A Hypocrite Called Nayantara Sahgal

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           OCTOBER 14, 2015           02.30 A.M.

Let me start with DADRI LYNCHING. It is despicable. It is atrocious. It is condemnable. No sane person will justify this heinous crime.

But it didn’t happen in a BJP-ruled state. It happened in Uttar Pradesh, a state ruled by SAMAJWADI PARTY, a family concern run by indefatigable MULAYAM SINGH YADAV and his bellicose clan.

Then came a statement of NAYANTARA SAHGAL, a forgotten, moth-eaten writer, who happened to be the niece of JAWAHAR LAL NEHRU, the 1st Prime Minister of India, and who got SAHITYA AKADEMY AWARD for her novel ” RICH LIKE US ” during her nephew Rajiv Gandhi’s rule. On October 06, 2015 she returned her SAHITYA AKADEMI AWARD to protest against “increasing intolerance and supporting right to dissent in the country”.

1

Her protest is against killing of Govind Pansare and M. M. Kalburgi and DADRI LYNCHING of a muslim person. I personally don’t support killing of writers or mob lynching. But I also have few questions for NAYANTARA SAHGAL.

3

She accepted SAHITYA AKADEMY AWARD in 1985, just a year after infamous 1984 Anti-Sikh riots of Delhi, during the term of her nephew Rajiv Gandhi. She didn’t return the award then. She didn’t return the award when Babri Majid was demolished. It happened again during Congress rule. She didn’t return the award when KASHMIRI PANDITS were driven out of their houses in Kashmir valley. She didn’t return the award when Narendra Dabholkar was murdered during Congress rule.

2

SO WHY NOW?

She did give her answer. She said, ” NOW THERE IS A HINDUTVA GOVERNMENT AT THE CENTRE.”

I call it selective outrage. She has double standards and is a stark hypocrite.

After her “outrage”, 25 more authors have returned their awards. But look at the facts. Only 25 out of 1004 recipients announce the returning of the awards. Out of these 25 authors, only 8 have written letters that they intend to return the award. And only 3 have returned the award money of INR 1,00,000.00 [ INR One Lakh ]. Wow! such brave intentions!

I denounce these bunch of jokers. They are out of sync with the NEW INDIA. They are jaded. They are archaic. They are hypocrites of the worst kind. It’s a good riddance. NEW INDIA is better placed without such pig-headed intellectuals.

NAYANTARA SAHGAL in her swanky mansion in Dehradun

NAYANTARA SAHGAL in her swanky mansion in Dehradun

Sitting in their swanky mansions, these outdated intellectuals pretend that they know India better. According to me NAYANTARA SAHGAL’s belated protest is linked to her feeling of being a part of Nehru-Gandhi oligarchy and a failed attempt to thwart a perceived threat to the Nehruvian legacy.

threat to the Nehruvian legacy.

GURGAON – NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION – INDIA           AUGUST 25 , 2013           11.50 A.M.

Today as I am sitting in Gurgaon , Haryana [ National Capital Region ] and waiting for the cab to arrive and take me to Indira Gandhi International Airport , New Delhi , I cannot miss the irony of the situation .

It is uncanny that this blog , which is an obituary of Shri Arun Gandhi , is being written in Gurgaon . Shri Arun Nehru died in Gurgaon . This blog is being written on August 25 , 2013 . Shri Arun Nehru died exactly one month before . He breathed his last on July 25 , 2013 in Gurgaon .

Arun Nehru

24 April 1944 – 25 July 2013

I would say that he was a reluctant politician and after retiring as a politician , he became a columnist and he was an excellent columnist .

He was member of the 7th and 8th Lok Sabhas from Rae Bareli on an Indian National Congress ticket . He , after resigning from the Congress , was member of the 9th Lok Sabha from Bilhaur as a Janata Dal leader.

Arun Nehru was born in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, and had worked in business for 17 years , before he entered politics . He was president of the Jenson and Nicholson group at the time when his aunt , Indira Gandhi, persuaded him to change career .

As a representative of the Indian National Congress , Shri Arun Nehru was a member of Parliament in the 7th Lok Sabha (1980-84) and 8th Lok Sabha (1984-89) . Aside from sitting on various consultative committees during this time , he was Union Minister of State for Energy (December 1984—September 1985,) and for Home Affairs (September 1985—October 1986) .

