Remembering Krishna Kalle

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MARCH 30, 2015           06.20 P.M.

1

Let me admit that to most of the readers of my blog , the name Krishna Kalle means nothing . Her name doesn’t ring a familiar sound . To general public also , Krishna Kalle remains almost unknown. But for few people like me , who grew in the 60s , Krishna Kalle was a known name in the Hindi film music world. Her name does ring a familiar sound for the music buffs. So when I read about her death, I was saddened. She went unwept and unsung.

She died on March 15, 2015 at the age of 74 in Mumbai.

In the era of Lata Mangeshkar , she , along with Suman Kalyanpur , Mubarak Begam , Kamal Barot and Sharda tried hard to be in the limelight. All the above mentioned five playback singers , who were good in their own way , failed to make any significant mark in the era of a colossus known as Lata Mangeshkar. When even a giant like Asha Bhosle was also struggling to make her mark, what would anyone expect from the likes of Krishna Kalle , Suman Kalyanpur , Mubarak Begam , Kamal Barot and Sharda ?

For me Krishna Kalle is synonymous with few hit songs of 60s and early 70s. Meri Hasraton Ki Duniya  , her duet with Mohammad Rafi in a film called  ” Gaal Gulabi Nain Sharabi ” [ 1974 ]   and Hume Toh Maar Diya  , a duet with Mahendra Kapoor from the film ” Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain ” [ 1966 ] are still fresh in my memory. For the connoisseurs of old Hindi film songs, these are unforgettable gems. Other famous films of that era , which have her memorable songs ,  are : Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain  [ 1966 ] , Bambai Raat Ki Bahon Mein [ 1967 ] , Raaz [ 1967 ] , Naunihal [ 1967 ] , Shikar [ 1968 ] , Sati Sulochana [ 1969 ] and Gaal Gulabi Nain Sharabi  [ 1974 ]

She was born in Karwar. As her father were serving at Kanpur, she completed her schooling from there . She got the sanskar of Hindi and Urdu over there. At the age of 16, she started singing at Kanpur Radio Station. She sung in various Yatra singeet mahotsav in Uttar Pradesh and got popularity. In 1957, she was honoured with national level youth singing awards by India’s first president Rajendra Prasad and first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The following year, she bagged the All India Sugam Sangeet Award first prize , K.L. Sehgal Memorial’s Golden Voice Award and many others. And after this she got a job with All India Radio in 1960.

Arun Date first heard her voice, when she visited Mumbai . He introduced her to music director Yashwant Dev. This started her journey as Marathi singer.

She was active in the Hindi film industry for about a decade from 1960s to the 1970s. She sang over 200 Bollywood songs, 100 Marathi movie songs, 100 bhajans, ghazals and devotional songs . She also released non-film albums with famous singers like Manna Dey, Mohammed Rafi.

Krishna Kalle has been named for the ‘Lata Mangeshkar Award for Lifetime Achievement’ instituted by the Maharashtra government. Some other personalities who bagged the ‘Lata Mangeshkar Award for Lifetime Achievement’ include : Manna Dey, Anil Biswas, Sudhir Phadke, Khayyam, Mahendra Kapoor, Suman Kalyanpur, Sulochana Chavan, Kalyanji (Shah), Manik Verma and Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Thus getting the above mentioned prestigious award shows her calibre as an artiste.

After her death, I tried to remember other hit songs of Krishna Kalle , apart from above mentioned two ,  but my memory failed me. Suddenly I found a website, where link of some of the songs are given . URL of the website is :

https://www.lyricsbogie.com/singer/krishna-kalle

Here I am posting links of some of her songs from that website :

Songs Sung by Krishna Kalle

It is sad that today’s generation doesn’t know or remember Krishna Kalle. It is very easy for any upstart to write what Shabana Azmi says about Dilip Kumar and post it on his timeline . They both are legends. everyone knows everything about them . But knowing and writing about a lesser known artiste like Krishna Kalle is the job of a fan , a lover of old film songs and a connoisseur. For people like me she was one of the representatives of the golden era of Hindi film music.

Farooque Sheikh : Har Mulaqat Ka Anjam Judai Kyon Hai?

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JANUARY 06, 2014           00.15 A. M.

Farooque Sheikh

25 March 1948 − 27 December 2013

I was at Vaitheeswarankoil in the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu for my annual vacation / pilgrimage from December 24 to December 31. On 27th when I checked my twitter account I was shocked beyond belief. It was full of the news of Farooque Sheikh’s untimely death. 65 is no age to leave the world. But alas! it happened in the case of Farooque Sheikh. He was in Dubai with his family for New Year vacation when the end came. He died of cardiac arrest.

