MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           May 08 , 2016           11.00 P.M.

[ MILESTONE : With this post, Vidur’s Film Diary completes 7th year of its existence in May 2016. June 2016 will mark the beginning of its journey in the 8th year. ]

Satyameva Jayate

 सत्यमेव जयते

In the era of falsehood, Vidur Acting Institute has chosen the tortuous path of truthfulness. In the season of deceit, Vidur Acting Institute has taken the pledge of being factually correct. You can go through the below mentioned facts of my success story and can check and verify them. But do check the tall claims of so many other so-called “Best Acting Institutes of Mumbai” or “Best Acting Institutes of India”. Grill the so-called “Best Acting Trainers of Mumbai” or “Best Acting Trainers of India” and you will see through their hollow claims.

सत्यमेव जयते नानृतम् ,
सत्येन पन्था विततो देवयानः ।
येनाक्रमन्त्यृषयो ह्याप्तकामा ,
यत्र तत् सत्यस्य परमं निधानम् ॥

……………….. मुण्डक उपनिषद्

English Translation

Truth alone triumphs ; not falsehood.
Through truth the divine path is spread out ,
by which the sages , whose desires have been completely fulfilled, reach where that supreme treasure of Truth resides.

…………………………………… Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad

As an ACTING TRAINER my success rate was 40% in the year 2013 – 2014 . It jumped to 55% in 2014 – 2015. And in 2015 , it zoomed up to 62.35 % . This is unprecedented for any ACTING INSTITUTE or ACTING TRAINER across the world. I am continuously writing Vidur’s Film Diary since 7 years. And to my utter surprise I have noticed that there were no lean months ever. It never happened that a month came and there were none of my students in any of the 5 fields of entertainment, which my diary covers. In fact there were more than a dozen working students every month.

My 25-Year-Long Journey : From Kareena Kapoor to Alia Bhatt

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           AUGUST 08, 2014           08.50 P.M.

My fascination with Hindi film heroines started in mid 60s. In the dark environs of Amar Jyoti Talkies, Deoria, my rendezvous with Hindi cinema took place with Rajendra Kumar and B. Saroja Devi starrer Silver Jubilee hit  ” Sasural ” [ 1961 ] . B. Saroja Devi, though not well-known to Hindi cine-goers, was almost alien to me. But after watching the film, I was unable to forget her. Her elegant persona, her well-kept figure, her chiselled face enticed me for weeks and months. She was the first icon of my childhood fancy.

Few years later in 1967, after appearing in High School exams, I watched Dilip Kumar and  Vyjayanthimala, starrer golden jubilee film ” Ganga Jumna “. B. Saroja Devi and  Vyjayanthimala, to my utter surprise, looked almost similar. I was hooked to Vyjayanthimala and my fascination for the film heroines got fortified.

After passing High School, I went to Allahabad for further studies. My true rendezvous with Hindi cinema started in all earnest in Allahabad. I started watching films regularly. I got acquainted with the heroines of early Hindi cinema. I was particularly enamoured by Devika Rani and Kanan Devi. [ Who can forget Devika Rani’s ………. MAIN BAN KI CHIDIA BAN KE BAN-BAN DOLOON RE ……….( ” Achhut Kanya ” – 1936 ) and Kanan Devi’s ………….. YE DUNIYA ,YE DUNIYA TOOFAN MAIL ……… ( Jawaab ” – 1942 ) ? Few years later I watched two earlier films of Kanan Devi; P. C. Barua starrer ” Mukti ” [ 1937 ] and K. L. Sehgal starrer ” Street Singer ” [ 1938 ]. Though they were the heroines of my father’s generation but their etherial beauty, their sweet voice enthralled me and fascinated me during my adolescent and growing up years in Allahabad.

Later on I got acquainted with the works of other highly successful actresses of the bygone era. The list included Nargis, Suraiya, Nalini Jayawant,  Meena Kumari, Madhubala, Nimmi and Geeta Bali. These heroines ruled the golden era of Hindi films. But even they belonged to the earlier era.

My era included highly successful and enchanting heroines like;  Nutan, Vyjayanthimala, Waheeda Rehman , Nanda and Mala Sinha .

