Year End Musings : Vidur Acting Institute in 2016

End of a year is the time to make plan for the coming year. But it is also the time to take into account the year gone by. People often forget this and they remain unaware of their downward slide if there are any. And thus they fail to make amends.

This is precisely the reason, I started chronicling my accomplishments and write about the year gone by. Here I am chronicling some shinning achievements of the past and also what happened to me on the career front in 2016.

2 – AD = My 40 students worked as Brand Ambassadors of various products in 2016.

3 – THEATRE = My 16 students appeared in various plays in 2016.

4 – REGIONAL FILMS = My 6 students did lead roles in regional  films in 2016.

Thus in total 91 students worked in TV, AD, THEATRE & REGIONAL FILMS. If you add 125 students of films , this number comes to a whopping  216. 01 more than 2015 .

100 CRORE CLUB : 2016

Till date 50 Hindi films have earned 100 crore or more at the box office. Out of these 50 films, my 47 students are there in 44 films. Only ” Ghajini “, ” Holiday ” , ” Ek Villain ” , ” M. S. Dhoni : The Untold Story ” , ” Shivaay ” & ” Dangal “ are the films, which have no students of mine. In this field my success rate is unbelievably whopping 94 % .

Vidur Acting Institute & 10 National Film Awards

With this post, I want to tell the world that VIDUR Acting Institute  has a wonderful presence in the arena of NATIONAL FILM AWARDS.

This year in 2016 my student Kalki Koechlin won Jury Best Actor Award for her film ” MARGARITA WITH A STRAW “. When I read the news and started counting , I was surprised to note that till date my 10 students have won NATIONAL FILM AWARDS in different categories.

Out of these 10 recipients, 04 are actors, 03 are directors, 02 are producers and 01 is screenplay writer. Prakash Jha won the awards thrice. 02 as director [ SONAL & GANGAAJAL ] and 01 as screenplay writer [ APAHARAN ].

As I have decide to be truthful in all my reporting, I would like to confess that out of 10 NATIONAL FILM AWARD winning personalities, I have to share credit of 05 with Mr. Kishore Namit Kapoor as I trained them there as their personal acting coach. They are : Saif Ali Khan , Priyanka Chopra , Arjun Rampal , Arbaaz Khan & John Abraham . 

But the remaining 05 are my own students. They are : Prakash Jha [ 03 Time Winner ] Jugal Hansraj & Kalki Koechlin .

Kalki is a wonderful actor and her portrayals are always very poignant and sensitive. After her debut film ” Dev D ” , she was memorable in ” Margarita With A Straw “.

As an ACTING TRAINER my success rate was 40% in the year 2013 – 2014 . It jumped to 55% in 2014 – 2015. And in 2015 , it zoomed up to 62.35 % . This is unprecedented for any ACTING INSTITUTE or ACTING TRAINER across the world. I am continuously writing Vidur’s Film Diary since 6 years. And to my utter surprise I have noticed that there were no lean months ever. It never happened that a month came and there were none of my students in any of the 5 fields of entertainment, which my diary covers. In fact there were more than a dozen working students every month.

Ashok Gaikwad :

Ashok Gaikwad was a Hindi film director who has directed several hit films. His first notable film was Qatil (1988) starring Aditya Pancholi and Sangeeta Bijlani. He was prominent in the 1990s with many Mithun Chakraborty and Jackie Shroff starrers.

Some of his notable films are : Qatil [ 1988 ] , Doodh Ka Karz [ 1990 ] , Izzat [ 1991 ] , Police Officer [ 1992 ] , Sarphira [ 1992 ] , Phool Aur Angaar [ 1993 ] , Krishan Avtaar [ 1993 ] , Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat [ 1997 ] , Gair [ 1999 ] & Maa Kasam [ 1999 ] .

Some of his lesser known films are : “Gunehgar Kaun” [ 1991 ] , “Qurbani Rang Layegi” [ 1991 ] , “Hasti” [ 1993 ] , “Parwane” [ 1993 ] , & “Fauj” [ 1994 ] .

He was the man who directed Rani Mukherjee in her debut film ” Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat ” [ 1997 ].

Year End Musings : Vidur Acting Institute in 2015

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JANUARY 03, 2016           11.00 P.M.

I wrote Year End Musing in 2010 , 2011 & 2012. In those days I used to write about the Hindi films and Hindi film industry in general. Then I thought that there are many websites and many film analysts and trade pundits doing the same job. So what is the need of me writing the same stuff. Therefore I didn’t write Year End Musings in 2013 & 2014.

