JNU : Hub of Anti-National Communist Traitors

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           FEBRUARY 14, 2016           11.40 P.M.

I am agitated. I am angry. I am furious.

Maqbool Bhat was hanged in 1984 , February 11, 1984. Indira Gandhi of Indian National Congress was the Prime Minister of India.

Afzal Guru was hanged in 2013 , February 09, 2013. Manmohan Singh of Indian National Congress was the Prime Minister of India.

Hanging of both these Kashmiri separatists, terrorists and Mir Jafars of modern-day India happened in Congress rule. Why communist of JNUSU  [ Jawahar Lal Nehru University Student Union ] raising it now? Why scion of Congress Rahul Gandhi is supporting this nefarious anti-national activity? Dude, it all happened when your grandmother Indira Gandhi and your factotum Manmohan Singh were ruling the country.

Let us have full details of the incident which happened in JNU campus on that shameful, fateful day.

‘The Country Without a Post Office’ event

A group of students organized an event on 9th February 2016, to mark the hanging of Afzal Guru, convicted for the 2001 Indian Parliament Attack. The name of the event is derived from the book of poetry titled ’The Country Without a Post Office’ by Agha Shahid Ali about a particularly violent period in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The student organizers of the event had pasted posters across the campus inviting them to a “cultural evening of protest with poets, artists, singers, writers, students, intellectuals & cultural activists along with art exhibition & photo exhibition” on “9th Feb, Tuesday at Sabarmati Dhaba”, “Against the Brahminical ‘Collective Conscience’! Against the judicial killing of Afzal Guru & Maqbool Bhat! In solidarity with the struggle of the Kashmiri people for their democratic right to self determination…”.

The Joint Secretary of JNU Students’ Union Saurabh Kumar Sharma of the ABVP  wrote a letter to the Vice Chancellor M Jagdish Kumar, complaining that “these activities will disturb the peace & harmony of the campus” and requesting him to rusticate the involved students. It prompted the university administration to order cancellation of the march as they “feared” that it might “disrupt” peace on campus.

University authorities’ response

The University authorities disallowed this program, citing misrepresentation of the nature of the event. “We heard there was some cultural programme but later came to know it’s not a programme but a protest. We came to know about it through posters and no permission was sought by anyone. Thus, to keep calm and maintain peace in the campus, we cancelled it,” JNU Vice-Chancellor Prof Jagadesh Kumar said.

But the organisers went ahead with the programme despite the cancellation of the permission.

Controversial slogans raised

Some of the students raised Anti Indian slogans like :

“Kashmir ki azaadi tak jang rahegi”

“Bharat ki barbadi tak jung rahegi”

“India go back”

“Pakistan Zindabad”

It translates to “Will fight this war until the independence of Kashmir, until the destruction of India”. Agitated over the issue, ABVP members gathered outside VC office and shouted slogans demanding expulsion of the students who contributed to the “anti-national” activity. The Anti-India sloganeering evoked strong emotions among general public as the students who were shouting the anti-India slogans are heavily subsidised in their education from tax payers money.

Students’ Union response

In his Facebook post dated 11 February 2016, JNU Students’ Union President Kanhaiya Kumar said “We will fight for democracy, for our constitution and the equal nation for all. In the name of Afzal Guru, ABVP is trying to divert all the issues to save the failure of the Central Govt.”

Arrests of student leaders

Acting on a complaint filed by BJP MP Maheish Girri, on 12 February 2016 the JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested by the Delhi Police. He was charged with sedition under section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, that allows for maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

In an amateur video shot a few hours before his arrest, Kanhaiya Kumar says (translated from Hindi): “We don’t need a patriotism certificate from the RSS”, he says. “We love this country. We fight for the 80% poor population of this country. We trust the constitution of this country. If anyone challenges the constitution, be it the Sanghis, it won’t be tolerated,”

Amnesty International criticized the arrest, calling it unwarranted. In a statement posted on Facebook, Amnesty International further added “The right to freedom of expression extends to speech that offends or disturbs. India’s sedition law is contrary to international standards on freedom of expression and must be repealed.”

A day later, seven more students were detained by the police.

