Year End Musings : Vidur Acting Institute in 2015

I wrote Year End Musing in 2010 , 2011 & 2012. In those days I used to write about the Hindi films and Hindi film industry in general. Then I thought that there are many websites and many film analysts and trade pundits doing the same job. So what is the need of me writing the same stuff. Therefore I didn’t write Year End Musings in 2013 & 2014.

But this year it occurred to me that I should chronicle yearly success stories and accomplishments of Vidur Acting Institute. In this field, where veterans like Shri Roshan Taneja and Sushri Ashha Chandra are almost retired, there are only few genuine ones left doing their jobs ethically.

This arena is now dominated by few upstarts, who can go to any length to get their prey. They can make false claims, they can Photoshop some pictures and present it as the proof of their recent successes and accomplishments. They have various fee structures of the same course to lure and hoodwink gullible out-of-town students and finally they give free demo class, collect students, click pictures and post it as the new batch of their tottering institute. But it is their moral and ethical values. If they are not bothered, why should I?

I don’t have to compete with them. 4 generations of NEW AGE Hindi film actors are my students. They are :

Apart from them, I have trained modern-day Telugu super stars like ; ANUSHKA SHETTY , ALLU ARJUN , NAG CHAITANYA & RAM CHARAN. Current Bengali super star DEV is also my student. Why should I lower my standard to the level of some foul-mouth skunks, if I have such an enviable list. I have decided to paint a true picture of my yearly accomplishments with facts and figures. So this year onwards I will keep on posting Year End Musings.

100 CRORE CLUB : 2015

Till date 35 Hindi films have earned 100 crore or more at the box office. 1 film is in 3oo crore club, 1 in 250 crore, 3 in 200 crore, 7 in 150 crore and 23 are in 100 crore club. Out of these 35 films, my 81 students are there in 32 films. Only ” Ghajini “, ” Holiday ” & ” Ek Villain ” are the films, which have no students of mine. In this field my success rate is 92 % .

Vidur’s Film Diary – June 2015

[ MILESTONE : Vidur’s Film Diary completed 6th year of its existence in May 2015. It began its journey in the 7th year in June 2015. ]

[ DECLARATION : In my film diary, since May 2014, I have started mentioning names of only those students, who respect me as their teacher and accept and regard my contribution in their journey of life . All the other students, who had releases this month but are not mentioned here, are the ones, who refuse to acknowledge me in any way . I can sense their abhorrence to my personality . I am not a sweet-talker. So I know that somewhere they were rubbed the wrong way . I also feel their attachment to some acting trainers , who claim to be the re-incarnation of Constantine Stanislavsky and are sweeter than any sweet delicacy on this earth . Such students are free from any obligation from my side. GOD BLESS THEM ! ]

Sanjeet Bedi , who played the role of Dr. Omi Joshi in TV serial Sanjivani , died on June 23, 2015 , due to brain ailment.

Apart from Sanjivani [ 2001 – 2005 ] , he also starred in shows like Kasautii Zindagii Kay [ 2005 – 2006 ] , Kyaa Hoga Nimmo Kaa [ 2006 – 2007 ] and Jaane Kya Baat Hui [ 2008 – 2009 ]

He was in his late 30s when he died.

Tina Ahuja – My 11th Student To Make Debut In 20 Months

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA JULY 05, 2015 11.55 P.M.

It is first Sunday of July 2015. Sunday brings few welcome changes in my daily 18-hour-long-work-schedule. It is the day of late wake up call. It is the day of reading many newspapers and getting soaked in the vortex called Indian politics. And yes, it is the day of the posting of my blog.

Tina Ahuja, better known as Narmmadaa, made her debut this Friday with a film called ” Second Hand Husband “. She is film actor Govinda’s daughter and a student of mine.

I am not an accomplished chartered accountant but as soon as films of my students get released, I start calculating like a diligent, hard-working local bania. And when I calculated this time, I found to my astonishment that she is the 11th student of mine, who made debut in the last 20 months. [ NOVEMBER 2013 – JULY 2015 ]

I know that it will cause severe heartburn to few startups, who think themselves as thespians and claim to be accomplished acting trainers. Mumbai has many acting institutes and acting trainers. Few like ROSHAN TANEJA, ASHHA CHANDRA, BARRY JOHN and ANUPAM KHER are very reputed. They don’t have any problem with me and my success. They have their own successes to celebrate.

There is another one, who was reputed once upon a time. But has resorted to gimmicks and cheap tactics to keep himself relevant. Slashing your fee and advertising it publicly shows the desperation. Once upon a time he used to demand and command huge sum as fee but recently slashed it by half. It is now almost equivalent of my fee. Is it not desperation? Would you like to know the reason? He has failed to produce a single star after 2010.

And yes, there are few others. [ I don’t want to make them immortal by mentioning their names. ] Tucked in the lanes and by-lanes of Mhada, they proclaim to be acting trainers of repute but are nowhere in the scene. They will be troubled a lot by my list of ” 11 debuts in 20 months “. They claim to impart hard-core training. May I demand to know, what is the quality of this hard-core training, which can’t produce even a single star worth the name in these years? I think I should leave it up to the general public to decide.

