Vidur’s Film Diary – January 2016

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA February 07 , 2016 08.20 P.M.

[ MILESTONE : Vidur’s Film Diary completed 6th year of its existence in May 2015. June 2015 marked the beginning of its journey in the 7th year. ]

As an ACTING TRAINER my success rate was 40% in the year 2013 – 2014 . It jumped to 55% in 2014 – 2015. And in 2015 it is now 62.35 % . This is unprecedented for any ACTING INSTITUTE or ACTING TRAINER. I am continuously writing Vidur’s Film Diary since 6 years. And to my utter surprise I have noticed that there were no lean months ever. It never happened that a month came and there were none of my students in any of the 5 fields of entertainment, which my diary covers. In fact there were more than a dozen working students every month.

Rajesh Vivek :

Rajesh Vivek Upadhyay, a.k.a. Rajesh Vivek will always be known as “GURAN”, one of the most popular characters of “Lagaan” [ 2001 ]. He later played various other famous characters like the postmaster in “Swades” [ 2004 ] .

He was first noticed and gained popularity as Ved Vyas in “Mahabharata” [ 1988 ]. His first film was Shyam Benegal’s “Junoon” [ 1978 ]. He also played Dr. Rajendra Prasad in Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” [ 1982 ].

He died on January 13, 2016 at the age of 66 at Hyderabad, Telangana due to massive heart attack.

Anil Ganguly :

A very successful film director of 70s & early 80s, Anil Ganguly directed films like Jaya Bhaduri starrer “Kora Kagaz” [ 1974 ] , “Tapasya” [ 1975 ] . Both the films got National Award. His other famous film is Anil Kapoor starrer ” Saaheb” [ 1985 ].

He died after brief illness on January 14, 2016 at the age of 82. His daughter Rupali Ganguly is famous TV actor.

Saeed Jaffrey :

Born on January 08, 1929 at Malerkotla, Punjab, Saeed Jaffrey died on November 15, 2015 at the age of 86 in London.

In a career spanning over 60 years, he worked in more than 150 films. Apart from Hindi and American films, he worked in several British films and TV serials. He was inseparable part of Merchant Ivory Production films such as “The Guru” [ 1969 ] , “Hullabaloo Over Georgie And Bonnie’s Pictures” [ 1978 ] , ” The Courtesans Of Bombay” [ 1983 ] and “The Deceivers” [ 1988 ].

He made debut in Hindi films with Satyajit Ray’s “Shatranj Ke Khilari” [ 1977 ]. He fortified in position in Hindi film industry with films like ” Chashme Buddoor” [ 1981 ], “Ram Teri Ganga Maili” [ 1985 ] and “Henna” [ 1991 ].

He won Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for “Shatranj Ke Khilari”, “Ram Teri Ganga Maili” and “Henna”.

He also penned his autobiography, “Saeed : An Actor’s Journey”.

Saeed Jaffrey spent major part of his early years in Gorakhpur and Allahabad, two cities I am also associated with.

Companies have tradition of publishing Annual Progress Reports for their share – holders . Acting Institutes have no such tradition . Not even one acting institute of the world has done it ever .

Acting Institutes have only brochures . But brochures are published in bulk and very often they carry old information . Therefore I decided to establish VIDUR Club and publish Newsletter [ Internet Version ] / Booklet of Achievements [ Print Version ] of the previous year for the perusal of our past , present and would be students , friends & well-wishers , who reside in the 158 countries of the world .

When some upstart acting trainers revel in deception , it is prudent to become upright in dealings . When some upstart acting trainers revel in dishing out false data , it is advisable to come out with true facts & figures . When some upstart acting trainers revel in preposterous claims to lure and hoodwink gullible students , it is ethical and natural to remain transparent .

After achieving 25 % success ratio , I am happy as an acting trainer [ some with questionable knowledge of English call me tutor , as if it is derogatory ] .

My 23 – year – long journey as an acting trainer seems to be fruitful and satisfactory . I am proud of my students . I am proud that they are working in their chosen field . They don’t have to become a broker to help me in my voyage . I don’t encourage my students to roam around in the lanes and pimp around in search of new clients to further my business .

And thank God ! I don’t have the ignominy of becoming a door-mat of my student , so that I can also revel in revelries of the film industry .