Later due to some differences with his cousin Shri Rajiv Gandhi , he left the Indian National Congress for Janata Dal and was elected to the 9th Lok Sabha, where he was Union Minister for Commerce and Tourism (December-November 1990) .

During his tenure as minister in the Home department in 1985-86, he was allegedly involved in the Czech pistol case, where a deal with a Czechoslovakian firm Merkuria Foreign Trade Corp. had resulted in a loss of around INR25 lakh . But it is not the time to discuss such issues . We should be respectful to the departed soul . A man should not be criticized , when he is not there to defend himself .

FULL EDITNG STUDIO

NEWS LETTER

I used to read his columns and was fan of Arun Nehru , the columnist . It is sad that he is gone and gone too soon .

On behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , I deeply mourn the death of Shri Arun Nehru .

VIDUR Editing Studio , VIDUR Club and VIDUR Theatre also joins in expressing grief over the sad and early demise of Shri Arun Nehru , the Last Nehru .

Adieu Shri Arun Nehru , perhaps the Last Nehru in Indian politics .

[ Personal details of Shri Arun Nehru and his alleged involvement in Czech Pistol Case has been taken from Wikipedia . I express gratitude . ]

China’s India War & Timid Congress Response

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MAY 07 , 2013           08.30 P.M.

China’s India war of 1962 is still fresh in my memory land . Humiliation of my country is yet to get obfuscated in my sub-conscious mind . Deep scars of Chinese slap is yet to get healed in my psyche . Memory of insulting invasion of our motherland refuses to go away from my being . And again almost after 50 years same hegemonic China enacted second part of the same act in 2013 .

India China Border - Conflict Zone

India China Border – Conflict Zone

India & China - Areas of Conflict

India & China – Areas of Conflict

China , on April 15 , 2013 , intruded 19 km. into Ladakh . She is showing her ugly , belligerent and bellicose face once again . Once again Ladakh is facing the brunt of Chinese hegemony . Chinese are as brazen as ever . And the ruling party of our country , the Indian National Congress , is as pliant , as subservient , as ever . Like its tallest leader Jawahar Lal Nehru , present – day leaders of Congress are again ready for genuflection . Sovereignty of India is being compromised unabashedly .

Daulat Beg Oldie and Chumar are the latest flash points . Chinese soldiers  entered into our territory , erected tents and refused to return to their earlier position . And it is not a minor incursion . Their intrusion is 19 km deep into our Ladakh .

Minister for External Affairs , Shri Salman Khurshid , is ambivalent as usual . Government of India and our Prime Minister Shri Manmohan Singh is stoic as usual . Something is being cooking up behind our back . All of a sudden news came that Chinese withdrew from Ladakh and the face off ended . Government Of India spokesperson is saying that Chinese withdrawal from our territory is unconditional . That they voluntarily returned to the pre April 15 position . But it seems that Congress , the Indian National Congress , is playing a dirty and dangerous game .

The buzz is that our government agreed to dismantle the infrastructure in Daulat Beg Oldie sector of Ladakh . They have compromised Chumar post . This particular post overlooks Karakoram Pass . The Karakoram Pass and the Karakoram highway is the lifeline of Pakistan for Pakistan Occupied Kashmir [ POK ] . Indian army can keep vigil on troop movement and clandestine arm supply and on any Sino-Pak nefarious designs . That is the reason for the latest face off .

It is widely believed that to force India to dismantle the bunkers and Chumar watch tower , China sent her soldiers to squat on Indian soil . She showed audacious belligerence and timid Congress succumbed to the pressure and agreed to compromise Chumar post .

China withdrew from Indian soil on May 06 , 2013 . But saddest part is that India also withdrew from Indian soil . If needed , China can come again . It is not the question of China’s intrusion or withdrawal . It is question of India’s genuflection . It is question of our leaders betrayal . Since the days of HINDI CHINI BHAI BHAI  , to the day of present day economic cooperation , nothing has changed in the belligerent attitude of China or the subservient attitude of our leaders of Congress .

China has a problem with all her neighbours . Be it India in the south , be it Indo – China in south – east , be it Taiwan in the east , be it Japan in north – east or be it Mongolia in the north . China’s thirst for land and more land is unquenchable .

