Vidur Acting Institute Spreads Across Two Generations

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 17, 2016           08.00 P.M.

In this ephemeral world of films , it is very difficult to survive for 25 years. Banners are stablished and one day they disappear. Film-makers start their journey and one day they cease to exist. Acting Training is also same. Since it is mostly ruled by unscrupulous, scheming liars, it withers before bloom. Since deceit is the pattern for majority of so-called famous acting trainers of Mumbai or India, it implode before becoming a long-living entity.

In this world of treacherous, unscrupulous and fraudulent scamsters, roaming around as best acting trainers of Mumbai, I always wonder how I survived for 26 long years. From 1990 to 2016, it seems an impossible journey. People become obsolete in 26 years. They become redundant after becoming old. They become cynics with advancing age. Finally, they slip into irrelevance. But this didn’t happen to me. It is God’s mercy. It is because of the fact that even after 26 years my students have faith on me. And this faith has made me AN ACTING TRAINER OF TWO GENERATIONS.

In the 26th year of my career, I have started my 100th batch on April 07, 2016. And this batch have a girl named SHINOVA SONI. Years ago, precisely 19 years ago, I trained her mother APARNA SONI also. Here is the complete story.

APARNA SONI [ the mother, got trained in 1997 ] SHINOVA SONI [ the daughter, getting trained in 2016 ]

APARNA SONI [ the mother, got trained in 1997 ] SHINOVA SONI [ the daughter, getting trained in 2016 ]

1997           SHEETAL APARTMENT – JUHU           BOMBAY

================================================================

IMG_8203

It was a normal, forgettable, hot and humid Summer day in Bombay. The year was 1997. The place was ground floor hall of SHEETAL APARTMENT near CHANDAN CINEMA, JUHU. An acting batch started. It had KAREENA KAPOOR, UDAY CHOPRA & SUDHANSHU PANDEY. Apart from above mentioned names, the batch also had a dusky, kohl-eyed beauty. Her name was APARNA SONI.

That is the beginning of the story. No Acting Trainer can forget students like KAREENA KAPOOR, UDAY CHOPRA & SUDHANSHU PANDEY. But one can easily forget APARNA SONI.

After mandatory 3 months period, the batch ended. Months came and gone. Seasons changed colours. Years passed. Age took me with all its ferocity and the vagaries of time engulfed me completely. I did remember KAREENA KAPOOR, UDAY CHOPRA & SUDHANSHU PANDEY. But APARNA SONI doggedly refused to be obfuscated from my memory. She refused to be just another student, who came for 3 months and simply faded away. And the efforts for maintaining this relationship were always from her side.

One phone call a month ………………. few occasional messages here & there ……………………. season’s greetings ………………… festival wishes, she was always there. She always calls. She is always there if occasion arises. She always recommends students for my acting training institute. Once when I was hospitalised, she used to come daily. Till the time I was in hospital, she came every day without fail.

And thus THE RELATIONSHIP CONTINUED ……………………..

With SHINOVA SONI in My Office

With SHINOVA SONI in My Office

On March 22, 2016, I got a call from her. I thought that it is one of her regular calls. Next day on March 23, 2016, she came to meet me with her daughter. She wanted to admit her daughter in VIDUR Acting Institute .

It was again a normal, forgettable, hot and humid Summer day. Only change is that now the city is not Bombay. And the year is not 1997. City is now rechristened Mumbai and the year is 2016. And yes the student is also not APARNA. The student is SHINOVA, who just like her mother, is also a dusky, kohl-eyed beauty

It never occurred to me that 19 year have passed since APARNA completed her training. In 1997, I never ever expected that after training APARNA SONI, one day I would be training her daughter also. I never imagined this even in my wildest dreams. But 19 year after training mother APARNA SONI, I am training her daughter SHINOVA SONI too.