But this year it occurred to me that I should chronicle yearly success stories and accomplishments of Vidur Acting Institute. In this field, where veterans like Shri Roshan Taneja and Sushri Ashha Chandra are almost retired, there are only few genuine ones left doing their jobs ethically.

This arena is now dominated by few upstarts, who can go to any length to get their prey. They can make false claims, they can Photoshop some pictures and present it as the proof of their recent successes and accomplishments. They have various fee structures of the same course to lure and hoodwink gullible out-of-town students and finally they give free demo class, collect students, click pictures and post it as the new batch of their tottering institute. But it is their moral and ethical values. If they are not bothered, why should I?

I don’t have to compete with them. 4 generations of NEW AGE Hindi film actors are my students. They are :

2 – AD = My 49 students worked as Brand Ambassadors of various products in 2015.

100 CRORE CLUB : 2015

Till date 35 Hindi films have earned 100 crore or more at the box office. 1 film is in 3oo crore club, 1 in 250 crore, 3 in 200 crore, 7 in 150 crore and 23 are in 100 crore club. Out of these 35 films, my 81 students are there in 32 films. Only ” Ghajini “, ” Holiday ” & ” Ek Villain ” are the films, which have no students of mine. In this field my success rate is 92 % .

A Tale of Two Acting Institutes : FTII & NSD

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           OCTOBER 28 , 2012           01.15 A.M.

I start my blog with salutations to Shri Roshan Taneja , Ex Head of FTII [ Film & Television Institute of India ] and Ebrahim Alkazi , Ex Head of NSD [ National School of Drama ] .

With Shri Roshan Taneja in His Office

Then I proceed to submit that apart from above mentioned two giants of Acting Training , I don’t like the present dispensation of these so-called premiere acting institutes of India .

Let me take their case one by one .

NATIONAL SCHOOL OF DRAMA :

This so-called premiere school boasts of the alumni , which could be the dream of any Acting Trainer of India . This famous theatre training institute was established in 1959 in New Delhi by the Sangeet Natak Akademi . In 1975 it became an independent school .

First batch of NSD was passed out in 1961 . After this Ebrahim Alkazi took over the reigns and helmed the affair of the school from 1962 to 1977 . It was the golden period of NSD .

In 2008 , though the NSD celebrated its Golden Jubilee , but the shine  , the sheen had gone . I fail to understand the attitude of the present day students of NSD . They think that since they have done an acting course from NSD , so the whole world should invariably acknowledge their eminence . They behave as if whole universe is indebted to them because they have done two years training in NSD . Their immortal arrogance precede their mortal body . This is precisely the reason that they are not very successful in Hindi Film Industry .

This premier film acting institute was established in 1960 by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting , Government of India . The present campus is situated in the holy precincts of erstwhile Prabhat Film Company , Pune .

I do agree that this an enviable list . Any Acting Trainer of India can die for such illustrious students . But what is the present condition ? Why this institute is unable to churn such illustrious students any more ? What happened after Shri Roshan Taneja’s departure ?

Can any one answer ? NSD and FTII were successful with enviable record during the tenure of Shri Ebrahim Alkazi and Shri Roshan Taneja respectively . After their departure mediocrity started ruling and these glorious institutions became just buildings , just structures .

Great institutions are governed by great minds , giant personalities . They can’t be run by upstarts and dwarfs . I can’t comment much about NSD but I know the root cause of the deterioration and subsequent demise of FTII . After departure of Shri Roshan Taneja , every Tom , Dick & Harry rushed to FTII and became Acting Trainers . In front of 10 / 20 captive students they proclaimed themselves as the incarnation of Constantin Stanislavski . People managing the affairs of FTII had and have no vision . They employed every wannabe , every upstart , every so-called veteran actors as Acting Coach and these frustrated Dilip Kumars and Amitabh Bachchans ruined the great FTII .

The decadence is apparent , degeneration is palpable and death is imminent . I have one student in the current batch of Vidur’s Kreating Charakters , who has completed two years acting course from FTII . She is beautiful and is definitely talented . But because of wrong training , she is struggling in my class . She is not at fault . Fault lies at the door of their trainers , who proclaim themselves as the reincarnation of Constantin Stanislavski and dish out half – baked knowledge . It never happened during the tenure of Shri Roshan Taneja .

Is there any remedy ? Will these two institutes be able to come out of ICU ? Can there be another Ebrahim Alkazi and Roshan Taneja ?

