150th Birthday of ROSOGOLLA

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           December 31, 2018           05.45 P.M.

It is 150th year of Mahatma Gandhi.

But few people know that it is 150th year of a Bengali sweet known and called ” ROSOGOLLA ” also.

Rosogolla

But here lies the controversy. Rosogolla is always known as a Bengali sweet. But all of a sudden Odisha started claiming that Rosogolla is Odia.

I was perplex. For all my life I always knew and believed that Rosogolla is a Bengali sweet . Nobin Chandra Das , the famous Bengali , is credited to invent this sweet in 1868 . He , along with his family , used to live in the Baghbazar locality of northern Calcutta [ now known as Kolkata ] .

Columbus of Rosogolla – Nobin Chandra Das

Despite these known facts , some Odia zealots started claiming that Rosogoll has Odia origins. Watch the photos and realize that Bengalis have not only invented this sweet but they have become connoisseurs and gave several variations to Rosogolla, which is not common in Odisha .

Nolen Gurer Rosogolla

Khejur Gurer Rosogolla

Dry Rosogolla

Coloured Rosogolla

Creamy Baked Rosogolla

Chocolate Rosogolla

Payesh Rosogolla

This brazen and bizarre claim of Odisha was not supposed to be taken lightly in West Bengal . Matter was fiercely debated in Bengal and finally West Bengal government reached GI [ Geographical Indication ] . After a 26-month legal tussle, West Bengal government won the case on November 14, 2017 .

In 2018 Rosogolla became 150 years old and to commemorate the auspicious event West Bengal government issued a special stamp . It was launched at the inaugural function of ” Baghbazar-O-Rosogolla Utsab ” .

Earlier this year, the State government observed November 14 as Rosogolla Day to mark one year of obtaining the GI tag.

My tryst with Rosogolla in particular and other Bengali sweet in general started very early in my life . In my Deoria house , there was a shop of Bengali sweets , known as Jalojog . I tasted Rosogolla once and became a life-long fan and now I can proudly claim that I am a Rosogolla connoisseur . So I refused to believe that Rosogolla is in any way related to Odisha .

I am happy that finally this unnecessary controversy will be put to rest. Odisha has many good things to offer but Rosogolla is quintessential Bengali and it should remain so.

I have taken some facts and figures from Sunday edition of DNA – Daily News & Analysis , a popular news paper. Pictures of various Rosogollas have been taken from Wikipedia .

I express gratitude on behalf of all the students & staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , VIDUR Editing Studio , VIDUR Club and VIDUR Merchandise .

Vidur Acting Institute Spreads Across India …… Almost !!

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MARCH 27, 2016           08.25 P.M.

Vidur Acting Institute Spreads Across India …….. Almost!! Is it narcissistic? Is it megalomania? Some will yell, yes! But here are the reason and facts.

Few days back, I was posting a greeting for the people of Mizoram on the occasion of Chapchar Kut. I always write, ” To all my students, friends & well-wishers ……. ” I suddenly realised that I have yet to get an acting student from Mizoram. I started counting. Then I realised that apart from Mizoram, I don’t have any student from Arunachal Pradesh either.

Political Map of India

Political Map of India

At this point of time there are 29 states in the Republic of India. They are : ANDHRA PRADESH //  ARUNACHAL PRADESH // ASSAM // BIHAR // CHHATTISGARH // GOA // GUJARAT // HARYANA // HIMACHAL PRADESH // JAMMU & KASHMIR // JHARKHAND // KARNATAKA // KERALA // MADHYA PRADESH // MAHARASHTRA // MANIPUR // MEGHALAYA // MIZORAM // NAGALAND // ODISHA // PUNJAB // RAJASTHAN // SIKKIM // TAMIL NADU // TELANGANA // TRIPURA // UTTAR PRADESH // UTTARAKHAND // WEST BENGAL

Out of 29 states of India, I have got and trained students from 27 states.  Only 2 states; ARUNACHAL PRADESH & MIZORAM are still out of my reach.

ONLY TWO [ 02 ] out of TWENTY NINE [ 29 ] !!

Therefore I titled the blog – “Vidur Acting Institute Spreads Across India …… Almost!!”

