Ajit Varman

Also known as Ajit Singh Varman or Ajit Verman, was a talented Hindi film music director, who died on December 15, 2016 at the age of 69.

He worked with Govind Nihlani in films like; “Aakrosh” [ 1980 ] , “Vijeta” [ 1982 ] & “Ardh Satya” [ 1983 ] and with Mahesh Bhatt in films like; “Saaransh” [ 1984 ] & “Janam” [ 1985 ].

On December 31, 2016 , when the world was celebrating the arrival of 2017, this young film maker and builder was gunned down by terrorists in the Reina nightclub in Istanbul, Turkey, where he went to usher in new year.

Abis Rizvi was the CEO of Rizvi Builders. He also produced a Hindi film called; ” Roar : Tigers of the Sunderbans ” [ 2014 ].

Omprakash Sonik :

Omprakash Sonik , better known as Omi, of the well-known duo Sonik-Omi passed away on July 07, 2016 in a private hospital following cardiac arrest.

A widower, he was 77 and is survived by his son Som and daughter Sudha.

Omi was the nephew of the blind music director Master Sonik and together they formed the noted Sonik-Omi team which provided music to nearly 125 Bollywood movies in the 1950-1980s.

Born and raised in Sialkot (now in Pakistan), they moved to India after Partition in 1947 and lived mostly in Delhi.

In 1950, the visually challenged but great singer Master Sonik arrived in Mumbai with his young nephew in tow, hoping to make a career in the film industry which was on the threshold of what was later known as ‘golden era’ of its music.

With many stalwarts already holding sway over the listening audiences, the Sonik-Omi duo faced an uphill struggle, fighting near-starvation at times, Omi even joined in a female chorus group to afford a square meal and the uncle-nephew lived in a tiny slum room on the outskirts of Thane.

In the early 1950s, Master Sonik got a break to direct music for films like Mamta, Mehfil and Ishwar Bhakti, but their music failed to catch the ears of the listeners.

They were reduced to near-paupery and doing odd jobs merely to survive, till a few years later when the late Madan Mohan offered Master Sonik the crucial job of music arranger and the late S. D. Burman also followed suit.

The young Omi also got an opportunity to assist the legendary composer Roshan for films like Taj Mahal, Aarti, Barsaat Ki Raat and many others.

The big break came in 1965 from film-maker G. L. Rawal of Rawal Films, for his new venture, Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya and the musical track composed by the Sonik-Omi team became a rage. AAJA RE PYAR PUKARE ……… by Lata Mangeshkar / DIL NE PHIR YAAD KIYA …… by Mohammed Rafi , Mukesh & Suman Kalyanpur / KALIYON NE GHOONGHAT KHOLE …….by Mohammed Rafi / YE DIL HAI MOHABBAT KA PYASA ……. by Mukesh / LO CHEHRA SURKH SHARAB HUA …….. by Mohammed Rafi are still loved by music connoisseurs.

A couple of years later, Rawal offered them for Aabroo whose music also proved immensely popular and Sonik-Omi became a noted name in Bollywood.

Later, they composed music for films like “Mahua” (with the haunting Dono ne kiya tha pyar magar), “Dharma” (the famous qawwali Raaz ki baat keh doon to, jaane mehfil me phir kya ho), “Raftaar” (Sansar Hai ik Nadiya, Dukh Sukh Do Kinare Hain), Truck Driver, Mehfil, Beti, Dharti Ki God Mein, Umar Qaid, Chowki No. 11 (which had the memorable hit number sung by Shobha Gurtu, Kahin ho na mohalle me halla) and Ladki Pasand Hai.

Over the years, the uncle-nephew pair made a formidable reputation for themselves with compositions in over 125 movies.

While Master Sonik passed away in 1993, Omi continued to compose music and his last musical track was for the film Biwi No. 2 in 2000, after which he eased into retirement.

In the past few years, Omi largely remained away from Bollywood but composed certain non-film and private albums, religious music and other genres of music.

Mubarak Begum :

Mubarak Begum, an acclaimed play back singer started her career with light music recitals performed for All India Radio. Her career as a playback singer began in 1949 with the Indian, Hindi-language film Aaiye. It was the Indo-Pakistani composer Nashad who gave Mubarak Begum her first break. The first song she recorded for films was “Mohe Aane Lagi Angrayi, Aja Aja Balam” (Aaiye, 1949). She also sang a duet with the then upcoming Lata Mangeshkar in the same film. A major hit in her career was the song “Kabhi Tanhaiyon Mein Yun” for composer Snehal Bhatkar in Kidar Sharma‘s film Hamari Yaad Aayegi which is, till this day, regarded as a classic rendition.

Mubarak Begum died on 18 July 2016 at her residence in Jogeshwari after a prolonged illness.

Mubarak Begum has sung a total of 178 songs for Hindi films during her career, and the total number of films where her songs have appeared is 115.