Month of March 2013 will be remembered for the average run of films . In the beginning of the month only ” Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns ” got favourable response from the critics and the public . ” Mere Dad Ki Maruti ” and ” Jolly LLB “ had slow starts but picked up miraculously with positive word of mouth . ” Himmatwala “ came towards the end of the month and bombed miserably .

The first quarter of 2013 can boast of only 7 hits and average hit films . They are : ” Jolly LLB ” , ” Special 26 ” , ” ABCD ( Any Body Can Dance ) ” , ” Kai Po Che ” , ” Mere Dad Ki Maruti ” , ” Table No. 21 ” and ” Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns ” .

A veteran actor of mythological films and some social films , Shri B. M. Vyas died on March 11 , 2013 at the age of 93 .

Famous for his portrayal of Ravan in several mythological films , Vyas started his career with Chetan Anand’s ” Neecha Nagar “ but was noticed with Raj Kapoor’s ” Barsaat ” in 1949 . He acted in over 300 mythological and social films including films like ” Baiju Bawra ” , ” Do Aankhen Barah Haath “ and ” Sarawasti Chandra ” . It was such a satisfying month for me as an acting trainer or acting tutor [ as my detractors call me ] . My 12 students appeared in 07 films , 09 students in 07 TV serials , 02 students in 04 regional films and 03 students appeared in 03 plays also . Thus total number of students working in the month of March comes to 25 . Self-proclaimed most famous acting school of Mumbai , self-annointed most famous acting institute of India and self-appointed most famous acting academy of bollywood will fail miserably on this count .

I congratulate all my above mentioned students on behalf of all the current students and staff of my acting institute Vidur’s Kreating Charakters . May they shine in their chosen field . May , through their endeavour , our acting institute will one day become one of the most famous acting institutes of the world .

Month of February , 2013 will only be remembered for the unexpected success of films like ; ” Special 26 ” and ” Kai Po Che ! ” . ” Vishwaroop “ also generated sparks and some controversy but it died down soon . Not so impressive performance of ” Murder 3 “ was a shocker .

Ameen Sayani Turns 80 Today

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA DECEMBER 21 , 2012 04.35 P.M.

Ameen Sayani , the name may not be very familiar for the present day generation of Radio listeners , but for the people of my generation he was the biggest ever star of ” Aawaz Ki Duniya ” .

It is so heartening that he turns 80 today .

His ” Binaca Geet mala ” , later on re-christened as ” Cibaca Geet Mala ” , was integral part of our growing years . Wednesdays were not the same for us after this famous radio programme got closed . This iconic show was first aired in 1952 and continued till 1988 on Radio Ceylon . Then it started coming on Vividh Bharti from 1989 and continued till 1994 . This was the first Radio Countdown show of film songs in India and had 42 years of run on airwaves . Ameen Sahab is synonymous with this show .

Apart from ” Binaca Geet Mala ” , he used to produce various other programmes for radio . ” S. Kumar Ka Filmy Muqaddama “ was another trend setter .

Ameen Sayani started his announcing career from Radio Ceylone , which later on came to be known Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation . Contrary to all the RJs of today , he has his own distinct style . He always started his announcements with ” …………… Behno aur bhaiyon …………………………. ” and ” ………………Awaaz ki duniya ke mere dosto ………………………. ” . People of my generation are so familiar with his inimitable style and distinct voice that no one can miss it .

In films like ” Bhoot Bangla ” [ 1965 ] and ” Teen Devian ” [ 1965 ] he appeared on-screen also as himself .

His body of work can still be enjoyed through this compilation .

He , apart from several other awards , was also awarded Padma Shri in 2009 . We are fortunate that this iconic figure is completing 8o years and still among us .

Years ago I first met him through Mr. Kishore Namit Kapoor . After that I met him three times till date . First it was marriage ceremony of Vikas Kalantri‘s sister . Then I was invited to Neil Nitin Mukesh‘s sister marriage reception and Ameen Sahab was also there. I met him last at the music release function of film ” Sadiyaan ” [ 2010 ] , Luv Sinha’s debut film .

I , on behalf of all the current students and staff of my acting school Vidur’s Kreating Charakters , wish Ameen Sahab many more successful years ahead .