Location of Arunachal Pradesh in the Map of India

ARUNACHAL PRADESH, one of the twenty-nine states of the Republic of India , borders Assam and Nagaland to the south, and shares international borders with Bhutan in the west, Burma in the east and Tibet in the north. Itanagar is the capital of the state.

Formerly called the North-East Frontier Agency, [ NEFA ] , was ceded to Britain by the Tibetan government with the Simla Accord (1914).

NEFA was renamed as Arunachal Pradesh on 20 January 1972 and it became a Union Territory. Arunachal Pradesh became a state on 20 February 1987.

MIZORAM is one of the 8 states of Northeast India, with Aizawl as its capital. It is the southern most landlocked state sharing borders with three of the Eight sister states, namely Tripura, Assam, Manipur. The state also shares a 722 kilometer border with the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Like several other northeastern states of India, Mizoram was previously part of Assam until 1972, when it was carved out as a Union Territory. It became the 23rd state of India on 20 February 1987.

Apart from 2 above mentioned states, I have yet to get students from 3 Union Territories. They are : DADRA & NAGAR HAVELI // DAMAN & DIU // LAKSHADWEEP

At this point of time there are 7 Union Territories in the  Republic of India. They are : ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS // CHANDIGARH // DADRA & NAGAR HAVELI // DAMAN & DIU // LAKSHADWEEP // NCR DELHI // PUDUCHERRY

I have trained actors from 4 of the 7 UTs. Only 3 remain. They are; DADRA & NAGAR HAVELI // DAMAN & DIU // LAKSHADWEEP

ONLY THREE [ 03 ] out of SEVEN [ 07 ] !!

DAMAN & DIU : For over 450 years, the coastal enclaves of Daman (Portuguese: Damão) and Diu on the Arabian Sea coast were part of Portuguese India, along with Goa and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Goa, Daman and Diu were incorporated into the Republic of India on December 19, 1961, by military conquest. Portugal did not recognise the Indian annexation of these territories until 1974.

The territory of “Goa, Daman and Diu” was administered as a single union territory until 1987. Then Goa was granted statehood, leaving Daman and Diu as a separate union territory.

DADRA & NAGAR HAVELI is a Union Territory in Western India. Nagar Haveli is wedged between Maharashtra and Gujarat, whereas Dadra is an enclave surrounded by Gujarat. The shared capital is Silvassa.

Maghval is a small enclave village belonging to Gujarat that is located within Nagar Haveli, just south of Silvassa in Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The Portuguese occupied Nagar Haveli on 10 June 1783 on the basis of Friendship Treaty executed on 17 December 1779 as compensation towards damage to the Portuguese frigate by Maratha Navy. Then, in 1785 the Portuguese purchased Dadra.

Under the Portuguese rule or the Estado da Índia (Portuguese State of India) Dadra & Nagar Haveli formed a single concelho (municipality), named “Nagar Haveli”, with its head in Darará until 1885 and, after that, with its head in the town of Silvassa.

After India attained Independence in 1947, the residents of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, with the help of volunteers of organisations, subtracted the territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli from Portuguese India in 1954.

In 1961 when Indian forces took over Goa, Daman, and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli was also merged with the Republic of India.

On 31 December 1974 a treaty was signed between India and Portugal on recognition of India’s sovereignty over Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Location of Lakshadweep in the Map of India

Location of Lakshadweep in the Map of India

LAKSHADWEEP : formerly known as the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Aminidivi Islands is a group of islands in the Laccadive Sea, 200 to 440 kilometres off the south-western coast of India. The archipelago is a Union Territory and is governed by the Union Government of India. The islands form the smallest Union Territory of India: their total surface area is just 32 km2 (12 sq mi). Kavaratti serves as the capital of the Union Territory and the region comes under the jurisdiction of Kerala High Court.

In the 16th century the Portuguese took control of the archipelago but the islanders expelled them in 1545. In the 17th century, the islands came under the rule of Ali Rajahs /Arakkal Bheevi of Kannur, who received them as a gift from the Kolathiris.

The Aminidivi group of islands (Androth, Amini, Kadmat, Kiltan, Chetlath and Bitra) came under the rule of Tipu Sultan in 1787. They passed to British control after the Third Anglo-Mysore War and were attached to South Canara. The rest of the islands came under the suzerainty of the Arakkal family of Cannanore in return for a payment of annual tribute. The British took over the administration of those islands for non-payment of arrears. These islands were attached to the Malabar district of the Madras Presidency during the British Raj.

