Maharashtra Local Body Elections 2017 : Saffron Tsunami

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           FEBRUARY 26, 2017           11.35 P.M.

Five years back in 2012, almost at the same time and also in the month of February, I wrote a blog about Saffron Juggernaut in Maharashtra municipal elections for 10 Municipal Corporations. B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] was victorious even then. But they won the elections in alliance with Shiv Sena.

This time again elections were declared for the same 10 Municipal Corporations. And I am writing about Saffron Tsunami.

2017-municipal-council-polls

But this time 25-year-old alliance with Shiv Sena broke and B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] went alone to test the waters. It happened because of hubris of Shiv Sena. B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] won May 2014 Lok Sabha elections and formed government in Delhi. Then in assembly elections in Maharashtra, both the parties went their separate ways. B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] wanted to fight half the seats i.e. 144. But Shiv Sena was not willing. Unable to accept new ground realities and unwilling to acknowledge resurgence of B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ], they were insisting on the old formula of Bala Saheb Thackeray and Pramod Mahajan days 171 : 117. [ 171 for Shiv Sena & 117 for B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] or a later day formula; 169 : 119 [ 169 for Shiv Sena & 119 for B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ].

B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] and Shiv Sena went their separate ways. Gamble paid off as B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] won 122 sears out of 288, only 23 short of majority mark. It increased its number of seats from 46 to 122. Shiv Sena won only 63 seats. But it also increased its tally. From 44 to 63, it got 19 more seats.

Not willing to accept any lessons from assembly elections 2014 drubbing, Shiv Sena was willing to give only 60 seats to B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] in B.M.C. [ Bruhan Mumbai Municipal Corporation ]. It was in fact 3 short of their previous tally. naturally B.J.P. refused and both the parties went their separate ways.

And as they say REST IS HISTORY.

B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] won 82 seats, 51 more from 31 seats won by it in 2012. Shiv Sena could win 84 seats, only 9 more than its 1012 tally of 75.

2017-mumbai-municipal-corporation

Apart from stunning, almost 3 fold increase in B.M.C. [ Bruhan Mumbai Municipal Corporation ] , B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] won 8 other Municipal Corporations. It snatched Pune & Pimpri-Chinchwad from N.C.P. [ Nationalist Congress Party ].

PUNE : 2017 –  98 //  2012 – 26 [ +72 ]

PIMPRI-CHINCHWAD : 2017 – 78 // 2012 – 3 [ + 75 ]

B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] also won Nashik, where N.C.P. was the ruling dispensation along with M.N.S. [ Maharashtra Navanirman Sena ]

NASHIK : 2017 – 67 // 2012 – 14 [ + 53 ]

B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] gave bloody nose to I.N.C. [ Indian National Congress ] in Amaravati & Solapur, where it was the ruling party along with N.C.P. [ Nationalist Congress Party ].

AMARAVATI : 2017 – 45 // 2012 – 7 [ + 38 ]

SOLAPUR : 2017 – 47 // 2012 – 25 [ + 22 ]

In fact B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] got solo control of 2 Municipal Corporations; Akola & Ulhasnagar, which it previously ruled along with Shiv Sena.

AKOLA : 2017 – 48 // 2012 – 18 [ + 30 ]

ULHASNAGAR : 2017 – 32 // 2012 – 11 [ + 21 ]

B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] retained Nagpur with huge gains. It won 108 seat, 46 more seats than its previous tally of 62.

NAGPUR : 2017 – 108 // 2012 – 62 [ + 46 ]

2017-nagpur-municipal-corporation

Now the case of the 10th Municipal Corporation of Thane. Shiv Sena was successful to retain the Corporation. B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] failed to win. But it improved its tally. It won 23 seats, 15 more than the previous tally of 8.

All the above mentioned results show stunning and staggering growth of B.J.P. [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] in Maharashtra after Narendra Modi and Amit Shah era started in India and after Devendra Fadnavis era started in Maharashtra. Maharashtra B.J.P. president Rao Saheb Danve & Mumbai president Ashish Shelar also contributed immensely in this growth.

Sainthood in Death? – A Kashmiri Pandit remembers Mufti Mohammad Sayeed

img_8024

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JANUARY 10, 2016           07.45 P.M.

Two time Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir and first Muslim Home Minister of India, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died on January 07, 2016 in New Delhi of multiple organ failure. He was 79 years old at the time of his death. He was buried in his native village Bijbehara of Anantnaag district.

With due respect to the departed soul, his political journey could be termed as colourful and sheer opportunistic. From Congress to Jan Morcha, and then again to the Congress, it was without any stated principles. Finally he, along with his daughter Mehbooba Mufti, formed PDP and remained there till his death.

His two terms as Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir could also be termed as maverick and opportunistic.

2002 = Though he had resigned from the Indian National Congress but without any qualm took their support to become Chief Minister. He had only 16 MLAs in the house of 87.

2008 = His PDP won 21 seats. But this time he prefered to sit in the opposition. It again defies logic. With 16 MLAs, he chose to become Chief Minister. But with 21 MLAs, he prefered to sit in the opposition.

2014 = He formed an alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party and became Chief Minister for the second time.  This time he had 28 MLAs, up 7 from the 21 last election.

