Year End Musings : Vidur Acting Institute in 2015

I wrote Year End Musing in 2010 , 2011 & 2012. In those days I used to write about the Hindi films and Hindi film industry in general. Then I thought that there are many websites and many film analysts and trade pundits doing the same job. So what is the need of me writing the same stuff. Therefore I didn’t write Year End Musings in 2013 & 2014.

But this year it occurred to me that I should chronicle yearly success stories and accomplishments of Vidur Acting Institute. In this field, where veterans like Shri Roshan Taneja and Sushri Ashha Chandra are almost retired, there are only few genuine ones left doing their jobs ethically.

This arena is now dominated by few upstarts, who can go to any length to get their prey. They can make false claims, they can Photoshop some pictures and present it as the proof of their recent successes and accomplishments. They have various fee structures of the same course to lure and hoodwink gullible out-of-town students and finally they give free demo class, collect students, click pictures and post it as the new batch of their tottering institute. But it is their moral and ethical values. If they are not bothered, why should I?

I don’t have to compete with them. 4 generations of NEW AGE Hindi film actors are my students. They are :

Apart from them, I have trained modern-day Telugu super stars like ; ANUSHKA SHETTY , ALLU ARJUN , NAG CHAITANYA & RAM CHARAN. Current Bengali super star DEV is also my student. Why should I lower my standard to the level of some foul-mouth skunks, if I have such an enviable list. I have decided to paint a true picture of my yearly accomplishments with facts and figures. So this year onwards I will keep on posting Year End Musings.

2 – AD = My 49 students worked as Brand Ambassadors of various products in 2015.

100 CRORE CLUB : 2015

Till date 35 Hindi films have earned 100 crore or more at the box office. 1 film is in 3oo crore club, 1 in 250 crore, 3 in 200 crore, 7 in 150 crore and 23 are in 100 crore club. Out of these 35 films, my 81 students are there in 32 films. Only ” Ghajini “, ” Holiday ” & ” Ek Villain ” are the films, which have no students of mine. In this field my success rate is 92 % .

Vidur’s Film Diary – May 2014

This is the 61st edition of Vidur’s Film Diary. 5 long, momentous and eventful years have passed since I started writing Vidur’s Film Diary to chronicle my monthly achievements in the film industry. I post Vidur’s Film Diary in the first week of every month. I am ecstatic that I did not miss a single month till date.

On this historic day, I must express it with profound sadness that the 61st month, i.e. May 2014 is the worst month of my acting training career till date. Though 17 films got released in May, but representation of my students is negligible. For the first time only 04 students of mine got work in this month. But what can one do if ” JHAND ” films are being made? What can one do if a ” JHAND ” newcomer hits the screen, becomes butt of jokes and is universally panned and ridiculed by critics and general public alike for his ” JHAND ” acting, but is praised to the skies by his equally ” JHAND ” trainers? In such ” JHAND ” times it is advisable to keep quiet and wait for one of the biggest debuts of 2014 and 4 most outstanding debuts of 2015.

A known character artiste of many hits and super hit films, Sudhir a.k.a. Bhagwandas Mulchand Luthria died in Mumbai.

A. Nageswara Rao Garu : From Paddy Field to Super Stardom

A. Nageswara Rao , a.k.a. ANR Garu died on January 22 in Hyderabad at the age of 91 . I was saddened and distraught after hearing the news. It opened floodgates and brought many memories of ANR Garu to my mind. In 1990, when I was training his grandsons; Nag Chaitanya and Sushanth Anumolu, I came to know many intimate stories about him , became privy to many chapters of his life and thus became an ardent fan and a lifelong admirer.

Later on I also met his son Nagarjuna, the super-star of Telugu film. He presented me a DVD of ” Devadasu ” [ 1953 ] , the Telugu film version of Sharat Chandra’s immortal classic ” Devdas “. I watched the film. The admiration for ANR Garu got fortified.

I first came to know about ANR Garu during my Allahabad days. I read a comment made by none other than Dilip Kumar. I watched Bimal Roy’s ” Devdas ” [ 1955 ] and was mesmerized by Dilip Kumar’s performance . Dilip Kumar played Devdas and became immortal as the tragedy king of Hindi cinema. When a journalist asked him about his brilliant portrayal of Devdas, he said, ” there is only one Devadasu, and that is Nageswara Rao.” I was mesmerized by Dilip Kumar’s performance and here he is saying that there is only one Devdas and that is A. Nageswara Rao . I was puzzled.