In 1956, during the reorganization of Indian states, the Lakshadweep islands were organized into a separate union territory for administrative purposes.

It is a proud moment for me. It is very satisfying for any acting institute. I feel blessed that out of 36 states and Union Territories of my country, I have trained students from 31. Only 05 still remain out of my reach.

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 14 , 2013           10.40 P.M.

As the scene is becoming interesting , as the water is becoming muddy , as the temperature is rising menacingly , as the players are getting ready for a fight to finish , as leaders are being chosen to lead  , as the respective armies are getting ready to wager their lives , as the country is getting ready for a spectacular drama , as the world is watching with anxiety , let us start looking at the current scenario in our country.

Lok Sabh or parliamentary election is due in 2014 . But preparation has already started . Over the years I have watched that media ; print and electronic both – proffer some fascinating observations . Some of it becomes reality and some fail miserably . In recent times comments are being made on various social media sites also . Anonymous netizens are posting their views on micro -blogging sites and are making the scene murkier . Already precarious political scenario is becoming more unpredictable .

I will try to save all  the poll related writings till the election results are out in 2014 . It would be very interesting to read all these articles after the results are out .

  16. MP that pulled itself quietly out from Bimaru status, is on fastest pace. It’s CM is not making as much fuss as Bimaar Bihar CM is making

Till 2014 I will keep on writing blogs and sometimes will re-produce interesting stories from various social networking sites . And will keep on doing this till Election 2014 is over . I feel that VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as ,  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , is not only an acting institute , it also has some social and national duties and obligations .

I may not be running the most famous acting school of Mumbai , or the most famous acting institute of India , or the most famous acting academy of bollywood , or the most famous acting institute of the world , I may be small and very insignificant , but I thought it proper to offer my views on this important matter .

[ This blog is not entirely written by me . I have re-produced relevant tweets from the twitter-handle of Shri Raghunath AS . I am indebted and express my gratitude .]

Longest Serving Chief Ministers of India

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 30 , 2012           11.57 P.M.

After Narendra Modi‘s emphatic and 3rd consecutive electoral victory in 2012 Gujarat assembly elections , I came across a very startling fact through news papers . Times of India reported that including Narendra Modi , at present we have 6 serving Chief Ministers in various states of India , who have won 3 consecutive terms .

Corrected few errors.

Map of India (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Here is the list of 6 serving Chief Ministers , who have won 3 consecutive terms .

1 – Sheila Dikshit = Delhi – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 1998 – to date ]

2 – Manik Sarkar = Tripura – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 1998 – to date ]

3 – Naveen Patnaik = Odisha – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 2000 – to date ]

4 – Tarun Gogoi = Assam – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 2001 – to date ]

5 – Okram Ibobi Singh = Manipur – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 2002 – to date ]

&

6 – Narendra Modi = Gujarat – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 2002 – to date ]

It is very interesting to note that out of these 6 Chief Ministers ; 3 belong to Congress [ Indian National Congress ] , and 1 each to CPM [ Communist Party of India – Marxist ] , BJD [ Biju Janata Dal ] & BJP [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] .

Till date , there are only 13 Chief Ministers , who could win 3 or more than 3 terms consecutively . Here is the list :

1 – Jyoti Basu = West Bengal – 5 Consecutive Terms [ 1977 – 2000 ]

2 – Mohanlal Sukhadia = Rajasthan – 4 Consecutive Terms [ 1954 – 1971 ]

3 – Gegong Apang = Arunachal Pradesh – 4 Consecutive Terms [ 1980 – 1999 ]

4 – B. C. Roy = West Bengal – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 1948 – 1962 ]

5 – K. Kamaraj = Tamil Nadu – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 1954 – 1963 ]

6 – Vasantrao Naik = Maharashtra – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 1963 – 1975 ]

7 – M.G. Ramachandran = Tamil Nadu – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 1977 – 1987 ]

8 – Sheila Dikshit = Delhi – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 1998 – to date ]

9 – Manik Sarkar = Tripura – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 1998 – to date ]

10 – Naveen Patnaik = Odisha – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 2000 – to date ]

11 – Tarun Gogoi = Assam – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 2001 – to date ]

12 – Okram Ibobi Singh = Manipur – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 2002 – to date ]

&

13 – Narendra Modi = Gujarat – 3 Consecutive Terms [ 2002 – to date ]

If you dissect the list further , out of these 13 Chief Ministers ; 8 belong to Congress [ Indian National Congress ] , 2 belong to CPM [ Communist Party of India – Marxist ] and 1 each to AIADMK [ All India Anna Dravid Munnetra Kazhagam ] , BJD [ Biju Janata Dal ] and BJP [ Bharatiya Janata Party ] .