Jawahar Lal Nehru betrayed India in 1962 . His descendents are doing the same now . According to Nehru ,  Aksai Chin was the barren area . He infamously said , ” not a blade of grass grows there .” After 50 years his party’s foreign minister says about the Chinese tents , ” it is like acne .” Nehru’s party’s incumbent prime minister says , it is a local problem . ”

We have to be careful . We have to be vigilant . Congress has history of not protecting our motherland . They are compulsive liars . They can go to any length for protecting their throne , but not the country .

According to me we should engage Japan , Mongolia , Taiwan , Vietnam and Philippines in this war against China’s hegemony and her territorial invasions .

I , on behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters   denounce China , her bellicose and belligerent leaders and also the spineless leaders of Congress .

Once upon a time there was a sardar known as Maharaja Ranjit Singh , who conquered Ladakh .

Alas ! Now there is a sardar known as prime minister Manmohan Singh , who compromised Ladakh .

Vidur’s Travel Diary – 8 : Gwalior [ C ]

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 27 , 2012           09.30 P.M.

Gwalior travelogue is really getting longer . This is the third one .

But I clicked lots of photos and apart from that , Jai Vilas Palace and Gwalior fort are really historic and have many anecdotes worth telling , so I can not shorten the travelogue even if I wish to .

If I am remembering correctly , I visited Gwalior for the first time in 1977 / 78 . I went to visit Jai Vilas Palace and Gwalior fort for the first time on that visit . Since then I have visited these two places  3 / 4 times . But this time I went with renewed vigour and with different understanding and outlook .

I always knew that Gwalior is associated with legendary singer Tansen and Maharani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi also . But I was unable to visit their memorials on my previous visits . This time I made it a point to include these memorials in my itinerary .

So after finishing visit of Gwalior fort , I went to see Tansen Mausoleum . I was excited as it was my first visit . Passing through the lanes and by – lanes of old Gwalior , my car stopped in front of an unimpressive iron gate . But as soon as I entered in the compound I was shocked to see a grand mausoleum .

This grand mausoleum belongs to Muhammad Ghaus , a venerable Sufi saint of those times and the mentor of Tansen . Tansen [ born 1493 or 1506  – died 1586 or 1589 ] was born as Ramtanu in a Hindu Gaur Brahman family . His musical talent came to prominence at the age of 5 . Initially he learnt music from Swami Haridas of Vrindavan . He rose to national prominence in the court of legendary Man Singh Tomar , the 10th Tomar King of Gwalior . In Man Singh Tomar’s court he became exponent of Dhrupad and made this form of Hindustani Classical music world-famous . Man Singh Tomar gave him title of  ” Tansen ” . He , later on ,  joined the court of Ramchandra Baghela of Reva . Mughal emperor Akbar heard about him and invited him to his court . Tansen went there , joined his court and thus rose to prominence and immortality .

Later on he embraced Islam and married Akbar’s daughter Meherunnissa .

From Tansen’s mausoleum , I drove to Maharani Lakshmi Bai memorial at Kotah Ki Serai near Phool Bagh . This world-famous queen of Jhansi [ November 19 , 1835 – June 17 , 1858 ] valiantly fought the British during 1st War of Independence of 1857 . She lost Jhansi fort due to treachery of her own people , came to Gwalior to seek help of Scindias but was not able to get their help . Scindia’s unflinching loyalty to their British masters and their non – cooperation to the freedom struggle drove Maharani Lakshmi Bai away from Gwalior and while crossing a nullah , which is still there , she was martyred by British army . She was only 23 years old at the time of her death .

After paying my obeisance at the memorial of Maharani Lakshmi Bai , I was engulfed with emotions . It is sad to get martyred at the tender age of 23 . It is sad to not have a family life , which she definitely deserved . She died for the country at such a tender age but her memorial is not well – kept at all . Few months back I visited Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial at Sriperumbudur . It was so well maintained and beautifully kept , that I was amazed . I am not saying that Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial should not be maintained properly . But the memorial of Maharani Lakshmi Bai also deserves same treatment , if not better .

I am saddened by the neglect .

Evening started descending on the Gwalior city . It was time to leave . Same never-ending feeling engulfed me again and completely.

I remembered Agyeya’s famous lines and left Gwalior . Hope I would visit Gwalior again and really soon .