I became a die-hard fan of Waheeda Rehman after watching her films Pyaasa (1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) . After watching Raj Kapoor‘s Awaara (1951) and of Mehboob Khan‘s Mother India (1957), Nargis, also became one of my all time favourites. Vijay Bhatt‘s Baiju Bawra (1952), made me a fan of  Meena Kumari.  K. Asif‘s Mughal-e-Azam (1960) made Madhubala my eternal favourite.

Then times changed. My journey with cinema matured. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, actresses like Sadhna, Saira Banu, Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz and Asha Parekh ruled the Hindi film world.

In the early 70s  Amitabh Bachchan, era started in the Hindi film industry. Actresses from this era included Hema Malini, Jaya BachchanRekha,  Zeenat Aman and Dimple Kapadia. I adored these heroines but frankly, I was neither enchanted or enamoured by them. Mysterious quality of the earlier heroines was missing. Or may be I became mature and the mystique slowly evaporated.

In 1975, I completed my studies in Allahabad and returned to my native place, Deoria. A 14-year-long second phase of my life started in Deoria.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the pendulum swung back towards family centric romantic musicals with the success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) . Incidentally this was the last film, which I watched in Deoria.

I moved to Bombay [ now Mumbai ] in 1989. This was the year when Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) got released and changed the film-watching experience forever.

Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Dil (1990), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), making stars out of a new generation and actresses such as Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla and Kajol . In that point of time actresses such as Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Aishwarya Rai also arrived on the scene.  Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor too appearing in popular comedy films .

Furthermore, this decade marked the entry of new performers in art house and independent films like Satya (1998), directed by Ram Gopal Varma and written by Anurag Kashyap. Manisha Koirala, Tabu and Urmila Matondkar were the heroines of this generation.

So it was a long association with the silver screen heroines. From Kanan Devi to Kajol and Karisma Kapoor , I watched everyone, got fascinated by them and silently admired their etherial beauty. But never in my wildest dream did I imagine that one day I would train few of the present day ruling Divas of Hindi cinema. After 25 year stay in Mumbai, when I look back, I reminisce my by-gone days with astonishment. I am bewildered with my accomplishment.

In 1994 two heroines trained by me made their debut in Hindi films. They are Sonali Bendre in ” Aag ” [ 1994 ] and Divya Dutta in ” Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna ” [ 1994 ] . It uncanny that 1994 was the year when Devika Rani died. Kanan Devi bid us adieu two years earlier in 1992.

My childhood icons left this world in 1994 and present day icons, trained by me , made their entry in 1994. It is strange. It is quirky. It is really uncanny. After debut of Sonali Bendre and Divya Dutta in 1994, flood-gate of the newcomers got opened and it has now submerged the Hindi film industry. I present a list of some of the epoch-making new era Hindi film Divas, who got trained by me :

Kareena Kapoor : ” Refugee ” [ 2000 ] = DEBUT

Priyanka Chopra : ” The Hero ” [ 2002 ] = DEBUT

SONAM KAPOOR : ” Saawariya ” [ 2007 ] = DEBUT

Anushka Sharma : ” Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi ” [ 2008 ] = DEBUT

Katrina Kaif :  ” Raajneeti ” [ 2010]

ALIA BHATT : ” Student Of The Year ” [ 2012 ] = DEBUT

KALKI KOECHLIN : ” Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani ” [ 2013 ]

URVASHI RAUTELA : ” Singh Saab The Great ” [ 2013 ] = DEBUT

In the end I would like to submit that the above mentioned list is almost endless. I have mentioned very famous names only. As I watch Alia Bhatt making rapid strides, and other newcomers trained by me making their entry in the tinsel town, my heart beats fast with pride.

Some of the biggest star sons / daughters are currently being trained by me and they are going to make their debut in 2015.

So the SAGA CONTINUES !! Dust settles down. Sun shines brilliantly. And the World { excluding few egoistic nay-sayers } watches with awe, admiration and amazement.

Rituparno Ghosh ; Gone Too Soon

img_8024

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JUNE 06 , 2013           08.30 P.M.

