Year End Musings : Vidur Acting Institute in 2015

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JANUARY 03, 2016           11.00 P.M.

I wrote Year End Musing in 2010 , 2011 & 2012. In those days I used to write about the Hindi films and Hindi film industry in general. Then I thought that there are many websites and many film analysts and trade pundits doing the same job. So what is the need of me writing the same stuff. Therefore I didn’t write Year End Musings in 2013 & 2014.

But this year it occurred to me that I should chronicle yearly success stories and accomplishments of Vidur Acting Institute. In this field, where veterans like Shri Roshan Taneja and Sushri Ashha Chandra are almost retired, there are only few genuine ones left doing their jobs ethically.

This arena is now dominated by few upstarts, who can go to any length to get their prey. They can make false claims, they can Photoshop some pictures and present it as the proof of their recent successes and accomplishments. They have various fee structures of the same course to lure and hoodwink gullible out-of-town students and finally they give free demo class, collect students, click pictures and post it as the new batch of their tottering institute. But it is their moral and ethical values. If they are not bothered, why should I?

I don’t have to compete with them. 4 generations of NEW AGE Hindi film actors are my students. They are :

HRITIK ROSHAN – KAREENA KAPOOR

RANBIR KAPOOR – KATRINA KAIF

VARUN DHAWAH – ALIA BHATT

PULKIT SAMRAT – URVASHI RAUTELA

Apart from them, I have trained modern-day Telugu super stars like ; ANUSHKA SHETTY , ALLU ARJUN , NAG CHAITANYA  & RAM CHARAN. Current Bengali super star DEV is also my student. Why should I lower my standard to the level of some foul-mouth skunks, if I have such an enviable list. I have decided to paint a true picture of my yearly accomplishments with facts and figures. So this year onwards I will keep on posting Year End Musings.

Tina Ahuja – My 11th Student To Make Debut In 20 Months

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JULY 05, 2015           11.55 P.M.

It is first Sunday of July 2015. Sunday brings few welcome changes in my daily 18-hour-long-work-schedule. It is the day of late wake up call. It is the day of reading many newspapers and getting soaked in the vortex called Indian politics. And yes, it is the day of the posting of my blog.

Tina Ahuja, better known as Narmmadaa, made her debut this Friday with a film called ” Second Hand Husband “. She is film actor Govinda’s daughter and a student of mine.

I am not an accomplished chartered accountant but as soon as films of my students get released, I start calculating like a diligent, hard-working local bania. And when I calculated this time, I found to my astonishment that she is the 11th student of mine, who made debut in the last 20 months. [ NOVEMBER 2013 – JULY 2015 ]

I know that it will cause severe heartburn to few startups, who think themselves as thespians and claim to be accomplished acting trainers. Mumbai has many acting institutes and acting trainers. Few like ROSHAN TANEJA, ASHHA CHANDRA, BARRY JOHN and ANUPAM KHER are very reputed. They don’t have any problem with me and my success. They have their own successes to celebrate.

There is another one, who was reputed once upon a time. But has resorted to gimmicks and cheap tactics to keep himself relevant. Slashing your fee and advertising it publicly shows the desperation. Once upon a time he used to demand and command huge sum as fee but recently slashed it by half. It is now almost equivalent of my fee. Is it not desperation? Would you like to know the reason? He has failed to produce a single star after 2010.

And yes, there are few others. [ I don’t want to make them immortal by mentioning their names. ] Tucked in the lanes and by-lanes of Mhada, they proclaim to be acting trainers of repute but are nowhere in the scene. They will be troubled a lot by my list of ” 11 debuts in 20 months “. They claim to impart hard-core training. May I demand to know, what is the quality of this hard-core training, which can’t produce even a single star worth the name in these years? I think I should leave it up to the general public to decide.

3 years back I wrote in one of my blog post that hazy picture will not remain forever. Deceit will die its own death. Things will be clear one day when dust will settle down. An egoist startup, who thinks very high of himself, made fun of me and my statement. Within 3 years I am making public my latest list of accomplishments. I notice deafening silence from the other side of the fence. The thespian ( ? ) , who was roaring 3 years back, is conspicuous by his stoic ( ? ) silence. I guess he is maimed and mutilated considerably. I pity his toothless existence.