पार्श्व गिरि का नम्र चीड़ों में , डगर चढ़ती उमंगों सी ;

बिछी पैरों में नदी ज्यों दर्द की रेखा , विहग शिशु मौन नीड़ों में ;

पुनः आऊँगा , भले ही बरस दिन , अनगिन युगों के बाद ;

क्षितिज ने पलक सी खोली , दमक कर दामिनी बोली ;

Upward moving pathways symbolizing my enthusiasm ,

After a year or may be after ages ……….

150 Years of Mahamana Malviya : A Forgotten Hero

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           DECEMBER 26 , 2011           01.50 A.M.

Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya was born on December 25 , 1861 in Allahabad . This year India celebrates his 150th Birth Anniversary.

President of the Indian National Congress

Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya

It is sad that this visionary is almost forgotten by the younger generation . People of my generation will know him by his title Mahamana . But today’s generation would not recognize him even if you mention his full name ; Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya .

It is sad and tells the pathetic state of our educational standards that a leader of the calibre of Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya is forgotten by today’s generation .

English: Statue of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya...

Mahamana's Statue at the Main Entrance of B.H.U.

Mahamana was the President of Indian National Congress on four occasions ; 1909 – 1910 , 1918 – 1919 , 1930 – 1931 and then again 1932 – 1933 . He was founder of Banaras Hindu University , the largest residential university in Asia and one of the largest in the world . He founded it in 1916 . He was Vice – Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University [ BHU ] from 1919 to 1938 . He was succeeded by none other than Dr. S. Radhakrishnan .

Apart from being an educationist , he dabbled in journalism also . He founded ” The Leader ” in 1909 , a very popular and influential news paper , published from Allahabad .

He was the Chairman of ” Hindustan Times ” from 1924 to 1946 . He was also instrumental for the Hindi edition of ” The Hindustan Times ” , named ” Hindustan ” in 1936 .

Hindustan Times

Hindustan Times

He was pioneer pf Scout movement in India .

Born in Allahabad in the family of Sanskrit scholars , he did his matriculation from Muir Central College and graduation from Calcutta University .

His ancestors hailed from Malwa , so they were called Malviya . Due to poor economic condition , he could not complete post graduation and started his career as a teacher in Allahabad District School .Later on he left his job and became editor of a nationalist daily ” Hindustan ‘ . After two and half years he left the paper to join LL. B. After finishing his law degree , he started practise in Allahabad District Court and later on in moved to Allahabad High Court .

He gave up his well stablished law practise in 1911 for education and social service . He donned the robe again only to fight the case of Chouri Choura freedom fighters . 177 freedom fighters got capital punishment . Mahamana fought their case and was successful in saving 156 freedom fighters .

He attended 2nd session of Indian National Congress in 1886 in Calcutta [ Now Kolkata ] . He was associated with The Congress long before Mahatma Gandhi became a national figure . Mahatma Gandhi began his association with The Congress in 1921 . So Mahamana Malviya was his senior by 35 years . A fact non known by present day Indians and conveniently overlooked by present day leaders of The Congress . He was an active nationalist from 1886 , when Jawahar Lal Nehru was not even born .

It is sad that a leader of such seniority and calibre is forgotten and Indian National Congress has almost banished him from the pantheon . Congress has been usurped by Gandhi – Nehru family and because of PR activities and media blitzkrieg , people associate only Gandhi and Nehru clan with the Congress Party .

Mahamana is sadly forgotten

Madan Mohan Malviya Stadium.

Madan Mohan Malviya Stadium

Today Banaras Hindu University is the sole reminder of Mahamana . Malviya Nagar in various Indian cities like ; Allahabad , Lucknow , Delhi , Bhopal and Jaipur keep his memory alive . People have forgotten that he started tradition of Aarti at Har Ki Poudi , Haridwar , which is still followed.

Banaras Hindu University

Logo of BHU

Ganga still flows in Haridwar , still slithers through Allahabad and Varanasi , Banaras Hindu University still stands tall . They all bear his testimony . They all remind his gigantic contributions . But alas , Indian National Congress has removed him from the pantheon . He has been downgraded and has no prominent place at the echelon . Though he was senior to Gandhi and Nehru , but has been relegated to irrelevance . His photos are missing from Congress literature and books and functions .

English: Panoramic View of Har ki pauri

Panoramic View of Har Ki Paudi

I am saddened . I get hurt when I see articles about the contribution of Rajiv Gandhi and / or Sonia Gandhi in the papers and magazines . It is pathetic that even Rahul Gandhi is eulogized and this giant is neglected .He is branded as communal by some pseudo – secular , while appeasement is the order of the day .