From Congress to BJP, many people can frown but for him it was a smooth journey.

Here is the list of the milestones of his political journey.

Indian National Congress = 1972 to 1987

Jan Morcha = 1987 to 1990

Indian National Congress = 1990 to 1999

People’s Democratic Party = 1999 to 2016

Leader Congress Legislative Party = 1975

Union Minister of Tourism = 1986

Home Minister of India = Dec. 1989 – Nov. 1990

Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir = Nov. 2002 – Nov. 2005

Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir = March 2015 – Jan. 2016

It is in our culture to give respect to the departed soul. One is not supposed to be disparaging about the person after the he is gone. But in my opinion history is supposed to be unbiased. History should be loyal to the truth only. History is and should be cruel.

Therefore I thought to reproduce an article written by Anupama Handoo , a Kashmiri Pandit, which presents a totally different picture of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. —————————————————————————————————-

On 7 January 2016, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed took his last breath. News feeds since then are full of eulogies for the supposed saint, nationalist and statesman.

Every paean takes me back to that fateful month of December in 1989 when Mufti’s youngest daughter Rubaiya Sayeed was kidnapped by (Yasin Malik’s) Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front. The nation was held to ransom for the daughter of the Union Home Minister who had taken oath just a few days ago. Bypassing the elected state government led by Farooq Abdullah, Mufti misused his power and influence to engineer the release of five dreaded terrorists. Local population in the valley and friends were confident that Rubaiya was at home or at least in a safe house where she was safe and well taken care of, all the time. This drama of hostage rescue is the watershed event in Kashmir terrorism. Encouraged by weakness of the state and central administration, terrorism took hold in the valley. General population started to believe that ‘Azadi from India’ and ‘Pakistan with Pandit women and without the men’ is just around the corner. December 1989 and January 1990 was when lakhs of Kashmiri Hindus had to leave their homes to become refugees in their own country. For me and lakhs of Kashmiri Hindus that was the last time we saw home and for that we have Mufti to thank for.

1989 was not the first time when the ugly head of communal militancy reared its head in Kashmir Valley. Political experts maintain that Mufti orchestrated the infamous 1986 Anantnaag riots in which hysterical Muslim mobs took out violent processions, desecrated and destroyed more than 40 temples, and killed and looted the helpless Hindu population. In Mufti’s constituency Brijbehara alone, two temples were looted, ancient idols stolen and broken. Kashmiri Hindus should have anticipated what was to come.

One word that comes closest to describing Kashmiri politicians in general and Mufti Mohammed Sayeed in particular, is chameleon. No, it’s not a kind word. I don’t intend to be kind – the pain is still raw. I call him a chameleon because he switched loyalties like clothes, seizing opportunities to promote himself and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti. With subsequent stints in Democratic National Conference, Congress, and Jan Morcha and later on by launching his own People’s Democratic Party he bargained for more power and more influence with each stepping stone.

He first became Chief Minister in 2002, backed by Congress on a meagre strength of 16 in an 87 member strong State Assembly. In 2008 elections, he chose to stay in the opposition even with 21 seats and in 2015 he chose to form alliance with BJP on a strength of 28. Ambition is not a bad thing, manipulating masses for one’s own end is objectionable. While in opposition he engineered coups; in 1977, twice in 1986, in 1990 and in 2008; ushering the Governors’ rule every time. This marginalised the democratically elected parties and sowed seeds of discord in the electorate. He founded the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999 for which he used the electoral symbol of ‘green flag and pen-inkpot’ of the Muslim United Front (MUF) the Jamaat-e-Islami-led conglomerate of anti-India parties.

He kept everyone happy … happily in the dark. To the central government he played the role of a ‘Nationalist’ who was trying to bring ‘healing touch’ to the battered communities through peace and dignity. But the modus operandi of this healing touch was far from nationalist. He was a firm believer in Kashmiris’ right to ‘self-rule’. Ceasefire on the Pakistan border, disbanding of instruments like Special Task Force and Special Operation Group of Police, scrapping of The Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002 (POTA) and release of political prisoners was all part of his arsenal. He facilitated bringing the separatists leaders (read Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front) to a tripartite political dialogue with India and Pakistan. He recommended free trade and travel between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad in Pakistan Occupied J&K. His latest preposterous proposal was that the people of Kashmir should be allowed to transact their business in the Indian as well as the Pakistani currency. Looking at these steps in totality – these were ploys to weaken the State influence in Law and Order issues and dilute the army control on borders. Making borders with Pakistan porous, Mufti’s strategy was to pave the way for uninterrupted smuggling of currency, arms and drugs as well as infiltration of terrorists.

Kind obituaries are flooding in about the greatness of the man now dead. People are calling him a statesman and a visionary. He surrounded himself with wise people and those wise people (often Kashmiri Pandits) must undoubtedly believe in his secular and nationalist credentials. As a common person who never broke bread with him, I am entitled to judge his greatness by his impact and legacy. I will remember the man as someone who stepped on corpses for his political ambition. For this I cannot wish him peace in afterlife.

Cse Khoda rut karun, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, magar kari na zaahn.

[ May the almighty look after you Mufti Mohammad Sayeed but I seriously doubt He will. ]

BJP’s Deepawali Crackers in Kerala

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           NOVEMBER 08, 2015           09.00 P.M.