The arrests soon snowballed into a major political controversy, with several leaders of opposition parties visiting the JNU campus in solidarity with the students protesting against the police crackdown. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated that while the students would not be harassed, the “guilty would not be spared”. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiran Rijiju said the JNU would not be allowed to become a hub for “anti-national” activities.

Enquiry Committee

The Statement of the Vice-Chancellor Jawaharlal Nehru University stated “Along with the Deans Committee, the University takes serious note of the incidents on campus on the evening of February 9th. A high-level enquiry committee has been constituted to investigate the matter and take appropriate action as necessary. While the JNU community upholds the right to free debate on campus, the University strongly condemns the use of the University as a platform for activities that violate the Constitution and the laws of the land. However, there could be aberrations where fringe sections misuse the freedom provided. While that problem would be appropriately addressed in this case, the University would also take steps to protect the academic atmosphere and the environment for vibrant discussion that JNU has always provided and stands for.”

“The permission for the programme was sought by giving incomplete information, so it is an act of indiscipline. A committee headed by the Chief Proctor will examine the footage of the event and speak to the witnesses. It is on basis of the report, the varsity will take appropriate action,” JNU Vice-Chancellor Jagdeesh Kumar said. Briefing about the “incomplete information”, the varsity Registrar Bhupinder Zutshi said, “There was nowhere mentioned in the permission request that the event will be on Afzal Guru, they just said that they wanted to organise a cultural event. How can any talk about disintegration of nation be national?”

Interim Report

A press note dated 12 February 2016 stated “Considering the seriousness of the incidents, and in order to enable a fair enquiry, the Committee has debarred eight students from academic activities with immediate effect during the pendency of the enquiry. However, to permit them represent their stand for a fair investigation, they will be allowed to stay in their respective hostels as a guest, during the period of the enquiry.”

I have always written about the anti-national , communist activities of traitors in the campuses. FTII was the first nut case after Narendra Modi government came into power. I wrote many blogs about their designs and non-academic activities. They have been tamed now.

And now comes JNU. “CULTURAL EVENT” is fine. DEBATE is okay. DISSENT is also acceptable. But shouting anti-India slogan is neither “CULTURAL” nor “DISSENT”.

“Kashmir ki azaadi tak jang rahegi”

“Bharat ki barbadi tak jung rahegi”

“India go back”

“Pakistan Zindabad”

It is pure , unadulterated sedition. It is anti-national. It is secession. It should be condemned. But alas ! The traitor Communists are up in arms against Narendra Modi government. Rahul Gandhi has also joined them. Their pathological hatred for Narendra Modi should be curbed, curtailed and nipped immediately.

Rahul Gandhi, Ajay Makan, D. Raja & Sitaram Yetury in JNU Protest

Rahul Gandhi, Ajay Makan, D. Raja, Anand Sharma & Sitaram Yetury in JNU Protest

As I am writing this blog, I read that “Tum kitne Afzal maroge ; Har ghar se Afzal niklega” shouting brave hearts ( ? ) are on the run. They are absconding. Their facebook accounts deleted. Such is the bravery of these Communist pigs !

JNU in support of Afzal Guru

JNU in support of Afzal Guru

I denounced Communist traitors of  JNU , their supporters like D. Raja and Sitaram Yechuri and Rahul Gandhi [ An anti-national on probation ] . D. Raja , who is taking moral high ground , is particularly responsible because his daughter Aparajitha Raja participated in that infamous “Cultural Event” of JNU.

In the end I am quoting a Hindi poem sent to me by Shri Awnish Barnawal, a nationalist Hindu Swayamsevak from my home town Deoria, UP.

BJP Victories in 2015 : From Andaman to Ladakh & Goa

DSC01182

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           OCTOBER 28, 2015           12.40 P.M.

May 2014 is the date India, Indians and the world wont be able to forget for a long time. It is permanently etched in the memory of the nationalists, seculars, Left-Liberals of India and the people of the world at large. Result of Indian general elections were declared in May and Narendra Modi led Bharatiya Janata Party won absolute majority on its own in LOK SABHA.

Almost 5 months later in October 2014 MAHARASHTRA and HARYANA, 2 states went to polls. BJP won the elections and formed governments in both the states for the first time.