On behalf of myself and on behalf of all the students of Vidur’s Kreating Charakters and whole family of Vidur’s Kreating Charakters , I pray to the almighty for the long life of NSD and FTII ! May the future be more glorious and shining than the illustrious past !

Under – 30 Over – Achiever Stars of Hindi Films

In the Hindustan Times of August 25 , 2012 , there was an article in HT Cafe section . It is about 8 stars of Hindi cinema , who are currently ruling the box office and yet are below 30 years of age . Their names are ; Ranbir Kapoor , Katrina Kaif , Priyanka Chopra , Imran Khan , Sonam Kapoor , Deepika padukone , Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Sharma .

It is very heartening to note that out of these 8 stars , 5 are my students and were trained by me during different phases of my career .

RANBIR KAPOOR : ” Saawariya ” to ” Rockstar “

I trained him before his debut film ” Saawariya ” [ 2007 ] . I used to go to his Pali Hill bungalow and work with him . I am happy to see his rise to the dizzying heights of super – stardom . I also attended the premier of his first film ” Saawariya “ at the Imax theatre , Wadala in Mumbai .

After 7 years of gap , I again met him at Manali in March 2012 . He had gone there for ” Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani “ , a film being produced by Karan Johar and Dharma Productions . I was also there to train Kalki Koechlin for the same film . Much has been changed since his ” Saawariya “ days . From a confident newcomer , he has now become a super – confident super – star . I was ushered into his room in Manu Allaya , a 5 star hotel in Manali by Kalki Koechlin . I was sceptical . Whether he would recognize me or not ? When Kalki told him about a visitor , he came forward , recognized me immediately and warmly hugged me .

As per trade grapevine he charges INR 8 – 10 crore per film . For ads he charges 1 – 2 crore per ad per day .

His major endorsements are ; Panasonic , Pepsi , Tata Docomo , Nissan , Ronco Leone Shoes , Hero Moto Corp and Lenovo .

KATRINA KAIF : ” Boom ” to ” Ek Tha Tiger ”

She is again a rising super star among female artistes . Coming from a non – filmy background and without much knowledge of  Hindi language , she climbed the stairs of stardom and is now the most successful female star of Hindi film industry .

I was called by Yash Raj Films to train her for ” New York ” [ 2009 ] . I worked with her briefly for that film . Later on she again called me for Prakash Jha’s film  ” Raajneeti ” [ 2010 ]  . I worked on her accent . Results are there for everyone to see . She is tremendously hard-working girl .

As per trade analysts , she charges INR 3 – 4 crore per film . For ads she gets 1 – 1.5 per ad per day .

Her major endorsements are ; Barbie , Choc – On , Linc Uniball , Lux , Nakshatra , Olay , Panasonic , Pantene , Slice , Titan , Wrigleys , Yardley and Veet .

PRIYANKA CHOPRA : ” The Hero ” to ” Agneepath ”

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are my personal students . I used to go to their houses . But Priyanka Chopra was my student in Mr. Kishore Namit Kapoor’s classes ,  with whom I was working those days .

She joined the class after being crowned Miss World in 2000 . She made her acting debut with Tamil film ” Thamizhan ” [ 2002 ] . Her first Hind film was ” The Hero ” [ 2003 ] . She gained superstardom with ” Andaaz ” [ 2003 ] .

Till date she has got 1 National Award and 4 Filmfare Awards .

As per trade pundits , she charges INR 2 – 3 crores per film . For ads she charges INR 65 – 75 lakh per ad per day .

Her major endorsements are ; Nokia , Dabur , Dabur Amla , Garnier , Samsung , Bru , Nikon , Hero Honda and Asmi .

IMRAN KHAN : ” Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na ” to ” Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu ”

He , also , is not my personal student . He became my student when he joined Kishore Namit Kapoor’s classes .

He made his debut with ” Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na ” [ 2008 ] . His last release was ” Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu ” [ 2012 ] . Though he is only 8 films old , he , among the stars of his age , is considered bankable . Incidentally his heroine Genelia D’Souza in his debut film is also my student .

As per industry grapevine he charges INR 5 – 7 crores per film . For ads he demands INR INR 1 – 1.5 crore per ad per day .

His major endorsements are Levis and Coke .

