Year End Musings : Vidur Acting Institute in 2016

End of a year is the time to make plan for the coming year. But it is also the time to take into account the year gone by. People often forget this and they remain unaware of their downward slide if there are any. And thus they fail to make amends.

This is precisely the reason, I started chronicling my accomplishments and write about the year gone by. Here I am chronicling some shinning achievements of the past and also what happened to me on the career front in 2016.

Thus in total 91 students worked in TV, AD, THEATRE & REGIONAL FILMS. If you add 125 students of films , this number comes to a whopping  216. 01 more than 2015 .

Till date 50 Hindi films have earned 100 crore or more at the box office. Out of these 50 films, my 47 students are there in 44 films. Only ” Ghajini “, ” Holiday ” , ” Ek Villain ” , ” M. S. Dhoni : The Untold Story ” , ” Shivaay ” & ” Dangal “ are the films, which have no students of mine. In this field my success rate is unbelievably whopping 94 % .

Vidur Acting Institute & 10 National Film Awards

With this post, I want to tell the world that VIDUR Acting Institute  has a wonderful presence in the arena of NATIONAL FILM AWARDS.

This year in 2016 my student Kalki Koechlin won Jury Best Actor Award for her film ” MARGARITA WITH A STRAW “. When I read the news and started counting , I was surprised to note that till date my 10 students have won NATIONAL FILM AWARDS in different categories.

As I have decide to be truthful in all my reporting, I would like to confess that out of 10 NATIONAL FILM AWARD winning personalities, I have to share credit of 05 with Mr. Kishore Namit Kapoor as I trained them there as their personal acting coach. They are : Saif Ali Khan , Priyanka Chopra , Arjun Rampal , Arbaaz Khan & John Abraham . 

But the remaining 05 are my own students. They are : Prakash Jha [ 03 Time Winner ] Jugal Hansraj & Kalki Koechlin .

Kalki is a wonderful actor and her portrayals are always very poignant and sensitive. After her debut film ” Dev D ” , she was memorable in ” Margarita With A Straw “.

Life As An Acting Trainer : 26 Years – 92% Success Rate

Mumbai is flooded with acting institutes. Everyday a new acting institute mushrooms and starts claiming that it is the best one. There are few old ones also. Though, they have passed their prime but still claim to be in the race. Then there are few upstart trainers, who have delusion of grandeur and success. It is but natural that aspiring actors get confused and are hoodwinked by these con trainers. These “Bunty & Bablis” try every trick from the book and sometimes succeed also in trapping these aspirants.

Therefore it becomes imperative to chronicle true success stories to save gullible students from the clutches of unscrupulous and con acting trainers. I am writing this blog so that such ARVIND KEJARIWALS of acting training should get exposed and shouldn’t go unchallenged.

When ” Bajrangi Bhaijaan “ got released and took the box office by storm, there were several articles in the news papers. It collected 100 crores by the first weekend and thus became the 1st ever Hindi film to enter THE BIG CLUB so quickly.

Bombay Times, dated July 21, 2015, published an article about THE BIG CLUB. It chronicled all the 35 Hindi movies till date, which are the biggest earners.

Out of 35 films, there is 1 film in 300 Crore Club / 1 film in 250 Crore Club / 3 films in 200 Crore Club / 7 films in 150 Crore Club and 23 films in 100 Crore Club .

I am so happy to announce and stating this fact with great pride that out of these 35 block-buster films, there are only 3 films which have no students of mine [ JUST 3 FILMS ]. These films are ” Ghajini ” , ” Holiday ” and ” Ek Villain “ . Apart from these 3 films my students are there in all the remaining 32 films. This is unparalleled feat. This is unprecedented success story. This is so humbling as an acting trainer. I don’t think any other acting trainer can claim such humongous success story. Even FTII, Pune [ Film & television Institute of India ] can claim such success in recent times. FTII gave many luminaries to the film industry but that was eons ago. It was during Shri Roshan Taneja’s time. This so-called premier (?) acting institute’s recent accomplishments are negligible compared to mine.

