MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           NOVEMBER 06 , 2015           12.35 P.M.

[ MILESTONE : Vidur’s Film Diary completed 6th year of its existence in May 2015. June 2015 marks the beginning of its journey in the 7th year. ]

As an ACTING TRAINER my success rate was 40% in the year 2013 – 2014 . It jumps to 55% in 2014 – 2015. This is unprecedented for any ACTING INSTITUTE or ACTING TRAINER. I am continuously writing Vidur’s Film Diary since 6 years. And to my utter surprise I am noticing that there were no lean months in these 6 years. It never happened that a month came and there were no student in any of the 5 fields of entertainment, which my diary covers. There were more than a dozen working students every month.

For the full understanding of my body of work in 2013 – 2014 & 2014 – 2015, please watch the 05 videos posted below :

Vidur’s Telly Tales – 11 : Finding Gauri Bhosle

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           NOVEMBER 24 , 2012           00.05 A.M.

One day I woke up in the morning and saw an ad in the news papers about some Gauri Bhosle , who was missing from her London home . I was intrigued because the face seemed familiar . Within few seconds I recognized the face . The girl Gauri Bhosle was none other than my student Mrunal Thakur .

With Mrunal Thakur / Gauri Bhosle

With Mrunal Thakur / Gauri Bhosle

It then occurred to me that this is not an ad for a missing person but an ad for the coming serial ” Khamoshiyan “ . Mrunal Thakur is playing main female protagonist named Gauri Bhosle in ” Khamoshiyan “ , which is currently being aired on Star Plus .

The serial is being produced by Sai Deodhar and her husband Shakti Anand . Incidentally Sai Deodhar is herself my old student . Sai is herself a fabulous actor but this time she decided to remain behind the camera .

With Sai Deodhar

With Sai Deodhar

Before the commencement of shooting , Mrunal Thakur was sent to me for training by Sai Deodhar . I must say that Mrunal is very hard-working , dedicated and sincere student . She used to attend morning and evening both the batches because there was not much time available and she had to prepare her complex character within the short time .

Before the start of the shooting of  ” Khamoshiyan ” , I had to go to Manali to train Kalki Koechlin for Dharma Production’s up – coming venture ” Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani ” . One day I got a call from Mrunal Thakur . She called me to inform that she is starting a new journey of her life and she needs my blessings . I was overwhelmed . There was no need of this gesture . A tutor always blesses his students . It was so sweet of her to call me and seek my blessings . In today’s time when few aggrieved students refuse to acknowledge me , when they openly make a statement that I know nothing , that I am not a good trainer , this gesture of Mrunal Thakur stands tall and is very humbling . It shows that she got good upbringing from her parents . She is not like some of the wannabe zombies who are disrespectful to me and thus show their poor ,  shameful and abominable upbringing .

I am happy for Mrunal Thakur and wish her all the success in life . I , along with the staff and students of my acting institute , Vidur’s Kreating Charakters , congratulate her and bless her .

May God give her all the success she deserves in life !!

Sunset Boulevard ( 7 ) : ” Vanishing Milestones “

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JULY 07 , 2012           01.00 A.M.

I wrote 1st blog in the ” Sunset Boulevard ” category on December 28 , 2009 . It was about Bajaj Scooter . There was news that owners of Bajaj are discontinuing the production of their iconic Bajaj scooter permanently . A sense of nostalgia gripped me and I wrote about ” Hamara Bajaj ” . I never thought that one day I would be writing 7th blog in this category .

Recently when I visited my native place Deoria , I suddenly noticed that ubiquitous milestones are slowly but steadily vanishing from the roads . Such iconic part of one’s life is now giving way to some metallic mileposts and no one is noticing it .

What is a milestone ?

As dictionary explains its meaning ; ” a milestone is a stone functioning as a milepost .”

Later on the word milestone started carrying other meaning also . A milestone is refered to as ” a significant event or stage in the life , progress , development in the life of a person and / or a nation . “

Since olden times , milestones are used on the roads to show a mile of distance from one place to another . In those days of yore when ” Google Earth ” and ” Google Maps ” were yet to appear and digital maps with the ; GPRS [ Global Positioning Radio System ] or GPS [ Global Positioning System ] technology were yet to become a part of our lives , a milestone was the only indicator or sign which indicated that we are travelling on the right path .