It is not easy to become AN ACTING TRAINER OF TWO GENERATIONS. It is very rare chance. Apart from Shri Roshan Taneja, no other acting trainer of India can claim that they have trained two generations. Taneja Sir trained SHRI SHATRUGHAN SINHA & his son LUV SINHA.

From Drop to A Pearl : Journey of Narendra Jetley

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           APRIL 10, 2016           10.00 P.M.

With Narendra Jetley in my Office

With Narendra Jetley in my Office

If my memory is not failing me, the year must have been 2010. Narendra Jetley was a students of Batch No. 32. [ Technically he is not a student of VIDUR ACTING INSTITUTE ].

I still remember his first few tentative baby – steps in the class. Confused but eager to correct himself ………… doubtful but always ready to remove doubts …………………. prone to mistakes but always willing to make amends. It was a normal journey of a budding actor. He, at that time, was just an ephemeral, inconsequential drop of water in the seamless, endless ocean of FINE ARTS.

It has been 5 years now. And if I look back and try to analyse, the same ephemeral, inconsequential drop of water has miraculously metamorphosed as an immortal, precious pearl.

And let me make it clear. It is his personal victory. All his accomplishments are fruits of his own tireless efforts. No acting trainer or acting institute can make that kind of transformation in any actor.

Just look at his body of work and variety of roles, which he essayed in his ads.

—————————————————————————————————-

—————————————————————————————————-

In between he has done variety of roles in few films also. It’s just a start. His zenith has yet to come.

Movies / Serials / Telefilms :

   StarringSunny Leone,Tanuj Virwani
2) Ishq Click, (Dir – Anil Ballani)

9) Punaah, Telefilm (Dir – Shashant Shah)
   Starring: Ranvir Shourey
10) Aftermath, (Dir – Rama Rau)
Screened at Cannes Film Festival 2011

—————————————————————————————————-

In these 5 years, Narendra Jetley worked hard and made his mark. He had no connections of any kind in the world of films. But he made his place in the industry with sheer grit, tenacity and will power.

Today when I look back and watch his growth an a thinking actor, I feel so proud.

I see a very bright future for him and wish him all the best.

Vidur Acting Institute Spreads Across India …… Almost !!

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MARCH 27, 2016           08.25 P.M.

Vidur Acting Institute Spreads Across India …….. Almost!! Is it narcissistic? Is it megalomania? Some will yell, yes! But here are the reason and facts.

Few days back, I was posting a greeting for the people of Mizoram on the occasion of Chapchar Kut. I always write, ” To all my students, friends & well-wishers ……. ” I suddenly realised that I have yet to get an acting student from Mizoram. I started counting. Then I realised that apart from Mizoram, I don’t have any student from Arunachal Pradesh either.

Political Map of India

Political Map of India

At this point of time there are 29 states in the Republic of India. They are : ANDHRA PRADESH //  ARUNACHAL PRADESH // ASSAM // BIHAR // CHHATTISGARH // GOA // GUJARAT // HARYANA // HIMACHAL PRADESH // JAMMU & KASHMIR // JHARKHAND // KARNATAKA // KERALA // MADHYA PRADESH // MAHARASHTRA // MANIPUR // MEGHALAYA // MIZORAM // NAGALAND // ODISHA // PUNJAB // RAJASTHAN // SIKKIM // TAMIL NADU // TELANGANA // TRIPURA // UTTAR PRADESH // UTTARAKHAND // WEST BENGAL

Out of 29 states of India, I have got and trained students from 27 states.  Only 2 states; ARUNACHAL PRADESH & MIZORAM are still out of my reach.

ONLY TWO [ 02 ] out of TWENTY NINE [ 29 ] !!

Therefore I titled the blog – “Vidur Acting Institute Spreads Across India …… Almost!!”

—————————————————————————————————-

Location of Arunachal Pradesh in the Map of India

Location of Arunachal Pradesh in the Map of India

ARUNACHAL PRADESH, one of the twenty-nine states of the Republic of India , borders Assam and Nagaland to the south, and shares international borders with Bhutan in the west, Burma in the east and Tibet in the north. Itanagar is the capital of the state.

