Death of a Blogger in Bangla Desh

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           FEBRUARY24 , 2013           11.00 P.M.

Indian subcontinent seems to be in turmoil these days . Pakistan is perennially unstable and is always on the brink and now Bangla Desh also seems to be stirred and shaken . The latest target in both the countries are social networking activists .

Barely few months back in October 2012 , Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan was shot in the head by the Talibans . Now she is out of the hospital but still faces the threat . She is an avid blogger and posts her thoughts regularly . Her crime was that she wanted to pursue studies and was voicing her views through her blog .

And now the news come from Bangla Desh . A blogger , Ahmed Rajib Haider , is hacked to death allegedly by Jamaat – E – Islami fundamentalists . His only fault is that he is also a blogger and through his blogs he was raising voice against rising fangs of Islamic fundamentalism in secular Bangla Desh . His another crime according to jamaat – E – Islami clerics is that he proclaimed through his blog that he is an atheist . Majority of Bangladeshis think that hacking of Ahmed Rajib Haider is the handiwork of Jamaat – Shibir , the youth wing of the Jamaat – E – Islami .

Bangla Desh is in turmoil since long . People are up in arms for the justice of the victims of 1971 Liberation War .What is now known as Shahbagh demonstration , almost 500 people gathered on February 05 , 2013 to protest against the life sentence to Jamaat leader and accuse of 1971 war criminal Abdul Qader Mollah . They were demanding death sentence for Mollah . In Bangla Desh it is widely and universally believed that Jamaat actively helped Pakistan army during the 1971 war of independence .

February 05 , 2013 Shahbagh Demonstration was organised through facebook and other social media . Youngsters who were apolitical earlier , are now actively participating in demonstrations and voicing their views . Social networking sites have given them an easy tool in hand . Clamour for punishing Jamaat for their alleged crime during 1971 war of independence are growing . So naturally Jamaat , to save their skin , is trying to term these activists as anti – Islamic and atheists .

So they first attacked a blogger Asif Mohiuddin . He was stabbed but he survived . Now Haider becomes the second victim of attack and he died .

It is very unfortunate . If Jamaat is found guilty by courts for the crimes during war of independence , they should accept the verdict and face the consequences . But they are trying to save their skin by muzzling voices of dissent . Hacking people to death will not help them now . Social networking sites are here to stay and they have become an easy and convenient tools in the hands of young dreamers . They wont be silent now . Forces like Jamaat – E – Islami should understand this . Otherwise very soon they will be extinct .

I think , as a conscientious citizen , it is my duty to ponder and comment on the happenings of the world . I also try to inculcate these feelings in the students of my acting academy  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters . Like some others , I cannot think just about my next batch and proclaim from my housetop that mine is the best acting academy of India , best acting institute of Mumbai or the best acting class of bollywood. My acting students should be world citizens and they should think about the happenings of the world .

Ah ! Captain Saurabh Kalia , We Are Ungrateful

Saurabh Kalia

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 31, 2012           05.00 P.M.

Very few people in India remember Captain Saurabh Kalia or even know about him . It is shame , but it is true . Captain Saurabh Kalia was captured by Pakistani army during Kargil war of 1999 and was mercilessly murdered after brutal and inhuman torture . He was just 22 years old at the time of his death .

I have nothing new to say on Captain Saurabh Kalia’s case . I am re-tweeting some relevant tweets about Captain Kalia’s case from the twitter handle of Andhra Pradesh BJP IT Cell . I hope , for discerning and nationalist people , it will be a gentle and tearful reminder about the martyr . For heartless and emotionless brutes , nothing matters . For Congress , the Indian National Congress , the next election is more important and Captain Kalia can’t assure them victory . So for them he is not that important .

Andhra Pradesh BJP IT Cell , in fact , tweeted the verses of Venki . I was moved while going through the lines .

Lets Hang our head in shame while we read these Verses by Venki about Capt Saurab Kalia’s Sacrifice 1/15

They didn’t just pluck your eyes out, Capt Saurabh Kalia, They gouged out ours too. 2/15

Or would we have been blind to your father’s agony, His cry for ‘justice’ for all these years? 3/15

They didn’t just pierce your eardrums, Capt Kalia, They poured hot oil in ours too. 4/15

Or would we be deaf to your mother’s fitful sobs And her pitiful cry of anguish? 5/15

They didn’t just burn your chest, Capt Kalia, They carved out our bleeding hearts too. 6/15

Or would we, as a nation, have been so heartless As to forget our Kargil war hero? 7/15

They didn’t just mangle your private parts, Capt Kalia, They castrated an entire nation. 8/15

Or would we be so impotent that we yearn for aman While they plot yet more jihadi crimes? 9/15

When they ambushed you in the Kargil heights, Capt Kalia, They waylaid every one of us. 10/15

But you died so that we may live Our shameless, ungrateful lives. 11/15

We sent you to war at age 22, Capt Kalia, Which is no viable diable age. 12/15

And yet, we have failed to honour you The way your father sought. 13/15

Shame on us – and , Mother India, That you would send your son to war And yet not collect his martyred ashes Or even shed a silent tear. 14/15

It is shameful that we have almost forgotten Captain Saurabh Kalia , a 22-year-old captain of our army and a martyr of 1999 Kargil war .