I think in next assembly elections due in 2013 , this scenario is definitely going to change . 2 more BJP Chief Ministers are poised to win their 3rd consecutive term . They are , Shivraj Singh Chauhan and Raman Singh , the Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh respectively .

2013 assembly elections are going to unfold interesting chapter in the history of India .

It would be an interesting political story to share with my acting students of my acting institute  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters .

150 Years of First Christian Saint of India

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JUNE 11. 2012           02.00 A.M.

Read a very small news item in the June 09 , 2012 issue of Times of India . It was about St. Gonsalo Garcia , a Christian missionary of Indian origin , who is also the first saint of Indian origin . He was crucified in Japan for propagating Christianity .

It was very shocking to say the least . While reading about St. Gomsalo Garcia , I remember a very tragic and sad case of a Christian missionary Graham Staines , who was murdered , while working in Odisha province of India .

In 1999 , an Australian Christian missionary Graham Staines was burnt alive along with his two sons Timothy [ aged 9 ] and Philip [ aged 7 ] , while they were sleeping in his station wagon at Manoharpur village in Keonjhar district in Odisha . This was an unfortunate incident and a blot on the SARVA DHARMA SAMABHAV [ All Religions Are Equal ] credentials of India . No sane person can justify communal violence of any kind . Every one condemned the incident and appealed for peace and immediate halt of attacks against Christians . But seculars and left – liberal intellectuals pounced on right – wingers and nationalists for the gruesome murder . They still throw venom on nationalist forces for gruesome Graham Staines murder . Though they conveniently forget about Swami Lakshmanananda’s murder .

English: Graham Staines and family

Graham Staines and family (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

In their eagerness and zeal to condemn the nationalist forces , these seculars and left – liberals forget that Dara Singh was convicted in 2009 for leading the rampaging mob against Christians . In 2011 the Supreme Court of India upheld life imprisonment for Dara Singh . Justice prevailed , rule of law upheld and in a predominantly Hindu nation , Gaham Staines , an Australian Christian missionary got justice .

While reading the article of Times of India , I was pained that St.Gonsalo Garcia was crucified in Japan in 1597 . Seculars and left – liberals are not that vociferous in condemnation in this case as they are in the case of India . Why Japan is not condemned the way India is always condemned for the communal violence ?

Gonsalo Garcia was born in Gass village of Vasai , Mumbai in 1557 . At that time Vasai was under Portuguese rule and was known as Bassein . Since childhood , Gonsalo had a strong desire to become a Jesuit priest . At the age of 15 , he came in contact with another Jesuit priest Sebastio Gonsalves and went to Japan and worked in his mission . For a brief period he moved to Philippines but later on returned to Japan , joined Franciscan order and started preaching Christianity .

Local Buddhist monks got envious and they forced the Japanese authorities to arrest all Christian missionaries including Gonsalo Garcia . They were sentenced to death and crucified on a hill in Nagasaki on February 05 , 1597 .

In Christian world they are known as ” Nagasaki Martyrs ” . On June 08 , 1862 Pope Pius IX declared them saints . Christians of Mumbai are celebrating 150 years of canonization of St . Gonsalo Garcia this year .

When anti Christian riots happened in some parts of India , specially in Odisha , seculars and left – liberal intellectuals lambasted nationalists and right – wingers .Why are they silent in this case . Though the incident happened in 1597 but it did  happen . And it is against all the accepted norms of secular society .

I , at least , deeply condemn the brutal murder of St. Gonsalo Garcia and hail the judicial system of my country . Graham Staines and his two sons got justice and Dara Singh is languishing in prison for his crime .

India : Politics In The Name of Names

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA             AUGUST 24 , 2011             11  . 15  A. M.