Formerly called the North-East Frontier Agency, [ NEFA ] , was ceded to Britain by the Tibetan government with the Simla Accord (1914).

NEFA was renamed as Arunachal Pradesh on 20 January 1972 and it became a Union Territory. Arunachal Pradesh became a state on 20 February 1987.

—————————————————————————————————

Location of Mizoram in the Map of India

Location of Mizoram in the Map of India

MIZORAM is one of the 8 states of Northeast India, with Aizawl as its capital. It is the southern most landlocked state sharing borders with three of the Eight sister states, namely Tripura, Assam, Manipur. The state also shares a 722 kilometer border with the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Like several other northeastern states of India, Mizoram was previously part of Assam until 1972, when it was carved out as a Union Territory. It became the 23rd state of India on 20 February 1987.

—————————————————————————————————-

Apart from 2 above mentioned states, I have yet to get students from 3 Union Territories. They are : DADRA & NAGAR HAVELI // DAMAN & DIU // LAKSHADWEEP

At this point of time there are 7 Union Territories in the  Republic of India. They are : ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS // CHANDIGARH // DADRA & NAGAR HAVELI // DAMAN & DIU // LAKSHADWEEP // NCR DELHI // PUDUCHERRY

I have trained actors from 4 of the 7 UTs. Only 3 remain. They are; DADRA & NAGAR HAVELI // DAMAN & DIU // LAKSHADWEEP

ONLY THREE [ 03 ] out of SEVEN [ 07 ] !!

Therefore I titled the blog – “Vidur Acting Institute Spreads Across India …… Almost!!”

Location of Daman & Diu in the Map of India

DAMAN & DIU : For over 450 years, the coastal enclaves of Daman (Portuguese: Damão) and Diu on the Arabian Sea coast were part of Portuguese India, along with Goa and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Goa, Daman and Diu were incorporated into the Republic of India on December 19, 1961, by military conquest. Portugal did not recognise the Indian annexation of these territories until 1974.

The territory of “Goa, Daman and Diu” was administered as a single union territory until 1987. Then Goa was granted statehood, leaving Daman and Diu as a separate union territory.

—————————————————————————————————-

Location of Dadra & Nagar Haveli in the Map of India

DADRA & NAGAR HAVELI is a Union Territory in Western India. Nagar Haveli is wedged between Maharashtra and Gujarat, whereas Dadra is an enclave surrounded by Gujarat. The shared capital is Silvassa.

Dadra and Nagar Haveli map in pink colour depicting the Gujarati enclave village of Maghval in grey colour.

Maghval is a small enclave village belonging to Gujarat that is located within Nagar Haveli, just south of Silvassa in Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The Portuguese occupied Nagar Haveli on 10 June 1783 on the basis of Friendship Treaty executed on 17 December 1779 as compensation towards damage to the Portuguese frigate by Maratha Navy. Then, in 1785 the Portuguese purchased Dadra.

Under the Portuguese rule or the Estado da Índia (Portuguese State of India) Dadra & Nagar Haveli formed a single concelho (municipality), named “Nagar Haveli”, with its head in Darará until 1885 and, after that, with its head in the town of Silvassa.

After India attained Independence in 1947, the residents of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, with the help of volunteers of organisations, subtracted the territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli from Portuguese India in 1954.

In 1961 when Indian forces took over Goa, Daman, and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli was also merged with the Republic of India.

On 31 December 1974 a treaty was signed between India and Portugal on recognition of India’s sovereignty over Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

Location of Lakshadweep in the Map of India

Location of Lakshadweep in the Map of India

LAKSHADWEEP : formerly known as the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Aminidivi Islands is a group of islands in the Laccadive Sea, 200 to 440 kilometres off the south-western coast of India. The archipelago is a Union Territory and is governed by the Union Government of India. The islands form the smallest Union Territory of India: their total surface area is just 32 km2 (12 sq mi). Kavaratti serves as the capital of the Union Territory and the region comes under the jurisdiction of Kerala High Court.