SONAM KAPOOR : ” Saawariya ” to ” Mausam ”

One day I got a call from Mr. Anil Kapoor . He wanted me to come to his house . I immediately rushed and to my surprise I found that he wanted me to train his daughter , who was making her debut in ” Saawariya ” [ 2007 ] with Ranbir Kapoor . I trained her for the film . She is , contrary to her image , very warm – hearted girl . She is style icon and a philanthropist .

She is only 7 films old , but is considered as one of the rising stars among the girls of her age .

According to trade pundits , she gets INR 50 – 75 lakh per film . For ads she demands INR 25 – 50 lakh per ad per day .

Her major endorsements are ; L’Oreal , Spice Mobile , Mont Blanc , Electrolux , Indian Gems and Jewellery Exibition .

[ So out of these 5 stars , 3 are my personal students and remaining 2 were my students in Mr. Kapoor’s class . ]

DEEPIKA PADUKONE and SONAKSHI SINHA are not my students . So there is not much to write about them .

Her case is peculiar . She was in the Batch No. 19 of Kreating Charakters . But she constantly refuses to accept this . She says that she is not trained . So let it be . If she does not accept me as her teacher , so I cannot force myself to be her teacher . May God bless her in her journey !

1 – Amitabh Bachchan got National Award for ” Paa ” as Best Actor . His 4th after ” Saat Hindustani “, ” Agnipath ” and ” Black ” .

2 – The Film Federation of India selected Aamir Khan‘s ” Peepli [ Live ] “ as India’s official entry for the oscars in the Best Foreign Film category.

3 – ” Peepli [ Live ] ” is the fourth Aamir Khan film that is going to the Oscars after ” Lagaan ” , ” Rang De Basanti ” and ” Taare Zameen Par ” .

4 – ” Peepli [Live ] “ got Best Feature Film Award at the Durban Film Festival.

5 – ” Peepli [ Live ] ” had won Anusha Rizvi the Best Debutante Director Award at the Sundance Festival .

6 – The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences have approached Prakash Jha for acquiring the sceenplay of ” Raajneeti ” .

7 – Mani Ratnam was awarded the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmaker Award at the 67th Venice Film Festival for ” Raavanan ” , the Tamil version of ” Raavan ” .

8 – The government has lifted the ban on Satyajit Ray’s 1971 documentary film on Sikkim, after almost 35 years after its imposition.

9 – ONV Kurup [ Lyricist of Malayalam films like ” Madhanolsavam ” and his latest ” Pazhasi Raja ” ] and Shahryar [ Lyricist of ” Umrao Jaan ” & ” Gaman ” ] got Jnanpith Award for the year 2007 and 2008 respectively.

10 – Udan wins Best Film Award at the Houston Film Festival.

National Awards & Me

57th National Film Awards were announced on September 16th . None of my students won National Awards this year. But there are 3 films, which got awards and in these films my 5 students were there as actors. I am proud to be part of following 3 National Award winning films. These films are :

Vidur’s Film Diary – June 2010

After two successive and consecutive hits in the form of ” HOUSEFULL” and ” BADMAASH COMPANY “ , last month’s ” KiITES ” was a major disappointment. Month of June started with the spactacular opening of Prakash Jha’s ” RAAJNEETI” . But ” RAAVAN “ again dampened the spirit. Viveka Babajee :

I was thinking that this month, as it is coming to an end, there wont be any tragedy. I was hoping for the best but got shock of my life when I read a tweet of Priyanka Chopra on the morning of June 26. She condoled the suicide of Viveka Babajee. I was shocked to read that. I was introduced to Viveka Babajee, when she was signed for a film ” Yeh Kaisi Mohabbat ” in 2002. It was being produced by the father of a student of mine.Govinda’s nephew Krushna Abhishek, another student of mine, was playing the main lead.
She was born in Mauritius and was crowned Miss Mauritius in 1993. In 1994 she represented her country in the Miss Universe pageant. She lost and incidentally Sushmita Sen won the coveted crown. She came to India and shot to fame when she featured in the Kama Sutra advertisements. For the next 10 years she remained one of the top models of the country.
I used to meet her during the shooting of ” Yeh Kaisi Mohabbat “. Then bumped into her at the release function of the film. After that I lost touch. It is alleged that her failed relationship with Gautam Vora is the cause for her suicide. Whatever is the reason,It is sad to hear about her demise and that too at a young age of 37.

Saurabh Usha Narang :

He shall ever be remembered as the director of  ” Vaastu Shastra “, a film produced by Ram Gopal Verma. He directed this Sushmita Sen starrer in 2004. He was trying to make a film  ” Return Gift ” with rajeev Khandelwal. He was suffering from stomach cancer and had gone to Sri Lanka for treatment. He died at Colombo. At the time of his death, he was just 37 years old. Another young life ended so soon.