Roman Empire

Milestones were originally stone obelisks – made from granite marble or whatever local stone was available – and later concrete posts. They were widely used by Roman Empire road builders and were an important part of any Roman road network . Many Roman milestones only record the name of the reigning emperor without giving any place names or distances.  The first Roman milestones appeared on the Appian way. At the centre of Rome, the “Golden Milestone” was erected to mark the presumed centre of the empire : this milestone has since been lost. The Golden Milestone inspired the Zero Milestone in Washington, D.C., intended as the point from which all road distances in the United States should be reckoned.

 Byzantine Empire

A mile-marker monument, the Milion , was erected in the early 4th century AD in Constantinople . It served as the starting point for measurement of distances for all the roads leading to the cities of the Byzantine Empire , and had the same function as the Milliarium Aureum of Ancient Rome . The Milion survived intact until at least the late 15th century. Its fragments were discovered again in the late 1960s. A fragment is re-erected as a pillar.

Post Medieval Europe

In Europe , the distance measured typically starts at specified point within a city or town , as many roads were named for the towns at either end . For example in London , United Kingdom , a plaque near the Eleanor cross at Charing Cross is the reference point from which distances from London to other towns and cities are measured . In the UK, milestones are especially associated with former Turnpike roads .

 Modern highways

The historical term milestone is still used today, even though the “stones” are typically metal signs and in most countries are based on metric rather than imperial units of measure . Also found today are more closely spaced signs containing fractional numbers , and signs along railways, beaches and canals .

Milestones on Indian highways typically have white backgrounds with yellow tops (on national highways) or green tops (on state highways) . The names of cities and distances are painted in black . The names of the nearest towns and cities are written along with distance in kilometres . On undivided highways , both sides of the milestones are used , telling the distance to the nearest cities in each direction . The highway number is written on the head of the milestone . The sum of the distances of two nearest cities in each direction from the milestone is listed on the side .

I am posting recently clicked photo of Zero Milestone of Deoria city . It is freshly painted because it is just opposite the District magistrate’s Bungalow .

This huge stone structure , which gives the distance of various city from Deoria , is also freshly painted and it stands just in front of the District Magistrate’s Bungalow . These three are a part of my life . I have seen these three milestones or mileposts since my childhood days . I am a wanderer and am used to see milestones while travelling  .

These photos , which I have taken from the internet , tell us that a milestone is the part of our civilization since the days of Roman Empire .

But alas , things are changing . Roads of yore are gone . Now Highways and Expressways have taken their place . And with the advent of these Highways and Expressways , milestones are also gone . Now metal mileposts with fluorescent colours have taken their place . On my numerous journeys , I have noticed these new age milestones but it never occurred to me that old milestones of my childhood will vanish one day .

These metal milestones are more convenient and easy to see during night because of the fluorescent colours , but the older version of the milestones have some distinct charm and some romantic attraction .

On my recent visit to Deoria when I travelled to my wife’s village Ghortap , I noticed the pitiable condition of the milestones . You can watch yourselves . You can’t read the name or distance because it is almost buried in the ground and also not painted . And remember , this road connects Deoria to Kushinagar , a Buddhist pilgrimage centre where Gautam Buddha attained NIRVANA . Several foreign dignitaries visit this place quite often .

Very soon these new age milestones or mileposts will replace our age-old milestones made of stone or rock . People of younger generation will forget about these ubiquitous milestones , which were so intrinsically attached to our being not very long ago .

New Age Milestone

New Age Milestone

Alas ! One more part of my life will cease to exist very soon . There is no official announcement . There is no official order of discontinuation of old milestones . But I know it wont be seen anymore . It wont be around few years after .

Milestone will be googled and it will only be seen in some dictionary or encyclopaedia .

Immortality at Madame Tussauds

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA         NOVEMBER 03 , 2011           10.40 P.M

Last week as I was scrolling through my Twitter timeline , www.twitter.com/VidurChaturvedi    ,I got the news that Kareena Kapoor‘s wax statue was unveiled at Madame Tussauds Wax Studio , Blackpool . Before Kareena Kapoor ,  Hritik Roshan‘s wax statue was also unveiled at the Madame Tussauds studio . It is a rare honour. Till today only six Hindi film artistes have been immortalized at Madame Tussauds . They are Amitabh Bachchan , Aishwarya Rai , Shah Rukh Khan , Salman Khan , Hritik Roshan and now Kareena Kapoor . Out of these 06 dignitaries , last 02 are my students .

Tussaud was a French national . Her mother worked as a housekeeper for Dr. Philippe Curtius in Switzerland , who skilled in wax modelling. Tussaud learnt art of making wax statues from Dr. Philippe Curtius . She made her first wax statue in 1777. Voltaire was the first person to be immortalized in wax . Rousseau and Benjamin Franklin were other famous people , who followed Voltaire. She went to London in 1802 and could not return to France because of the Franco – British War . Finally in 1835 she settled down in Baker Street , London and opened a museum , now known as Madame Tussauds Wax Museum.