I am giving the whole list of films published in the July 21, 2015 issue of Bombay Times. Name of my students working in these films are also mentioned. It is now for the discerning public to judge the facts.

Day before yesterday on 11 August I was sitting in my study in the night and was going through the bunch of newspapers . Suddenly I noticed a front page news in Bombay Times of Sunday Times of India . It was about 150 Crore Film Club . It was an intriguing article . And it definitely was a new revelation .

Till date there are only 4 Hindi films in this club . They are :

Thus out of 22 films in 100 Crore Club , my students are there in 14 films . It is unprecedented . And it comes to a whopping 64 % success ratio . Out of 12 actors , who are there in this club , 7 are my students . It brings my success ratio to 59 % in this category too .

But seems to be passe now . 100 Crore Club is now common . The latest benchmark is 150 Crore Film Club . And till date it has only 4 members . And hold your breath , my students are there in all the 4 films . God ! it comes to 100 % success ratio .

I am bringing out above facts with all the humility at my command . It’s not like blowing one’s own trumpet . In this field of film acting training , some acting trainers have become experts in false claims . Thus it becomes necessary to post facts for the gullible public . In this field where some acting trainers have metamorphosed into pathological liars , it has become imperative to make general public aware of the facts . So I am presenting the facts .

I know that fringe-players will cringe again and immediately start their vitriolic campaign . Upstarts will start hurling abuses . Uncouth will unfurl their flag of arrogance . Stone -pelters will be active again . And I will be subjected to choicest cuss words by uncultured and self-appointed descendents of Stanislavski . But It hardly matters .

2012 gave us only 10 super hits and some major flops . ” Ek Tha Tiger ” , ” Dabangg 2 ” , ” Rowdy Rathore ” , ” Agneepath ” , Jab Tak Hai Jaan ” , ” Barfi ” , ” Housefull 2 ” , ” Son Of Sardar ” , ” Bol Bachchan ” and ” Talash “ were declared hits . ” Talash “ could not make it to the 100 crore club . It earned only 93 crores . But all the other 9 movies earned more than 100 crores . ” Ek Tha Tiger “ became the most successful film of 2012 . It raked in 198 crores .

Box Office Blues – December 2012

MUMBAI – MAHARASHTRA – INDIA           JANUARY 03 , 2013           11.55 P.M.

This is the 3rd blog in this category .

Only 7 Hindi films got released in December , 2012 . Winter chill in the north , public outcry and support for the unfortunate rape victim of Delhi and finally new year celebrations took its toll on box office and December 2012 had frosty effect on the box office collections .

” Khiladi 786 ” and ” Dabangg 2 “ were only exceptions . These two films garnered nice collections and in the final reckoning ” Dabangg 2 “ became the winner .

I am particularly pleased with the success of ” Dabangg 2 “ because it is produced and directed by my student Arbaaz Khan . Its costume designer Alvira Khan Agnihotri is also my student .

First Week – December 07

1 – Khiladi 786 : This new film from the famous ” Khiladi “ franchise of Akshay Kumar earned 62 crores world – wide . It was made with the budget of 30 crores , so it almost earned double its investment . Thus it became the first hit of December 2012 .

This film was directed by Ashish R. Mohan . It is the 8th installment in the franchise after ” Khiladi ” [ 1992 ] . Other Khiladi films are ; ” Main Khiladi Tu Anadi ” [ 1994 ] , ” Sabse Bada Khiladi ” [ 1995 ] , ” Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi ” [ 1996 ] , ” Mr. & Mrs . Khiladi ” [ 1997 ] , ” International Khiladi ” [ 1999 ] and ” Khiladi 420 ” [ 2000 ] .

2 – 10 ML Love : This forgettable film directed by Sharat Kataria , has Tara Sharma as one of the female protagonists . She is daughter of Late Pradeep Sharma and a dear and old student of mine .

This film is a liberal adaptation of Shakespeare’s play ” A Midsummer Night’s Dream ” .