Two months later in November / December 2014 JHARKHAND and JAMMU & KASHMIR state assemblies went to polls. BJP again won Jharkhand on its own and formed the government. BJP swept Jammu but fell short of majority in Jammu & Kashmir assembly. It formed the government with the help of PDP of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. It got post of Speaker and Dy. Chief Minister and heads several important ministries. Both the state governments are the first for BJP. JHARKHAND on its own and JAMMU & KASHMIR in coalition.

So the year 2014 ended with unprecedented success for BJP. First Lok Sabha, then in the assemblies of MAHARASHTRA, HARYANA , JHARKHAND and JAMMU & KASHMIR, BJP scored impressive victory in all the 4 states.

2015 started with a sour note. In February 2015, BJP lost DELHI to Aam Aadmi Party. Its BJP’s only defeat till date. Its only defeat of indefatigable Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister and modern-day Chanakya and bellicose Amit Shah, the BJP President.

August 2015 came as the month of victory in Local Body elections. BJP made impressive gains in the municipal boards and municipal corporations in MADHYA PRADESH, RAJASTHAN and BRUHAT BENGALURU MAHANAGARA PALIKE. BJP made clean sweep in the Local Body elections of the 3 states.

But the real game changer came a month later.

Came month of September 2015 and it brought unexpected and unprecedented victory of BJP in Panchayat and Municipal elections of ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS. Andaman & Nicobar Islands are the remote area and was not considered as stronghold of BJP.

All the other above mentioned national, provincial and local body elections were widely reported and discussed in the national print and electronic media. But Local Body elections of ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS were not even prominently and properly reported. Media almost ignored it. Therefore I am chronicling results of these election.

October 2015 brought another BJP victory to our notice. BJP swept LADAKH AUTONOMOUS HILL DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL. It won 2/3rd majority in LAHDC for the first time.

In the same month, i.e. October 2015, while I was about to post this blog, last night came the news of BJP victory in the GOA Local Body Elections. Out of 11 Municipal Councils, BJP won 6, Congress won 4 and 1 got hung verdict.

But let me first start with Andaman & Nicobar Island results.

Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections

================================================

A complete rejection of the Congress, acceptance of RSS programmes and attraction for Narendra Modi’s development plank seem to have worked in favour of the BJP, which registered a landslide victory in the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections in October 2015.

Coming at a time when the BJP has conquered an area that has a mixed demography comprising Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus and Christians.

 Total Seats – 26 : BJP 18 / Congress 5 / National Conference 2 / Independent 1

Goa Municipal Council Results

===============================

Candidates backed by BJP won majority of seats in 6 municipal councils in Goa in the local body elections, while Congress-backed candidates won majority in 4 towns.

Total Municipal Councils – 11 : BJP 6 / Congress 4 / Hung 1

BJP won majority of seats in Mapusa, Mormugao (Vasco-da-Gama), Sanguem, Pernem, Curchorem and Bicholim.

Congress won majority in Valpoi, Quepem, Margao, and Cuncolim.

Canacona saw the candidates from two sides winning five seats each.

———————————————————————

Thus apart from DELHI assembly elections, BJP, after winning Lok Sabha, won 4 assembly elections of MAHARASHTRA, HARYANA, JHARKHAND and JAMMU & KASHMIR.

BJP also won Local Body Elections in 6 states of MADHYA PRADESH, RAJASTHAN, BENGALURU, ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS, LADAKH and GOA.

Battle of BIHAR is going on. Election of 3rd phase is going to be held today. 2 phases are still left. Results will be out on November 8, 2015. But about Bihar, I will write later.

Janata Party Merges With BJP , An Era Ends

DSC01182

GURGAON – NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION – INDIA           AUGUST 23 , 2013           10.45 P.M.

There was an innocuous news in the national newspapers last week . Subramanian Swamy merged his Janata Party with the Bharatiya Janata Party . There were some sarcastic remarks about the defunct party merging with BJP . Some chose to ignore the news . And some kept silence after initial taunt . But for me it opened floodgate of memories of some bygone era . Some cherished memories of my young days came to knock at my  door . I became nostalgic and started remembering those eventful days in the history of our nation .