Library of Banaras Hindu University

New Vishwanath Temple also known as Birla Mand...

New Vishwanath Temple Conceived by Mahamana

Government of India is celebrating his 150 years with a function in Delhi . It was supposed to be held on December 25th but will now happen on December 27th . Rulers of the day has no time for Mahamana . And , in my opinion , this function is not to commemorate the memory of Mahamana . Elections are due in Uttar Pradesh . The Congress needs to win Uttar Pradesh . To lure crucial Brahmin votes , they need an icon , a Brahmin icon . So they remembered Mahamana . They need Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya . So this charade of celebration of 150 Years of Mahamana Pandit Madan Moham Malviya came into being .

Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru , who usurped Mahamana’s title Pandit , now fails to help The Congress , so Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya is being tried out .After making Congress a fiefdom of Nehru – Gandhi family , after almost disowning  Sardar Patel , after branding Mahamana a communal leader and a sectarian leader of Hindus , The Indian Nation Congress is trying to pay lip service to the memory of Mahamana and trying to remember him on his 150th Anniversary , though they were the one , who obfuscated his memory and neglected his contribution .

It is sad ! It is bizarre ! It is ridiculous !!

I , through this blog , pay my obeisance to Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya . I also urge Malviya Mission , an organization dedicated to his memory , to do more .

Vidur’s Travel Diary – 6 : Kanchipuram

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA          DECEMBER 05 , 2011           01.00 P.M.

On the 30th morning , my last day in Chennai , I started for my journey to Kanchipuram . It is 71 km. from Chennai . I had read in the Holy scriptures that 7 holy cities have powers to give you salvation or Nirvana . They are Ayodhya , Mathura , Maya [ Haridwar ] , Kashi [ Varanasi ] in Uttar Pradesh , Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu , Avantika [ Ujjain ] in Madhya Pradesh and Dwarka in Gujarat .

अयोध्या , मथुरा , माया , काशी , कांची , अवंतिका ;
पुरीद्वारावातिश्चैव , सप्तैते मोक्षदायिका

This is the shloka from Garud Puran and I used to recite it during my childhood . I had already visited 6 cities and only Kanchipuram was left . So the excitement was palpable . After fabulous breakfast in a roadside restaurant , we reached Kanchipuram in 2 hours . The city , formerly known as Conjeevaram , is situated on the banks of Vegavati river and is known for thousand temples and silk sarees . It is also called City of 1000 Temples . Once upon a time , it was kingdom of Pallava empire for 200 years , and is one of the oldest cities of South India .

Our first stop was 3,500 years old Ekambarnathar Temple :

At The Gate of Ekambarnathar Temple

Gopuram of 3,500 years old Ekambarnathar Temple :

Gopuram of Ekambarnathar Temple

Kanchipuram is the centre of one of the four Mathas , stablished by Adi Shankaracharya . Badrinath in the North , Dwarka in the West , Jagannath Puri in the East and Kanchipuram in the South . So our next stop was Kanchi Kamkoti Peetham Meenakshi Temple :

Meenakshi Temple of Kanchi Kamkoti Peetham

Gopuram of Meenakshi Temple : Kanch Kamkoti Peetham

After Kanchi Kamkoti Peetham , we visited Varadharaja Perumal Temple :

Varadharaja Perumal Temple

Entrance of Varadharaja Perumal Temple

Kanchipuram is birthplace of famous Sanskrit poet Dandin . He is writer of Dashakumaracharitam . Another famous Sanskrit poet Bharavi , who wrote Kiratarjuniyam , also hailed from here . Bharavi wrote his Kiratarjuniyam here under the patronage of the Pallav king Simhavishnu .  So out of four most famous poets of Sanskrit , two ; Dandin and Bharavi belong to Kanchipuram . Other two are ; Kalidas and Magha . The famous shloka describing their eminence is still fresh in my memory :