1

In bipolar KERALA politics, BJP is yet to open an account in Lok Sabha or Vidhan Sabha. But people of KERALA this time delivered a severe jolt to the ruling dispensation United Democratic Front [ UDF ] led by Congress in the Local Body Elections. The only opposition Left Democratic Front [ LDF ] led by CPM emerged winner. But the Bharatiya Janata Party [ BJP ] made strong inroads and sent shivers down the spine of the ruling dispensation and the opposition.

KERALA is bipolar state. UDF, Congress led front and LDF, CPM led front generally rule the state one after another. But the result of Local Body Elections 2015 show that Bharatiya Janata Party improved its seats in Village / Block / District Panchayats and Municipalities / Corporations of KERALA.

BJP had alliance with Sree Narayan Dharma Paripalana Yogam [ SNDP Yogam ]. This alliance with backward caste helped BJP.

Some of these figures are not big compared to the victory figures of CPM led Left Democratic Front. But one has to remember that state of KERALA is a bipolar state. BJP is yet to open account in Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha. Therefore, in my opinion, these results as very significant. If BJP could perform so impressively in Local Body Elections, then its performance in coming Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha would certainly be epoch-making.

BJP Victories in 2015 : From Andaman to Ladakh & Goa

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           OCTOBER 28, 2015           12.40 P.M.

May 2014 is the date India, Indians and the world wont be able to forget for a long time. It is permanently etched in the memory of the nationalists, seculars, Left-Liberals of India and the people of the world at large. Result of Indian general elections were declared in May and Narendra Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party won absolute majority on its own in LOK SABHA.

Almost 5 months later in October 2014 MAHARASHTRA and HARYANA, 2 states went to polls. BJP won the elections and formed governments in both the states for the first time.

Two months later in November / December 2014 JHARKHAND and JAMMU & KASHMIR state assemblies went to polls. BJP again won Jharkhand on its own and formed the government. BJP swept Jammu but fell short of majority in Jammu & Kashmir assembly. It formed the government with the help of PDP of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. It got post of Speaker and Dy. Chief Minister and heads several important ministries. Both the state governments are the first for BJP. JHARKHAND on its own and JAMMU & KASHMIR in coalition.

So the year 2014 ended with unprecedented success for BJP. First Lok Sabha, then in the assemblies of MAHARASHTRA, HARYANA , JHARKHAND and JAMMU & KASHMIR, BJP scored impressive victory in all the 4 states.

2015 started with a sour note. In February 2015, BJP lost DELHI to Aam Aadmi Party. Its BJP’s only defeat till date. Its only defeat of indefatigable Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister and modern-day Chanakya and bellicose Amit Shah, the BJP President.

August 2015 came as the month of victory in Local Body elections. BJP made impressive gains in the municipal boards and municipal corporations in MADHYA PRADESH, RAJASTHAN and BRUHAT BENGALURU MAHANAGARA PALIKE. BJP made clean sweep in the Local Body elections of the 3 states.

But the real game changer came a month later.

Came month of September 2015 and it brought unexpected and unprecedented victory of BJP in Panchayat and Municipal elections of ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS. Andaman & Nicobar Islands are the remote area and was not considered as stronghold of BJP.

All the other above mentioned national, provincial and local body elections were widely reported and discussed in the national print and electronic media. But Local Body elections of ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS were not even prominently and properly reported. Media almost ignored it. Therefore I am chronicling results of these election.

October 2015 brought another BJP victory to our notice. BJP swept LADAKH AUTONOMOUS HILL DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL. It won 2/3rd majority in LAHDC for the first time.

In the same month, i.e. October 2015, while I was about to post this blog, last night came the news of BJP victory in the GOA Local Body Elections. Out of 11 Municipal Councils, BJP won 6, Congress won 4 and 1 got hung verdict.

But let me first start with Andaman & Nicobar Island results.

Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections

================================================

A complete rejection of the Congress, acceptance of RSS programmes and attraction for Narendra Modi’s development plank seem to have worked in favour of the BJP, which registered a landslide victory in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections in October 2015.

Coming at a time when the BJP has conquered an area that has a mixed demography comprising Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus and Christians.

 Total Seats – 26 : BJP 18 / Congress 5 / National Conference 2 / Independent 1

Goa Municipal Council Results

===============================

Candidates backed by BJP won majority of seats in 6 municipal councils in Goa in the local body elections, while Congress-backed candidates won majority in 4 towns.

Total Municipal Councils – 11 : BJP 6 / Congress 4 / Hung 1

BJP won majority of seats in Mapusa, Mormugao (Vasco-da-Gama), Sanguem, Pernem, Curchorem and Bicholim.

Congress won majority in Valpoi, Quepem, Margao, and Cuncolim.

Canacona saw the candidates from two sides winning five seats each.

———————————————————————

Thus apart from DELHI assembly elections, BJP, after winning Lok Sabha, won 4 assembly elections of MAHARASHTRA, HARYANA, JHARKHAND and JAMMU & KASHMIR.

BJP also won Local Body Elections in 6 states of MADHYA PRADESH, RAJASTHAN, BENGALURU, ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS, LADAKH and GOA.

