MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA            JULY 24, 2013           04.45 P.M.

On April 16, 2013 , I wrote a blog about Pran saheb . He was conferred Dada Saheb Phalke Award . And I posted my admiration for the man . I am posting the link of that blog :

Phalke Award ……………….. And Pran http://wp.me/ptyXI-2Sa

Little did I know that within 3 months , I would be sitting in my office and writing this obituary . Life is unpredictable and its hidden hands play strange and unfathomable games .

On July 12 , 2013 while I was sitting in my study in the night , I suddenly saw a post on the timeline of my facebook – ” RIP Pran Saheb ” . I was stunned . But I know that sometimes facebook postings are wrong and erroneous . So I approached my twitter-handle and it was flooded with the news of his death . Now there was no doubt . It was confirmed . It was true that Pran Saheb left us for his last journey . He was 93 at the time of his death .

I cannot put my grief in words . My association with the persona of Pran Saheb started with films like ;  ” Khandan ” [ 1965 ] , ” Shaheed ” [ 1965 ] , ” Dil Diya Dard Liya ” [ 1966 ] andRam Aur Shyam ” [ 1967 ] . I saw these films in quick succession in Deoria and Allahabad and started admiring him as an actor . ” Tere Mere Sapne ” [ 1999 ] was the last film of Pran Saheb which I watched in Mumbai . Thus it was a 34-year-long association of a fan with the legend .

Pran - Zanjeer

His stupendous innings started in 1940 . He hit the screen 4 years after Ashok Kumar and exactly 4 years before Dilip Kumar . Generations got changed . Times and fashion changed . Era of stars and super-stars came and went away . From Ashok Kumar to Dilip Kumar , from Dilip Kumar to Rajesh Khanna and from Rajesh Khanna to Amitabh Bachchan , several film stars came , ruled and then either retired or faded into oblivion or simply died . But era of Pran never ebbed , never receded , never ended . He never went away . From Ashok Kumar to Arshad Warsi , and from Suraiya to Sri Devi , he worked with every star worth his name .

In my earlier blog I have given complete list of his 350 films . Here I am giving list of important films of his career . In the list of Pran Saheb’s important films , there are 144 films . In 1940s there were 6 films . In the 50s 14 films , in the 60s 44 films , in the 70s 51 films , in the 80s 24 films , in the 90s 4 films and even in 2000s there was 1 important film . It is incredible . FromYamla Jat ” [ 1940 ] to ” Kiska Dosh ” [ 2003 ] , it was a 63-year-long journey of excellence and stardom , rather super-stardom .

1940s

  • Yamla Jat (1940)
  • Khajanchi (1941)
  • Khandaan (1942)
  • Ziddi (1948)
  • Grahasti (1948)
  • Badi Bahen (1949)

1950s

1960s

1970s

1980s

1990s

2000s

  • Kiska Dosh (2003)
I am fortunate that out of his above mentioned 144 important films , I have seen 120 films . May be I am missing one or two films . But even 120 is a decent number and it shows my admiration for Pran Saheb .
Pran Saheb is now gone . His billing in the titles of films always used to be ………………………………….and Pran . And even in his death it is there . It is uncanny . In 2011 and 2012 several stalwarts of film world left this world for their final and eternal journey . If you go through the list, it is eerie . It is uncanny . The list will be :
Dev Anand , Shammi Kapoor , Navin Nishchol , Bob Christo , Goga Kapoor , Jagjit Singh , Bhupen Hazarika , Srinivas Khale , Pandit Bhimsen Joshi , Mani Kaul , Surinder Kapoor , Tony Walker , M. F. Husain , Shandar Amrohi , Sachin Bhowmick , Kalpana , Joy Mukherjee , Achla Sachdev , Dara Singh , Rajesh Khanna , A. K. Hangal , Jaspal Bhatti , Ravi , Pandit Ravi Shankar , B. R. Ishara , Yash Chopra ……………………… and PRAN

Phalke Award ……………….. And Pran

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 16 , 2013           00.10 A.M.

I was happy to read the news that Pran Saheb was awarded Dada Saheb Phalke Award 2012 . As a veteran actor , who has worked in more than 400 films , he deserved much better . He should have got the award long back . But Pran Saheb , the gentleman villain of Hindi film industry got it very late . If you count his active years in films , he stands second in the hierarchy . Dev Anand [ Hum Ek Hain – 1946 to Chargesheet – 2011 === 113 films === 65 active years ] . Pran [ Yamla Jat – 1940 to Kiska Dosh – 2003 === 400 films === 63 active years ] . Legendary Ashok Kumar comes third . From [ Jeevan Naiya – 1936 to Aankhon Me Tum Ho – 1997 === 301 films === 61 active years ] . These three are the only Indian actors who can boast of such long and illustrious innings in Hindi films . In seniority he is second and second only to Ashok Kumar . Dilip Kumar , Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor came much later .