In the 16th century the Portuguese took control of the archipelago but the islanders expelled them in 1545. In the 17th century, the islands came under the rule of Ali Rajahs /Arakkal Bheevi of Kannur, who received them as a gift from the Kolathiris.

The Aminidivi group of islands (Androth, Amini, Kadmat, Kiltan, Chetlath and Bitra) came under the rule of Tipu Sultan in 1787. They passed to British control after the Third Anglo-Mysore War and were attached to South Canara. The rest of the islands came under the suzerainty of the Arakkal family of Cannanore in return for a payment of annual tribute. The British took over the administration of those islands for non-payment of arrears. These islands were attached to the Malabar district of the Madras Presidency during the British Raj.

In 1956, during the reorganization of Indian states, the Lakshadweep islands were organized into a separate union territory for administrative purposes.

It is a proud moment for me. It is very satisfying for any acting institute. I feel blessed that out of 36 states and Union Territories of my country, I have trained students from 31. Only 05 still remain out of my reach.

” Thus Spake Shri Bhishma ” : श्री भीष्‍म उवाच !!

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           MARCH 13, 2016           07.50 P.M.

I read MAHABHARATAM in my childhood days. First time I read it in Hindi when I was in 8th standard. At that time I was more interested in story that the philosophy of GITA or teachings of BHISHMA.

I read it again during the summer vacation after I gave High School examination. This time I was able to understand the philosophical part also. Character of BHISHMA PITAMAH fascinated me. A boy , who took vow of celibacy and never broke it, an old warrior , who fought a fierce battle and led it at the age of 124 years , made a fascinating , interesting story. As a human being , he was the only one , who could decide and actually chose date , month and time of his death. It never happened before him. It never happened after him. In fact it wont happen ever again.

During MAHABHARATA war his age was somewhere between 85 to 150 years. Most common belief is that he was 124 years old , when he fought the epic battle. He chose his day and time of his death and then died on the bed of arrows : SHAR AHAIYA .

What a life !! What a personality !!

Last Sermon of BHISHM PITAMAH about RAJ DHARMA

Last Sermon of BHISHMA PITAMAH about RAJ DHARMA

I specially like his last conversation with YUDHISHTHIR , which he delivered when he was on bed of arrows. It was regarding RAJ DHARMA [ Duties & Ethics of a King ] . I like it very much.

But I read MAHABHARAT , published by Geeta Press, Gorakhpur, in Sanskrit with Hindi translation . Suddenly , last night I found 36 edicts of BHISHMA PITAMAH compiled by BHIMAKARMA in his twitter-handle :

I copied the tweets and posting them here for the perusal of my blog readers.

Bheeshma mentions 36 virtues of an ideal king to Yudhishthira.

JNU : Hub of Anti-National Communist Traitors

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           FEBRUARY 14, 2016           11.40 P.M.

I am agitated. I am angry. I am furious.

Maqbool Bhat was hanged in 1984 , February 11, 1984. Indira Gandhi of Indian National Congress was the Prime Minister of India.

Afzal Guru was hanged in 2013 , February 09, 2013. Manmohan Singh of Indian National Congress was the Prime Minister of India.

Hanging of both these Kashmiri separatists, terrorists and Mir Jafars of modern-day India happened in Congress rule. Why communist of JNUSU  [ Jawahar Lal Nehru University Student Union ] raising it now? Why scion of Congress Rahul Gandhi is supporting this nefarious anti-national activity? Dude, it all happened when your grandmother Indira Gandhi and your factotum Manmohan Singh were ruling the country.

Let us have full details of the incident which happened in JNU campus on that shameful, fateful day.