Battle of BIHAR is going on. Election of 3rd phase is going to be held today. 2 phases are still left. Results will be out on November 8, 2015. But about Bihar, I will write later.

[ I have taken data of ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS elections from http://www.andamanchronicle.net and from the website of Election Commission.

Data of LADAKH election is taken from http://www.dailymail.co.uk.

One Year of Modi & A Blind Arun Shourie

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MAY 12, 2015           06.20,  P.M.

Narendra Modi government will be completing one year in office on May 25th, 2015. To commemorate the occasion, there are many articles and several unsolicited advises for Narendra Modi in various newspapers and TV channels. All the critics assume as if he is not Narendra Modi, the hugely successful Chief Minister of Gujarat for 12 long years, but a school kid and knows nothing about politics. Therefore he should be advised about governance.

Every government of the day is prone to criticism and analysis. People should criticize, scrutinize and put forward suggestions for good governance. Some friends and well-wishers of Narendra Modi are rightly doing so.

There are some enemies also. These secular, Left-Liberal, Nehruvian socialists are his political opponents and a group of journalists, known in Social Media as PRESSTITUTES. Congress leaders and leaders of other parties are hellbent that this government must fail and a discredited Narendra Modi should be banished from New Delhi and live there after in perpetual disgrace. PRESSTITUTES are helping them in this endeavour.

And there are FRENEMIES [ Friends in his presence + Enemies in his absence ] also. In the garb of forwarding constructive critique, they are dishing out biased, highly opinionated and one-sided, false stories. These disgruntled lot want to defame Narendra Modi and his government at any cost because they are not entertained by him and are not getting anything from this government. Arun Shourie, for sure, is one of them. He is the kingpin of Narendra Modi’s FRENEMIES.

Shourie can’t see national and international press writings about Modi government. He seems to be unaware of the views of the world leaders about PM Modi and the international accolades he is getting. Though,he praises Modi government’s foreign policy, but still finds faults with it.

Arun Shourie is highly critical about the economic policy orientation of Modi government. He forgets MAKE IN INDIA campaign. He is oblivious of JAN DHAN YOJANA / JAN SURAKSHA YOJANA . MAKE IN INDIA is for the industry and gigantic enterprises. JAN DHAN / JAN SURAKSHA schemes are for the poor populace. Thus Modi government is taking care of all the sections and segments of Indian society.

Shourie doesn’t care about the statistics provided by government or independent sources, but has gumption to come on national television and hurl unsubstantiated charges and proffer it as critique. He certainly has a hidden agenda.

Last week I wrote a blog denouncing his dishonesty. Here is the link

Arun Shourie , A Dishonest Intellectual

It gives point by point answer to his 10 points charge sheet against PM Modi. In the present blog I am giving data of PM Modi’s achievements in the field of foreign and economic affairs. All the facts are taken from the twitter-handles of eminent twitter activists. Never-happened-before-achievements are here for everyone to see.

It is not for nothing that BJP [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] is now the largest, biggest party of the world. BJP now has 10 crore+ members. Though Arun Shourie is critical of Amit Shah also.

Today as I am about to post the blog, I just noticed a new tweet about 1 Year of Narendra Modi and 60 Years of Congress Scams. I am posting it here :

I am not a famous journalist like Arun Shourie. I am not a world-famous intellectual. I am an ordinary citizen of India. If I can see all the above mentioned trends, why can’t Arun Shourie? If I can read all the statistics, why can’t Arun Shourie? It means he has an agenda. He is aggrieved that he is not getting any importance from Modi government. So he is venting out his frustration. It is the case of sour grapes.

Bru Tribe : Refugee In Their Own Country

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MARCH 07, 2014           00.30 A.M.

Frankly speaking , few weeks back , I was unaware of the existence of Bru tribe of Mizoram . Years ago I had read about some conflict between Mizos of Mizoram and one particular tribe living there , near Bangla Desh and Tripura border . I knew that these days that particular tribe live in Tripura in exile. But apart from that I have not heard anything about Brus . When last week I read a couple of articles in Times of India and Hindustan Times , I came to know that the tribe in question is Bru and they are living in tents as refugee in their own country since 17 years.

The roots of the conflict can be traced to 1994, when a political party called the Bru National Union (BNU) was formed to promote the tribe’s welfare. In September 1997, at a conference in Saipuilui village in Mamit district, the BNU adopted a resolution to demand for an Autonomous District Council (ADC) for Brus in the western belt of Mizoram. Mizoram is predominantly inhabited by Mizos. Other tribes in the state include the Hmars, the Lai and the Chakmas, each of whom have their own ADC. Interestingly, though the Brus are the largest minority in Mizoram their demand for an ADC went unheeded. “What was wrong with that demand?” asks Elvis Chorkhy, chairman of the Bru Coordination Committee that has been working with the government to repatriate the Brus. “ Was it so unconstitutional as to lead to the physical torture and harassment of the Brus ?”

The bloody ethnic clashes of 1997 displaced  over 4000 Brus initially . They fled to neighbouring Assam and Tripura’s sleepy town of Kanchanpur , which lies about 45 km from the Mizoram border. 17 years ago, thousands of Brus fleeing attacks from Mizos took refuge here. Many crossed the border on foot. The displaced Brus put up temporary shelters on the lower tracts of the Jampui hills that separate Tripura from Mizoram and Bangladesh. Today, there are over 35,000 Internally Displaced Persons languishing in the seven camps spread over the region. Here, scores live amidst filth and human waste with small mountain streams being the only source of drinking water. The incident, like many others in the North East India , hardly made it to the national media , print and electronic both .