3 years back I wrote in one of my blog post that hazy picture will not remain forever. Deceit will die its own death. Things will be clear one day when dust will settle down. An egoist startup, who thinks very high of himself, made fun of me and my statement. Within 3 years I am making public my latest list of accomplishments. I notice deafening silence from the other side of the fence. The thespian ( ? ) , who was roaring 3 years back, is conspicuous by his stoic ( ? ) silence. I guess he is maimed and mutilated considerably. I pity his toothless existence.

Their success validates that even after 26 years of my life as an acting trainer, I have not reached saturation point. I thank God for that.

My life is entering into a new important phase. In 2015-2016, it is going to be downpour of new stars trained by me. Many of them have potential to change the face of Indian cinema. So farewell till then.

After a dull May 2014 and June 2014, July 2014 brought happy news on my career front and it became a month of celebration. A new, significant and important film ” Lekar Hum Deewana Dil “ was released on July 04. Armaan Jain, grandson of legendary Raj Kapoor, made his debut in the said film. He is my student.

The grand old lady of Indian film and theatre world died in New Delhi on July 10, 2014 at the age of 102. From Prithvi Raj Kapoor to Ranbir Kapoor, she worked with 4 generation of Kapoors. An incredible feat indeed.

Thus total number of students working in the month of July comes to 27 . Vidur’s Open Letter – 8 : To Armaan Jain

Hi Armaan,

It is nice to get in touch with you at the time when you have made your debut and your first film has been released. As I am writing this blog, I am remembering all the Sundays which I spent at your South Mumbai residence when I used to come for the classes. It was years ago but it seems as if it happened just yesterday. I particularly remember your illustrious parents; reticent Manoj Ji and larger than life and exuberant Rima Ji. Rima Ji was always nice and kind to me. Whenever I talked to her, I felt, as if I am talking to legendary and immortal Raj Kapoor.

I do remember my first day with you. It was a hesitant but confident start. I am unable to forget your child-like innocence even after so many years. Your “Rishi Kapoor of Bobby” kind of look is still fresh in my memory.

After many months, classes got a break when you started assisting Karan Johar in his film “Student Of The Year”.

I started with you once again before commencement of shooting of your debut film “Lekar Hum Deewana Dil”. It was a sweet surprise to watch a more confident and mature avatar of yours.

Because of this long association, I was very excited and was eagerly waiting for your debut film “Lekar Hum Deewana Dil”. And finally it got released on July 04, 2014.

I am yet to see the film. But I am getting the news that it is not doing well at the box office. As per trade circles it is not going to make its producers happy. Though it is not a good or encouraging news for a newcomer, such things do happen. And in this industry it even happened to some of our greats, rather the greatest.

Armaan, I must make you aware that the first film of RK Films “Aag”, made by your illustrious maternal grandfather Late Raj Kapoor, was also a disastrous flop. “Jwaar Bhata”, the first film of legendary Dilip Kumar , was a dud at the box office. Your cousin Kareena Kapoor’s first film “Refugee” got lukewarm response. Your other cousin Ranbir Kapoor‘s debut film “Saawariya” was also a resounding flop. So you seem to be in an august company.

Armaan, a film’s box office run is not the only criteria of success. Though the first milestone of a long journey is important but ultimately what matters is the completion of the journey. And your remarkable journey did not start in 2014. It started in 1929 with the release of “Cinema Girl” and got prominence in 1931 with the first Indian talkie “Alam Ara”. Shri Prithvi Raj Kapoor starred in both the films. It happened 85 years ago. You are the latest torch-bearer of an illustrious legacy, a shinning 85-year-old saga. Just one smeared milestone is not going to tarnish the unparalleled and never seen before cinematic journey. The 85-year-old saga has found a new mascot in you and you have to be ready for that responsibility.

I have made a video celebrating the saga of 85 years of Kapoors. For me this saga is not going to be diminished by just one film. Do watch the video and let me know your reaction :

Armaan, I am happy that I wrote my first open letter to your cousin Ranbir Kapoor on November 29, 2009. Exactly after 5 years I am writing my latest open letter to you.

I congratulate you on the occasion of the release of your first film. Vidur’s Film Diary – June 2014

लो आज हम ने तोड़ दिया रिश्ता -ए -उमीद ;

लो अब कभी गिला न करेंगे किसी से हम ॥

After a dull May 2014, June 2014 also ended as a lacklustre month. From 30 / 40 students, who used to work in the Indian film industry in a month, it has now come down to 12 / 15 students in a month. It is almost half. But it does not mean that I am slipping down on the sandy, slippery path of the tinsel town. The main reason for this whittled list is that I have now decided and stopped taking credit of the 7 years of shared, sham and shameful legacy [ August 2005 to August 2012 ] .

It is derogatory and worthless to fight for credit. It is beyond my dignity to mention names of those students, who despite being my students, don’t acknowledge my contribution in their professional lives. It is a 7-year long deafening silence from their side. So I also refrain from mentioning their names. From my side, I make them free from any obligation. From now on I don’t have any responsibility towards them and they also don’t owe me anything. Good luck to them! May they be blessed in their lives!

July is going to bring a happy news and it is going to be a month of celebration. A new film ” Lekar Hum Deewana Dil “ is going to be released on July 04, 2014. Armaan Jain, grandson of legendary Raj Kapoor, and cousin of Kareena Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, is making his debut in the said film. He is my student. And he is not uncouth, uncultured and ungrateful like few others.

Thus total number of students working in the month of June comes to 12 . It is not what it used to be. But I have mentioned the reason in the beginning of the blog.