—————————————————————————————————-

Poster of So-Called Cultural Event of JNU

Poster of So-Called Cultural Event of JNU

‘The Country Without a Post Office’ event

A group of students organized an event on 9th February 2016, to mark the hanging of Afzal Guru, convicted for the 2001 Indian Parliament Attack. The name of the event is derived from the book of poetry titled ’The Country Without a Post Office’ by Agha Shahid Ali about a particularly violent period in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The student organizers of the event had pasted posters across the campus inviting them to a “cultural evening of protest with poets, artists, singers, writers, students, intellectuals & cultural activists along with art exhibition & photo exhibition” on “9th Feb, Tuesday at Sabarmati Dhaba”, “Against the Brahminical ‘Collective Conscience’! Against the judicial killing of Afzal Guru & Maqbool Bhat! In solidarity with the struggle of the Kashmiri people for their democratic right to self determination…”.

The Joint Secretary of JNU Students’ Union Saurabh Kumar Sharma of the ABVP  wrote a letter to the Vice Chancellor M Jagdish Kumar, complaining that “these activities will disturb the peace & harmony of the campus” and requesting him to rusticate the involved students. It prompted the university administration to order cancellation of the march as they “feared” that it might “disrupt” peace on campus.

University authorities’ response

The University authorities disallowed this program, citing misrepresentation of the nature of the event. “We heard there was some cultural programme but later came to know it’s not a programme but a protest. We came to know about it through posters and no permission was sought by anyone. Thus, to keep calm and maintain peace in the campus, we cancelled it,” JNU Vice-Chancellor Prof Jagadesh Kumar said.

But the organisers went ahead with the programme despite the cancellation of the permission.

Controversial slogans raised

Some of the students raised Anti Indian slogans like :

“Kashmir ki azaadi tak jang rahegi”

“Bharat ki barbadi tak jung rahegi”

“India go back”

“Pakistan Zindabad”

It translates to “Will fight this war until the independence of Kashmir, until the destruction of India”. Agitated over the issue, ABVP members gathered outside VC office and shouted slogans demanding expulsion of the students who contributed to the “anti-national” activity. The Anti-India sloganeering evoked strong emotions among general public as the students who were shouting the anti-India slogans are heavily subsidised in their education from tax payers money.

Students’ Union response

In his Facebook post dated 11 February 2016, JNU Students’ Union President Kanhaiya Kumar said “We will fight for democracy, for our constitution and the equal nation for all. In the name of Afzal Guru, ABVP is trying to divert all the issues to save the failure of the Central Govt.”

Arrests of student leaders

Acting on a complaint filed by BJP MP Maheish Girri, on 12 February 2016 the JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested by the Delhi Police. He was charged with sedition under section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, that allows for maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

In an amateur video shot a few hours before his arrest, Kanhaiya Kumar says (translated from Hindi): “We don’t need a patriotism certificate from the RSS”, he says. “We love this country. We fight for the 80% poor population of this country. We trust the constitution of this country. If anyone challenges the constitution, be it the Sanghis, it won’t be tolerated,”

Amnesty International criticized the arrest, calling it unwarranted. In a statement posted on Facebook, Amnesty International further added “The right to freedom of expression extends to speech that offends or disturbs. India’s sedition law is contrary to international standards on freedom of expression and must be repealed.”

A day later, seven more students were detained by the police.

The arrests soon snowballed into a major political controversy, with several leaders of opposition parties visiting the JNU campus in solidarity with the students protesting against the police crackdown. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated that while the students would not be harassed, the “guilty would not be spared”. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiran Rijiju said the JNU would not be allowed to become a hub for “anti-national” activities.

Enquiry Committee

The Statement of the Vice-Chancellor Jawaharlal Nehru University stated “Along with the Deans Committee, the University takes serious note of the incidents on campus on the evening of February 9th. A high-level enquiry committee has been constituted to investigate the matter and take appropriate action as necessary. While the JNU community upholds the right to free debate on campus, the University strongly condemns the use of the University as a platform for activities that violate the Constitution and the laws of the land. However, there could be aberrations where fringe sections misuse the freedom provided. While that problem would be appropriately addressed in this case, the University would also take steps to protect the academic atmosphere and the environment for vibrant discussion that JNU has always provided and stands for.”