Rituparno Ghosh

31 August 1963 – 30 May 2013

English: Rituparno at MAMI festival

I was shocked beyond words to hear about the sad demise of Rituparno Ghosh . He was my favourite director of Bengali cinema post Satyajit Ray era . He died on 30 May 2013 in Kolkata after suffering a massive heart attack . He was 49 years old at the time of his death .

He started his career as a creative artist in advertisement agency. In 1992, his debut filmHirer Angti got released. In 1994 his next film Unishe April  “ released and it won National Film Award for Best Feature Film . In his career spanning almost two decades he won 12 national and some international awards .

The first film of Rituparno Ghosh , which I saw , wasBariwali ” [ 1999 ] . It moved me immensely . Kirron Kher’s poignant portrayal of a lonely housewife , who rents her old house for shooting and as shooting progressed , she falls for the director of the film and finally her fancy comes crashing when the cast and crew of the film leaves her house after last day of the shooting . She was devastated that the directors has no feelings for her . ” Bariwali ” is still fresh in my memory and it is etched permanently in my mind . It’s not for nothing that Kirron Kher got National Award for her performance .

This was my first brush with the world of Rituparno Ghosh .

The I watched Chokher Bali ” [ 2003 ] . During my adolescent years in Deoria , I had read the Hindi translation of the novel . It was named ” Aankh Ki Kirkiri ” . Character of female protagonist in the novel was very difficult . Ritu da , as he was fondly called , not only filmed the story beautifully , but he also extracted remarkable performance from Aishwarya Rai Bachchan .

Then I watched ” The Last Lear ” [ 2007 ] . It was very unusual film by typical bollywood standard . A remarkable performance by Amitabh Bachchan made this film important .

Out of all 24 films , which he made as a director or writer or producer , I have watched only 3 films . But even then Ritu da’s impact fails to get obfuscated from my psyche .

Here is the complete list of his films .

Filmography

” Hirer Angti ” [ 1992 ] , ” Unishe April ” [ 1994 ] , ” Dahan ” [ 1997 ] , ” Bariwali ” [ 1999 ] , ” Asukh ” [ 1999 ] , ” Utsab ” [ 2000 ] , ” Titli ” [ 2002 ] , ” Shubho Mahurat ”  [ 2003 ] , ” Chokher Bali ” [ 2003 ] , ” Katha Deithili Ma ” [ 2003 ] , ” Raincoat ” [ 2004 ] , ” Antarmahal ” [ 2005 ] , ” Dosar ” [ 2006 ] , ” The Last Lear ” [ 2007 ] , ” Khela ” [ 2008 ] , ” Shob Charitro Kalponik ” [ 2008 ] , ” Abohoman ” [ 2010 ] , ” Noukadubi ” [ 2010 ] , ” Arekti Premer Golpo ” [ 2011 ] , ” Memories In March ” [ 2011 ] , ” Sunglass ” [ 2012 ] , ” Chitrangada ” [ 2012 ] , ” Jiban Smriti ” [ 2012 ] & ” Satyanveshi  ” [ 2013 ]

200 Years of ” Pride And Prejudice “

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           FEBRUARY 10 , 2013           11.40 P.M.

Few days back I read news that iconic and timeless classic ” Pride and Prejudice ” , a novel written by Jane Austen , has completed 200 years of its journey . Immediately my mind went into flashback . The year was 1972 and the place was English department of Allahabad University . I had taken admission in the English department for my post graduation in English Literature and thus got introduced to the world of Jane Austen as this novel ” Pride and Prejudice ” was in my course .

I frankly admit that at that time I was unable to understand the novel completely . I was not able to comprehend the intricacies of 19th century England and thus was unable to appreciate the novel . But I was aware of its iconic status and was told by my professors that it is a timeless classic . I decided to read it again in future but was unable to fulfill my resolution due to lack of time . And now in 2013 , when I am engulfed in the activities of my acting institute , ” Pride and Prejudice ” has silently completed 200 years of its existence .

Pride and Prejudice is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London.