I have been often asked , why I keep on writing about matters other than actors , acting and acting institute ? My simple answer is that I want my students to know , apart from films , about our great nation , about the history of India and about the struggle of our national heroes . I am unable to think only about the next batch of my acting school or the coming films of my acting students .

I want my acting students to know about Captain Saurabh Kalia , a martyr , who sacrificed his today for our better tomorrow . On behalf of all the students and staff of Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , I pay my homage to the brave son of Bharat Mata .

Alas ! we have almost forgotten him .

40 Years of Vijay Diwas & Birth of Bangladesh

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 17 , 2011           02.15 A.M.

What a day ! What a glorious day in our history !!

Just one day before my 20th birthday , that is on December 16 , 1971 , Indian Army , our army , defeated Pakistan and as a corollary , a new nation Bangladesh [ then known as East Pakistan ]  came into existence .

English: Pakistan before the Bangladesh War in...

Map of India along with Then West & East Pakistan

In August 1947, the Partition of British India gave birth to two new states; a secular state named India and an Islamic state named Pakistan. Pakistan comprised two geographically and culturally separate areas to the east and the west of India. The western zone was popularly (and for a period of time, also officially) termed West Pakistan and the eastern zone (modern-day Bangladesh) was initially termed East Bengal and later, East Pakistan. Although the population of the two zones was close to equal, political power was concentrated in West Pakistan and it was widely perceived that East Pakistan was being exploited economically, leading to many grievances. Administration of two discontinuous territories was also seen as a challenge.

On 25 March 1971, rising political discontent and cultural nationalism in East Pakistan was met by brutal suppressive force from the ruling elite of the West Pakistan establishment in what came to be termed Operation Searchlight.

The violent crackdown by West Pakistan forces led to Awami League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declaring East Pakistan’s independence as the state of Bangladesh on 26 March 1971.Pakistani President Agha Mohammed Yahya ordered the Pakistani military to restore the Pakistani government’s authority, beginning the civil war. The war led to a sea of refugees (estimated at the time to be about 10 million) flooding into the eastern provinces of India. Facing a mounting humanitarian and economic crisis, India started actively aiding and organising the Bangladeshi resistance army known as the Mukti Bahini.

”]English: East Bengal MapThe war broke out on 26 March 1971 as army units directed by West Pakistan launched a military operation in East Pakistan against Bengali civilians, students, intelligentsia, and armed personnel who were demanding separation of the East from West Pakistan. Bengali military, paramilitary, and civilians formed the Mukti Bahini ( মুক্তি বাহিনী – Liberation Army ) and used guerrilla warfare tactics to fight against the West Pakistan army. India provided economic, military and diplomatic support to the Mukti Bahini rebels, leading West Pakistan to launch Operation Chengiz Khan, a pre-emptive attack on the western border of India which started the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.

On 16 December 1971, the allied forces of the Indian army and the Mukti Bahini defeated the West Pakistani forces deployed in the East. The resulting surrender was the largest in number of prisoners of war since World War II.

Indian Tanks Marching Towards Dhaka

When the war broke out , when Indian Army marched into East Pakistan and defeated Pakistani Army and when Sheikh Mujibur Rehman was released from Pakistani prison and came to New Delhi , I was a 20 year – old-young boy studying  in Allahabad University . For my generation of Indians it was our proudest moment and shall always be so . We used to carry photograph of Lt. General Jagjit Singh Aurora accepting the surrender of  Lt. General A. A. K. Niazi in our pockets . Ah ! What a day , what an event !!

A day after the victory , I turned 20 and now when I am about to complete this blog , I turned 60 . A surfeit of birthday messages are flooding the inbox of my mobile . But I am remembering that glorious day when as youngsters we were feeling so proud and the shame of the defeat in the 1962 Indo – China War simply evaporated .

Leaflets & Pamphlets of Those Times

That day is still vivid in my memory and it seems as if it all happened just yesterday . I wish to shout once again the slogan , which rented the corridors of Sir Ganga Nath Jha Hostel and The Allahabad University during those days .