“The permission for the programme was sought by giving incomplete information, so it is an act of indiscipline. A committee headed by the Chief Proctor will examine the footage of the event and speak to the witnesses. It is on basis of the report, the varsity will take appropriate action,” JNU Vice-Chancellor Jagdeesh Kumar said. Briefing about the “incomplete information”, the varsity Registrar Bhupinder Zutshi said, “There was nowhere mentioned in the permission request that the event will be on Afzal Guru, they just said that they wanted to organise a cultural event. How can any talk about disintegration of nation be national?”

Interim Report

A press note dated 12 February 2016 stated “Considering the seriousness of the incidents, and in order to enable a fair enquiry, the Committee has debarred eight students from academic activities with immediate effect during the pendency of the enquiry. However, to permit them represent their stand for a fair investigation, they will be allowed to stay in their respective hostels as a guest, during the period of the enquiry.”

I have always written about the anti-national , communist activities of traitors in the campuses. FTII was the first nut case after Narendra Modi government came into power. I wrote many blogs about their designs and non-academic activities. They have been tamed now.

And now comes JNU. “CULTURAL EVENT” is fine. DEBATE is okay. DISSENT is also acceptable. But shouting anti-India slogan is neither “CULTURAL” nor “DISSENT”.

“Kashmir ki azaadi tak jang rahegi”

“Bharat ki barbadi tak jung rahegi”

“India go back”

“Pakistan Zindabad”

It is pure , unadulterated sedition. It is anti-national. It is secession. It should be condemned. But alas ! The traitor Communists are up in arms against Narendra Modi government. Rahul Gandhi has also joined them. Their pathological hatred for Narendra Modi should be curbed, curtailed and nipped immediately.

Rahul Gandhi, Ajay Makan, D. Raja & Sitaram Yetury in JNU Protest

Rahul Gandhi, Ajay Makan, D. Raja, Anand Sharma & Sitaram Yetury in JNU Protest

As I am writing this blog, I read that “Tum kitne Afzal maroge ; Har ghar se Afzal niklega” shouting brave hearts ( ? ) are on the run. They are absconding. Their facebook accounts deleted. Such is the bravery of these Communist pigs !

JNU in support of Afzal Guru

JNU in support of Afzal Guru

I denounced Communist traitors of  JNU , their supporters like D. Raja and Sitaram Yechuri and Rahul Gandhi [ An anti-national on probation ] . D. Raja , who is taking moral high ground , is particularly responsible because his daughter Aparajitha Raja participated in that infamous “Cultural Event” of JNU.

In the end I am quoting a Hindi poem sent to me by Shri Awnish Barnawal, a nationalist Hindu Swayamsevak from my home town Deoria, UP.

Vidur’s Film Diary – January 2016

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           February 07 , 2016           08.20 P.M.

[ MILESTONE : Vidur’s Film Diary completed 6th year of its existence in May 2015. June 2015 marked the beginning of its journey in the 7th year. ]

As an ACTING TRAINER my success rate was 40% in the year 2013 – 2014 . It jumped to 55% in 2014 – 2015. And in 2015 it is now 62.35 % . This is unprecedented for any ACTING INSTITUTE or ACTING TRAINER. I am continuously writing Vidur’s Film Diary since 6 years. And to my utter surprise I have noticed that there were no lean months ever. It never happened that a month came and there were none of my students in any of the 5 fields of entertainment, which my diary covers. In fact there were more than a dozen working students every month.

Sainthood in Death? – A Kashmiri Pandit remembers Mufti Mohammad Sayeed

img_8024

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JANUARY 10, 2016           07.45 P.M.

Two time Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir and first Muslim Home Minister of India, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed died on January 07, 2016 in New Delhi of multiple organ failure. He was 79 years old at the time of his death. He was buried in his native village Bijbehara of Anantnaag district.