Though the story is set at the turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of ‘most loved books’ such as The Big Read. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen’s memorable characters or themes. To date, the book has sold some 20 million copies worldwide.

As Anna Quindlen wrote, “Pride and Prejudice is also about that thing that all great novels consider, the search for self. And it is the first great novel to teach us that search is as surely undertaken in the drawing-room making small talk as in the pursuit of a great white whale or the public punishment of adultery.”

Pride and Prejudice has engendered numerous adaptations. Some of the notable film versions include that of 1940 starring Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier, (based in part on Helen Jerome’s 1936 stage adaptation) and that of 2005 starring Keira Knightley (in an Oscar-nominated performance) and Matthew Macfadyen.Notable television versions include two by the BBC: the popular 1995 version starring Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, and a 1980 version starring Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul. A 1936 stage version was created by Helen Jerome played at the St. James’s Theatre in London, starring Celia Johnson and Hugh Williams. First Impressions was a 1959 Broadway musical version starring Polly Bergen, Farley Granger, and Hermione Gingold. In 1995, a musical concept album was written by Bernard J. Taylor, with Peter Karrie in the role of Mr Darcy and Claire Moore in the role of Elizabeth Bennet. A new stage production, Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, The New Musical, was presented in concert on 21 October 2008 in Rochester, New York, with Colin Donnell as Darcy.

Bride and Prejudice, a movie by Gurinder Chadha, starring Aishwarya Rai, is a Bollywood adaptation of the novel; while Pride & Prejudice: A Latter-Day Comedy (2003), starring Kam Heskin and Orlando Seale, places the novel at a Mormon university in modern times. The Off-Broadway musical I Love You Because reverses the gender of the main roles, set in modern-day New York City. The Japanese comic Hana Yori Dango by Yoko Kamio, in which the wealthy, arrogant and proud protagonist, Doumyouji Tsukasa, falls in love with a poor, lower-class girl named Makino Tsukushi, is loosely based on Pride and Prejudice. A 2008 Israeli television six-part miniseries set the story in the Galilee with Mr Darcy a well-paid worker in the high-tech industry.

Pride and Prejudice has also crossed into the science fiction and horror genres. In the 1997 episode of science fiction comedy Red Dwarf entitled “Beyond a Joke“, the crew of the space ship relax in a virtual reality rendition of “Pride and Prejudice Land” in “Jane Austen World”. The central premise of the television miniseries Lost in Austen is a modern woman suddenly swapping lives with that of Elizabeth Bennet. In February 2009, it was announced that Elton John‘s Rocket Pictures production company was making a film, Pride and Predator, based on the story, but with the added twist of an alien landing in Longbourn. Also in production is the movie Pride and Prejudice and Zombies based on the book of the same name written by Seth Grahame-Smith, where the village of Longbourn is terrorized by zombies.

The book has also been adapted for modern times in The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, a mixed media web show created by Hank Green and Bernie Su. The video blog follows Lizzie Bennet, a graduate student in mass communications, and includes companion video blogs, Twitter accounts, and tumblrs for many of the other characters.

This summer, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the publication of the novel in 1813, Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in London will be performing Simon Reade’s stage adaptation. The production will be directed by Deborah Bruce.

It is amazing that this novel’s popularity refuses to ebb . And it is sad that I am yet to redeem my pledge to read and appreciate this immortal and timeless classic called ” Pride and Prejudice ” . On the 200 anniversary , I am again promising myself to read this novel soon . Though my time is consumed by my acting academy Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , but still I intend to read the novel soon .

[ Some facts and data about ” Pride and Prejudice ” has been taken from Wikipedia . I am indebted . ]

On this Sunday evening , while going through bunch of news papers , which I subscribe , I found an interesting write-up in Bombay Times of Times Of India . It was about ” TIMES CELEBEX ” . This is first ever ranking index of Hindi film stars . Since it is done by Times of India and is powered by Zoom , it has to be quite authentic .

In Hindi film industry , or in any film industry of the world in general , fortunes change every Friday , when the new films hit the screen in theatres . So fixing the rating and ranking is not an easy task . But since it is done by Times of India and as per their claim it is ” most definitive and scientific ranking system ……….. robust ranking system based on data collected from 200+ publications and 250+ TV channels ……………” , one has to believe and take note of this list .