I started searching about ANR Garu but in those pre – google days it was not very easy. With great difficulty I gathered some knowledge. I came to know that he played Devdas in Telugu film ” Devadasu ” [ 1953 ]. It was two years before Dilip Kumar’s ” Devdas ” [ 1955 ] .

ANR Garu, along with NTR Garu [ Nandamuri Tarak Rama Rao ] , dominated the Telugu cinema and Telugu film scene like a colossus. From paddy fields, he strode into the field of fine arts through theatre. He became a famous stage artiste, specialising, in playing female characters, because women at that time were prohibited from acting.

A. Nageswara Rao Garu was discovered, by chance, by the prominent film producer, Ghantasala Balaramaiah, at the Vijayawada railway station. He was then cast in the film Dharmapatni. Since then, he starred in several films of various genres during his 75-year acting career^.

Rao won three Filmfare Best Telugu Actor Awards during his acting career. He was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, for his contribution to Indian cinema, and is a recipient of the Dada Saheb Phalke Award.

Incidentally ” Manam “ , his last film has his grandson Nag Chaitanya playing a stellar role along with his grandfather and his father Nagarjuna .

After successful January 2011 , February was quite dull for the industry . And March was simply disastrous . First quarter is gone without any great success. No big releases because of the World Cup , no great success because of the bad films. There were just 6 releases in March and that too insignificant ones .

GOGA KAPOOR : A very prominent villain of Hindi film industry Goga Kapoor breathed his last on March 03, 2011. He was 70 at the time of his death. He began his life in Delhi and during his college days , he used to work in stage plays. In Shakespeare’s ” Othello ” , he played the main protagonist and Mr. Amitabh Bachchan played a supporting role. Later on when he joined films , he did more than 20 films with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan as his arch antagonist.

His first film was ” Jwala “ in 1971. He came to prominence with B. R. Chopra’s tele serial ” Mahabharat “ , where he played Kans. His other films were ” Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak ” , ” Zanjeer ” , ” Hera Pheri ” , ” Satte Pe Satta ” , ” Yaarana ” ,” Agneepath ” , ” Shakti ” , ” Coolie ” , ” Toofan ” , ” Patthar Ke Phool ” , ” Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa ” and many more. He workrd in some international projects also. In total he worked in more than 500 films.

He is survived by his wife and 3 daughters . I have trained his younger daughter Payal Kapoor, who is a wonderful actor.

NAVIN NISCHOL : This FTII , Pune graduate , a Gold Medalist and a dashing hero of 70s , died of heart attack while going to Pune along with his friends. On the fateful day of March 19 , 2011, he started his journey in the morning. But died of heart attack before reaching Pune. He was 65 at the time of his death.

He made his debut in 1970 in Mohan Sehgal’s ” Sawan Bhadon “ with Rekha. The film was a super hit of the year and it stablished Navin Nischol’s career. He , later on , worked in many hits including ” Parwana “ , where Mr. Amitabh Bachchan was playing villain’s role , while Navin Nischol was the main protagonist with Yogita Bali.

” Dhund ” , ” Hanste Zakhm ” , ” Buddha Mil Gaya ” , ” Woh Main Nahin ” and ” Victoria No. 203 “ were his other immensely successful films. Later on from 1980, he worked as character artiste in films like ” The Burning Train ” . ” Khosla Ka Ghosla ” and ” Break Ke Baad “. The last mentioned one was his last film.

He was one of the few major actors, who started working in TV serials quite early. His most popular serial was ” Dekh Bhai Dekh “ .

BOB CHRISTO : An actor of Australian origin , Bob Christo , died in the morning of February 20, 2011 in Bengaluru. He was 70 at the time of his death. He was introduced to Hindi film world by Sanjay Khan in his film ” Abdullah “ . Later on he even worked opposite Mr. Amitabh Bachchan in several hit films like ; ” Namak Halal ” , ” Agneepath ” , ” Kaalia ” , ” Nastik ” and ” Mard ” . His other hit films were ; ” Qurbani ” and immensely popular ” Mr. India ” . Kids used to love his dialogue in ” Mr. India “ , ‘ Indian God bolta hai………. maarta bhi hai …… “ . His other memorable role was in the epic serial ” The Great Maratha ” as Ahmad Shah Abdali , made by his mentor Sanjay Khan. In total , he worked in more than 200 films. At the time of his death , he was writing his autobiography ; ” Flashback : My Times In Bollywood And Beyond ” .

6 – Haryanvi : My student Poonam Jhaver is appearing in a Haryanvi film ” Muthbed ” . This multi-crore film is the first Haryanvi film in almost two decades.