[………The Map of Mizoram showing Bru Dominated Areas & Area of Bru Refugee Camps in Tripura ]

To know more about the Bru tribe , I checked Wikipedia and came to know a fascinating history about them . I am reproducing the Wikipedia article in verbatim .

The history of Bru (Reangs)

========================================

The Bru are the second most populous tribe of Tripura after the Tripuris. According to the legend, a Tripuri prince who was once exiled by the King made his way, along with his followers, to the Mayani Thalang area of Lushai hills [ now Mizoram ] and founded a state over there. He proclaimed himself King and his descendants too ruled over the break-away state for generations. As it sometimes happens, there came a time when there was no heir to succeed to the throne, leading to anarchy in the kingdom. At around the same time, bitter feud and internal vendetta saw four chiefs of the following sub tribes Twikluha, Yongsika, Paisika, Tuibruha leave their hearth and home along with their entourages to migrate back to the state of Tripura. It was a long and difficult journey, fraught with danger and the travellers had to make more than a couple of attempts before they successfully made their way up the Dombur hill.

At the time, Mahendra Manikya ruled the kingdom of Tripura. The chiefs made many attempts to reach the King to request asylum. They approached ministers, bureaucrats, and courtiers for help in arranging a meeting with the King but with no success. By this time, they had exhausted their supplies and were rather anxious to catch the attention of the King. Finally in desperation, they breached the dam on the river Gumti where worshippers had gathered for prayers. This was a serious crime and all of them were immediately apprehended and brought before the king. The crime was a serious one and merited capital punishment. But before the King could pass his judgement, the chiefs managed to send word to the Queen Gunoboti. They begged her for help and she persuaded the King to forgive them. The chiefs swore fealty to the Queen and to the throne of Tripura and settled down in the Kingdom. Popular legend has it that the Queen even offered the chiefs breast milk, to symbolize their new parent-child relationship, in a large brass pan which was gifted to the chiefs along with other valuable things, carefully preserved by Reangs till date.

The latest episode in the ongoing conflict between Mizos and Brus came on November 23 , 2013 . It was two days before the Mizoram assembly elections, when Bru militants allegedly belonging to the Bru Democratic Front of Mizoram (BDFM) and helped by members of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) abducted three young men.

The incident reignited the long-standing conflict between the Mizos and the minority Brus . Enraged by the abduction of the Mizos, several protests spearheaded mostly by the powerful NGOs MZP and the Young Mizo Association (YMA) were organised throughout the state. Subsequently, local village headmen were threatened with dire consequences if they did not ask the militants to release the Mizos.

In modern Mizoram one can find the Mizo mindset about Bru tribe in a Mizoram Home department letter sent to National Human Rights Commission . In the letter dated February 10, the Home department of the Mizoram government listed the reasons that led to the original conflict between the Mizos and the Brus. According to the document, the Brus — recognised as Reangs as per the Constitution (Schedule Tribes) Order, 1950 — fled persecution in the erstwhile Tippera kingdom (now divided between Tripura and Bangladesh) to arrive in Mizoram in the early 1940s. “Brus have always been outsiders and can never be a part of the larger Mizo culture,” says Lalmuanpuia Punte, who was MZP’s president in 1997.

The Mizos say the Bru exodus of 1997 can be traced to a ‘circular’ signed by Bruno Msha, who was then the Bru Student Union president and is currently the general secretary of the Mizoram Bru Displaced Peoples’ Forum (MBDPF). Dated March 1998, the ‘circular’ asks all Bru headmen to evacuate their villages and leave Mizoram because of a possible clash between Bru militants and Mizoram security personnel. Msha, who denies signing any such document, claims the story is a Mizo attempt to blame Bru militants for the exodus.

Each side might apportion blame to the other but ultimately, the ethnic violence of 1997 pushed many Brus into relief camps in a remote part of Tripura that borders Mizoram and Bangladesh.

Things, however, continue to look bleak for over 35,000 people still stuck in the forgotten camps of Tripura. A report by the Asian Indigenous and Tribal Peoples Network says ‘The ration quota is so inadequate that Brus do not report deaths as it means a further reduction of the rations’. The abject conditions and the lack of employment and education have made the camps a good recruiting ground for militants. Many young Brus have missed out on education and cannot even get job cards under central government schemes. “This is why we are asking for a Primitive Group Program and a development council which will look after the upliftment of the community once it is repatriated,” says Bruno Msha of the MBDPF.

Adults get a cash dole of Rs. 150 per month and 600 gms of rice per day while minors get half that amount. This is much less than other internally displaced groups like the Kashmiri Pandits and even the Sri Lankan refugees in Tamil Nadu have received in the past. Leaders of the MBDPF maintain that unless compensation is increased, no one will go back. Both the home department and Mizo organisations, allege that any attempts at repatriation are foiled by the staging of untoward incidents. The Bru side alleges that it is a conspiracy by Mizos who don’t want Brus to return. With only 5,627 people rehabilitated until last October, the Mizoram government has a mammoth task on its hands. “It has become necessary to remove those camps and resettle the displaced. We are losing precious time and a generation of kids is losing their future. The process needs to be expedited,” said Chorkhy.