Raj Narain, a socialist leader, had filed a legal writ alleging electoral malpractice against Indira Gandhi in 1971. On 12 June 1975, Allahabad High Court found her guilty of using corrupt electoral practices in her 1971 election victory over Narain in the Rae Bareli constituency. She was barred from contesting any election for the next six years. Economic problems, corruption and the conviction of Gandhi led to widespread protests against the Congress ( I ) government, which responded by imposing a State of Emergency in the country . The rationale was that of preserving national security.

However, the government introduced press censorship, postponed elections and banned strikes and rallies. Opposition leaders such as Jayaprakash Narayan, Jivatram Kripalani and Morarji Desai were imprisoned, along with thousands of other political activists.

Indira Gandhi is elected as the first female P...

When the State of Emergency was lifted and new elections called in 1977, opposition political parties such as the Congress (O), Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Bharatiya Lok Dal as well as defectors from the Congress ( I ) , known as Congress For Democracy ( CFD ) joined to form the Janata party, which won a sweeping majority in the Indian Parliament. Raj Narain defeated Indira Gandhi at Rae Bareilly in those elections.

Constituent Parties of Janata Party

Congress (Urs) leaders like Devaraj Urs joined Janata Party in the later stage.

In the general election held after the end of the state of emergency in 1977, the Janata party defeated Congress ( I ) to form the first non-Congress government in the history of the Republic of India. I heard the news of formation of Janata Party , defeat of Indira Gandhi and the Congress on radio . I still remember , I didn’t sleep a wink , and kept on listening the news throughout the night . Even today I am unable to forget that feeling after listening that Invincible Indira Gandhi got defeated and the Congress will no longer going to rule us .

Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desai in New Del...

Prime Minister Morarji Desai in New Delhi, signing the “New Delhi” declaration during a visit by US president Jimmy Carter (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The Janata Party formed the government with Morarji Desai as prime minister. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had become the leader of the Jana Sangh after Deen Dayal Upadhyaya’s death in 1967, was appointed as the external affairs minister in the new government.

The new Janata-led government reversed many Emergency-era decrees and opened official investigations into Emergency-era abuses. Although several major foreign policy and economic reforms were attempted, continuous in-fighting and ideological differences made the Janata government unable to effectively address national problems. By mid-1979, Prime Minister Morarji Desai was forced to resign and his successor Chaudhary Charan Singh failed to sustain a parliamentary majority as alliance partners withdrew support. Popular disenchantment with the political in-fighting and ineffective government led to the resurgence of Gandhi and her new Congress (I) party, which won the general election called in 1980.

The Janata government did not last long, though. Morarji Desai resigned as prime minister, and the Janata party was consequently dissolved.

Bharatiya Janata Party (1980-)

In 1980, the leaders and workers of the former Bharatiya Jana Sangh, founded the Bharatiya Janata Party with Atal Bihari Vajpayee as its first president .

Election Symbol of Bharatiya Janata Party

Election Symbol of Bharatiya Janata Party (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Although the original Janata Party fragmented and eventually dissolved, modern political parties continue to invoke its legacy. Subramanian Swamy kept the name Janata Party , and was the National President of the party .

The irony of the situation or fate is that Bharatiya Jan Sangh members were forced to leave Janata Party on the pretext of dual membership . They chose to remain loyal to RSS ideology and left Janata Party and formed Bharatiya janata Party in 1980 . Quirk of the fate forced the same Janata Party to merge itself with the Bharatiya Janata Party . In August 2013, when the news came that the party was merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party , I just smiled .

Destiny plays strange games . Sometimes even bizarre games . BJP was formed after several swayamsevaks came out of Janata Party on the issue of dual membership and 33 years later , the parent body came and merged itself with the BJP .

Issue of Dual membership and the cacophony that followed , is finished forever . Socialists , who raised the issue , are extinct now . And last but not the least , Janata Party ceases to exist .

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 06 , 2013           11.40 P.M.

It is hard to defend a death . It is difficult not to sympathise with the grieving family of a 23 year – old boy Sudipto Gupta . It is suicidal to swim against the tide . It is politically wrong to support a government , which is accused by one and all , for murdering a young boy . But still there is a case in favour of Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress . Before getting swayed away by the orchestrated public outcry , before being inundated by the flood of tears of cunning comrades , pause for a moment and think properly .