With due respect to the departed soul, his political journey could be termed as colourful and sheer opportunistic. From Congress to Jan Morcha, and then again to the Congress, it was without any stated principles. Finally he, along with his daughter Mehbooba Mufti, formed PDP and remained there till his death.

His two terms as Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir could also be termed as maverick and opportunistic.

2002 = Though he had resigned from the Indian National Congress but without any qualm took their support to become Chief Minister. He had only 16 MLAs in the house of 87.

2008 = His PDP won 21 seats. But this time he prefered to sit in the opposition. It again defies logic. With 16 MLAs, he chose to become Chief Minister. But with 21 MLAs, he prefered to sit in the opposition.

2014 = He formed an alliance with Bharatiya Janata Party and became Chief Minister for the second time.  This time he had 28 MLAs, up 7 from the 21 last election.

From Congress to BJP, many people can frown but for him it was a smooth journey.

Here is the list of the milestones of his political journey.

Indian National Congress = 1972 to 1987

Jan Morcha = 1987 to 1990

Indian National Congress = 1990 to 1999

People’s Democratic Party = 1999 to 2016

Leader Congress Legislative Party = 1975

Union Minister of Tourism = 1986

Home Minister of India = Dec. 1989 – Nov. 1990

Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir = Nov. 2002 – Nov. 2005

Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir = March 2015 – Jan. 2016

It is in our culture to give respect to the departed soul. One is not supposed to be disparaging about the person after the he is gone. But in my opinion history is supposed to be unbiased. History should be loyal to the truth only. History is and should be cruel.

Therefore I thought to reproduce an article written by Anupama Handoo , a Kashmiri Pandit, which presents a totally different picture of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. —————————————————————————————————-

On 7 January 2016, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed took his last breath. News feeds since then are full of eulogies for the supposed saint, nationalist and statesman.

Every paean takes me back to that fateful month of December in 1989 when Mufti’s youngest daughter Rubaiya Sayeed was kidnapped by (Yasin Malik’s) Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front. The nation was held to ransom for the daughter of the Union Home Minister who had taken oath just a few days ago. Bypassing the elected state government led by Farooq Abdullah, Mufti misused his power and influence to engineer the release of five dreaded terrorists. Local population in the valley and friends were confident that Rubaiya was at home or at least in a safe house where she was safe and well taken care of, all the time. This drama of hostage rescue is the watershed event in Kashmir terrorism. Encouraged by weakness of the state and central administration, terrorism took hold in the valley. General population started to believe that ‘Azadi from India’ and ‘Pakistan with Pandit women and without the men’ is just around the corner. December 1989 and January 1990 was when lakhs of Kashmiri Hindus had to leave their homes to become refugees in their own country. For me and lakhs of Kashmiri Hindus that was the last time we saw home and for that we have Mufti to thank for.

1989 was not the first time when the ugly head of communal militancy reared its head in Kashmir Valley. Political experts maintain that Mufti orchestrated the infamous 1986 Anantnaag riots in which hysterical Muslim mobs took out violent processions, desecrated and destroyed more than 40 temples, and killed and looted the helpless Hindu population. In Mufti’s constituency Brijbehara alone, two temples were looted, ancient idols stolen and broken. Kashmiri Hindus should have anticipated what was to come.

One word that comes closest to describing Kashmiri politicians in general and Mufti Mohammed Sayeed in particular, is chameleon. No, it’s not a kind word. I don’t intend to be kind – the pain is still raw. I call him a chameleon because he switched loyalties like clothes, seizing opportunities to promote himself and his daughter Mehbooba Mufti. With subsequent stints in Democratic National Conference, Congress, and Jan Morcha and later on by launching his own People’s Democratic Party he bargained for more power and more influence with each stepping stone.