But who cares? Mizoram government of Indian National Congress is heartless . National media is silent . National parties are ignorant . Few thousand Brus are insignificant for electoral arithmetic . So these hapless citizens of India are languishing in refugee camps . They are homeless in their own homeland .

According to me Bharatiya Janata Party should do something for these children of lesser God . It may not help electorally , but it is a national cause . A whole generation of Brus are getting deprived of their rights . We must stand for them . Politics is one thing , humanity is something else .

The Telegraph’s Lie About Narendra Modi Exposed

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           NOVEMBER 15 , 2013           02.00 P.M.

This is not an original blog written by me . In fact this is not a blog at all . I follow Shri Kiran Kumar ji on twitter . I read few of his postings about Shri Narendra Modi‘s Patna speech in Hunkar Rally . I knew that some canard is being spread and facts are twisted and concocted by vested interests . I wanted to write about the facts and the canards . But it was taking time , as my son met with an accident and I was in and out of the hospital most of the time . So my blog remained incomplete .
Suddenly I read these tweets and thought it proper to copy / paste them on my blog space . Therefore these 4 / 5 tweets are taken from the twitter-handle of Shri Kiran Kumar ji and are being quoted here .
I express my gratitude to Shri Kiran Kumar ji . I also express regrets for not taking his prior permission . I hope I will be forgiven .
Readers can go through it and find out what Shri Narendra Modi actually said in the Hunkar Rally of Patna and what is being spread by paid media . I denounce Shri Shankarshan Thakur for twisting the facts and spreading it for the convenience of his political masters . This is nothing less than professional misconduct . It is shame for a journalist .

I hope these tweets will make picture clear and discerning public can judge the facts , which Shri Narendra Modi really said and the fiction and canard , which the paid media is deliberately and mischievously spreading on the orders of their masters .

I express shock and dismay that in the age of social media activism , such kind of canards can be cooked up and dished out by unscrupulous elements of paid media .

Lal Krishna Advani & Dilip Kumar

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           SEPTEMBER 19 , 2013           11 . 10 P.M.

I wanted to write this blog a week back , when Shri Narendra Modi was anointed as the Prime Ministerial candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party . But I was busy writing an article on Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya for a Kenyan magazine , which is published from Nairobi , capital of Kenya . Yesterday I mailed that article to Shri Ram Chandra Pandey , Pracharak of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh , Kenya . Today , as I am relatively free , I am sitting in my study and writing this blog .

I am a fan of Dilip Kumar . My veneration for him knows no limit . In his career spanning 54 years [ when he was working and was active ] , he has done only 59 films [ including Guest appearances ] . Out of his 59 released films , I have seen 45 . I have seen many of his films several times . Ironically I have not seen his first film Jwaar Bhata ” [ 1944 ] and his last film ” Quila ” [ 1998 ] .

Let us have a look on his career and achievements . He was nominated 18 times for the Filmfare Awards , and won it 8  times . He was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1991 , Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and was a nominated member of Rajya Sabha also for one term . In 1998 he got Nishan – E – Imtiaz from the government of Pakistan .

His towering and gigantic personality hovered over my horizon from Ganga Jumna ” [ 1961 ] , which I watched in 1967 , till today , when he is recuperating in the ICU of Lilavati hospital .

Thus from 1967 to 2013 , it is a 46 – year – long association full of reverence , veneration and respect . It refuses to ebb .

English: I took this picture when he paid a vi...

Dilip Kumar in MouthShut.com office in 2006 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

But Dilip Kumar’s benign and all-pervading shadow on my life was disturbed and somewhat eclipsed with the advent of Amitabh Bachchan in 1969 . From Saat Hindustani ” [ 1969 ] to ” Satyagraha ” [ 2013 ] , he has acted in 186 films [ including Guest appearances & Voice overs ] . And out of 186 , I have watched 120 films . ” Anand ” [ 1971 ] was the first film of Amitabh Bachchan , which I watched . Ironically I have not watched his first film ” Saat Hindustani ” [ 1969 ]  and his latest ” Satyagraha ” [ 2013 ] . An uncanny coincidence of my life , which happened in the case of Dilip Kumar also .

The Amitabh Bachchan juggernaut , in real sense of the term , started with ” Zanjeer ” [ 1973 ] . One year later Dilip Kumar came with a critically acclaimed but flop ” Sagina ” [ 1974 ] .

Two years after ” Zanjeer ” [ 1973 ] , Amitabh Bachchan gave two iconic super hits , ” Deewar ” and ” Sholay ” [ 1975 ] . Again one year later Dilip Kumar came with triple role in a much – delayed and moderate hit  ” Bairaag ” [ 1976 ] .

After hiatus of 5 years , Dilip Kumar started his second innings with hugely successful ” Kranti ” [ 1981 ] . But same year Amitabh Bachchan gave 3 super – hits ” Lawaaris ” , ” Yaraana ” and ” Kaalia ” [ 1981 ] and hugely likable ” Silsila ” [ 1981 ] .