The dead boy belonged to SFI [ Student Federation of India ] . This so called youth organization is affiliated to CPI-M [ Communist Party of India – Marxist ] . And it is prudent to recall that CPI-M ruled West Bengal for almost 4 decades . And then came Mamata Banerjee and she single-handedly defeated the mighty ,  invincible comrades . And the comrades are not supposed to give up power easily and willingly. Comrades are desperate to dislodge Mamata Banerjee since then .

Every politician can falter . May be Mamata Banerjee made some mistakes . But she is an elected Chief Minister of West Bengal . She should be allowed to rule for 5 years and that too peacefully. CPI-M should understand this , and if they are not willing to understand then they should be forced to see the writing on the wall . It should be drilled into their dark , empty heads .

I am forced to remember happenings from the day one , when Mamata Banerjee took charge of West Bengal . She went to inspect a hospital and the doctor on duty questioned her presence in the hospital . Is it not proper for an elected Chief Minister of a state to visit a hospital ? Should a people’s representative seek doctor’s permission before visiting a hospital ? The answer is a definite no . But CPI-M , through their committed card-holder members , wanted to show the world that Mamta Bannerjee is a persona – non – grata in her own state .

They , forgetting their own blood-drenched past , are now shedding copious tears on national television after Sudipto Gupta’s death . I could feel a sense of glee in the hearts of comrades . Apparently Sitaram Yechuri was showing grief at the demise of SFI member but he seemed to be quite pleased that at least now they have got a stick to beat the formidable foe .

Their selective amnesia should be brought in the public view . Comrades are adept in annihilating their political opponents . They have killed thousands of RSS [ Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ] workers in Kerala . They have brutally murdered their political opponents in West Bengal . Ask any CPI-M deserters . They will tell you the gruesome story . In the hinterlands of West Bengal , comrades used to hang a white sari in front of the house of the person , who voted or even participated in the political activities of opposition parties . White sari symbolised the impending widowhood to the wife of the deserter .

National media knows everything but they are myopic and inadvertently helping CPI-M . And shrewd comrades are exploiting the situation and enjoying the moment . They are shedding copious tears on the national television but in the privacy of their offices they must be having orgasm . At least no one can support West Bengal government of Mamata Banerjee on this point .

Death is sad . Death of a young man is shattering for the family . But may I ask why these comrades are on rampage since their defeat in West Bengal ? Why the comrades are not willing to wait for 5 years ? If their commitment for democracy is so unflinching , they should wait for the next general election . They should desist from unleashing their cadres on the streets and on police . When they were ruling West Bengal , it is alleged that they tried to annihilate Mamata Banerjee . They insulted her . They dragged her on the streets by catching hold of her hair . But a hypocrite like Sitaram Yetury , who is shedding tears now , was silent then . Even late Jyoti Basu , who is considered a BHADROLOK [ gentlemen ] by the media , remained a passive and silent onlooker like the mythological Dhritarashtra .

Jyoti Basu (8 July 1914 – 17 January 2010) or ...

Jyoti Basu (8 July 1914 – 17 January 2010) or Jyotirindra Basu was an Indian politician belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from West Bengal, India. He served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1977 to 2000, making him the longest-serving Chief Minister of any Indian state. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

I am not from Bengal . I can’t be accused of having any personal interest in the politics of Mamata Banerjee . I am not going to gain anything by supporting her and that too at this juncture . But I know the cunning comrades . I just felt that even at this juncture India and the discerning public should know the truth and they should not be swayed away by temporary and fluid situations and emotions . It would be fatal to play in the hands of comrades . These murderers are waiting for the opportunity and we should not do anything to help them . Their dream of ruling India is shattered . Their secret wish to paint India red lies in shambles . Any effort to demonize Mamata Banerjee would be like inviting the killers in our house .

A dream never fulfilled

I feel for the family of the dead boy . I sympathise with the near and dear ones . But I refuse to criticize Mamata Banerjee for this death . Because I also remember the killings and annihilation of political opponents done by the communists of India .