Anushka Sharma , who stands at 9th position , is also my student . But as I have stated earlier she refuses to acknowledge that she was trained by me , so I don’t think it would be ethical to take any credit .

It is heartening for an Acting Trainer that his 7 students are present in the list of 20 high-ranking stars . It comes to 1/3 share . Barring Mr. Roshan Taneja no other Acting Trainer of Mumbai can claim to have this kind of illustrious list . Any Acting Trainer of India would give his right or left arm to get such successful students .

I congratulate all the 7 students on behalf of me and my Acting Institute Vidur’s Kreating Charakters . Vidur’s Kreating Charakters family is proud of their achievement  .

May they grow in stature and may their success and fame be everlasting !

Raj Kanwar : A Journey From ” Deewana ” to ” Sadiyaan “

Mr. Raj Kanwar

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           FEBRUARY 05 , 2012           11.15 P.M.

Death is always painful . It is more painful if a young life is lost . I was shocked when I heard about the sad demise of Mr. Raj Kanwar . He died on February 03 , 2012 at the age of  51 in Singapore . He was suffering from kidney ailment from the past year . It is uncanny that his elder brother Mr. K. Pappu also died of kidney ailment  and that too almost at the same age .

He started his film journey as an assistant to Shekhar Kapur and Raj Kumar Santoshi . He started as independent director with ” Deewana ” [1992 ] , a Rishi Kapoor , Shah Rukh Khan and Divya Bharti starrer . This film is Shah Rukh Khan’s first and major hit in Hindi film industry .

After stupendous success of ” Deewana “ [ 1992 ] , he made another blockbuster ” Laadla ” [ 1994 ] . And then followed ” Kartavya ” [ 1995 ] .

After 3 hits in a row , he made ” Jaan ” [ 1996 ] and ” Jeet ” [ 1996 ] . Both the films were released in 1996 .

Next year , he returned with 2 films ;  ” Judaai ” [ 1997 ] and ” Itihaas ” [ 1997 ] .

” Itihaas “ was followed by ” Daag : The Fire ” [ 1999 ] and ” Badal ” [ 2000 ] .

2000 was the only year in the entire career of Mr. Raj Kanwar , when he made 3 films . Apart from ” Badal “ , he made Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega ” [ 2000 ] andDhaai Akshar Prem Ke ” [ 2000 ] .

” Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke “ shall always be remembered by the connoisseurs of Hindi films because it brought Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai together on the screen for the first time . After this film , he came with ” Farz ” [ 2001 ] .

After ” Farz “ , he returned withAb Ke Baras ” [ 2002 ] . Unfortunately this film bombed at the box office . In this film he introduced Aarya Babbar and Amrita Rao . Incidentally , Aarya babbar is my student .

Ab Ke Baras

Image via Wikipedia

After ” Ab Ke Baras “ , he came with ” Andaaz ” [ 2003 ] , one of the biggest hits of his career . He introduced Priyanka Chopra  and Lara Datta in this film . And again incidentally Priyanka Chopra is my student .

After 3 years hiatus , he returned with ” Humko Deewana Kar gaye ” [ 2006 ] .

Then again he returned after a gap of  4 years with ” Sadiyaan ” [ 2010 ] . It is sad that his last film bombed badly . Despite all the brickbats it got , it will always be close to my heart because it introduced 2 of my students ; Luv Sinha and Ferena Wazeir .

In total he made 16 films in a career spanning 20 years . He gave break to many new comers . Among his discoveries 4 are my students . They are ; Priyanka Chopra , Aarya Babbar , Luv Sinha and Ferena Wazeir .

During the making of ” Sadiyaan “ , I met him in his office . He wanted to know about Ferena’s progress and I went to meet him along with Ferena . I still remember the evening I spent with him .

Then again I met him at the music launch of  ” Sadiyaan “ at The Club . I never knew that it was my last meeting with him .

At The Music Launch of Sadiyaan

Rest In Peace Sir ! You will be missed .