They both , a year later , came together in critically acclaimed , highly likable but a box office dud ” Shakti ” [ 1982 ] .

Dilip Kumar last came in ” Quila ” [ 1998 ] and 2 years later Amitabh Bachchan started his second innings  with hugely successful ” Mohabbatein ” [ 2000 ] . And the juggernaut , which started with ” Zanjeer ” [ 1973 ] still continues unabated in 2013 also .

Thus from  ” Anand ” [ 1971 ] to ” Satyagraha ” [ 2013 ] , it is a 42 – year – long association of me with Amitabh Bachchan also .

Let us have a peek in the other achievements of Amitabh Bachchan . He briefly dabbled in politics and was member of the 8th Lok Sabha . He got Padma Shri in 1984 and Padma Bhushan in 2001. His achievements in the film world are no less spectacular compared to Dilip Kumar . He has got 3 National Awards and unbelievable 39 Filmfare nominations in several categories , though Dilip Kumar holds the record of winning 8 Filmfare trophies .

But I must admit with all honesty that despite his unprecedented and unbelievable accomplishments , acceptance of Amitabh Bachchan was not easy for me . Though I watched his films with much admiration and appreciation , and as stated earlier , I have watched 120 films of Amitabh Bachchan but my hero , my idol was always Dilip Kumar .

Amitabh Bachchan

And I think being a fan and admirer of Dilip Kumar does not mean that I don’t accept Amitabh Bachchan’s persona or demean it . They both hovered on my horizon . They both influenced me immensely . I am a fan of both of them but it is also a fact that Dilip Kumar reigns supreme and stands few notches higher .

Coincidently photographs of Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan , which I have posted here , were clicked in 2006 .

English: cropped photograph of L K Advani with...

L K Advani outside his residence. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Same is the case with Shri Lal Krishna Advani . I first heard of him in 1967 when I was in High School . 1967 is the same year when I came to know about Dilip Kumar through his film , a golden jubilee hit ” Ganga Jumna ” . So in an uncanny way my association with Dilip Kumar and Advani ji started in the same year , 1967 .

Advani ji became my political hero during my school , college and university days . I came to know Dilip Kumar when Amitabh Bachchan was yet to make his debut . In the same way when I started admiring Lal Krishna Advani , Shri Narendra Modi was yet to make his debut in politics .

Shri Narendra Modi , just like Amitabh Bachchan , has spectacular achievements to his credit . Shri Narendra Modi , just like Amitabh Bachchan , is hugely popular . Shri Narendra Modi , just like Amitabh Bachchan , is continuing with his unstoppable juggernaut . Shri Narendra Modi , just like Amitabh Bachchan , is the current idol and is liked by the cadre immensely .

English: Narendra Modi in Press Conference

Narendra Modi in Press Conference (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

But as I have said earlier , in my heart Dilip Kumar still reigns supreme . And being a fan of Dilip Kumar is in no way an insult to Amitabh Bachchan . Admiring Dilip Kumar is in no way derogatory to Amitabh Bachchan . In the same way my political hero is Shri Lal Krishna Advani . And being a Lal Krishna Advani admirer is in no way an insult to Shri Narendra Modi .

It is just a question of whom you grow with . Your hero of growing years is going to be your hero till your last breath .

Shri Narendra Modi , just like Amitabh Bachchan , is the current favourite . But it doesn’t mean that Dilip Kumar and Lal Krishna Advani have no relevance or have no achievements to their credit . I like Shri Narendra Modi and Amitabh Bachchan for their achievements , but I idolize Dilip Kumar and Lal Krishna Advani for their glorious innings and immense contribution in their respective fields .

I again assert that being an admirer of Advani ji does not make me an automatic hater of Modi ji . Persons like me who have admired Advani ji all their life , can’t accept a new icon in one night . It is going to be a slow and difficult process . This was the case with Amitabh Bachchan also . But gradually Amitabh Bachchan’s all-pervading shadow inundated me completely . Slowly and eventually same will definitely happen with Modi ji also . But till then Advani ji is my political hero as Dilip Kumar is my screen idol .

29 March 1928 – 07 Sep 2013

Former Indian Foreign Secretary and former controversial Governor of Uttar Pradesh , Romesh Bhandari , died on September 07 , 2013 at the age of 85 . But the news came 2 days later in today’s newspapers .

He was born in Lahore , Pakistan . His father Amar Nath Bhandari was a Punjab High Court Judge , who was part of the bench which decided Gandhi Assassination case .

He served as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi  and  Andaman and Nicobar Islands . Later on he was appointed governor of Tripura  ,  Goa and finally  Uttar Pradesh .

He died on the night of 7th September 2013 after a prolonged illness . As I have stated earlier , news came two days after his death . And it was insignificantly consigned in the small column of the newspapers .

To secure this much coverage , he mortgaged his dignity . He became a servile flatterer and a fawning parasite . During his tenure of the governor of Uttar Pradesh , he became a shameless sycophant of his political masters and allowed , hatched and supervised all kind of machinations to topple democratically elected BJP government of Kalyan Singh . In a midnight coup , he dismissed Kalyan Singh and appointed his stooge Jagdambika Pal , as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh . Today Jagdambika Pal is a prominent member of the Congress party .