उपमा कालिदासस्य , भारवेरर्थ गौरवं ;
डंडीनः पद लालित्यम , माघे सन्ति त्रयो गुणाः

It is irony of the fate that Kanchipuram , which is second only to Varanasi in Sanskrit learning and which is the centre of Hinduism since time immemorial , is also the birthplace of C. N. Annadurai , an atheist and most famous Dravidian leader , second only to E. V. Ramasami Naicker Periyar . He formed Dravid Munnetra Kazhagam in 1949 and led it to victory in Tamil Nadu assembly elections in 1967 . Though C. N. Annadurai ruled only for 2 years and died in 1969 but his influence on Tamil Nadu and Dravid politics is immense . He is the first Non – Congress and Dravid leader to become Chief minister of Tamil Nadu , then known as Madras  . He is the first Non – Congress leader to come to power with absolute majority in any Indian state and ended monopoly of Congress in Tamil Nadu . M. Bakthavatsalam was the last Congress Chief Minister and since 1967 to 2011 , it is 44 years since Congress lost power . C. N. Annadurai symbolized this Non – Congress sentiment .

Kanchipuram is his birthplace and his house is converted into a memorial . I visited his memorial also ;

C. N. Annadurai's House in Kanchipuram

After Kanchipuram , I proceeded to Vellore . It is a small town 145 km. from Chennai . It is situated on the banks of Palar river . It is famous for hospital and V.I.T. University [ Vellore Institute of Technology ] . Since my sister’s son is studying there I went there to meet him .

With My Nephew Kaustubh in the V. I. T. Campus

V. I. T. Gate

While coming to Kanchipuram from Chennai , one can see Rajiv Gandhi Memorial in Sriperumbudur also . This small place is situated 40 km. away from Chennai and comes under Kanchipuram district . It is birthplace of Sri Ramanujacharya , one of the most prominent Hindu Vaishnav saints . In 1991 Rajiv Gandhi was killed here during an election campaign and this small , unknown town became known to all . I visited his grand memorial ;

Rajiv Gandhi Memorial at Sriperumbudur

Rajiv Gandhi Memorial at Sriperumbudur

Rajiv Gandhi Memorial at Sriperubudur

It is a grand and opulent memorial . I am not against it  . But I am sad that crores are spent on Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial and Subramanya Bharathi’s memorial in Puducherry is now closed .

With this I finished my 12 days pilgrimage , said good-bye to Chennai , took train from Egmore on December 01st and reached Mumbai on December 02nd .

Egmore Station - Chennai

I don’t know whether I would be visiting these place again or not . I do intend to visit but …….? As usual I remember few lines of Hindi poet Agyeya and leave everything to my destiny .

पार्श्व गिरि का नम्र चीड़ों में , डगर चढ़ती उमंगों सी ;

Arjun Singh : End of A Pseudo-Secular

NIGHT…………………………………………………..11.30

It is said , do not to speak bad about the deceased. Those who are gone from this world should be respected. We should not mention their bad deeds. Agreed . So why we still rant about Ravana, Kans or Duryodhan ? Or why we still speak about / against Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini ? Or nearer home about / against Nathu Ram Godse ? There are people whose legacy is tainted, whose life was controversial, whose actions affected the vast populace in a wrong way. So whether alive or dead, they can’t escape public wrath. Arjun Singh belonged to this august ( ? ) category .

Arjun Singh died on March 04, 2011 in Delhi at the age of 80 . He belonged to Churhat Jagir under ex-princely state of Rewa. His father Rao Shiv Bahadur Singh was also a Congressman and was Union Minister of Industries under Jawahar Lal Nehru. He was convicted of forging documents favouring a diamond business and was sentenced to 3 years rigorous imprisonment. He eventually died in prison.

Arjun Singh was the worthy ( ? ) son of his equally worthy ( ? ) and illustrious ( ? ) father. Father a convicted prisoner and the son a scamster. I am giving lists of his scams and cases, which I have taken from Wikipedia :

CONTROVERSIES

======================

Churhat Lottery Case and Kerwa Dam Palace :

While Arjun Singh was the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, he was involved in the scandal which was called by some the Churhat Lottery case. The Churhat Children Welfare Society was floated in 1982 by relatives of Singh, and permitted to raise funds via lottery, and also given tax relief as a charity. However, there were widespread allegations that a substantial sums were siphoned off and used to construct the lavish Kerwa Dam palace near Bhopal. The donations to the society included a Rs 150,000 donation from Union Carbide, whose chief Warren Anderson was permitted to leave the country after the gas leak, allegedly by Arjun Singh’s office.

