came here and settled . Till date I have visited it many times .

The Kala Ghoda precinct is unique in many ways . It has , apart from Jehangir Art Gallery , old Watson Hotel , Prince of Wales Museum and J. J. School of Arts . Rhythm House , the well – known music store , is also situated here . Max Muller Bhawan , the cultural centre of Germany , is also here . Iconic Taj Mahal Hotel and Gateway of India are not very far off . A mere walk in the lanes of Kala Ghoda precinct can send you into the memory lane of history . It can invigorate you , charge you to no end .

I have done it many times . I beseech you to do this once . Go there , have a lazy stroll and feel the essence of old Bombay .

100th Anniversary of Titanic Disaster

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           AUGUST 10, 2012           00.40 A.M.

This year seems to be the year of anniversaries . Apart from some happy , epoch  – making and historical events , 2012 also marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic . This luxury liner collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic ocean and sank on April 15 , 1912 , while making its maiden voyage . It does not feel nice to remember or write about a disaster of this magnitude where 1502 people died . But I loved the film ” Titanic ” [ 1997 ] and later on , when I searched and researched on the topic , I was intrigued by the story of this ill – fated luxury liner .

Titanic is a 1997 American epic romantic disaster film directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron . A fictionalized account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic , it stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as members of different social classes who fall in love aboard the ship during its ill-fated maiden voyage.

Production on the film began in 1995 , when Cameron shot footage of the actual Titanic wreck . The modern scenes were shot on board the Akademik Mstislav Keldysh , which Cameron had used as a base when filming the wreck . A reconstruction of the Titanic was built at Playas de Rosarito , Baja California , and scale models and computer-generated imagery were also used to recreate the sinking . The film was partially funded by Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox , and , at the time , was the most expensive film ever made , with an estimated budget of $200 million .

Upon its release on December 19, 1997, the film achieved critical and commercial success . Nominated for fourteen Academy Awards , it won eleven , including the awards for Best Picture and Best Director , tying Ben Hur (1959) for most Oscars won by a single film . With a worldwide gross of over $2 billion , it was the first film to reach the billion-dollar mark , remaining the highest-grossing film of all time for twelve years , until Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar surpassed its gross in 2010 . A 3D version of the film was re-released in theaters (often billed as Titanic 3D) on April 4, 2012 , to commemorate the centenary of the sinking of the ship.

As I stated above , I watched the film and was very much fascinated by its story . I further studied about it and this topic became a part of me . I also fancied visiting the original site of Titanic shipwreck one day .

RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton , UK to New York City , US . The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of 1,502 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history . The RMS Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time of her maiden voyage . She was the second of three Olympic class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line , and she was built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast . On her maiden voyage, she carried 2,224 passengers and crew.

Captained by Edward Smith, her passengers included some of the wealthiest people in the world, as well as hundreds of emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland , Scandinavia and elsewhere throughout Europe seeking a new life in North America. The ship was designed to be the last word in comfort and luxury .

It was a tragic event , a disaster which is still unparalleled in the history of modern times . Film ” Titanic ” [ 1997 ] re – created and re – lived the memory of that disaster and made this tragic story immortal in the mind of  the viewers .

This year in April , when the world remembered sinking of Titanic , I immediately wanted to write about it but due to extremely busy schedule and other pressing preoccupations , I was unable to complete it . So I am completing it today and posting it .

A Visitor From GUERNSEY

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JUNE 09 , 2012           01.00 A.M.

Almost a year back , I added a link of Flag Counter on my blog space . It helps me to know the names of the countries of the visitors of my blog . As soon as a visitor hits my blog , flag of his country appears on my flag counter .

On June 07 , 2012 , when I saw a new flag on the flag counter , I opened the link and got a shock of my life . The new visiting country’s name appeared as GUERNSEY. I rubbed my eyes , pinched my palm and then got assured that the name of the new visiting country is definitely GUERNSEY .

Flag Counter

Quantcast

Free counters!

Till this date , as I am posting this blog , 116 countries have visited my blog space . GUERNSEY is the 115th country . Frankly speaking , I have not even heard the name of this country . I immediately clicked on the flag counter and got some knowledge about the country . Today I googled GUERNSEY and became more familiar with the country . A tiny island , GUERNSEY is situated 30 miles from the west coast of France and 75 miles south of England . GUERNSEY is a British Crown Dependency . She has a population of 65068 only . Her capital is Saint Peter Port and she has total area of  78 km..

Let us try to know something more about GUERNSEY .

[ Excerpts from Wikipedia ]

Guernsey (play /ˈɡɜrnzi/ GURN-zee), officially the Bailiwick of Guernsey (French: Bailliage de Guernesey, IPA: [bajaʒ də ɡɛʁnəzɛ]), is a British Crown dependency in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey embraces not only all 10 parishes on the Island of Guernsey, but also the islands of Herm, Jethou, and Lihou. Furthermore, the Bailiwick includes Alderney and Sark, which each has its own parliament.

Although its defence is the responsibility of the United Kingdom, the Bailiwick of Guernsey is not part of the UK; and while it participates in the Common Travel Area, it is not part of the European Union.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey is included (along with the Bailiwick of Jersey) in the grouping known as the Channel Islands.

During World War I approximately 3,000 island men served in the British Expeditionary Force. Of these, about 1,000 served in the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry regiment which was formed from the Royal Guernsey Militia in 1916.

The Bailiwick of Guernsey was occupied by German troops in World War II. Before the occupation, many Guernsey children were evacuated to England to live with relatives or strangers during the war. Some children were never reunited with their families.

Several European countries have consulate presence in the island. The French Consulate is based at Victor Hugo‘s former residence at Hauteville House. The German Honorary Consulate is based at local design and advertising agency Betley Whitehorne.

While Guernsey has complete autonomy over internal affairs and certain external matters, the topic of complete independence from the British Crown has been discussed widely and frequently, with ideas ranging from Guernsey obtaining independence as a Dominion to the bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey uniting and forming an independent Federal State within the Commonwealth, whereby both islands retain their independence with regards to domestic affairs but internationally, the islands would be regarded as one state.

English is the language in general use by the majority of the population, while Guernésiais, the Norman language of the island, is spoken fluently by only about 2% of the population (according to 2001 census). However, 14% of the population claim some understanding of the language.  Georges Métivier, considered by some to be the island’s national poet, wrote in Guernesiais. The loss of the island’s language and the Anglicisation of its culture, which began in the nineteenth century and proceeded inexorably for a century, accelerated sharply when the majority of the island’s school children were evacuated to the UK for five years during the German occupation of 1940–1945.

Georges Métivier

[ Georges Métivier, considered by some to be the island’s national poet. ]

Victor Hugo wrote some of his best-known works while in exile in Guernsey, including Les Misérables. His home in St. Peter Port, Hauteville House, is now a museum administered by the city of Paris. In 1866, he published a novel set in the island, Travailleurs de la Mer (Toilers of the Sea), which he dedicated to the island of Guernsey.

I never knew above mentioned facts , which I have taken from Wikipedia . I am a student of history and always take pride in the fact that my general knowledge is very good . Still I have not heard about GUERNSEY . I was even oblivious of her existence .

So , when an anonymous visitor from GUERNSEY visited my blog space , I was elated . I was simply ecstatic . I don’t think I will get an opportunity to visit this beautiful island nation . But who know ? May be some day I will land there . May be some day I will get a chance to pay obeisance to the house , where Victor Hugo stayed and wrote some of his famous novels .

WHO KNOWS ! !