In that very museum Kareena Kapoor and Hritik Roshana‘s wax statues were unveiled . Destiny some times plays very strange games . In 2000 , Hritik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor were signed to play romantic leads in ” Kaho Naa…………..Pyaar Hai ” . I was assigned to train them for the movie . But destiny willed otherwise. While training was going on , another announcement about another new – comer star – son was made .The film in question was ” Refugee “ and the debutant was Abhishek Bachchan . Kareena was very keen to do ” Refugee “ . Since she could not debut in two movies simultaneously , she opted for ” Refugee “ . Though she was under contract but sensing her eagerness to do ” Refugee  ” , Mr. Rakesh Roshan freed her and signed Amisha Patel for ” Kaho Naa ………. Pyaar Hai  “ . Film was released on January 14 , 2000 and created history . ” Refugee “ was also released same year on June 30 , 2000 .

Hritik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor were not destined to debut together . Though , later on , they did a couple of films together but barring ” Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham “ they could not give memorable films. But , destiny brought them together again and this time in wax avatar . What various film – maker could not achieve , Madama Tussauds studio accomplished and now these two hottest box office stars of Hindi cinema are perennially paired together in wax.

Kareena Kapoor

I am happy for them . They are my students and when they are being honoured in such manner , I am thrilled . I am too small a man to dream of being ever at Madame Tussauds . But I feel my presence at Madame Tussauds through the wax statues of Kareena Kapoor and Hritik Roshan .

And the fact of the matter is that it is just the beginning of their journey and they have many more miles to go .

28 Years & Two Cricket World Cups

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA                 APRIL 05 , 2011                    01.15 A. M.

It happened 28 years ago. It was in 1983 and I was in my home town Deoria in Uttar Pradesh. It was era of Black & White T V  and we were watching Cricket World Cup being played at Lord’s in London. I still remember the time when Kapil Dev lifted the Worl Cup at the Lord’s , the Mecca of cricket . That World Cup of 1983 and the image of Indian team is still etched in my memory. In those days Sunil Gavaskar was the cricket icon of India but when Kapil Dev lifted the cup , overnight he became the new icon of Indian cricket.

Lords Cricket Ground - London, England

I must and should admit it here that I have no great knowledge of cricket . But I vividly remember the night of 1983 when I was watching the game in my Deoria house along with my family and I saw Kapil Dev emerging in the balcony of Lord’s holding the cup in his hand. A sense of national pride engulfed me.

Wankhede Cricket Stadium, Mumbai , India

Wankhede Cricket Stadium, Mumbai , India

If we look at the history of World Cup and its 9 matches till date, it is quite fascinating. In 1975  West Indies won the cup and defeated Australia by 17 runs. In 1979 West Indies again won the cup by defeating England by 92 runs. Legendary Clive Lloyd , the West Indies captain , was hoping for a hat trick in 1983 but his dreams were shattered by resurgent Indian team , led by Kapil Dev. Madan Lal , Mohinder Amarnath , Balwinder Sandhu and Roger Binny bowled well and were successful in defending a tiny total of 183. Not only West Indies but  no one believed that mighty and two-time winner West Indies could be dismissed for 140. But they were defeated and India won the cup in 1983 and made history.

After this , in 1987 Australia won the cup by defeating England by 7 runs. In 1992 Pakistan became World champion by defeating England by 22 runs. In 1996 Sri Lanka vanquished Australia by 7 wickets and won the cup. She became the third Asian Nation to won the World Cup after India and Pakistan.

But after this victory it was a 3 successive  and epic victories for Australia. She won in 1999 by defeating Pakistan by 8 wickets. Again in 2003 by defeating India by 125 runs. Then again in 2007 she defeated Sri Lanka by 53 runs.

Australia has unique distinction of winning the cup 4 times. Once defeating her arch rival England in 1987 , and then defeating all the previous Asian winners Pakistan , India and Sri Lanka in 1999 , 2003 and 2007 respectively.

Australia won the cup 4 times. West Indies and India 2 times each and Pakistan and Sri Lanks once each. It is still a long wait for England and South Africa.

So in a way it was a long , tiring and heart breaking wait for us too. And after 28 long years we won the cup again by the team led by Mahender Singh Dhoni.

Its time for joyous celebrations. Its time to savour this moment and its time to bask in the glory and I am precisely doing that. So what , if I don’t know the intricacies and nuances of the game enough.