As an ACTING TRAINER my success rate was 40% in the year 2013 – 2014 . It jumped to 55% in 2014 – 2015. And in 2015 , it zoomed up to 62.35 % . Nida Fazli :

Muqtida Hasan Nida Fazli, more famously known as Nida Fazli (12 October 1938 – 8 February 2016), was a Hindi and Urdu poet, lyricist and dialogue writer. Born in Delhi, into a Kashmiri family, Nida Fazli grew up in Gwalior. During the partition of India, his parents migrated to Pakistan, but he decided to stay in India.

He moved to Mumbai in search of job in 1964. In the early days of his career, he wrote in magazines like Dharmayug and Blitz .

He became known among readers and ghazal singers for his use of colloquial language for ghazals, dohaas and nazms. He wrote the famous couplet: ‘Duniya jise kehte hain jaadu kaa Khilona hai ; Mil jaaye to mitti hai kho jaaye to sona hai’.

His career improved when Kamal Amrohi approached him for the film Razia Sultan (1983) . Nida saheb wrote two songs and attracted other Hindi filmmakers. Some of his other famous film songs include Aa bhi jaa (Sur), Tu is tarah se meri zindagi mein (Aap To Aise Na The) and Hosh waalon ko khabar Kya (Sarfarosh). His celebrated lyrics were also used in Aap to aise na the, Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin (1996) and Gudiya.

He wrote the title song of TV serials like Sailaab, Neem ka Ped, Jaane Kya Baat Hui and Jyoti.

He teamed up with Jagjit Singh in 1994 to bring an album named Insight, which got appreciation for its soulful poetry and music.

Shortly before his death he wrote columns for BBC Hindi website on various contemporary issues and literature.

He died in Mumbai on 8 February 2016 at the age of 78.

Life As An Acting Trainer : 26 Years – 92% Success Rate

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA SEPTEMBER 02, 2015 07.00 P.M.

Mumbai is flooded with acting institutes. Everyday a new acting institute mushrooms and starts claiming that it is the best one. There are few old ones also. Though, they have passed their prime but still claim to be in the race. Then there are few upstart trainers, who have delusion of grandeur and success. It is but natural that aspiring actors get confused and are hoodwinked by these con trainers. These “Bunty & Bablis” try every trick from the book and sometimes succeed also in trapping these aspirants.

Therefore it becomes imperative to chronicle true success stories to save gullible students from the clutches of unscrupulous and con acting trainers. I am writing this blog so that such ARVIND KEJARIWALS of acting training should get exposed and shouldn’t go unchallenged.

When ” Bajrangi Bhaijaan “ got released and took the box office by storm, there were several articles in the news papers. It collected 100 crores by the first weekend and thus became the 1st ever Hindi film to enter THE BIG CLUB so quickly.

Bombay Times, dated July 21, 2015, published an article about THE BIG CLUB. It chronicled all the 35 Hindi movies till date, which are the biggest earners.

Out of 35 films, there is 1 film in 300 Crore Club / 1 film in 250 Crore Club / 3 films in 200 Crore Club / 7 films in 150 Crore Club and 23 films in 100 Crore Club .

I am so happy to announce and stating this fact with great pride that out of these 35 block-buster films, there are only 3 films which have no students of mine [ JUST 3 FILMS ]. These films are ” Ghajini ” , ” Holiday ” and ” Ek Villain “ . Apart from these 3 films my students are there in all the remaining 32 films. This is unparalleled feat. This is unprecedented success story. This is so humbling as an acting trainer. I don’t think any other acting trainer can claim such humongous success story. Even FTII, Pune [ Film & television Institute of India ] can claim such success in recent times. FTII gave many luminaries to the film industry but that was eons ago. It was during Shri Roshan Taneja’s time. This so-called premier (?) acting institute’s recent accomplishments are negligible compared to mine.

Vidur’s Film Diary – October 2014

[ DECLARATION : In my diary, since May 2014, I have started mentioning names of only those students, who respect me as their teacher and accept my contribution in their journey of life. All the other students, who, though, worked this month but are not mentioned, are free from any obligation from my side. GOD BLESS THEM ! ]

May 2014 and June 2014 were the only insignificant months for my career. Number of students trained by me plummeted drastically in these two months. But it jumped upwards from July 2014. It was 27 in July, 2014 and 20 in August, 2014. From September 2014 number of students hovers between 20 and 30 or more.

Vidur’s Film Diary – February 2014

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA MARCH 01, 2014 11.40 P.M.

As I have stated in the January edition of Vidur’s Film Diary , 2014 is the 25th year of my acting training career. This Silver Jubilee Year is bringing lots of accolades and jubilation to Vidur Acting Institute . It is unfolding several unseen vistas in my professional career as well as personal life.