Police claims that Sudipto Gupta died because of accident . Comrades are crying foul . You should remember ACP Dhoble of Mumbai police . He was accused of murdering a hawker in Mumbai and was subsequently transferred . Now it is known to all after enquiry that the hawker died of cardiac arrest . What if same case is repeated in Kolkata ? Think and think properly .

Famous acting schools of Mumbai , famous acting institutes of India and the famous acting academy of bollywood have no time for such topics . My acting institute  Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  think that apart from imparting acting training , it is also our duty to make our students aware of such happenings .

Mamata Banerjee supporters

West Bengal needs Mamata Banerjee . In fact the nation needs her . And yes , we don’t need CPI-M or CPI at all . They should be consigned in the trash-bins of history .

Understanding Tamil Nadu – [ 1 ]

DSC01182

VAITHEESWARAN KOIL – TAMIL NADU – INDIA           DECEMBER 23 , 2012           11.55 P.M.

When I landed at Chennai Airport on December 21 , 2012 , it marked my 3rd visit to the Southern metropolis . On December 22 , 2012 , when I drove to Vaitheeswaran Koil in the morning , it marked my 2nd visit to the hinterlands of Tamil Nadu .

The political state of Tamil Nadu in India was...

People of my generation always view Tamil Nadu and Tamil people through the prism , which was created in 1967 , when the first Dravidian government was formed in Tamil Nadu under the leadership of C. N. Annadurai .

But if you want to understand Dravid Movement of Tamil Nadu , you have to study the history of Self Respect Movement and Justice Party stablished by E. V. Ramasamy Naicker a.k.a. Periyar . It all started in 1925 , much before 1967 , when Annadurai led D.M.K. [ Dravid Munnetra Kazhagam ] formed the first non – Congress government in Tamil Nadu .

In the history of India , 1925 seems to be a very unique year . In the Tamil Nadu E. V. Ramasamy Naicker ” Periyar ” started his Self Respect Movement and in the same year in Nagpur Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar started R.S.S. [ Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh ] . Periyar’s movement is considered separatist and anti national by many and Dr. Hedgewar’s movement is perceived ultra nationalist by the majority . But it is uncanny that both the movements were started in 1925 .

It is said that Periyar was peeved by the superiority of Brahmins and their dominance in all the departments and strata of Tamil culture and life . He started this movement called Sel Respect and started espousing the cause of non – Brahmin castes of Tamil Nadu . He started breaking idols in the temple , advocated atheism , despised JANEU , the sacred thread and finally gave a call for the boycott of Brahmin priests in the marriages . His espousal of Self Respect Marriage had far – reaching repercussions and he became quite unpopular in rest of the country . His anti – Brahmin crusades drew wide – spread indignation and his opposition of Hindu deity worship was considered as anti Hindu and finally anti India .

Both the Tamilian parties ; Dravid Munnetra Kazhagam [ DMK ] and All India Anna Dravid Munnetra Kazhagam [ AIADMK ] owe their existence to E. V. Ramasamy Naicker ” Periyar ” and his movement . And thus atheism and anti North India and anti Hindi credo became their life lines . And when DMK came to power in 1967 , Anna Durai accepted many things which were espoused by Periyar . Thus in the rest of India people became suspicious and majority started disliking DMK and it anti Hindi , anti God and anti North India policies .

I was definitely misguided by this prism , which I got while studying in Allahabad from 1967 to 1974 . My recent visits have changed my perception of Tamil Nadu , Tamil people and Tamil politics of Dravidian parties .

I will complete this ” Understanding Tamil Nadu ” series in my next blog and would like to share it with all the current students of my acting academy Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  after my return from Tamil Nadu .

150 Years of Swami Vivekananda

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JULY 31 , 2012           11.40 P.M.

As I have stated in my earlier blog about Charles Dickens , I was introduced to the world of books and knowledge by my grandfather . Later on , I was encouraged by my father , who used to buy books for me and saw to it that I should read them . My Maa , who too was a voracious reader , also encouraged me to read good books and magazines and thus a life – long passion started very early in my life .

My father introduced me to the world of Swami Vivekanand . One day he came with a book titled ” UTTISHTHATA JAGRATA ” . I was a book of the lectures of Swami Vivekananda , compiled and edited by Shri Eknath Ranade , a Hindu ideologue and RSS Pracharak .