It is strange coincidence that both the persons died at the age of 37. A bizarre coincidence.

1 – Amitabh Bachchan is back on television. He is to host ” KAUN BANEGA CROREPATI – Season 4 ” on Sony TV.

2 – Javed Akhtar is to play SUTRADHAR ( narrator ) for the Star Plus show ” CHAND CHHUPA BADAL MEIN “. Years ago ASHOK KUMAR played SUTRADHAR in ” HUM LOG ” on DD and started the trend.

3 – Kiran Rao’s directorial venture ” DHOBI GHAT ” , an Aamir Khan production , has signed  a composer who got Oscar for his score in ” BROKEBACK MOUNTAINS “.

4 – Resul Pookutty becomes member of the Academy of Motion Pictures.He is the first Asian sound technician to become member of the Academy.

5 – Amitabh Bachchan shot for his first malayalam film with Mohan Lal.

Celebrating ” RAAJNEETI ” With No Regrets

As the cast & crew of ” Raajneeti ” celebrated their success by throwing a lavish bash, I went to watch the movie that evening in a theatre. When a trainer starts training        artistes for a particular film, that film takes a special place in his the heart. And as I was training Katrina Kaif specially for this film, I was attached to this film  even before its theatrical release. I was eager to watch it in theatre. Though I read all the reviews , which were very positive, I got all the bytes from the discerning viewers, which were very good about Ranbir Kapoor and katrina Kaif, but still I wanted to watch it myself. As I watched this film in Cinemax , Versova I was pleasantly surprised to watch Ranbir Kapoor in a very different role of his career. According to me  ” ROCKET SINGH : SALESMAN OF THE YEAR ” is his best film till date, followed by ” WAKE UP SID “,  ” AJAB PREM KI GAZAB KAHANI ” , ” SAAWARIYA ” and ” BACHANA AE HASEENO “ and that too strictly in that order. But I must say that ” RAAJNEETI “ is his most mature , different  and difficult film till date. I am happy to watch him grow as an artiste and portraying various roles with  finesse and panache of a mature actor. But frankly speaking he is an accomplished actor and everyone recognizes and accepts that. So there was never any doubt about his acting abilities.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

My main concern was Katrina. As everyone knows, she is yet to get fluency and mastery in Hindi and in this film she had quite lengthy speeches and that too in chaste Hindi. I was sceptical because I got very less time to train Katrina. But one fact,  which is not known to her detractors, is that she is extremely confident actor and knows her job well. As drama unfolded on the screen and Katrina appeared for the first time my heart started beating faster. my palpitation grew, and I watched her with lots of anxiety.  Frankly speaking, all my anxieties vanished soon. I was happy to watch Katrina Kaif’s performance. I must admit that she worked hard and perfected her Hindi speeches.It should be admitted that she had done a commendable job.  Some critics are still critical and some cynics are still sceptical, but Katrina has done a brilliant job as for as her diction is concerned. No doubt, still she has miles to go as for as her acting skills are concerned. I am sure she will accomplish that also because she is very hard-working and dedicated artiste.

Arjun Rampal is also my student. And he is very good in the film. But I have no contacts with him. He is not my private student. He was in the class. So it was just a formal relationship. Warmth and intimacy in relationship was never there. I only met him once after he left classes and that was eons ago.

As the film ended and credits started rolling, I started coming out of the theatre wading through the crowds.  Suddenly a thought occurred  to me. I was also associated with this film in a way. Three students of mine ; Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina kaif and Arjun Rampal are doing prominent roles in the film and they are hugely appreciated for their histrionics. But in the crowd no one knows this fact. No one recognizes me. Should I be sad ? Am I complaining ? No way . This is the beauty of the job. Bhagwan Krishna is known to the universe but his guru Sandipani Muni lived an unknown and spartan life. While Krishna bestrode this terra-firma like a colossus, his guru was silently doing his duty in the hinterlands of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. All the kudos , all the claps and all the praise belong to my students only. I wont ever be there to share their due credits. My job is to train them to the best of my ability and then, as they start taking gigantic steps in the world of cinema, watch them in the dark confines of a theatre with misty eyes. Glitter and glamour belong to them and them only.

After watching ” RAAJNEETI ” , I came out of the theatre fully satisfied and treated myself with a spartan dinner.