It all started with Sunny Deol starrer ” Singh Saab The Great ” . Urvashi Rautela , a student of Vidur Acting Institute , made her debut in the film. Then came Salman Khan starrer ” Jai Ho “ . It becomes the first ever film to have 8 students of mine working in one film . Daisy Shah made her debut in this film. After these two films , it was turn of an Abhay Deol film called ” One By Two ” . Preeti Desai [ Miss Great Britain 2006 ] played lead in the film . Then came ” Highway “ . Naina Trivedi , [ a FTII alumni of 2009 batch ] and another student of Vidur Acting Institute , played an important role in it. It is needless to say that Alia Bhatt is the main lead of “ Highway “ and she is also my students . Thus my two students were there in critically acclaimed and box office hit film ” Highway ” .

Balu Mahendra :

Balu Mahendra, the man who gave us ” Sadma ” [ 1983 ] , a Kamal Haasan & Sridevi starrer film, died on February 13, 2014 in Chennai at the age of 74.

In a career spanning 42 years he made 22 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. He made his highly successful film ” Moondram Pirai ” [ 1982 ] in Hindi as ” Sadma ” [ 1983 ] . He made another Hindi film ” Aur Ek Prem Kahani ” [ 1996 ] . It was a remake of his first film, a Kannada movie ” Kokila ” [ 1977 ] .

Basically a cinematographer, he , apart from directing films in 5 languages, was script writer and editor also.

It is not a mean accomplishment considering the fact that by each passing day acting institutes are mushrooming in every nook and corner of Mumbai. There are some genuine institutes and there are few fake institutes. While I am openly documenting my achievements , there is deafening silence on the other front . Fakers of faking facts , gaali gurus of facebook acting institute , veteran (?) trainers of blink & miss starlets , crafty craftsmen of craft-less actors are conspicuous by their silence . I have always maintained that one day dust will settle down and everything will become crystal clear. Dust now is settling down rapidly and spineless warriors are standing naked . Their true worth is out in the battlefield . And yes , world is watching .

Vidur’s Film Diary – December 2013

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA JANUARY 10, 2014 04.25 P.M.

Month of December 2013 will be remembered for ” Dhoom 3 “ , the highest grosser film of Hindi film industry. It earned 250 crores within 14 days and dashed all previous box office records . It is still going strong as I write and publish this blog. It’s total domestic collection till date is INR 272.50 crores. ” Dhoom 3 “ has become all-time blockbuster.

” Krrish 3 “ , a Hritik Roshan film , stands second with the All – India net collection of INR 243.24 crore in India and INR 300.00 crore worldwide . ” Chennai Express “ stands third with the collection of INR 226.70 crore.

It is so uncanny that all the Hindi films of 200 crore club have my students working in various fields. Here is the list :

A Hindi and Marathi film and stage actor, Vinay Apte died on December 07, 2013 in Mumbai at the age of 62.

Apart from several Marathi films, he worked in Hindi films like; ” Chandni Bar ” [ 2001 ], ” Ek Chalis Ki Last Local ” [ 2007 ], ” Raajneeti ” [ 2010 ] and ” Satyagraha ” [ 2013 ].

A Hindi Film financier and diamond merchant Dinesh Vasant Gandhi, 65, and his wife, Devyani, 65, were among those killed in the fire in the Mont Blac building at Kemps Corner on Friday.

Dinesh Gandhi financed over 15 films, including ” Tezaab “, ” Hum Se Badkar Kaun ” and ” Bezubaan “, long before studios started putting in the money. While both ” Bezubaan ” and ” Hum Se Badkar Kaun ” were made by producer Pranlal Mehta, it was during the shooting of ” Bezubaan ” that Gandhi met producer-director N Chandra and agreed to finance his film ” Tezaab “.

A gentleman actor Farooque Sheikh died on December 27, 2013 in Dubai at the age of 65. He will always be remembered for his sensitive portrayals in classic and cult films like ; ” Gaman “, ” Noorie “, ” Umrao Jaan ” and ” Chashme Buddoor “.

Month of November 2013 will always be special for me . In the 24th year of my acting training career , I gave one more star to the Indian film industry in November 2013 . Urvashi Rautela is my latest student to hit the box office with her debut film ” Singh Saab The Great “ and join the film world .

November will also be known for ” Krrish 3 “ , a Hritik Roshan film , a Diwali release , which brought cheers to the Hindi film industry . It is the new member of 100 Crore club of Hindi films . ” Satya 2 “ disappointed . ” Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela “ earned handsomely at the box office . It is the latest entrant in the 100 crore club of Hindi films .

” Singh Saab The Great ” was a moderate hit and ” Gori Tere Pyaar Mein “ was not so successful .

Popular folk singer of Pakistan , Reshma died in Lahore on November 03 , 2013 . She was only 66 at the time of her death . She was suffering from throat cancer .

Born in Bikaner , Rajasthan , she along with her tribe migrated to Pakistan after partition and settled in Karachi .

She sang many famous numbers for Hindi films also .

Subhash Ghai used her voice in the film ” Hero ” [ 1983 ] , which featured one of her most famous songs , “Lambi Judai ……………………… “.

Thus total number of students working in the month of November 2013 comes to 31 .