It is another story that the illegal government of Jagdambika Pal did not survive and Romesh Bhandari had egg on his arrogant face . He was audacious enough to carry on as the governor of Uttar Pradesh even after this fiasco . When BJP government was formed at the centre , he meekly submitted his resignation and ran away from Uttar Pradesh .

In my life I have watched and read about many governors of various provinces . But Romesh Bhandari was allegedly the most shameless and cunning of them all . He was an unabashed sycophant . Little wonder that his death evoked no sympathy . Even present day mandarins of Indian National Congress chose to ignore his inconsequential and controversial legacy . He did every thing to please his masters . He subverted every tenet of the constitution of India . He allowed Raj Bhawan of Uttar Pradesh to become a chamber of conspiracy . He himself became a doormat of his political masters . And yet , after his death , he got just few lines tucked in the inner pages of the national newspapers and that too , after two days .

Ignominy , thy name is Romesh Bhandari !

I am sorry that I have to write this about him after his death . It is said that you should speak only good about the dead . But Romesh Bhandari is the exception . That is the reason I have not posted my photograph in sad mood , which I always post when I write an obituary .

Janata Party Merges With BJP , An Era Ends

DSC01182

GURGAON – NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION – INDIA           AUGUST 23 , 2013           10.45 P.M.

There was an innocuous news in the national newspapers last week . Subramanian Swamy merged his Janata Party with the Bharatiya Janata Party . There were some sarcastic remarks about the defunct party merging with BJP . Some chose to ignore the news . And some kept silence after initial taunt . But for me it opened floodgate of memories of some bygone era . Some cherished memories of my young days came to knock at my  door . I became nostalgic and started remembering those eventful days in the history of our nation .

Raj Narain, a socialist leader, had filed a legal writ alleging electoral malpractice against Indira Gandhi in 1971. On 12 June 1975, Allahabad High Court found her guilty of using corrupt electoral practices in her 1971 election victory over Narain in the Rae Bareli constituency. She was barred from contesting any election for the next six years. Economic problems, corruption and the conviction of Gandhi led to widespread protests against the Congress ( I ) government, which responded by imposing a State of Emergency in the country . The rationale was that of preserving national security.

However, the government introduced press censorship, postponed elections and banned strikes and rallies. Opposition leaders such as Jayaprakash Narayan, Jivatram Kripalani and Morarji Desai were imprisoned, along with thousands of other political activists.

When the State of Emergency was lifted and new elections called in 1977, opposition political parties such as the Congress (O), Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Bharatiya Lok Dal as well as defectors from the Congress ( I ) , known as Congress For Democracy ( CFD ) joined to form the Janata party, which won a sweeping majority in the Indian Parliament. Raj Narain defeated Indira Gandhi at Rae Bareilly in those elections.

Constituent Parties of Janata Party

Congress (Urs) leaders like Devaraj Urs joined Janata Party in the later stage.

In the general election held after the end of the state of emergency in 1977, the Janata party defeated Congress ( I ) to form the first non-Congress government in the history of the Republic of India. I heard the news of formation of Janata Party , defeat of Indira Gandhi and the Congress on radio . I still remember , I didn’t sleep a wink , and kept on listening the news throughout the night . Even today I am unable to forget that feeling after listening that Invincible Indira Gandhi got defeated and the Congress will no longer going to rule us .

The Janata Party formed the government with Morarji Desai as prime minister. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had become the leader of the Jana Sangh after Deen Dayal Upadhyaya’s death in 1967, was appointed as the external affairs minister in the new government.

The new Janata-led government reversed many Emergency-era decrees and opened official investigations into Emergency-era abuses. Although several major foreign policy and economic reforms were attempted, continuous in-fighting and ideological differences made the Janata government unable to effectively address national problems. By mid-1979, Prime Minister Morarji Desai was forced to resign and his successor Chaudhary Charan Singh failed to sustain a parliamentary majority as alliance partners withdrew support. Popular disenchantment with the political in-fighting and ineffective government led to the resurgence of Gandhi and her new Congress (I) party, which won the general election called in 1980.

The Janata government did not last long, though. Morarji Desai resigned as prime minister, and the Janata party was consequently dissolved.

Bharatiya Janata Party (1980-)

In 1980, the leaders and workers of the former Bharatiya Jana Sangh, founded the Bharatiya Janata Party with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as its first president .

Although the original Janata Party fragmented and eventually dissolved, modern political parties continue to invoke its legacy. Subramanian Swamy kept the name Janata Party , and was the National President of the party .

The irony of the situation or fate is that Bharatiya Jan Sangh members were forced to leave Janata Party on the pretext of dual membership . They chose to remain loyal to RSS ideology and left Janata Party and formed Bharatiya janata Party in 1980 . Quirk of the fate forced the same Janata Party to merge itself with the Bharatiya Janata Party . In August 2013, when the news came that the party was merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party , I just smiled .

Destiny plays strange games . Sometimes even bizarre games . BJP was formed after several swayamsevaks came out of Janata Party on the issue of dual membership and 33 years later , the parent body came and merged itself with the BJP .

Issue of Dual membership and the cacophony that followed , is finished forever . Socialists , who raised the issue , are extinct now . And last but not the least , Janata Party ceases to exist .
