When the Saradha Group’s Bengali daily Sakalbela began publication, Mamata Banerjee sent her best wishes. It was more than a customary greeting. It was an impassioned message that seemed to have come from the chief minister’s heart. (Also read: SEBI digs deeper, chit scam gets bigger )

“We will have to pass the dark night to begin our journey in the light of dawn,” she said. “An alert conscience, right direction, truth and fearless news is what people like. Today, many papers have deviated from that principle, and news has assumed personal and commercial dimensions. Let Sakalbela fulfill the people’s aspirations.”

In his 18-page letter to the CBI, Saradha group CMD Sudipta Sen named two Trinamool Congress MPs who he alleged had “blackmailed” him, “forced” him to buy several publications that formed the once formidable bouquet of the group’s media businesses.

TMC leaders including Mamata have consistently denied or downplayed the party’s links with Sen and Saradha. But mounting evidence suggests that the TMC, and its ministers and leaders, had been working closely with the company even before coming to power in Kolkata.

The relationship only grew deeper with time. Evidence of patronage from the Trinamool — for Saradha and other chit fund companies who raised money from poor investors — formed the basis for the plea for a CBI inquiry in a PIL that came up for hearing in Calcutta High Court on Thursday.

* On her maiden visit to Junglemahal after assuming office in July 2011, Mamata took along some “presents” for the people: seven well-equipped ambulances fitted out with critical care units, 50 motorbikes, 1,050 bicycles. All were donated by the Saradha Group.

A Saradha executive called Manoj Nagel is learnt to have told police that these ambulances were later used to ferry “heaps” of cash collected from investors in East and West Midnapore to the company’s head office at Midland Park in Salt Lake, Kolkata.

Asked about these “gifts” recently, Mamata said: “We accepted the charity on good faith, and did not know that these were from ill-gotten money.”

* Around the same time, Mamata donated six trauma care ambulances to Kolkata Police. The vehicles were said to have been bought by the Saradha Group.

* Saradha Realty Private Ltd, the group’s real estate wing, raised money on the promise of ambitious 19-storey residential towers in Contai, East Midnapore. But local municipality rules did not allow more than 14 storeys. So Saradha, with its “deep” reach in the Trinamool government, got the plan sanctioned by the urban development department in Kolkata as a “special case”, a top TMC source said. The project has not started, and investors have ransacked its offices.

* Trinamool sources confirmed that Saradha CMD Sudipta Sen, as a gesture of goodwill, regularly bought Mamata’s paintings. According to one estimate, the group spent over Rs 1.86 crore on the paintings. The group was also a major donor to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

* Somnath Dutta, a vice-president of Saradha Printing and Publishing Pvt Ltd who is now being questioned by police, was seen with TMC MP and actress Shatabdi Roy during her Lok Sabha campaign in Birbhum. Trinamool sources said Saradha contributed heavily to Roy’s campaign, including paying for vehicles and hotels. Dutta declined to comment on the matter.

* In 2009, after the Trinamool’s success in the Lok Sabha elections, Madan Mitra, now the state sports minister, was seen on stage with Sudipta Sen. Sen had just purchased land to build a temple “as grand as Akshardham” in Bishnupur in South 24-Parganas, and Mitra, then MLA from Bishnupur West, showered his blessings on him.

“We are all one family,” Mitra said. “I pray that you grow so big that your next programme is at (Kolkata’s) Salt Lake Stadium where huge numbers of spectators can be accommodated.”

Contacted after Saradha went bust, Mitra said: “I went because I was invited (to the function). I went to also speak with workers. The group had constructed hospitals and resorts in the area. I was offered the post of president of the union, and I accepted because it was a union of investors.”

* At the end of August 2011, football superstar Lionel Messi visited Kolkata for a friendly. Madan Mitra was one of the key organisers of the event. The Saradha Group donated several crore for the match that failed to attract enough sponsors. Asked for a comment, Mitra said: “The match was organized by an event management group. It was not a government event, so it does not matter who funded it.”

On behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , I denounce Derek O’ Brien and his party’s parochial and dictatorial attitude. Shri Narendra Modi has not been found guilty of any crime by SIT appointed by honourable Supreme Court. Instead of calling Modi “butcher of Gujarat…..” , Mamata Banerjee should come clean on Saradha Chit Fund Scam.

West Bengal Needs Mamata Banerjee

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 06 , 2013           11.40 P.M.

It is hard to defend a death . It is difficult not to sympathise with the grieving family of a 23 year – old boy Sudipto Gupta . It is suicidal to swim against the tide . It is politically wrong to support a government , which is accused by one and all , for murdering a young boy . But still there is a case in favour of Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress . Before getting swayed away by the orchestrated public outcry , before being inundated by the flood of tears of cunning comrades , pause for a moment and think properly .

English: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Baner...

The dead boy belonged to SFI [ Student Federation of India ] . This so called youth organization is affiliated to CPI-M [ Communist Party of India – Marxist ] . And it is prudent to recall that CPI-M ruled West Bengal for almost 4 decades . And then came Mamata Banerjee and she single-handedly defeated the mighty ,  invincible comrades . And the comrades are not supposed to give up power easily and willingly. Comrades are desperate to dislodge Mamata Banerjee since then .

Every politician can falter . May be Mamata Banerjee made some mistakes . But she is an elected Chief Minister of West Bengal . She should be allowed to rule for 5 years and that too peacefully. CPI-M should understand this , and if they are not willing to understand then they should be forced to see the writing on the wall . It should be drilled into their dark , empty heads .

I am forced to remember happenings from the day one , when Mamata Banerjee took charge of West Bengal . She went to inspect a hospital and the doctor on duty questioned her presence in the hospital . Is it not proper for an elected Chief Minister of a state to visit a hospital ? Should a people’s representative seek doctor’s permission before visiting a hospital ? The answer is a definite no . But CPI-M , through their committed card-holder members , wanted to show the world that Mamta Bannerjee is a persona – non – grata in her own state .

They , forgetting their own blood-drenched past , are now shedding copious tears on national television after Sudipto Gupta’s death . I could feel a sense of glee in the hearts of comrades . Apparently Sitaram Yechuri was showing grief at the demise of SFI member but he seemed to be quite pleased that at least now they have got a stick to beat the formidable foe .

Their selective amnesia should be brought in the public view . Comrades are adept in annihilating their political opponents . They have killed thousands of RSS [ Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ] workers in Kerala . They have brutally murdered their political opponents in West Bengal . Ask any CPI-M deserters . They will tell you the gruesome story . In the hinterlands of West Bengal , comrades used to hang a white sari in front of the house of the person , who voted or even participated in the political activities of opposition parties . White sari symbolised the impending widowhood to the wife of the deserter .

National media knows everything but they are myopic and inadvertently helping CPI-M . And shrewd comrades are exploiting the situation and enjoying the moment . They are shedding copious tears on the national television but in the privacy of their offices they must be having orgasm . At least no one can support West Bengal government of Mamata Banerjee on this point .

Death is sad . Death of a young man is shattering for the family . But may I ask why these comrades are on rampage since their defeat in West Bengal ? Why the comrades are not willing to wait for 5 years ? If their commitment for democracy is so unflinching , they should wait for the next general election . They should desist from unleashing their cadres on the streets and on police . When they were ruling West Bengal , it is alleged that they tried to annihilate Mamata Banerjee . They insulted her . They dragged her on the streets by catching hold of her hair . But a hypocrite like Sitaram Yetury , who is shedding tears now , was silent then . Even late Jyoti Basu , who is considered a BHADROLOK [ gentlemen ] by the media , remained a passive and silent onlooker like the mythological Dhritarashtra .

Jyoti Basu (8 July 1914 – 17 January 2010) or ...