For public perusal, here is the complete list of my 9 students with pictures. I don’t have photos of Preeti Desai and Ayesha Khanna at this juncture. I will post them later.

My 25-Year-Long Journey : From Kareena Kapoor to Alia Bhatt

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           AUGUST 08, 2014           08.50 P.M.

My fascination with Hindi film heroines started in mid 60s. In the dark environs of Amar Jyoti Talkies, Deoria, my rendezvous with Hindi cinema took place with Rajendra Kumar and B. Saroja Devi starrer Silver Jubilee hit  ” Sasural ” [ 1961 ] . B. Saroja Devi, though not well-known to Hindi cine-goers, was almost alien to me. But after watching the film, I was unable to forget her. Her elegant persona, her well-kept figure, her chiselled face enticed me for weeks and months. She was the first icon of my childhood fancy.

Few years later in 1967, after appearing in High School exams, I watched Dilip Kumar and  Vyjayanthimala, starrer golden jubilee film ” Ganga Jumna “. B. Saroja Devi and  Vyjayanthimala, to my utter surprise, looked almost similar. I was hooked to Vyjayanthimala and my fascination for the film heroines got fortified.

After passing High School, I went to Allahabad for further studies. My true rendezvous with Hindi cinema started in all earnest in Allahabad. I started watching films regularly. I got acquainted with the heroines of early Hindi cinema. I was particularly enamoured by Devika Rani and Kanan Devi. [ Who can forget Devika Rani’s ………. MAIN BAN KI CHIDIA BAN KE BAN-BAN DOLOON RE ……….( ” Achhut Kanya ” – 1936 ) and Kanan Devi’s ………….. YE DUNIYA ,YE DUNIYA TOOFAN MAIL ……… ( Jawaab ” – 1942 ) ? Few years later I watched two earlier films of Kanan Devi; P. C. Barua starrer ” Mukti ” [ 1937 ] and K. L. Sehgal starrer ” Street Singer ” [ 1938 ]. Though they were the heroines of my father’s generation but their etherial beauty, their sweet voice enthralled me and fascinated me during my adolescent and growing up years in Allahabad.

Later on I got acquainted with the works of other highly successful actresses of the bygone era. The list included Nargis, Suraiya, Nalini Jayawant,  Meena Kumari, Madhubala, Nimmi and Geeta Bali. These heroines ruled the golden era of Hindi films. But even they belonged to the earlier era.

My era included highly successful and enchanting heroines like;  Nutan, Vyjayanthimala, Waheeda Rehman , Nanda and Mala Sinha .

I became a die-hard fan of Waheeda Rehman after watching her films Pyaasa (1957) and Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) . After watching Raj Kapoor‘s Awaara (1951) and of Mehboob Khan‘s Mother India (1957), Nargis, also became one of my all time favourites. Vijay Bhatt‘s Baiju Bawra (1952), made me a fan of  Meena Kumari.  K. Asif‘s Mughal-e-Azam (1960) made Madhubala my eternal favourite.

Then times changed. My journey with cinema matured. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, actresses like Sadhna, Saira Banu, Sharmila Tagore, Mumtaz and Asha Parekh ruled the Hindi film world.

In the early 70s  Amitabh Bachchan, era started in the Hindi film industry. Actresses from this era included Hema Malini, Jaya BachchanRekha,  Zeenat Aman and Dimple Kapadia. I adored these heroines but frankly, I was neither enchanted or enamoured by them. Mysterious quality of the earlier heroines was missing. Or may be I became mature and the mystique slowly evaporated.

In 1975, I completed my studies in Allahabad and returned to my native place, Deoria. A 14-year-long second phase of my life started in Deoria.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the pendulum swung back towards family centric romantic musicals with the success of Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988) . Incidentally this was the last film, which I watched in Deoria.

I moved to Bombay [ now Mumbai ] in 1989. This was the year when Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) got released and changed the film-watching experience forever.

Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Dil (1990), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), making stars out of a new generation and actresses such as Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla and Kajol . In that point of time actresses such as Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, Aishwarya Rai also arrived on the scene.  Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor too appearing in popular comedy films .