At a public litigation hearing the high court observed that “Arjun Singh owed an explanation to the nation about the costs and sources of construction of the palatial mansion in Bhopal”. While Singh had claimed the value of the palace was Rs 18 lakh, the IT Department estimated the cost at above Rs one crore. However, a one-judge commission investigating the scandal gave a clean chit to Arjun Singh. The case was re-opened however, after the Jain Hawala case, and Singh was asked to submit fresh re-estimates of the palace cost. In court, the case was argued by Kapil Sibal and the order for re-examination was squashed on the grounds that it had been issued in a haste and “had not applied his mind”.

Bhopal Gas Tragedy :

Arjun Singh was the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh when the deadly gas leak from the Union Carbide factory occurred. It is widely alleged that on the fateful night between December 2, 1984 and December 3, 1984 , when the gas leak occurred, Arjun Singh fled to his Kerwa Dam palace (outside Bhopal) to save himself from deadly effects of leaked gas and was not available to manage the crisis or lead the administration. Subsequently the Arjun Singh government’s mishandling was criticized by the court in the 7 June 2010 verdict on Bhopal Gas Disaster pronounced by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bhopal. The media raised serious questions about his role in the release of Warren Anderson.. In particular, the pilot of the aircraft in which Warren Anderson flew out of India after the gas leak, has recorded that the final sanction to permit the flight came from Arjun Singh’s office.

Reservation Controversy :

Additional controversy was created in 2005 by drafting the proposed 104th Amendment Bill to the constitution, which subsequently became the 93rd Amendment. According to this amendment, which has yet to pass the ‘Basic Structure‘ test of constitutionality by the Supreme Court, all private unaided educational institutes could be asked by their State Governments to reserve seats for designated Other Backward Classes. In early 2006, Singh also sought to increase caste-based reservation quotas for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the internationally reputed Indian Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Management, along with other Indian central government-run institutes of higher studies, from 22.5% to 49.5%. Arjun Singh planned to impose quotas not just in 32 Central institutions, but also in over 100 deemed universities.

He noted, in the context of Dalit Muslim reservations that “the UPA is entirely committed towards the cause of Muslims”.

Other Controversies :

1 – After the Mumbai train bombings of 2006, he reportedly quoted at a Cabinet meeting the statements of a former judge of the Maharashtra High Court that an earlier attempt on the headquarters of the Hindu revivalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in Nagpur had been a plot set into motion by the Sangh itself. This followed his denouncement of the Ekal Vidyalayas, one-teacher schools run for the benefit of the tribals of India by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad., as communal.

2 – A case under the Anti-Dowry Act has been registered against Arjun Singh. Mayawati government has decided to seek CBI inquiry into dowry harassment case.

3 – Arjun Singh was accused of irregularities and corruption in the grant of Deemed University status to private for-profit educational institutions which did not meet requisite educational standards, during his tenure as Minister for Human Resources Development. The Government of India initiated proceedings to repeal the “Deemed University” status of 44 such institutions in Jan 2010.

He was of the opinion that he is the best person to lead this nation , if there is no Nehru-Gandhi scion on the throne. So every person other than Nehru-Gandhi clan, who became Prime Minister, is a usurper. So he thought , it is his divine duty to conspire against them. P. V. Narsimha Rao , who according to him , was the usurper and this willy Thakur of Churhat conspired against Rao throughout his tenure, though Rao was legally and constitutionally elected Prime Minister. He broke away from the Congress and formed All India Indira Congress [ Tiwari ] and led an open revolt against P. V. Narsimha Rao. And his revolt was to convince Sonia Gandhi, a reluctant widow , to enter politics. If he can’t be the Prime Minister so no one else should be allowed to continue. Let there be a Nehru-Gandhi scion. He was ready to be a doormat.

He was 3 times Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh. He was Union Cabinet Minister under Man Mohan Singh from 2004 – 2009. During Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure he was Governor of Punjab also and is widely credited for Rajiv – Longwal Accord. But his image of being a shrewd politician preceded him . He trusted none and no one ever trusted him. He used to record even his normal conversations.

Ironically , he died on the day he was dropped from the Congress Working committee by Sonia Gandhi , for whom he fought relentlessly with P. V. Narsimha Rao. Such is life !

I am not happy that he died. But I am not sad either. He was very controversial politician of our time. He was tainted and he was a psedo-secular. Above all he was a known Hindu-baiter.

But still I pray that his soul rest in peace !

And this prayer comes from the heart of a Hindu , a secular Hindu. And to be a secular I don’t need to berate my religion like Arjun Singh.