Jyoti Basu (8 July 1914 – 17 January 2010) or Jyotirindra Basu was an Indian politician belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from West Bengal, India. He served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister of any Indian state. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I am not from Bengal . I can’t be accused of having any personal interest in the politics of Mamata Banerjee . I am not going to gain anything by supporting her and that too at this juncture . But I know the cunning comrades . I just felt that even at this juncture India and the discerning public should know the truth and they should not be swayed away by temporary and fluid situations and emotions . It would be fatal to play in the hands of comrades . These murderers are waiting for the opportunity and we should not do anything to help them . Their dream of ruling India is shattered . Their secret wish to paint India red lies in shambles . Any effort to demonize Mamata Banerjee would be like inviting the killers in our house .

A dream never fulfilled

A dream never fulfilled (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I feel for the family of the dead boy . I sympathise with the near and dear ones . But I refuse to criticize Mamata Banerjee for this death . Because I also remember the killings and annihilation of political opponents done by the communists of India .

Police claims that Sudipto Gupta died because of accident . Comrades are crying foul . You should remember ACP Dhoble of Mumbai police . He was accused of murdering a hawker in Mumbai and was subsequently transferred . Now it is known to all after enquiry that the hawker died of cardiac arrest . What if same case is repeated in Kolkata ? Think and think properly .

Famous acting schools of Mumbai , famous acting institutes of India and the famous acting academy of bollywood have no time for such topics . My acting institute  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  think that apart from imparting acting training , it is also our duty to make our students aware of such happenings .

Mamata Banerjee supporters

West Bengal needs Mamata Banerjee . In fact the nation needs her . And yes , we don’t need CPI-M or CPI at all . They should be consigned in the trash-bins of history .

Left is Left Out in West Bengal

DEORIA – UTTAR PRADESH – INDIA                   JUNE 03 , 2011                    02. 00 P. M.

On May 13 , 2011 when I was following election results of Assam , West Bengal , Tamil Nadu , Kerala and Puducherry , I was particularly curious to know West Bengal results. Tamil Nadu and Kerala have habit of voting against the incumbents and bringing in the opposition in every election. So I was pretty sure about the outcome. Though I was curious to know the fate of Assam and Union Territory of Puducherry also ,  but West Bengal was unique.

States Where Assembly elections were Held in 2011

States Where Assembly elections were Held in 2011

Communists were ruling West Bengal since 1977  and it was an uphill task for Trinamool Congress or any other party or dispensation to dislodge them. monolithic organization of Communists was invincible and impregnable for 34 years and even Mamata Banerjee failed several times to dislodge them.World’s first ever democratically elected Communist government was headed by E. M. Shankaran Namboodiripad in Kerala in 1957. It was dismissed in 1959 by Congress in autocratic way. So Communist Party of India [ CPI ] has this unique and dubious distinction of being the first democratically elected Communist government of the world and the first one too , to get dismissed by centre under article 356 of the constitution.

In 1967 , in the days of governments of Samyukta Vidhayak Dal [ SVD ] , a SVD government was formed in West Bengal with Communist Party of India [ CPI ]  as junior partner. Ajoy Mukherjee of Bangla Congress was the Chief Minister and CPI leader Jyoti Basu was his deputy. This one was the first ever non-Congress government of the state. E. M. Shankaran Namboodiripad again became the Chief Minister of Kerala during that period. This SVD government of West Bengal was short-lived as it was again dismissed by Congress government of centre. Left lost the 1972 assembly election, which was alleged to be heavily rigged by Congress. Siddharth Shankar Ray formed the illegal , immoral and last government of the Indian National Congress. Then came infamous emergency. In the 1977 election Congress lost power in centre as well as in West Bengal and many other northern states. Communist Party of India – Marxist [ CPI – M ] , an off-shoot of old Communist Party of India [ CPI ] came to power. It , along with its allies : CPI , All India Forward Bloc [ AIFB ] and Revolutionary Socialist Party [ RSP ] formed Left Front and ruled West Bengal since then. Jyoti Basu began his 23 – year-long stint as Chief Minister of West Bengal. He left office in 2000 and Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee took from him and ruled till now.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee

Apart from the rise and fall of Left Front, this 2011 election also signifies struggle and dogged fight of Mamata Banerjee. Born on January 05 , 1955 , she is M. A. in Islamic History from Calcutta University. She has a degree in education as well as a law degree. She joined Congress in 1970 and in 1984 became one of India’s youngest parliamentarian ever. She defeated Somnath Chatterjee from Jadavpur , who was considered invincible till then. Same year she became general-secretary of All India Youth Congress. In 1991 she became minister of state HRD in Narsimha Rao government. She quit Congress in 1997 and floated All India Trinamool Congress. In 1999 she joined Atal Bihari Vajpayee led NDA government and became railway minister. Later on she quit NDA government and fought 2001 assembly election with Congress and lost. In the assembly election of 2006 Trinamool was mauled badly. Then came Singur agitation against Tata car factory , which catapulted her to political stardom. Single-handedly she drove Tata out of Singur and for the first time Left Front was forced to backtrack and was compelled to renege the decision. Her struggle paid rich dividends in 2009 Parliament polls and she became railway minister again. In 2010 she won West Bengal civic poll and finally in 2011 trounced Left Front.

On May  20 , 2011 as she was appointed Chief Minister of West Bengal , she became the 11th Chief Minister of West Bengal and the first woman CM of the state and 14th woman CM of India. Only 13 women were Chief Ministers before. Sucheta Kripalani was the first woman Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and first Indian woman to hold this post. Sucheta Kripalani of Uttar Pradesh was followed by Nandini Satpathy in Odisha, Shashikala Kakodkar in Goa, Syeda Anowara Taimur in Assam, Janaki Ramachandran in Tamil Nadu, J. Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu, Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal in Punjab, Rabri Devi in Bihar, Sushma Swaraj in Delhi, Sheila Dikshit in Delhi, Uma Bharti in Madhya Pradesh and Vasundhara Raje in Rajasthan. Now Mamata Banerjee becomes 14th woman Chief Minister in India and the 1st one in West Bengal.

It is not an ordinary victory. In my opinion it is beginning of the end of Left Front . Mamta Banerjee rightly called it as a second independence day. This sentiment was echoed throughout West Bengal. Industry was neglected during Left Front rule. Contrary to popular belief, 34 year Left Front  rule had ruined West Bengal. Statistics reflect the real picture. Flight of the industry from the state is a familiar story. West Bengal is a laggard in every aspect. By 2007 – 2008 the share of manufacturing in the state’s net domestic product has fallen to 7.4% compared to 13.6% in neighbouring Odisha. After flight of capital , flight of educated youngsters started and they left in drove. A deplorable policy of doing away of English as medium of education for several years also added to the woes of bright youngsters and degeneration of education began. Plight of education and health were more glaring , though as per popular perception Communists were supposed to have maximum effect on these two fronts. The number of hospital beds per one lakh people in rural Bengal is 3.8 as compared to an all-India average of 17.5 . In education , the drop out rate of students is over 75% compared to an all-India average of 60% . Left Front repeatedly won the election on the promise of land reforms. Operation Barga was quite successful and paid them rich dividends. But to attract industry , Left Front alienated same vote bank of theirs by planning industrial projects on agricultural lands and that too without working out adequate compensation. Singur and Nandigram became their nemisis. Mamata gained ground by championing their cause.

On the day of counting , when results were pouring in and victory of Mamata Banerjee became almost certain , I was reminded of two incidents of her life. On August 16 , 1990 she was brutally assaulted by Lalu Alam, a goon supported by CPI – M. She suffered severe head injuries but was saved. Again in 1992, when trying to meet Jyoti Basu , the then Chief Minister, she was dragged by the hair along the corridors of Writers’ Building and was taken to Lalbazar. She returned to Writers’ Building only after winning the elections. Life has come to full circle for her. Maa , Maati , Maanush have won and with this victory ends the dream of Communists to paint India red.