Furthermore, this decade marked the entry of new performers in art house and independent films like Satya (1998), directed by Ram Gopal Varma and written by Anurag Kashyap. Manisha Koirala, Tabu and Urmila Matondkar were the heroines of this generation.

So it was a long association with the silver screen heroines. From Kanan Devi to Kajol and Karisma Kapoor , I watched everyone, got fascinated by them and silently admired their etherial beauty. But never in my wildest dream did I imagine that one day I would train few of the present day ruling Divas of Hindi cinema. After 25 year stay in Mumbai, when I look back, I reminisce my by-gone days with astonishment. I am bewildered with my accomplishment.

In 1994 two heroines trained by me made their debut in Hindi films. They are Sonali Bendre in ” Aag ” [ 1994 ] and Divya Dutta in ” Ishq Mein Jeena Ishq Mein Marna ” [ 1994 ] . It uncanny that 1994 was the year when Devika Rani died. Kanan Devi bid us adieu two years earlier in 1992.

My childhood icons left this world in 1994 and present day icons, trained by me , made their entry in 1994. It is strange. It is quirky. It is really uncanny. After debut of Sonali Bendre and Divya Dutta in 1994, flood-gate of the newcomers got opened and it has now submerged the Hindi film industry. I present a list of some of the epoch-making new era Hindi film Divas, who got trained by me :

Kareena Kapoor : ” Refugee ” [ 2000 ] = DEBUT

Priyanka Chopra : ” The Hero ” [ 2002 ] = DEBUT

SONAM KAPOOR : ” Saawariya ” [ 2007 ] = DEBUT

Anushka Sharma : ” Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi ” [ 2008 ] = DEBUT

Katrina Kaif :  ” Raajneeti ” [ 2010]

ALIA BHATT : ” Student Of The Year ” [ 2012 ] = DEBUT

KALKI KOECHLIN : ” Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani ” [ 2013 ]

URVASHI RAUTELA : ” Singh Saab The Great ” [ 2013 ] = DEBUT

In the end I would like to submit that the above mentioned list is almost endless. I have mentioned very famous names only. As I watch Alia Bhatt making rapid strides, and other newcomers trained by me making their entry in the tinsel town, my heart beats fast with pride.

Some of the biggest star sons / daughters are currently being trained by me and they are going to make their debut in 2015.

So the SAGA CONTINUES !! Dust settles down. Sun shines brilliantly. And the World { excluding few egoistic nay-sayers } watches with awe, admiration and amazement.

Celebrating ” Gulaab Gang ”

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MARCH 10 , 2014           01.20 A.M.

I was eagerly waiting for ” Gulaab Gang “ to release . I am an admirer of Madhuri Dixit and desperately wanted to see her on-screen with Juhi Chawla . But the true cause of my excitement and wait was something else .

” Gulaab Gang “ will always be an important film for me because it features two students of mine . One is Tanvi Rao , who is an actor and an accomplished danseuse and the second student is Pawni Pandey , who is the playback singer in the film and her song ” ………………… Sharm Laaj Moh Maar Kar , Hata De Ye Pallu Jhaad Kar ……………. “  is filmed on Madhuri Dixit .

So the wait was on and it ended on March 07 , 2014 , when the much awaited film ” Gulaab Gang “ was released .

Tanvi Rao and her father Shri Hari Prasad ji visited me two years back , when Tanvi was signed for ” Gulaab Gang ” . I was stunned to see a small girl sitting in front of me and talking to me in supreme confidence . I was shocked to know that she was going to be a co-actor in the film and will perform with Madhuri Dixit . Time was less and she was in Mumbai only for few days . It was a challenge for me and as usual I don’t shun challenges and responsibilities . So I started training her immediately .

I must make it clear in writing that Tanvi , the always smiling cute girl , is very hard-working student and extremely disciplined artiste . I thank her parents for inculcating this culture in her and giving her such great values and ethics , which is fast vanishing from the present day generation . She completed the training and along with her father , went back to her native place Mangalore . But they always remained in touch .