He first became Chief Minister in 2002, backed by Congress on a meagre strength of 16 in an 87 member strong State Assembly. In 2008 elections, he chose to stay in the opposition even with 21 seats and in 2015 he chose to form alliance with BJP on a strength of 28. Ambition is not a bad thing, manipulating masses for one’s own end is objectionable. While in opposition he engineered coups; in 1977, twice in 1986, in 1990 and in 2008; ushering the Governors’ rule every time. This marginalised the democratically elected parties and sowed seeds of discord in the electorate. He founded the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 1999 for which he used the electoral symbol of ‘green flag and pen-inkpot’ of the Muslim United Front (MUF) the Jamaat-e-Islami-led conglomerate of anti-India parties.

He kept everyone happy … happily in the dark. To the central government he played the role of a ‘Nationalist’ who was trying to bring ‘healing touch’ to the battered communities through peace and dignity. But the modus operandi of this healing touch was far from nationalist. He was a firm believer in Kashmiris’ right to ‘self-rule’. Ceasefire on the Pakistan border, disbanding of instruments like Special Task Force and Special Operation Group of Police, scrapping of The Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2002 (POTA) and release of political prisoners was all part of his arsenal. He facilitated bringing the separatists leaders (read Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front) to a tripartite political dialogue with India and Pakistan. He recommended free trade and travel between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad in Pakistan Occupied J&K. His latest preposterous proposal was that the people of Kashmir should be allowed to transact their business in the Indian as well as the Pakistani currency. Looking at these steps in totality – these were ploys to weaken the State influence in Law and Order issues and dilute the army control on borders. Making borders with Pakistan porous, Mufti’s strategy was to pave the way for uninterrupted smuggling of currency, arms and drugs as well as infiltration of terrorists.

Kind obituaries are flooding in about the greatness of the man now dead. People are calling him a statesman and a visionary. He surrounded himself with wise people and those wise people (often Kashmiri Pandits) must undoubtedly believe in his secular and nationalist credentials. As a common person who never broke bread with him, I am entitled to judge his greatness by his impact and legacy. I will remember the man as someone who stepped on corpses for his political ambition. For this I cannot wish him peace in afterlife.

Cse Khoda rut karun, Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, magar kari na zaahn.

[ May the almighty look after you Mufti Mohammad Sayeed but I seriously doubt He will. ]

Year End Musings : Vidur Acting Institute in 2015

2

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JANUARY 03, 2016           11.00 P.M.

I wrote Year End Musing in 2010 , 2011 & 2012. In those days I used to write about the Hindi films and Hindi film industry in general. Then I thought that there are many websites and many film analysts and trade pundits doing the same job. So what is the need of me writing the same stuff. Therefore I didn’t write Year End Musings in 2013 & 2014.

But this year it occurred to me that I should chronicle yearly success stories and accomplishments of Vidur Acting Institute. In this field, where veterans like Shri Roshan Taneja and Sushri Ashha Chandra are almost retired, there are only few genuine ones left doing their jobs ethically.

This arena is now dominated by few upstarts, who can go to any length to get their prey. They can make false claims, they can Photoshop some pictures and present it as the proof of their recent successes and accomplishments. They have various fee structures of the same course to lure and hoodwink gullible out-of-town students and finally they give free demo class, collect students, click pictures and post it as the new batch of their tottering institute. But it is their moral and ethical values. If they are not bothered, why should I?

I don’t have to compete with them. 4 generations of NEW AGE Hindi film actors are my students. They are :

HRITIK ROSHAN – KAREENA KAPOOR

RANBIR KAPOOR – KATRINA KAIF

VARUN DHAWAH – ALIA BHATT

PULKIT SAMRAT – URVASHI RAUTELA

Apart from them, I have trained modern-day Telugu super stars like ; ANUSHKA SHETTY , ALLU ARJUN , NAG CHAITANYA  & RAM CHARAN. Current Bengali super star DEV is also my student. Why should I lower my standard to the level of some foul-mouth skunks, if I have such an enviable list. I have decided to paint a true picture of my yearly accomplishments with facts and figures. So this year onwards I will keep on posting Year End Musings.