It was my first brush with the renowned sanyasi of India . I started reading the book and was mesmerized by the sheer beauty of the poetic language and powerful thoughts . His speech in the Parliament of the World’s Religion in Chicago is epitome of lucidity in language . It is something which I have not imagined . It is something which will never be obfuscated from my memory . The words uttered by Swami Vivekananda in his Chicago sermon still keep on ringing in my ears , though I read it many years ago .

After I finished reading ” UTTISHTHATA JAGRATA ” , I bought many books about Swami ji and read them . ” UTTISHTHATA JAGRATA ” and all the other books still adorn my library in my ancestral house at Deoria . I became admirer , follower and a virtual disciple of Swami Vivekananda .

Swami Vivekananda ;  (12 January 1863–4 July 1902), born Narendra Nath Datta  , was a key figure in the introduction of Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the western world , and was credited with raising interfaith awareness , bringing Hinduism to the status of a major world religion in the late 19th century . He was a major force in the revival of Hinduism in India , and contributed to the notion of nationalism in colonial India . He was the chief disciple of the 19th century saint Ramakrishna and the founder of the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission .He will always be known for his inspiring speech beginning with “Sisters and Brothers of America,” through which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893.

Parliament of the World’s Religions opened on 11 September 1893 at the Art Institute of Chicago as part of the World’s Columbian Exposition . On this day Vivekananda gave his first brief address . He represented India and Hinduism , and began his speech with, “Sisters and brothers of America !” .To these words he got a standing ovation from a crowd of seven thousand, which lasted for two minutes . When silence was restored he began his address . He greeted the youngest of the nations in the name of  “the most ancient order of monks in the world , the Vedic order of sannyasins , a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance .” And he quoted two illustrative passages in this relation , from the Bhagavad Gita“As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea , so , O Lord , the different paths which men take , through different tendencies , various though they appear , crooked or straight , all lead to Thee !” and “Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form , I reach him ; all men are struggling through paths that in the end lead to Me .” Despite being a short speech , it voiced the spirit of the Parliament and its sense of universality.

Dr. Barrows, the president of the Parliament said, “India, the Mother of religions was represented by Swami Vivekananda , the Orange-monk who exercised the most wonderful influence over his auditors .”  He attracted widespread attention in the press , which dubbed him as the “Cyclonic monk from India”. The New York Critique wrote, “He is an orator by divine right, and his strong, intelligent face in its picturesque setting of yellow and orange was hardly less interesting than those earnest words, and the rich, rhythmical utterance he gave them.”  The New York Herald wrote, “Vivekananda is undoubtedly the greatest figure in the Parliament of Religions. After hearing him we feel how foolish it is to send missionaries to this learned nation.” The American newspapers reported Swami Vivekananda as “the greatest figure in the parliament of religions” and “the most popular and influential man in the parliament”. The Boston Evening Transcript, reported on 30 September 1893 that Vivekananda was “a great favourite at the parliament…if he merely crosses the platform, he is applauded”. He spoke several more times at the Parliament on topics related to Hinduism and Buddhism and harmony of religions . The parliament ended on 27 September 1893 . All his speeches at the Parliament had one common theme of universality , and emphasised religious tolerance .

Whenever I read above mentioned facts about him or try to visualize his presence in Chicago congregation , a sense of pride engulfs me completely . Adoration for him , which started very early in my life , refuses to subside even today.

I wish to visit his birth place and the place where he was cremated and the Rock memorial at Kanyakumari , which incidentally was spearheaded by Shri Eknath Ranade , whose book ” UTTISHTHATA JAGRATA ” hooked me to Swami ji .

I feel myself lucky to be born in the same country , where Swami ji was born . I feel myself fortunate to follow the tenets of same Hinduism , to which he also subscribed . I am blessed that by writing this blog on his 150th Anniversary , I could claim that I am also a part of the celebration , though insignificant , though just a spec in the scheme of things , but still I am a part of it .

Goosebumps and a strange kind of sensation overpowering me at this time , as I am completing this blog .

[ I have taken some facts and some quotes from Wikipedia . I express my gratitude . ]