Tanvi , along with her father , came to meet me again and seek my blessings before the start of the shooting . It is so heart warming . It is so unlike some of the students , who make it a point not to acknowledge their teachers before shooting or after the release of their films . Tanvi and her father were full of respect and gratitude , though I had only done my job . Yet they came to me to seek my blessings . It brought tears in my eyes . I was overwhelmed .

I must make it clear that apart from acting in ” Gulaab Gang “ , Tanvi Rao is an accomplished dancer and she has toured the world for her highly successful dance performances on stage . She has won many awards .

My second student in ” Gulaab Gang “ is Pawni Pandey , who has sung the song ” ………………… Sharm Laaj Moh Maar Kar , Hata De Ye Pallu Jhaad Kar ……………. “  . She is currently getting trained in the Batch No. 82 of  VIDUR Acting Institute .

She started as a participant in ” Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs ” in 2006 and was a finalist and stood at 5th position . She started her singing career with Sohail Khan’s film ” Kissan ” [ 2009 ] .

Since she is in the current batch , I will talk about her later .

In the Silver Jubilee year of my Acting Training career , ” Gulaab Gang “ is the 4th film in 5 months in which my 5 students made debut . 5 debuts in just 5 months is incredible . The list is envious .

Urvashi Rautela ……….. ” Singh Saab The Great ” [ November 2013 ]

Daisy Shah ……………….. ” Jai Ho “ [ January 2014 ]

Preeti Desai ………………. ” One By Two ” [ January 2014 ]

Tanvi Rao …………………. ” Gulaab Gang “ [ March 2014 ]

Pawni Pandey ……………. ” Gulaab Gang ” [ March 2014 ]

” Gulaab Gang “ is doing quite well at the box office . I am posting tweets of trade analyst Mr. Taran Adarsh to show that among the 3 releases of this week , ” Gulaab Gang “ is the highest earner .

Vidur’s Film Diary – February 2014

2
MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MARCH 01, 2014   11.40 P.M.
As I have stated in the January edition of Vidur’s Film Diary , 2014 is the 25th year of my acting training career. This Silver Jubilee Year is bringing lots of accolades and jubilation to Vidur Acting Institute . It is unfolding several unseen vistas in my professional career as well as personal life.
It all started with Sunny Deol starrer ” Singh Saab The Great ” . Urvashi Rautela , a student of Vidur Acting Institute , made her debut in the film. Then came Salman Khan starrer ” Jai Ho “ . It becomes the first ever film to have 8 students of mine working in one film . Daisy Shah made her debut in this film. After these two films , it was turn of an Abhay Deol film called ” One By Two ” . Preeti Desai [ Miss Great Britain 2006 ] played lead in the film . Then came ” Highway “ . Naina Trivedi , [ a FTII alumni of 2009 batch ] and another student of Vidur Acting Institute , played an important role in it. It is needless to say that Alia Bhatt is the main lead of “ Highway “ and she is also my students . Thus my two students were there in critically acclaimed and box office hit film  ” Highway ” .
Vidur Club News Video , an audio – visual wing of Vidur Acting Institute  , captures this momentous phase of my career and beautifully documents and amply illustrates the accomplishments. I am posting links of the two videos :
1 : ” Jai Ho ” :  http://youtu.be/cZzBa4sHXMQ
2 : ” One By Two ” :  http://youtu.be/0WCMfQiPdGI
It all happened in the span of just 4 months. March 2014 is going to be more promising , more exciting. But before March comes heralding glorious accomplishments, let us have a look on February 2014.

Apart from above mentioned 4 films and my new students making debuts in them , my 11 old students appeared in 07 films and 04 students appeared in 05 Ads . Thus total number of old students working in the month of February comes to 15 .

It is not a mean accomplishment considering the fact that by each passing day acting institutes are mushrooming in every nook and corner of Mumbai. There are some genuine institutes and there are few fake institutes.  While I am openly documenting my achievements , there is deafening silence on the other front . Fakers of faking facts , gaali gurus of facebook acting institute , veteran (?) trainers of blink & miss starlets , crafty craftsmen of craft-less actors are conspicuous by their silence . I have always maintained that one day dust will settle down and everything will become crystal clear. Dust now is settling down rapidly and spineless warriors are standing naked . Their true worth is out in the battlefield . And yes , world is watching .