During " Gaman " Days

During ” Gaman ” Days

My first memory of Farooque Sheikh goes back to 1978. I saw ” Gaman ” in the Amar Jyoti Talkies of Deoria, my home town. It’s swan song ” seene me jalan, aankhon me toofan sa kyon hai ; is shaher me har shakhs pareshan sa kyon hai ……. ” is still fresh in my memory. When I came out of the hall, I was amused. I felt that Farooque Sheikh was an unusual kind of leading man. He was not a typical Hindi film hero but his screen persona endured in my memory. After ” Gaman ” , I watched highly successful ” Noorie ” and the image of Farooque Sheikh became a permanent part of my life. Then came ” Umrao Jaan ” and ” Chashme Buddoor “, both in 1981 and this unconventional hero, with his wonderful diction, pleasant demeanor and smiling face became one of my all time favourites.

As Nawab in Umrao Jaan

As Nawab in Umrao Jaan

His notable films are ; ” Garam Hawa ” [ 1973 ] , ” Shatranj Ke Khiladi ” [ 1977 ] , ” Gaman ” [ 1978 ] , ” Noorie ” [ 1979 ] , ” Umrao Jaan ” [ 1981 ] , ” Chashme Buddoor ” [ 1981 ] , ” Saath Saath ” [ 1982 ] , ” Bazaar ” [ 1982 ] , ” Katha ” [ 1983 ] , ” Rang Birangi ” [ 1983 ] , ” Faasale ” [ 1985 ] , ” Ek Pal ” [ 1986 ] , ” Biwi Ho To Aisi ” [ 1988 ] , ” Maya Memsaab ” [ 1992 ] , ” Lahore ” [ 2009 ] , ” Shanghai ” [ 2012 ] , ” Listen ….. Amaya ” [ 2013 ] , ” Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani ” [ 2013 ] , & ” Club 60 ” [ 2013 ]. His last film ” Youngistan ” is yet to get released.

He won the 2010 National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for Lahore.

In the late 90s, Farooq Sheikh acted in a number of television serials. Most famous of them are ” Chamatkar ” on Sony and ” Ji Mantriji ” on Star plus and ” Shrikant “, which was aired from 1985 to 1986. He compered in the Binny Double or Quits Quiz contest which was telecast over Vividh Bharathi. His also anchored the iconic TV show, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai (Season 1).

As TV Host of Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai with Shah Rukh Khan

As TV Host of Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai with Shah Rukh Khan

He performed on stage in famous productions such as Tumhari Amrita [ 1992 ], alongside Shabana Azmi, directed by Feroz Abbas Khan. This poignant playTumhari Amrita  ” [ 1992 ] completed its 20-year run on 26 February, 2012. A sequel to this play was staged in India in 2004 titled “Aapki Soniya” with Farooq Sheikh and Sonali Bendre as main leads. He also directed ” Aazar Ka Khwab “, an adaptation of Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion in 2004.

I became an addict of his TV show, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai (Season 1). When I watched him on stage alongside Shabana Azmi, in famous productions ” Tumhari Amrita ” [ 1992 ], directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, I was mesmerized.

During " Tumhari Amrita " Days

During ” Tumhari Amrita ” Days

Years ago I played a small part in a play called ” SAARE JAHAN SE ACHCHHA “, Director by Aamir Raza Hussain . Farooque Sahab was supposed to be the narrator of the play. He couldn’t do the play because of some prior commitments and I lost this opportunity to be with him on the stage.

2

It is sad that he went too soon. And he left us when he was on the comeback trail.

Insignia of Brand VIDUR

On behalf of all the students and staff of VIDUR Acting Institute , which is known as Vidur’s Kreating Charakters  , I offer my condolences to the family of Farooque Sheikh and all the near and dear ones.

VIDUR Editing Studio , VIDUR Club and VIDUR Theatre would also like to join them in this hour of grief.

May his soul rest in peace!

[ I have taken list of his films, TV serials and plays from Wikipedia. I express profound gratitude. ]

A Tale of Two Acting Institutes : FTII & NSD

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           OCTOBER 28 , 2012           01.15 A.M.

I start my blog with salutations to Shri Roshan Taneja , Ex Head of FTII [ Film & Television Institute of India ] and Ebrahim Alkazi , Ex Head of NSD [ National School of Drama ] .

With Shri Roshan Taneja in His Office

With Shri Roshan Taneja in His Office

Then I proceed to submit that apart from above mentioned two giants of Acting Training , I don’t like the present dispensation of these so-called premiere acting institutes of India .

Let me take their case one by one .

NATIONAL SCHOOL OF DRAMA :

=================================

This so-called premiere school boasts of the alumni , which could be the dream of any Acting Trainer of India . This famous theatre training institute was established in 1959 in New Delhi by the Sangeet Natak Akademi . In 1975 it became an independent school .

National School of Drama

National School of Drama (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

First batch of NSD was passed out in 1961 . After this Ebrahim Alkazi took over the reigns and helmed the affair of the school from 1962 to 1977 . It was the golden period of NSD .

In 2008 , though the NSD celebrated its Golden Jubilee , but the shine  , the sheen had gone . I fail to understand the attitude of the present day students of NSD . They think that since they have done an acting course from NSD , so the whole world should invariably acknowledge their eminence . They behave as if whole universe is indebted to them because they have done two years training in NSD . Their immortal arrogance precede their mortal body . This is precisely the reason that they are not very successful in Hindi Film Industry .