Last week there was news that all the parties of West Bengal unanimously decided to change the name of the state to Paschim Banga .Very soon West Bengal will be known as Paschim Banga. Mamta Banerjee promised to go for a new nomenclature , when she came to power . It goes to her credit that she fulfilled her promise very soon and all the parties of the state agreed and supported the new name . Very soon Paschim Banga will be a reality. But it is not the first time that a state is being renamed. 5 provinces , 2 Union territories  and 70 cities have already been renamed and a proposal to change Orissa’s name is pending before the Parliament.

Political Map of India

Political Map of India

Let us go through the list of Provinces :

1 – Travancore – Cochin is now known as Kerala . [ Name Changed in 1956 ]

2 – Madhya Bharat is now known as Madhya Pradesh . [ Name Changed in 1959]

3 – Madras is now known as Tamil Nadu . [ Name Changed in 1969 ]

4 – Mysore is now known as Karnataka . [ Name Changed in 1973 ]

5 – Uttaranchal is now known as Uttarakhand . [ Name Changed in 2007 ]

There are  proposals for the name change of the 4 Provinces  :

1 – Orissa  – New Name  Odisha . [ Proposed in 2011 ]

2 – West Bengal – New Name  Paschim Banga . [ Proposed in 2011 ]

3 – Kerala , which got its name changed from Travancore – Cochin , wants now to be known as Keralam . [ Still a Wish ]

4 – Assam – New Name  Asom . [ Still a Wish ]

List of Union Territories, which were renamed  :

1 – Laccadivi, Minikoy & Amindivi Islands   –  New Name Lakshadweep . [ Name Changed in 1973 ]

2 – Pondicherry – New Name Puducherry . [  Name Changed in 2006 ]

Map of India showing location of West Bengal

Map of India showing location of West Bengal

So 5 states and 2 Union Territories of India have been renamed . Two states have concrete proposals for the name change and proposals for Kerala  and Assam, are still in nascent stages.

Apart from above mentioned 9 provinces , and 2 Union Territories  there are 70  Indian cities , which have gone through the name change.

Major cities that have been renamed after independence include:

Andhra Pradesh

Assam

  • Nowgong to Nagaon
  • Gauhati to Guwahati (change effective 1983)
  • Sibsagar to Sivasagar

Gujarat

Himachal Pradesh

Kerala

Madhya Pradesh

Maharashtra

Puducherry

  • Pondicherry to Puducherry (change effective from 1 October 2006)
  • Yanaon to Yanam (change effective from merger with Indian Union)

Punjab

Tamil Nadu

Uttar Pradesh

  • Cawnpore to Kanpur (change effective 1948)
  • Benares to Varanasi (change effective 1956)

West Bengal

  • Calcutta to Kolkata (change effective from 1 January 2001)
  • Burdwan to Bardhaman

Name change proposal for 9 other Indian cities are there but they allude consensus . They are :

1 – Ahmedabad  – Proposed Name  – Karnavati

2 – Allahabad – Prposed Name  – Prayag or Teerth Raj Prayag

3 – Aurangabad  – Proposed Name  – Sambhajinagar

4 – Patna  – Proposed Name –  Pataliputra

5 – Mysore  – Proposed Name –  Mysooru

6 – Mangalore  – Proposed Name –  Mangaluru

7 – Bangalore – Proposed Name – Bengaluru

8 – Bhopal  – Proposed Name –  Bhojpal

9 – Hyderabad  – Proposed Name –  Bhagya Nagaram

Above mentioned 9 cities have long pending demands for name change , but since it requires Union Cabinet and Parliament’s approval , and at present they are controlled by the Congress , so chances are bleak for the renaming because there is no consensus for the new names of the above mentioned cities.

I fail to understand the logic. If names of 5 states , 2 Union Territories and 70 cities could be changed and 2 more states are on the verge of being renamed , then why to deny above mentioned 9 cities the same right ? Is it because  proposal for the name change for these 9 cities came from BJP or Shiv Sena or other opposition parties ? Or because proposed names of these 9 cities bear the ethos of our age – old tradition and ageless culture ? Or because they are being opposed by some so – called secular parties and intellectuals of left leaning ? Or fear of vote bank politics is stalling the renaming ?

If it is so , it is sad , very , very sad !!