Second Week – December 14

1 – Cigarette Ki Tarah : This romantic thriller has Prashant Narayanan as one of the protagonists . This film was directed by Akashaditya Lama .

2 – Myoho : A dud of December . Myoho means Mystic Law . It was directed by Ranjan Shandilya .

3 – Four Two Ka One : A disappointing film of Jimmy Sheirgill . He is my student . I trained him for Aditya Chopra directed ” Mohabbatein ” [ 2000 ] of Yash Raj Films .

Third Week – December 21

1 – Dabangg 2 : It is the biggest hit of December 2012 . It is the sequel of  its earlier avatar ” Dabangg ” . Arbaaz Khan made his debut as a director with this film . This is the 5th consecutive 100 crore earner of Salman Khan . Film’s budget was 40 crore . Thus according to trade analysts it is a block – buster .

Nikitin Dhir played the antagonist and Alvira Khan Agnihotri is the costume designer of this film . Arbaaz , Alvira and Nikitan are my students . I am so happy for them .

This film also has Kareena Kapoor and Flora Saini in guest appearances . They both are my students . Thus ” Dabangg 2 “ has 5 students of mine . One super – hit and 5 students . It is heartening .

Fourth Week  – December 28

1 – Hansa : A small film from the stable of Manav Kaul , a known theatre personality .

The 100 Crore Club of Hindi Films

All the Acting Trainers of Mumbai want successful students . Its natural . Some Acting Trainers of India even make false claims about their student actors to show the world that they are very successful . Its deceit . Almost all Bollywood Acting Trainers have lists of their students , who are now very much successful in Hindi film industry . Some are genuine , some are fake .

In fact all the Film Institutes of Mumbai dish out list of their students , whose films are there in the 100 Crore Club . In olden days Silver Jubilee , Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee used to be the hallmark of a successful films . But now 100 Crore earning films are considered successful .

Month of August had no surprises . Everything happened on the expected lines . ” Ek Tha Tiger “ came as a hurricane in 3300 cinema halls and multiplexes and devastated box office collections and wrote a new history .

It is the fastest film to earn 100 crore . It is the first film of  Yash Raj Banner to earn 100 crore . It is the 4th consecutive film of Salman Khan to earn 100 crore . And it is the 2nd biggest all time grosser Hindi film after 3 Idiots .

An iconic figure in the field of cinematography , Ashok Mehta died on August 15 , 2012 in Mumbai at the age of 65 . He was suffering from lung cancer .

 ” 36 Chowringhee Lane ” [ 1981 ] , ” Mandi ” [1983 ] , ” Utsav ” [ 1984 ] ,” Trikaal ” [ 1985 ] , ” Ijaazat ” [ 1987 ] , ” Ram Lakhan ” [ 1989 ] , ” Saudagar ” [ 1991 ] , ” Khalnaayak [ 1993 ] , ” Bandit Queen ” [ 1994 ] , ” Gaja Gamini ” [ 2000 ]  , ” Pukar ” [ 2000 ] , ” Aankhen ” [ 2002 ] , ” Chalte Chalte ” [2003 ] and ” No Entry ” [ 2005 ] are some of his most famous and note – worthy films .

He wrote , produced and directed ” Moksha ” [2001 ] , debut film of Arjun Rampal and Kalpana Pandit . Incidentally both are my students .

First half of 2012 is over . There are few sterling successes and some significant emerging new trends in the Hindi film industry . Big budget films like ;  ” Agneepath ” , ” Houseful 2 “ and  ” Rowdy Rathore “  earned mega bucks and entered in the prestigious 100 crore club . Small budget films like ;  ” Ishaqzaade ” , ” Kahaani ” , ” Vicky Donor ” , ” Paan Singh Tomar ” and ” Gangs of Wasseypur “ won praise and made money also . ” Ishaqzaade ”  marks entry of a fresh face Arjun Kapoor , who is making waves . ” Gangs Of Wasseypur “ heralds emergence of new Hindi cinema .