FILM & TELEVISION INSTITUTE OF INDIA :

============================================

This premier film acting institute was established in 1960 by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting , Government of India . The present campus is situated in the holy precincts of erstwhile Prabhat Film Company , Pune .

Notable alumni

I do agree that this an enviable list . Any Acting Trainer of India can die for such illustrious students . But what is the present condition ? Why this institute is unable to churn such illustrious students any more ? What happened after Shri Roshan Taneja’s departure ?

Can any one answer ? NSD and FTII were successful with enviable record during the tenure of Shri Ebrahim Alkazi and Shri Roshan Taneja respectively . After their departure mediocrity started ruling and these glorious institutions became just buildings , just structures .

Great institutions are governed by great minds , giant personalities . They can’t be run by upstarts and dwarfs . I can’t comment much about NSD but I know the root cause of the deterioration and subsequent demise of FTII . After departure of Shri Roshan Taneja , every Tom , Dick & Harry rushed to FTII and became Acting Trainers . In front of 10 / 20 captive students they proclaimed themselves as the incarnation of Constantin Stanislavski . People managing the affairs of FTII had and have no vision . They employed every wannabe , every upstart , every so-called veteran actors as Acting Coach and these frustrated Dilip Kumars and Amitabh Bachchans ruined the great FTII .

The decadence is apparent , degeneration is palpable and death is imminent . I have one student in the current batch of Vidur’s Kreating Charakters , who has completed two years acting course from FTII . She is beautiful and is definitely talented . But because of wrong training , she is struggling in my class . She is not at fault . Fault lies at the door of their trainers , who proclaim themselves as the reincarnation of Constantin Stanislavski and dish out half – baked knowledge . It never happened during the tenure of Shri Roshan Taneja .

Is there any remedy ? Will these two institutes be able to come out of ICU ? Can there be another Ebrahim Alkazi and Roshan Taneja ?

On behalf of myself and on behalf of all the students of Vidur’s Kreating Charakters and whole family of Vidur’s Kreating Charakters , I pray to the almighty for the long life of NSD and FTII ! May the future be more glorious and shining than the illustrious past !

[ List of the alumni of FTII is taken from Wikipedia . I express my gratitude . ]

A. K. Hangal & His Communist Comrades

Last month I was traveling. While going out of Mumbai, I came to know about pitiable condition of veteran actor Shri Avtar Krishn Hangal, aka A. K. Hangal. I was saddened and felt ashamed that such a veteran actor should be almost begging for his medical and other expenses. When I wrote an obituary to Nalini Jayawant, I mentioned that it is duty of CINTAA [ Cine & TV Artistes’ Association ] to look after its ailing members and aging veterans who have no one to look after them. Nalini Jayawant died in her bungalow and world came to know about it after 3 days. There was no one in her family and her body was wrapped in a bed sheet and was taken away by BMC people. CINTAA maintained an enigmatic silence, Now barely a month passed and tragedy struck the industry again. 90 years old actor A. K. Hangal’s son gave a statement and sought help for his ailing and aging father, who is unable to earn because of his advance age and failing health.

I saw Hangal Sahab’s photo and read about his economic condition and was aghast. Film fraternity ran to his rescue in full force. His colleagues and filmmakers, with whom he had worked , immediately donated money and pledged support. Some filmmakers also came forward to help, even though they hadn’t worked with Hangal Sahab.

It was very heartening and satisfying that the industry rose as one family and magnanimously helped one of its infirm and ailing veteran member, who is unable to earn because of his advancing age.. Government of Maharashtra also pitched in and a decent sum was given to Mr. Vijay Hangal, son of Hangal Sahab.

Only worrying part in this episode was the behaviour of his communist colleagues. Hangal Sahab is a member of Communist Party of India. He was an active member of IPTA [ Indian Peoples Theatre Association ] also and worked in many plays for them. Throughout his active years he supported them wholeheartedly and they conveniently forgot him at the time of his need. There was no clamour for his help from the communists. No word of support at his hour of distress was heard from the comrades. There was baffling and intriguing silence in the camp of comrades. When this veteran actor was fighting for his survival, another prominent proletariat [ ? ] Shabana Azmi was busy organizing a fashion show with the help of a prominent fashion designer Manish Malhotra. Because of her standing in the industry, she was able to have 39 prominent Hindi film stars for her show. Bourgeoisie [ ? ] like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and Mr. Aamir Khan rushed to help Hangal Sahab and a proletariat [ ? ] like Shabana Azmi was busy inviting 39 prominent stars to walk the ramp for Manish Malhotra.

May I ask the reason of this silence? May I know the cause for this apathy? It is shameful and disgusting. Communists are born opportunists. They use people and when they find them worthless, they dump them nicely. This what they have done to Hangal Sahab.

Thank God ! India is yet to become a communist nation.  Thank God ! USSR [ Union of Soviet Socialist Republic ] does not exist any more. Thank God ! Lenin and Stalin have been nicely consigned to the dustbins of history. Thank God ! Dictatorship of the proletariat is not the norm in our society.