I have seen his films and in his films invariably Pran Saheb’s name used to come at the end . He used to be billed as ……………. and Pran . It is uncanny that this happened to him this time also .

If my memory is not failing me , the first movie of Pran Saheb , which I watched was ” Khandan ” [ 1965 ] . It was in Vijay Talkies , Deoria and perhaps the year was 1966 . Same year I watched ” Dil Diya Dard Liya “ and my admiration for Pran Saheb , in the garb of hate , began . Next year I watched ” Ram Aur Shyam ” [ 1967 ] in Pushparaj Talkies , Allahabad and it fortified my admiration for him and since then I am a die-hard fan of this legendary actor .

I may not be running most famous acting school of Mumbai , or most famous acting institute of India or most famous acting class of bollywood or most famous acting academy of world but I think it is my duty to offer my greetings to the legend .

I congratulate Pran Saheb on behalf of all the students and staff of Vidur Acting Institute , which is known as  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters . May God give long and healthy life to the legend called Pran Krishna Sikand , a.k.a. Pran.

Dada Saheb Phalke Award was instituted in 1969 . Till date 43 luminaries have got this prestigious award . Pran Saheb is 44th .

Devika Rani got it in 1969

…………………….. and  Pran in 2012

[ List of his flms is being re-produced from Wikipedia . I express profound gratitude . ]

Joy Mukherjee : Some Sepia – Toned Memories

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 16 , 2012           01.15 A.M.

Joy Mukherjee , a popular actor of yesteryear , mainly 60s , died on March 09 , 2012 in a Mumbai hospital at the age of 73 .

Let me admit in the beginning that I was never a fan of Joy Mukherjee . But I do admit that Joy Mukherjee was one of the successful stars of  Hindi film industry during my school , college and university days . And his death brings to my memory many discussions , many heated arguments with friends , about his position in the film industry , which was dominated by a triumvirate ; Dilip Kumar , Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor .

I have many dog – eared magazines in my Deoria house , which carries articles and photos of Joy Mukherjee . I suddenly remembered some of his silver jubilee hits like ; ” Love In Shimla ” [ 1960 ] ,  ” Hum Hindustani ” [ 1960 ] , ” Ek Musafir Ek Hasina ” [ 1962 ] , ” Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon ” [ 1963 ] , ” Ziddi ” [ 1964 ] , ” Door Ki Awaaz ” [ 1964 ] , ” Bahu Beti ” [ 1965 ] , ” Saaz Aur Awaaz ” [ 1966 ] , ” Love In Tokyo ” [ 1966 ] , ” Shagird ” [ 1967 ] ” Humsaya ” [ 1968 ] , ” Ek Kali Muskai ” [ 1968 ] and ” Ek Bar Muskura Do ” [ 1972 ] .

” Haiwan ” [ 1977 ] was his last film .

Love In Simla

Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon

Ek Musafir Ek Hasina

Ek Musafir Ek Hasina

Some of his films have wonderful songs , which are still popular . Who can forget songs like ;

Aap yun hi agar hamse milte rahe , dekhiye ek din pyaar ho jayega …….. ,

Bahut shukriya hai badi meharbani , meri zindagi men huzur aap aaye ……….

Dil vil pyaar vyaar , main kya janoo re ……………..

O bade miyan deewane , aise na bano …………………..

Wo hain zara khafa khafa ……………………..

Raat ka sama , jhoome chandrama , dil mora nache re jaise bijuria ………..

Ye meri zindagi , ek pagal hawa , aaj idhar , kal udhar …………………

Lakhon hain nigah men , zindagi ki raah men , sanam haseen jawan …………

Banda parwar tham lo jigar , banke pyar phir aaya hoon ………………….

Aanchal men saja dena kaliyan , zulfon men sitare bhar dena ………………

Humdam mere khel na jaano , chahat ke iqarar ko ……………………

Le gayi dil , gudia japan ki , pagal mujhe kar gayee ………………….

Sayonara , sayonara , kal phir aoongi sayonara ………………..

Na tum bewafa ho , na ham bewafa hain ……………………….

Wo haseen dard de do , jise main gale laga loon …………………….

Dil ki awaaz bhi sun , mere fasane pe na jaa …………………….

When his innings as lead actor ended , he produced and directed ” Hum Saya ” [ 1968 ] with himself in the lead . Unfortunately film bombed at the box office . He , later on directed ” Chhaila Babu ” [ 1977 ] and ” Fifty Fifty “ with Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman .

He , in 2009 , also worked in a TV serial ” Ae Dil – E – Nadaan “ .

He was son of Ashok Kumar‘s sister , who was married to producer and studio owner Sashadhar Mukherjee . So Ashok Kumar , Kishore Kumar and Anup Kumar were his maternal uncles .

He belonged to an illustrious family . He had very successful innings as a lead actor . During his hey – days , he was known as Shammi Kapoor of poor producers .

I had privilege to visit his residence at Yari Road during Durga Pooja . I had trained his son , Boy Mukherjee , also , who made his debut with Mala Sinha’s daughter Pratibha . It was an honour to meet him .

It is sad that one more symbol of my younger days is gone . A chapter of my life is finally closed .

[ I started writing this blog immediately after Joy Mukherjee’s death . But I went to Manali on March 18 for Ayan Mukherjee’s film ” Yeh Jwaani Hai Deewani “ and since there was no network in Manali , I could not complete this blog . I could complete it today and posting it . ]

April’s first two releases opened as expected. Third release ” Thank You “ also couldn’t cheer the mood. Fate of the other releases were no better.

Farewell Sachin Bhowmick !

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA              APRIL 16, 2011                    11.55 P.M.

Life is cruel. Sometimes it is very cruel. It was illustrated once more this time. Hindi film industry’s most prolific and one of the most successful and versatile writer, Sachin Bhowmick breathed his last in Mumbai on April 12, 2011 at the age of 80.

In this film world , where it is difficult to survive even for few years, Sachin da , as he was fondly called , survived for more than 50 years and that too successfully. From Nargis , Asha Parekh and Saira Banu to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan , Kajol and Priyanka Chopra and from Balraj Sahni , Shammi Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor to Shah Rukh Khan ,  Hritik Roshan ,and Akshay Kumar ,  he had written story and screenplay for almost everyone. He was virtually a writer of three generations.

He began as a travel writer in 1959 and slowly and gradually stablished himself as a successful story and screenplay writer in Hindi films. He started with Nargis and Balraj Sahni starrer ” Lajwanti ” [ 1958 ]. Who can forget the immortal Asha Bhosle gem ; ……. koi aaya dhadkan kahti hai………..

After this he wrote another memorable hit like ; ” Anuradha ” [ 1961 ] . This Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed film won President’s Gold Medal.

After this it was literally an avalanche of hits and super hit films. ” Ziddi ” [ 1964 ] , ” Ayee Milan Ki Bela ” [ 1964 ] , ” Majboor ” [ 1964 ] , ” Jaanwar ” [ 1965 ] , ” Love In Tokyo ” [ 1966 ] , ” Aaye Din Bahar Ke ” [ 1966 ] , ” An Evening In Paris ” [ 1967 ]  , ” Brahmchari ” [ 1968 ] , ” Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke ” [ 1969 ] , ” Aradhana ” [ 1969 ] , ” Aan Milo Sajna ” [ 1970 ] , ” Carvan ” [ 1971 ] , ” Dost ” [ 1974 ] , ” Khel Khel Men ” [ 1975 ] , ” Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin ” [ 1977 ] , ” Golmaal ” [ 1979 ] , ” Karz ” [ 1980 ] , ” Do Aur Do Paanch ” [ 1980 ] , ” Bemisal ” [ 1982 ] , ” Nastik ” [ 1983 ] , ” Sahab ” [ 1985 ] , ” Karma ” [ 1986 ] , ” Khalnaayak ” [ 1993 ] , ” Main Khiladi Tu Anari ” [ 1994 ] , ” Yeh Dillagi ” [ 1994 ] , ” Karan Arjun ” [ 1995 ] , ” Koyla ” [ 1997 ] , ” Dushman ” [ 1998 ] , ” Soldier ” [ 1998 ] , ” Aa Ab Laut Chalen ” [ 1999 ] , ” Taal ” [ 1999 ] , ” Koi….. He worked with Hrishikesh Mukherjee , Shakti Samanta , Pramod Chakraborty , Bhappi Soni , J . Om Prakash , Nasir Hussain , Subhash Ghai and Rakesh Roshan. Such was his calibre that he was repeated by all the above mentioned film makers several times.

Life is ephemeral. One , however high and mighty, has to go. So Sachin da can’t be an exception. He left us for his final journey. Pen has stopped. Ink has been dry. Nib is broken by the cruel fate. But saga continues. The mortal body of Sachin Bhowmick is gone forever but the immortal films and scripts live on.

Farewell Sachin da ! I was fortunate that I could see you several times when I was training Hritik Roshan and you visited his apartment for story sessions.
